Obama Blames Antipathy Toward Government for Flint Water Crisis

Widespread water contamination in Flint, Michigan, was a “man-made disaster” brought about in part by a political preference for small government, President Barack Obama in a visit on Wednesday to the city.

In a speech to about 1,000 residents, Obama urged them to resist assumptions that their children have been permanently harmed by consuming water with lead, and blamed “a mindset that believes that less government is the highest good, no matter what.” He didn’t mention Michigan’s Republican governor, Rick Snyder, who addressed the audience earlier and professes the virtues of smaller government. Snyder has borne much of the blame for the contamination.

“I do not believe that anybody consciously wanted to hurt the people in Flint, and this is not the place to sort every screw-up that resulted in contaminated water,” Obama said. “This myth that government is always the enemy — that forgets that our government is us, that it’s an extension of us, ourselves. That attitude is as corrosive to democracy as the stuff that resulted in lead in your water.”

Prior to Obama’s remarks, Snyder was booed as he publicly apologized to the same audience for the mishaps that led to the contamination. Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette on April 20 charged two state officials and one city official with felonies related to the contamination. Hepatitis C Deaths Hit All-Time High in United States

Hepatitis C-related deaths reached an all-time high in 2014, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Wednesday, surpassing total combined deaths from 60 other infectious diseases including HIV, pneumococcal disease and tuberculosis. The increase occurred despite recent advances in medications that can cure most infections within three months.

“Not everyone is getting tested and diagnosed, people don’t get referred to care as fully as they should, and then they are not being placed on treatment,” said Dr. John Ward, director of CDC’s division of viral hepatitis.

At the same time, surveillance data analyzed by the CDC shows an alarming uptick in new cases of hepatitis C, mainly among those with a history of using injectable drugs. From 2010 to 2014, new cases of hepatitis C infection more than doubled. Because hepatitis C has few noticeable symptoms, said Ward, the 2,194 cases reported in 2014 are likely only the tip of the iceberg. Trump Dodges on Whether He’s Met With Vladimir Putin: ‘I Don’t Want to Say’ [+video]

Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump wouldn’t say Wednesday whether he had ever met with or spoken to Russian president Vladimir Putin.

CNN’s Wolf Blitzer asked him about Russian fighter jets buzzing U.S. ships, the latest in a series of military provocations by Russia . . .

“Have you ever met with Putin? Have you ever spoken with him?” Blitzer asked.

“Uh, I don’t want to say,” Trump said. “But I think I’ll have a good relationship with him. Now, I may not. I’ll know pretty quickly, but I would call him and say, ‘Don’t ever do it again. Don’t ever do that again’ . . .

Putin and Trump have exchanged pleasantries through the media. Putin called Trump “bright and talented” late last year, and he responded on Morning Joe that Putin is a “leader” and the compliment meant a lot coming from someone who “heads up Russia.” That statement even puzzled MSNBC host Joe Scarborough, who pointed out Putin’s authoritarianism and reported history of killing journalists. Watch: As FDA Expands RU-486 Abortions, Former Abortionist Shows What They Look Like

The abortion industry and the Obama administration have made it easier than ever to have a medication abortion, a procedure little known or understood outside medical circles. Dr. Anthony Levatino, who performed more than 1,200 abortions before becoming a pro-life advocate, has released a video detailing each step of the process.

The Live Action video eschews graphic imagery in favor of animation that accurately depicts the two-step process, which takes place over two to three days.

“An RU-486 abortion cuts off blood and nutrients to the growing preborn baby, slowly starving her inside the mother’s womb,” Live Action founder Lila Rose explains in a statement released today.

“It is important to note that, even after it has been taken, it is possible to reverse the effects of RU-486 and save the baby if progesterone is administered – the sooner, the better,” Dr. Levatino says in the video.

“Then the mother takes another drug” – misoprostol, conventionally known as Cytotec – “that causes intense contractions and heavy bleeding to force her dead baby from her womb,” Rose adds. (Read more from “Watch: As FDA Expands RU-486 Abortions, Former Abortionist Shows What They Look Like” HERE)

The Unexpected Thing That Caused an Alaska Plane Crash That Killed 4

A small airplane hit a bald eagle before crashing and bursting into flames just north of Anchorage last month, killing all four people onboard, authorities said Wednesday.

