The Same Gov’t That Spies on Its Citizens Is Lecturing Facebook CEO for Same Thing

Members of the same government that is responsible for violating privacy laws and illegally collecting data from its citizens, openly lectured the CEO of a company for violating privacy laws and illegally collecting data from its users—a case of irony that could only play out in a country that brags about the unprecedented freedom enjoyed by its citizens.

The special congressional hearing on Facebook’s use of user data lasted for five hours on Tuesday, and the word “privacy” was mentioned nearly 100 times. While there were a number of questions as to whether Senators Diane Feinstein and Chuck Grassley—who are both 84 years old—fully grasped the concept of Facebook and its business model, the concerns about how the social media giant is treating its users was overwhelming.

“Consumers ought to have clearer information, not opaque policies and complex click-through consent pages. The tech industry has an obligation to respond to widespread and growing concerns over data privacy and security and to restore the public’s trust,” Grassley said. “The status quo no longer works. Moreover, Congress must determine if and how we need to strengthen privacy standards to ensure transparency and understanding for the billions of consumers who utilize these products.”

Sen. Bill Nelson, 75, insisted that if Facebook does not ensure privacy for its users, then Americans’ personal privacy will be jeopardized, requiring the government to interfere.

“If you and other social media companies do not get your act in order, none of us are going to have any privacy anymore. That’s what we’re facing,” Nelson said. “We’re talking about personally identifiable information that, if not kept by the social media–media companies from theft, a value that we have in America, being our personal privacy—we won’t have it anymore.”

However, there was one significant fallacy that is either not understood or is simply being ignored by the members of Congress who addressed Zuckerberg. When individuals create Facebook accounts they know that the photos they share are not their own anymore; they know that every time they react to a status or share their thoughts on a product or service, it will be used to create targeted advertisements that will appear in their newsfeeds.

Americans have the ability to decide whether they give Facebook access to their data, or whether they have a Facebook account at all. But they do not have the ability to decide whether their data is stolen and used by the U.S. government.

While Facebook makes it clear that it is using your reactions to content to create targeted ads for your newsfeed and that it is using the photos you post of yourself to create a facial recognition profile that automatically tags your face in other photos, the government has attempted to be discreet about its data collection.

The National Security Agency initially claimed that it was only collecting data from foreign targets that it believed were suspected “terrorists.” That excuse lasted up until former NSA contractor Edward Snowden released a trove of classified documents in 2013 that showed the government was collecting data from and spying on innocent Americans.

Even after a court ruled that the NSA’s data collection and domestic spying practices were illegal in 2015, no one has been held accountable for violating the privacy of countless Americans, and the practices have only continued.

When Congress announced its first attempt to reauthorize Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) in late 2017, it received massive scrutiny from privacy advocates who warned that the bill would provide additional loopholes for the government to continue conducting warrantless surveillance of innocent Americans, and it would ultimately be worse for civil liberties than the previous legislation.

Then when President Trump signed the FISA Reauthorization Act into law in January, he claimed that it was “NOT the same FISA law that was so wrongly abused during the election,” and that he would “always do the right thing for our country and put the safety of the American people first.”

However, reports noted that the government is actually following a pattern of legalizing practices that they have already been carrying out, which has been ongoing for years.

With the first new law in place, the FBI no longer has to apply for a warrant “when national security is involved, or when it determines that there is a ‘threat to life or serious bodily harm,” according to a report from the Intercept. The agency will also continue to have unlimited access to data collected by the NSA, even when it does not pertain to a criminal investigation.

While users are aware of the fact that Facebook has access to their data, it is also true that the social media platform has followed in the footsteps of the U.S. government by giving itself unlimited power, and then abusing that power for financial gain.

As Snowden noted, Facebook has turned into a “surveillance company” that has successfully branded itself as “social media,” even though it makes money by “exploiting and selling intimate details about the private lives of millions, far beyond the scant details you voluntarily post.”

At the end of the day, neither Facebook officials nor U.S. government officials have any business criticizing each other when it comes to willingly abusing the privacy of Americans’ data.

