In an open letter, tech experts and leaders in the industry called for a six-month pause on AI experiments, a move that Fox News contributor Douglas Murray believes shows a “deep concern” that is growing about the risks of artificial intelligence.

The letter, which was signed by Elon Musk and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, reads, in part: “AI systems with human-competitive intelligence can pose profound risks to society … and should be planned for and managed with commensurate care. … Unfortunately, this level of planning and management is not happening.”

Murray said on “Fox & Friends” Wednesday that the request for a moratorium is extraordinary and is a sign that experts are worried.

“The fact that there has now been this stressing that we could be in trouble. This is unprecedented,” Murray told host Brian Kilmeade.

He explained that concerns are stemming from the idea that the artificial intelligence technology is able to operate at a higher level than human intelligence. Chinese Team Behind Extreme Animal Gene Experiment Says It May Lead To Super Soldiers Who Survive Nuclear Fallout

A team of military medical scientists in China says it has inserted a gene from the microscopic water bear into human embryonic stem cells and significantly increased these cells’ resistance to radiation.

They said success in this unprecedented experiment could lead to super-tough soldiers who could survive nuclear fallout.

The water bear, also known as tardigrade or moss piglet, is an eight-legged animal smaller than 1 millimetre long and the hardiest creature on Earth. Over years of scientific testing, it has survived -200 degrees Celsius, more than anour hour in boiling water and after flying in space. . .

The Chinese team said it had found a way to introduce this gene into human DNA using CRISPR/Cas9, a gene-editing tool now available in most bio-labs.

In their laboratory experiment, nearly 90 per cent of the human embryonic cells carrying the water bear gene survived a lethal exposure to X-ray radiation, according to the team led by professor Yue Wen with the radiation biotechnology laboratory at the Academy of Military Sciences, Beijing. Saudi Arabia Set To Join Anti-West Bloc With China And Russia

Saudi Arabia is joining an anti-Western influence bloc formed by Russia and China, in a sign of Riyadh’s deepening ties with Beijing as the US pivots away from the Middle East.

The kingdom’s cabinet approved a plan to join the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) as a “dialogue partner”, a precursor to being granted full membership, SPA, the Saudis’ state news agency, announced on Wednesday.

Formed in 2001 by Russia, China and former Soviet states in Central Asia, the SCO is a political and security bloc of countries spanning much of Eurasia and has expanded to include India and Pakistan, with a view to challenging Western influence in the region.

Iran also signed documents for full membership last year.

The SCO holds an annual summit to discuss economic cooperation and mutual security, often focusing on terrorism, separatism and extremism, though divergent interests limit the group’s effectiveness. Member states are planning a “counter-terrorism exercise” in Russia this August, though the SCO is not a military alliance. ‘I Couldn’t Believe It’: Classmate Remembers Nashville Shooter As ‘Quiet’ Girl Who ‘Looked So Innocent’

A former classmate of the suspected Nashville, Tennessee, school shooter remembered his acquaintance as a “quiet” girl who “looked so innocent,” noting to the Daily Caller News Foundation that the recent events shocked him.

On Monday, 28-year-old Audrey Hale, a woman who was transgender and went by “he/him” pronouns, shot through the doors of The Covenant School and opened fire, killing three kids and three adults, before being fatally shot by police. Ashshahid Muhammad, who made the 2016 Nossi College of Art Dean’s list with Hale, told the DCNF that when he saw the news in Nashville, he couldn’t believe his former classmate was involved.

“I went to school with her and there was nothing negative that I saw,” Muhammad told the DCNF. “She was very quiet, stayed to herself. She was just quiet, you know, like when I heard about the shooting, when I saw the picture of the person, I couldn’t believe it was her, because, like I said, she looked so innocent. If you were around her in the school, she looked like she wouldn’t hurt a fly. She looked like just a little sweet person.”

Hale entered The Covenant School on Monday around 10:13 a.m. with two “assault-type” rifles and one handgun. Prior to the shooting, Hale had legally purchased seven firearms and was undergoing medical care for an “emotional disorder.”

Police “strongly believe” Hale had other targets such as a local mall and family members, but “too much security” turned her away. Hale, a former student at the school, “had some history there” and “possibly some resentment,” according to law enforcement officials, who will not release Hale’s manifesto.

Joe Biden Asks Americans To Pressure Congress To Ban ‘Assault Weapons’

President Joe Biden urged Americans to figure out which members of Congress do not support an “assault weapons” ban and pressure them to do so in another push for gun control Tuesday.

“The majority of the American people think having assault weapons is bizarre, it’s a crazy idea,” he said, per the Hill.

Biden noted that he could not do any more on “assault weapons” via executive action, so he urged Americans to figure out where their representatives stand on the issue and pressure them.

