One Question in a Poll of College Students Crystallizes the Debate Over Free Speech

Free speech just isn’t as cool as it used to be, according to a Gallup and the Knight Foundation study of college students’ views on the subject.

The news isn’t great for this bedrock principle in America’s higher-learning institutions. College students overwhelmingly support free speech in the abstract, but when it comes to the real world, they are accepting of restrictions on it, which is in effect, not very supportive of free speech. And the numbers have gotten worse for speech on a lot of fronts since 2016.

Almost 90 percent of students say protection of free speech is extremely or very important to American democracy, but two-thirds also believe hate speech shouldn’t be protected by the First Amendment, and 83 percent support free-speech zones on campus, to contain pre-approved protests and distribution of messages. Not exactly the open inquiry we used to love.

There is some good news. In question after question, it appears the forces that are found shouting down speakers like Christina Hoff Sommers or burning Berkeley or attacking Charles Murray at Middlebury are a very loud minority. “Nine in 10 students say violence is ‘never acceptable’” to counter speech and a solid majority of 62 percent believe shouting down speakers is “never acceptable.” This leaves too-large percentages who think violence and shouting down are fine, but the vast majority of college students are in favor of traditional forms of protest without shutting down speech. McCain’s Daughter Updates Public on His Future After Cancer Treatments

Meghan McCain stated in an interview this week that there is still no time table for her father’s return to the U.S. Senate, but she’s hopeful it may be by this summer.

“I wish I had an exact date, but I just don’t,” Meghan told Phoenix talk radio station KTAR-FM on Tuesday. “I am very cautiously optimistic about the summer, yes.”

“As everyone knows especially with this cancer, you have to take it scan by scan but he is doing really good, much better than I think people anticipated,” she added. “He’s doing very well and I feel very lucky that he is doing so well.”

The 81-year-old Arizona Republican senator is fighting an aggressive form of brain cancer called glioblastoma, which was diagnosed last July.

KTAR reported that the original tumor was removed after it was discovered, but in November a second tumor returned in the same area.

During this time period the lawmaker also tore both of his Achilles’ tendons.

According to the Arizona Republic, McCain continues to undergo chemotherapy, radiation treatments and physical therapy as he remains living at his Sedona ranch about an hour and a half’s drive north of Phoenix.

McCain left Washington in mid-December due to the side effects of chemotherapy and has not returned since.

His return to Capitol Hill was expected some time in January, but the senator was not able to meet that goal, due to his weakened immune system.

McCain told Politico last month that “everybody is worried about him getting the flu.”

The typical survival period for those diagnosed with glioblastoma is between 12 to 15 months, though a small percentage can live up to five years or more.

McCain said her father is still mentally “100 percent there,” but physically the treatments have taken their toll.

The lawmaker has continued to issue statements through his office and remains active on Twitter.

The senator’s wife, Cindy McCain, shot down rumors earlier this month that her husband has plans to resign from office.

She wrote, “Contrary to popular believe @SenJohnMcCain is doing fine and has no intention of resigning!” (For more from the author of “McCain’s Daughter Updates Public on His Future After Cancer Treatments” please click HERE)

School District Punishing Hundreds of Students Who Participated in Walkout

A school district in South Carolina said students who walked out of class earlier this week as part of the nationwide walkouts will be cited for cutting class, the Associated Press reported.

About 530 students participated in walkouts at about 12 high schools in the Greenville County School district, the largest school district in South Carolina, spokeswoman Beth Brotherton said.

Ahead of the walkout, school officials had said they were cautioning students against taking part, according to the AP.

Students across the country walked out of their classrooms Wednesday to protest gun violence and demand change. (Read more from “School District Punishing Hundreds of Students Who Participated in Walkout” HERE)

California Now Pushes Abortion by Depicting Pregnant Women as Stupid

California has a reason for its requirement that pro-life crisis pregnancy centers promote local abortionists: It thinks women are stupid.

That’s how the Alliance Defending Freedom sums up the state’s attitude in a brief filed with the U.S. Supreme Court defending the non-profit centers in their lawsuit against a state law forcing them to violate their faith-based beliefs regarding abortion.

“California’s arguments about preventing confusion sound in paternalism and exude a low view of women navigating unplanned pregnancies,” says the new ADF filing.

“The state assumes these women are unable to make phone calls, search the internet, or ask basic questions of prospective service providers.”

The California case, National Institute of Family and Life Advocates vs. Becerra, centers on whether local governments can require pro-life crisis pregnancy centers – where women can get counseling, diapers, rent money and more – to inform their clients of free local abortion services and provide contact information. Bernie Addresses Anti-Gun Teenagers… While Surrounded by Armed Guards

On Wednesday, Bernie Sanders, who has captured the imagination of impressionable, gullible teenagers and young adults with his paeans to socialism, decided to seize the moment and join students who left their high schools to demonstrate in favor of gun control.

As would be expected, there were calls to ban guns outright:

Sanders himself has constantly hedged his bets regarding guns; on the one hand, he said in 2016, “Do I think the victims of a crime with a gun should be able to sue the manufacturer? No, I don’t.” (Read more from “Bernie Addresses Anti-Gun Teenagers… While Surrounded by Armed Guards” HERE)

Nanny State Kills Bill to Let Dying Patients Use Non-Gov’t Approved Treatments

Lawmakers on Capitol Hill narrowly defeated a bill that would have allowed terminally ill patients who have exhausted other treatments to access drugs and therapies even without full Food and Drug Administration approval.