It is the nation’s first civilian plane crash to result in deaths after an impact with a bald eagle, said Shaun Williams, a National Transportation Safety Board investigator. There have been other crashes involving eagle strikes that resulted in serious injuries, he said.

The pilot, co-pilot and two passengers died when the plane went down April 20 near a small airport about 20 miles north of downtown Anchorage. They were conducting an aerial survey for a private firm. (Read more from “The Unexpected Thing That Caused an Alaska Plane Crash That Killed 4” HERE)

FDA Launches $35.7 Million LGBT Anti-Smoking Campaign [+video]

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have just launched an anti-tobacco campaign focused on young adults who are lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender.

The new campaign, “This Free Life,” costs $35.7 million that was collected from the tobacco industry.

According to the FDA, the campaign “uses authentic and credible messages from members of the LGBT community encouraging other members to be tobacco-free.”

“This Free Life will challenge the perception that tobacco use is a necessary part of being LGBT and show that living tobacco-free is an important factor in leading a long and healthy life. This Free Life uses a variety of integrated marketing tactics including paid media, engagement through multiple digital platforms, and outreach at the local level,” the FDA campaign material says. Navy SEAL Killed as ISIS Overruns Kurdish Positions in Iraq

A U.S. Navy SEAL died in combat Tuesday while embedded with Kurdish peshmerga soldiers in a battle against the Islamic State, Department of Defense sources said.

The SEAL, whose name and rank were not immediately disclosed, died during an Islamic State attack on the town of Tel Skuf, about 17 miles north of the terrorist army’s stronghold of Mosul.

Late in the day, the Associated Press identified him as Special Warfare Operator 1st Class Charlie Keating IV, 31, saying the name was released by Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey.

Keating, grandson of the late Arizona financier Charles Keating, grew up in Phoenix and attended the Naval Academy before becoming a SEAL based out of Coronado, Calif., AP reported.

Keating was conducting an advise-and-assist mission with the peshmerga, a Kurdish fighting force allied with the U.S.-led coalition in the war against the Islamic State, the Islamist militant group also known as ISIS.

“It shows you it’s a serious fight that we have to wage in Iraq,” Defense Secretary Ash Carter said in announcing the “combat death” in Stuttgart, Germany, without releasing the name, AP reported.

Military officials told the wire service that Keating died after being hit by small arms fire. He died around 9:33 a.m. local time from a gunshot wound, two defense officials told Navy Times.

Presumably, U.S. troops performing that mission are not on forward edge of the front lines and do not directly participate in fighting. The Pentagon said Keating was 2 to 3 miles behind the front lines when he was killed.

The combat fatality is the third among U.S. troops in Iraq since the 2014 launch of Operation Inherent Resolve, the coalition campaign against ISIS in Iraq and Syria.

Marine Staff Sgt. Louis F. Cardin died March 21 during an ISIS rocket attack at an outpost near the town of Makhmour, about 40 miles southeast of Mosul.

And U.S. Army Special Forces Master Sgt. Joshua Wheeler, who also was performing the advise-and-assist mission, died from enemy fire in October during a hostage rescue operation in Iraq.

White House spokesman Josh Earnest said President Barack Obama had been briefed on the incident and extended condolences to Keating’s family. He said the incident was a “vivid reminder” of the dangers facing U.S. troops in Iraq and Syria.

“They are taking grave risks to protect our country. We owe them a deep debt of gratitude,” Earnest said, AP reported.

Old political hands in Washington and Arizona recall Keating’s grandfather as a politically active developer and financier who became embroiled in a savings and loan scandal that ensnared five U.S. senators, including Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz. The elder Keating died in 2014.

Of the “Keating Five”–the others were Alan Cranston, D-Calif.; Dennis DeConcini, D-Ariz.; John Glenn, D-Ohio; and Donald Riegle, D-Mich.–McCain is the only one still serving on Capitol Hill.

The ability of ISIS forces to break through peshmerga lines Tuesday underscores how the terrorist army is still able to mount offensive operations despite nearly two years of coalition airstrikes.