Data Indicates Illegal Aliens Are Exploiting U.S. Asylum With False Claims

. . .Border apprehensions, a decent proxy for border flows, plummeted. April 2017 saw the smallest number of apprehensions and inadmissibles on record, at less than 16,000. While there may be other factors at work, the likely cause of this shock was President Trump’s election: his rhetorical stance against immigration probably reduced illegal inflows almost immediately . . .

But this effect has gradually worn off. As of March 2018, apprehensions and inadmissibles have risen to nearly 50,000 again, similar to the springtime-peaks observed during the Obama years. Whatever short-term effect Trump’s rhetoric may have had, with no actual new border security measures in place, it’s wearing off. Realizing that rhetoric has real, not quickly-fading, effects is probably motivating Trump’s decision to deploy the National Guard . . .

But there’s another fascinating angle to the story of the migrant “caravan.” Many did not intend to simply enter the United States without legal permission; they intended to claim asylum. Claiming asylum means a person enters a country without legal right to do so, then asserts he cannot be deported, because deporting him would likely result in his death due to racially, religiously, politically, ethnically, or sexually based violent discrimination.

Asylum is enshrined as a right in both U.S. and international law. However, asylum has become increasingly controversial in the United States and Europe as a growing share of foreign citizens attempt to claim asylum, raising questions over whether this once-modestly-sized migration program faces abuse and misuse . . .

Asylum claims have risen in recent years for all origins, but especially for Latin American origins. While once these countries were a minority of claims of asylum, in 2016, the most recent available data, they were a substantial majority. Suspect Who Allegedly Raped a 15-Year-Old Girl Now Accused of Killing Her So She Couldn’t Testify

A 42-year-old, Quinn James, was accused of raping a then 15-year-old girl in a school parking lot last summer. Now he’s facing a murder charge after allegedly killing her while he was out on bail.

James worked as a groundskeeper at East Kentwood Public Schools where the victim, Mujey Dumbuya, was a student. She was expected to testify at his trial this month.

In connection with Mujey’s death, a second man, Gerald Bennett, has been charged with conspiracy to commit murder. According to police, James solicited Bennett through an unnamed source in Detroit, seeking assistance with the murder and disposal of the body . . .

In connection with Mujey’s death, a second man, Gerald Bennett, has been charged with conspiracy to commit murder. According to police, James solicited Bennett through an unnamed source in Detroit, seeking assistance with the murder and disposal of the body.

Prior to be hired by the school district, James’ criminal record included convictions for an armed robbery, and two counts of prisoner in possession of a weapon. But Superintendent Michael Zoerhoff said that James provided strong references from community members, and was “hired because he fit the qualifications for working as a groundskeeper.” (Read more from “Suspect Who Allegedly Raped a 15-Year-Old Girl Now Accused of Killing Her So She Couldn’t Testify” HERE)

State Senator Who Said She Hoped Trump Would Be Assassinated Is Now Making Crazy Comments About Slavery

Missouri state senator Maria Chappelle-Nadal called for reparations for former slaves on Tuesday, and took a swipe at her own party’s US Senator in the same breath.

While declaring there’s “no difference” between white Democrats and Republicans, Chappelle-Nadal said that “neither one of them give a heck about the black community, only the votes.”

Chappelle-Nadal spoke from the Senate floor, saying that she listens to the needs of her constituents who aren’t benefitting from tax cuts. She also said the black children in her district are at a disadvantage; and the senator believes reparations would help, even though she recognizes legislation supporting it would likely never pass.

Recalling her own ancestors who were slaves in the state, Chappelle-Nadal pleaded: “In Boone County, Missouri, in Callaway County, Missouri what my family contributed to making the state what it is today is incredible, and my family deserves way more than what it is getting today.”

She went on to say she would like US Senator Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) to call for reparations, and added that people in her district see McCaskill as a Republican. (Read more from “State Senator Who Said She Hoped Trump Would Be Assassinated Is Now Making Crazy Comments About Slavery” HERE)

School District Says NO to Guns, YES to Baseball Bats

In a story you’re going to be convinced originated on the satirical website The Onion, a Pennsylvania school district is arming its teachers with baseball bats.