He said, “Because I want you to know who isn’t doing it, who isn’t helping. Put pressure on them.”

Surveillance Footage Shows Nashville Shooter Used A Carbine Which Fires Pistol Rounds, Not An AR-15

Surveillance photographs and video footage shows the 28-year-old transgender suspect who attacked the Nashville Christian school was using a carbine which fires pistol rounds, not an AR-15.

The 28-year-old was armed with three firearms, and police photos of the guns show that an AR-15 was not one them.

The firearms were an AR-pistol, a handgun, and a carbine. The type of carbine possessed by the attacker uses 9mm or .40 caliber handgun rounds.

From surveillance video, it appears the attacker may have used the AR-pistol to shoot and shatter the glass on the front door. But in photos and videos that show her walking the halls, looking for potential targets, she is holding the carbine.

Vatican: Pope Francis Hospitalized In Rome

Pope Francis will be hospitalized in Rome for a “few days” after a scheduled checkup on Wednesday, according to the Vatican.

Francis, 86, visited the Gemelli Hospital Wednesday afternoon for his checkup, Holy See spokesman Matteo Bruni said. The Vatican later said that Francis went to the hospital for a respiratory infection after experiencing breathing difficulties and will remain hospitalized for a “few days,” the BBC reported. The pope canceled his audiences through Friday.

A statement from the Vatican said that the pope’s condition would “require a few days of appropriate hospital medical therapy.”

“Pope Francis is touched by the many messages received and expresses his gratitude for the closeness and prayer,” the statement added. The pope appeared to be in relatively good condition when he was in front of a general audience earlier on Wednesday, according to the Associated Press. Governor Signs Legislation Granting $1 Million In Funding To Pro-Life Pregnancy Centers

West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice signed legislation Wednesday granting more than $1 million in funding to pro-life crisis pregnancy centers.

HB 2002 increases support for families by allocating $1 million in funding to “pregnancy help organizations,” which the bill says must “not perform, prescribe, refer for or encourage abortion.”

Governor Justice signed the bill after it passed the House 31-1.

“West Virginia’s pregnancy centers empower women and impact lives for the better every day,” Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America said in a statement provided to the Daily Caller. “These organizations provide free pregnancy tests, ultrasounds, medical exams, counseling, parent classes, financial classes, and resources such as food, diapers, clothing, and financial assistance for housing and utilities. Mysterious Signs and Wonders: ‘Monstrous’ Gamma-ray Burst Brightest Seen Since ‘Human Civilization Began’, Pointed Directly at Earth

A gamma-ray burst, which lit up our galaxy last October, was the “brightest burst” ever seen and a once-in-10,000-year explosion, according to NASA.

Astronomers have been studying the extragalactic burst, nicknamed BOAT for the “brightest of all time,” for months after it triggered detectors on numerous spacecraft. NASA revealed astronomers’ conclusions Wednesday, calling the Oct. 9 blast the brightest since the start of mankind.

“It is just an absolutely monstrous burst. It is extremely extraordinary; we’ve never seen anything remotely close to it,” Eric Burns, assistant professor of physics and astronomy at Louisiana State University, told reporters at the 20th meeting of the American Astronomical Society’s High Energy Astrophysics Division in Hawaii.

“The BOAT is a once-in-10,000-year event,” Burns added. “So, there’s a reasonable chance this is the brightest gamma-ray burst to hit Earth since human civilization began.”

While the burst — known as GRB 221009A — was so bright it blinded most gamma-ray instruments in space, scientists were able to reconstruct the information from data collected by the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. The results were confirmed with data and analysis from Russian and Chinese teams. Together, they concluded that the burst was 70 times brighter than any others seen.

Mysterious Gamma Ray Burst Puzzles Astronomers

By JENNIFER OUELLETTE. [W]e now have new data from follow-up observations in several new papers published in a special focus issue of the Astrophysical Journal Letters. The findings confirmed that GRB 221009A was indeed the BOAT (“brightest of all time”), appearing especially bright because its narrow jet was pointing directly at Earth. “It’s probably the brightest event to hit Earth since human civilization began,” Eric Burns, an astronomer at Louisiana State University, told New Scientist. “The energy of this thing is so extreme that if you took the entire sun and you converted all of it into pure energy, it still wouldn’t match this event. There’s just nothing comparable.”

But the various analyses also yielded several surprising results that puzzle astronomers and may lead to a significant overhaul of our current models of gamma-ray bursts. For instance, a supernova should have occurred a few weeks after the initial burst, but astronomers have yet to detect one. Radio data from observations of the afterglow didn’t match predictions of existing models, and astronomers detected rare extended rings of X-ray light echoes from the initial blast in distant dust clouds.