The ISIS attack comprised 400 fighters and multiple car bombs and suicide bombers.

The attack also was a bellwether for the kind of tactics ISIS likely will use when Iraqi and Kurdish forces launch a campaign to take back nearby Mosul, a city of more than 1 million and the most populous city controlled by ISIS in Iraq.

Coalition and peshmerga reports indicate Mosul is heavily defended by multiple rings of improvised explosive devices and booby traps. Peshmerga troops say they anticipate ISIS fighters will launch waves of suicide attacks as in past battles.

According to unconfirmed reports from peshmerga soldiers in the area, the attacking ISIS fighters were able to break through Kurdish lines before a peshmerga counterattack supported by more than 20 U.S. airstrikes turned them back.

Fighting was ongoing and Kurdish authorities had sealed off roads to the area for safety.

Peshmerga troops reported multiple ISIS attacks Tuesday in the area around Mosul, including at front-line positions near Gwer, about 18 miles south of Mosul. (For more from the author of “Navy SEAL Killed as ISIS Overruns Kurdish Positions in Iraq” please click HERE)

Dem AG Targets 90 Conservative Groups in Climate Change Racketeering Suit

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThe attorney general of the U.S. Virgin Islands is targeting dozens of conservative and libertarian organizations in a racketeering lawsuit against climate change skeptics that has been widely described as an effort to silence political opponents.

In a subpoena issued in March, the office of USVI attorney general Claude Walker demanded from Exxon Mobil copies of communications between the oil company and 90 different political and policy organizations “and any other organizations engaged in research or advocacy concerning Climate Change or policies.”

The subpoena was part of a national, coordinated legal campaign by state attorneys general and left-wing advocacy groups to use the legal system against companies and organizations that disagree with and advocate against Democratic policies to address global climate change.

The existence of the subpoena was first reported by the Wall Street Journal in April. A newly released copy obtained by the Washington Free Beacon reveals the names of the organizations targeted in the effort, which had previously been redacted.

Those organizations include some of the nation’s preeminent conservative and libertarian nonprofit groups. The AG is requesting Exxon Mobil communications with the Heritage Foundation, the Cato Institute, the Federalist Society, the Hoover Institution, the Reason Foundation, and the Mercatus Institute, among other groups. Daughter of Muslim Ruler Imprisoned for Doing Something Amazing

maxresdefaultThe daughter of a Muslim ruler in the Middle East who embraced Christianity after a miraculous encounter with Jesus Christ has been imprisoned for her faith, according to a local ministry.

Evangelist Paul Siniraj, founder of Bibles For Mideast, an undercover Bible smuggling ministry that gets the Word of God into some of the most repressive Muslim countries, shared the story of 16-year-old Najima, once a devout Muslim who followed the Five Pillars of Islam, never missed the required five-times-a-day prayers, gave to the poor, and even fasted, as Islamic law requires.

However, while studying at a Western university, she noticed a small piece of paper stuck in a crease at the table at which she was sitting. It was part of a Bible tract about Jesus Christ . . .

The young woman threw the tract in the trash can, thinking that would be the end of it, but the verse kept lingering in her mind. One night, while Najima lay awake pondering the verse, a presence came into the room, filling the room with blinding light . . .

Filled with joy, the young woman told her friends and family about her newfound faith. However, her father and brothers were filled with rage and stripped her naked and bound her to a chair fixed to a metal plate with which they wanted to electrocute her. She asked them to lay a Bible in her lap. (Read more from “Daughter of Muslim Ruler Imprisoned for Doing Something Amazing” HERE)

After Big Loss Today in Indiana, Cruz Drops Out

cruz at obama care conferenceCNN is reporting that Cruz is dropping out of the race after his significant loss in Indiana today.

In what some have characterized as a “devastating blow,” it appears Trump took Indiana with 53.5% of the vote. At the time of this post, 37% of Indiana precincts have reported.

Technically, Senator Cruz is characterizing the end of his campaign as a “suspension.” He said just a few minutes ago that, “We are suspending our campaign.”

The race between Senator Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton is harder to call, with the vote appearing split almost down the middle.