According to National Review, the so-called “Right to Try” legislation missed the two-thirds majority vote required for passage. A Senate version of the bill has already been passed.

Under the bill’s provision, qualifying patients would legally have access to pharmaceuticals with at least Phase 1 approval in clinical studies. The legislation would not, however, compel drug companies to make their products available to patients seeking them.

The bill has found support among many conservative groups, including the Goldwater Institute. That organization’s president and CEO said the House vote is a roadblock, not a deterrent, in the ultimate goal of securing the right of Americans to “exercise their freedom to fight to live.”

Victor Riches said the failure of supporters to pass the legislation is the result of “scare tactics, falsehoods, and innuendo” from lobbyists seeking to defeat it.

A letter signed by dozens of organizations and sent to congressmen urged them to vote against the bill, suggesting its passage would “likely do more harm than good.”

For its proponents, however, the idea of providing people hope in an otherwise desperate situation is worth dismissing concerns that “Right to Try” could potentially undermine the FDA’s regulatory power.

GOP Rep. Joe Barton of Texas responded to those who say the bill can give people false hope that a miracle drug might save their lives.

“When you have no hope, perhaps false hope is better than no hope at all,” he said.

According to Barton, he holds that position despite having seen his brother die after entering a trial involving an experimental medication.

“Give hope a chance,” the congressman said, echoing the sentiment of many supporters.

Frank Mongiello, who is living with Lou Gehrig’s disease, emphasized the importance of hope to individuals with terminal illnesses.

“There is no such thing as false hope,” he said. “Because while there is breath, there is hope.”

The concept behind the “Right to Try” bill has been endorsed by numerous GOP leaders, including President Donald Trump, who addressed the issue in his State of the Union speech earlier this year, according to Fox News.

“Patients with terminal conditions, terminal illness, should have access to experimental treatment immediately that could potentially save their lives,” he said.

Vice President Mike Pence has also been clear in expressing his support, including in a tweet he posted in January.

Citing a meeting with Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, Pence offered a firm endorsement of the proposal.

“Let’s get this DONE,” he wrote.

According to an FDA spokesperson, Gottlieb and Pence discussed “how to advance this measure in a way that protects patients and provides them with the potentially lifesaving opportunities they deserve.” (For more from the author of “Nanny State Kills Bill to Let Dying Patients Use Non-Gov’t Approved Treatments” please click HERE)

E-Cigarettes Full of Cancer-Causing Toxins

Smoking e-cigarettes delivers cancer-causing chemicals that get into the body — and popular fruity flavors appear to be the worst, researchers reported Monday.

They said teenagers who try vaping may be poisoning themselves with many of the same chemicals that make traditional cigarettes so deadly.

Tests on teenagers show that those who smoke tobacco-based cigarettes as well have the highest levels of these chemicals in their bodies, but those who vape e-cigarettes also have higher levels of the cancer-causing chemicals than nonsmokers do, the team at the University of California, San Francisco, found.

“The presence of harmful ingredients in e-cigarette vapor has been established‍; we can now say that these chemicals are found in the body of human adolescents who use these products,” they wrote in their report, published in the journal Pediatrics.

E-cigarettes use a device that delivers fluid laced with nicotine and flavors, creating a smoke-like haze. (Read more from “E-Cigarettes Full of Cancer-Causing Toxins” HERE)

Dog Dies After Airline Forces It Into Overhead Bin

On Monday night, a dog died in a plane after a United Airlines flight attendant forced the dog into an overhead bin.

Maggie Gremminger, a passenger on a flight from Houston to New York’s LaGuardia Airport, uploaded a photo of the dog’s owners on Twitter. “I want to help this woman and her daughter. They lost their dog because of an @united flight attendant. My heart is broken,” reads the image caption.

The Points Guy reports that during their flight, an attendant insisted that the woman put her dog, which was held in a TSA-approved pet carrier, in an overhead bin for the rest of the flight . . .

A United spokesperson addressed the incident in a statement to The Points Guy: “This was a tragic accident that should never have occurred, as pets should never be placed in the overhead bin. We assume full responsibility for this tragedy and express our deepest condolences to the family and are committed to supporting them. We are thoroughly investigating what occurred to prevent this from ever happening again.” (Read more from “Dog Dies After Airline Forces It Into Overhead Bin” HERE)

Court Upholds Trump’s Expanded Abortion-Pill Exemptions

When President Obama and his Democratic colleagues in Congress adopted Obamacare, they required abortion coverage, with no exemptions, to the delight of the abortion industry . . .

The U.S. Supreme Court ordered the government to expand those exemptions when it ruled in the Hobby Lobby case, and President Trump widen the exemptions even further.

Now a federal court has ruled the Trump administration’s changes will stand, determining that the state of Massachusetts, which wanted to reverse course, has no standing in the case.

The ruling this week comes from U.S. District Judge Nathaniel Gorton in the state’s lawsuit against several federal agencies and their leaders.

“This court finds that plaintiff has failed to set forth specific facts demonstrating that it is likely to incur an injury caused by defendants’ conduct,” the judge wrote. “Accordingly, the court declines, at this time, to address the merits of the Commonwealth’s statutory or constitutional claims.” (Read more from “Court Upholds Trump’s Expanded Abortion-Pill Exemptions” HERE)
