Republicans Introduce Plan to Verify U.S. Citizenship to Safeguard Voting Rights

In a move aimed at reinforcing the integrity of the electoral system, Republicans on the Senate Committee on Rules and Administration, led by Sen. Katie Britt (R-AL), have unveiled the “Citizen Ballot Protection Act.” This legislation empowers states to verify the American citizenship of individuals registering to vote via mail, underlining the importance of safeguarding the sacred right to vote for American citizens.

The proposed legislation addresses concerns raised by Republicans who argue that certain blue states, counties, and cities are opening voting rights to foreign nationals, particularly in municipal elections. Sen. Katie Britt emphasized the need for commonsense measures to ensure that voting remains an exclusive right for American citizens. She stated, “Voting in our country is a sacred right that must solely be limited to American citizens. To allow states to uphold this principle should be simple commonsense.”

Sen. Britt expressed concern over certain cities allowing noncitizens to participate in local elections, asserting that such practices disenfranchise hardworking American citizens, undermine the faith in the electoral system, and disrespect those who legally went through the citizenship process. The legislation, named the “Citizen Ballot Protection Act,” seeks to amend the National Voting Rights Act, providing states with the authority to demand proof of citizenship for applicants registering to vote by mail in state and federal elections.

The legislation is co-sponsored by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and several other Republican senators, including Deb Fischer, Ted Cruz, Shelley Moore Capito, Roger Wicker, Cindy Hyde-Smith, and Bill Hagerty.

This legislative initiative comes on the heels of accusations made by Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-NY) against New York City officials. She alleged that there were attempts to register newly arrived border crossers and illegal aliens living in city shelters, following the city Democrats’ push to grant municipal voting rights to nearly a million illegal aliens in 2021.