That’s right, in response to the latest high school shooting in Florida were a gunman opened fire with an AR-15, killing 17 people, Pennsylvania teachers have a Louisville Slugger as their weapon of choice . . .

The 500 teachers in Millcreek School District, near Erie, were given 16-inch bats as part of their training this week on how to respond to school shootings, according to the Erie Times-News.

It’s part of the Trojan Response plan — we’re not making it up — which stands for: “Threat assessment,” “Run,” “Obstruct and barricade,” “Join forces,” “Attack,” and “Never give up.”

The plan is consistent with a 2008 Homeland Security recommendation that when faced with a school shooter, try to run, or hide, and as a last resort fight back, noted the Times-News. (Read more from “School District Says NO to Guns, YES to Baseball Bats” HERE)

Millcreek Teachers Encouraged to Fight Shooter If Options Fail

By Erie News. Modified district response plan includes ‘flee’ when you can and ‘fight’ when you must.

Millcreek Township School District has armed teachers with small baseball bats, and maybe resolve.

Teachers aren’t expected to confront a gunman with the bats, schools Superintendent William Hall said.

“The bats are more symbolic than anything,” Hall said. “However, we do want to have one consistent tool to have at somebody’s disposal in a classroom in the event they have to fight.”

Each of the district’s approximately 500 teachers was given a 16-inch bat Monday during in-service training on how to respond to school shootings. The revised Trojan Response plan includes more options than a lockdown, Hall said. (Read more from “Millcreek Teachers Encouraged to Fight Shooter If Options Fail” HERE)

DOJ Gives Nunes Document That Started Entire Investigation

By CNN. House Intelligence Chairman Devin Nunes’ dispute with Depuity Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and FBI Director Christopher Wray appeared to de-escalate Wednesday after Nunes was given access to the document that kicked off the FBI’s investigation into the Trump campaign and Russia.

Nunes had been threatening to hold Rosenstein and Wray in contempt — and to potentially impeach them — if the Justice Department didn’t cooperate with his committee amid stepped-up congressional Republican criticism of Rosenstein as President Donald Trump considers whether to fire him.

A Justice official told CNN that Nunes and Republican Rep. Trey Gowdy of South Carolina went to the Justice Department on Wednesday to view the document, known as an electronic communication, which details the origination of the counterintelligence investigation into Trump’s team and Russia that began in July 2016. The official said the document was no longer redacted, except for “narrowly tailored” redactions to protect the name of a foreign country and foreign agent that, if revealed, could undermine “the trust we have with this foreign nation.” (Read more from “DOJ Gives Nunes Document That Started Entire Investigation” HERE)

Justice Department Hands Over Document

By The New York Post. . .The disclosure comes after committee chair Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) threatened to “impeach” Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein if he failed to turn over the two-page memo.

“After numerous unfulfilled requests for an Electronic Communication (EC) related to the opening of the FBI’s Russia counterintelligence probe, Chairman Trey Gowdy and I met this afternoon with Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein,” Nunes said in a statement Wednesday.

“During the meeting, we were finally given access to a version of the EC that contained the information necessary to advance the Committee’s ongoing investigation of the Department of Justice and FBI.”

According to The Hill, the Justice Department only made redactions “narrowly tailored to protect the name of a foreign country and the name of a foreign agent.” (Read more from “Justice Department Hands Over Document” HERE)

California Doing All in Their Power to Stop Border Wall

California will appeal a decision allowing construction of a portion of President Donald Trump’s border wall, after a federal judge found the administration can waive environmental laws governing such projects.

California Attorney General Xavier Becerra called the proposed barrier “medieval” and vowed to continue protecting the state from “federal overreach.” The lower court decision ensures the barrier can be built on an accelerated timetable.

“When we said that a medieval wall along the U.S.-Mexico border does not belong in the 21st century, we meant it,” Becerra said. “There are environmental and public health laws in place, and we continue to believe that the Trump administration is violating those laws.” . . .

The state filed its notice of appeal Monday with the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Such filings do not include detailed legal arguments, which will appear in a subsequent brief.

Becerra sued the Trump administration in September 2017 to stop construction of a stretch of wall near San Diego, extending eastward from the Pacific Ocean. Becerra, a Democrat, argues the U.S. Department of Homeland Security cannot waive relevant provisions of the National Environmental Policy Act and the Coastal Zone Management Act, which, under normal circumstances, would impose numerous constraints on the administration’s plans. Muslim Teen Claimed Man Ripped off Her Hijab in Hate Crime. That’s Not What Happened.

By The Daily Wire. A 13-year-old Muslim girl from Virginia claimed a man approached her on the street after noticing that she was wearing a hijab, called her a “terrorist” and, while threatening her at knife-point, snatched off her Islamic headscarf.

But before you clutch your pearls and deem America a country filled with Islamophobic bigots, here’s what police are saying actually happened: the girl made the whole thing up.

Authorities have charged the teen for filing a false police report about the apparently fanaticized incident, investigators announced Tuesday . . .

The unnamed teen will face charges in juvenile court. (Read more from “Muslim Teen Claimed Man Ripped off Her Hijab in Hate Crime. That’s Not What Happened.” HERE)

Girl, 13, Lied to Police That Man Ripped off Her Hijab in Racist Attack

By Metro. Prince William County Police in Woodbridge, Virginia, discovered ‘no altercation had occurred’ after probing the teenager over the alleged attack last Friday . . .

Cops were also told that the man had held the girl’s hands behind her back during the attack.

The girl, who has not been identified, further claimed that her attacker covered her mouth after removing her head scarf to muffle her screams. (Read more from “Girl, 13, Lied to Police That Man Ripped off Her Hijab in Racist Attack” HERE)

The Four Terrible Things That Are Destroying Boys in Our Culture

. . .Let’s imagine the world the average 13-year-old boy inhabits. He has long since been exposed to hardcore pornography, and probably watches it regularly. Then puberty hits. His hormones are going haywire. His brain is hardwiring itself to focus obsessively on sex. He cannot really help it. He is now fertile, even as the girls his age, for the most part, are not. He feels the biological impulse to go out and find a sexual partner, though he does not understand this urge and his conception of human sexuality has been perverted and confused by the porn habit he developed in sixth grade . . .

Even the boys who have dads may not have male role models. Very often, despite the father’s physical presence, the mother is still the spiritual leader of the household. There are plenty of fathers who stick around but then refuse to take part in their children’s moral formation. They are warm bodies taking up space, and perhaps bringing home a paycheck, but they neither lead their families nor provide a worthwhile example to their sons . . .

There is a reason why girls outperform boys in school. Girls are not smarter, on average, but they have an easier time because the classroom is set up to reward the calm and organized demeanor more natural to them. Boys are more rambunctious; they have more physical energy; they are less able to sit still and less able to focus attentively on one dull task for a prolonged period of time. The typical classroom environment is torture for a boy. It penalizes him for being himself. It penalizes him for being a boy . . .

You might think we’ve already done enough to these boys. We’ve made our point. We’ve shoved sex in their face, deprived them of role models, and forced them into an education system that treats their personality as a disease. But we are not satisfied. Finally, in case any have survived the gauntlet, we attempt to bury them in self-loathing.

Femininity is attacked in our culture as well, but not nearly so explicitly or directly. Nobody would ever call femininity itself “toxic” or “fragile.” Nobody talks about female “privilege,” even though, as I have demonstrated, females enjoy many unique privileges. Nobody would label all women “dangerous” or “potential monsters to be feared.” These are the special denigrations reserved only for manhood. A Former Obama Official Is Attacking Rand Paul for Being… Attacked

On Wednesday, former President Barack Obama’s bus driver turned National Security Council spokesman mocked Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) for being attacked by his neighbor late last year.

Tommy Vietor’s vile comments were in a response to a tweet from Paul[:]

Vietor responded by writing: “You are a shameless hack and an idiot. Stop attacking public servants. Start doing a better job not getting beat up by your neighbor.”
