Why Are Uneducated White Women Dying Sooner?

Authors of a new study published in last month’s edition of the Journal of Health Affairs found that White women lacking a high school diploma experienced a five-year decline in average life expectancy from 1990-2008, the largest of any demographic in the report “Differences In Life Expectancy Due to Race and Educational Differences Are Widening, And Many May Not Catch Up.”

When it comes to health in the U.S., researchers say there is a sharp divide in average life expectancy based upon income. Those with higher incomes and education tend to live longer than those who don’t. It’s a statistical reality that has been observed by medical researchers for many years.

The exact reasons for this sharp decline, however, have baffled researchers, including S. Jay Olshansky, the study’s lead researcher. “We actually don’t know the exact reasons why it’s happened,” said Olshansky, who studies human longevity at the University of Illinois-Chicago. “I wish we did.”

Olshansky notes that such a drop is almost unheard of for any demographic in the history of the U.S. Although racial minorities and poorer Americans have historically lagged behind White middle class citizens, gains or declines for any group are usually small and gradual.

“If you look at the history of longevity in the United States, there have been no dramatic negative or positive shocks,” Olshansky says. “With the exception of the 1918 influenza pandemic, everything has been relatively steady, slow changes. This is a five-year drop in an 18-year time period. That’s dramatic.”

It’s easy to become inured to the state of abortion in the United States, but every so often someone sends a shock to the system.

In a new book about the history of Roe, Abuse of Discretion, lawyer Clarke Forsythe combs through the historical record of the Supreme Court’s decision, from case files to personal papers, to show exactly how pell-mell the verdict was. And in the course of all this he highlights how out-of-the-norm America’s abortion regime is.

The United States is an outlier when it comes to the scope of the abortion “right.” The United States is one of approximately ten nations (of 195) that allow abortion after fourteen weeks of gestation.

It’s true that sometimes people just suck. Take the case of a Dairy Queen customer in Hopkins, Minn., who last week stole a $20 bill from a blind man when he dropped it unknowingly on the floor. It’s also true, however, that there are some really awesome human beings in the world, like Dairy Queen Manager, Joey Prusak, who saw the whole slimy act go down and responded in the most amazing way.

According to ABC, when Prusak, 19, first saw the woman bend down and scoop up the man’s money, he thought surely she would just hand it back to him. When she put it in her purse instead, he wasn’t going to stand for it.

He first asked her to return it, but she actually said no and tried to make up a story that it was really hers. Prusak called b.s. on that. He told ABC:

I told her ‘Ma’am, you can either return the $20 bill or you can leave the store, because I’m not going to serve someone as disrespectful as you.’

A tattoo parlor in Raleigh, North Carolina reportedly took food stamps as payment for tattoos.

The shop is called Addiction Tattooz. Its owner, Clifford Craig Tittle, was arrested after police discovered that he was accepting Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards as payment. EBT cards look and function like a debit card but actually store “food stamp” subsidies. The cards are only supposed to be used to purchase food.

Tittle accepted EBT cards at least four separate times, revealed the Agriculture Department.

As reported by The Daily Caller, “On Sept. 4 two people charged $421 and $417.61 to EBT cards (in addition to cash) for work at Ink Addiction Tattooz…

The mother of Aaron Alexis, the gunman who killed 12 people at the Washington Navy Yard, said today that her “heart is broken,” but she is “glad” that he can no longer do harm to anyone. Alexis’ mother, Cathleen Alexis, read a brief statement to reporters in response to her son’s murderous rampage Monday at the Navy Yard, saying she had no idea why he would do such a thing.

“Our son Aaron Alexis has murdered 12 people and wounded several others,” she said in the statement. “His actions have had a profound and everlasting effect on the families of the victims. I don’t know why he did what he did and I’ll never be able to ask him why.” “Aaron is now in a place where he can no longer do harm to anyone and for that I am glad.

To the families of the victims I am so, so very sorry that this happened,” she said. “My heart is broken.” Alexis’ family has spoken only briefly about their son since the shooting on Monday morning, in which Alexis entered the Navy base where he was set to begin an IT contracting job and opened fire on employees.

Twelve individuals were killed before law enforcement officers were able to shoot and kill Alexis.

On Tuesday, Alexis’s stepfather told the Daily Mail that Alexis was walking out of the World Trade Center subway stop when the first tower collapsed, and that he stayed to help pull bodies from the rubble.

Christmas is still several months away, but one North Carolina boy is already asking Santa to help his twin sister who is bullied at school.

Karen Suffern, a single mother of the fraternal twins, told CNN that she asked them to write their letters early this year because she wanted to have enough time to save for the holidays. She expected they would ask for expensive electronics.

She cried when she read 8-year-old Ryan’s letter. All he wanted was for Santa to help his sister Amber.

Dear Santa,

My mom said to send you a Christmas list. I wanted a remote control car and helicopter but I do not want that anymore. Kids at school are still picking on Amber and it is not fair because she does not do anything to them and it makes me mad. I prayed they would stop, but God is busy and I need your help. Is it against the rules to give up gifts early? Can you ask Big Time Rush to come to Amber’s birthday party? It will make her so happy. If you do not get them to come that is fine, just get her everything she asked for…

Tim Tebow is long gone from this town.

He was released by the Jets on April 29 and is now nothing more than an afterthought in New York. But Giants cornerback Prince Amukamara is now being compared to Tebow, who was released by the Patriots on Aug. 31.

The comparison doesn’t have to do with their play on the field, but rather their actions off the field.

Big Blue’s first-round draft pick in 2011 told Muscle and Fitness that he never drinks alcohol, and is committed to staying celibate.

A Los Angeles woman is suing an area hospital after one of its surgeons affixed a fake mustache to her upper lip and fake tears and then photographed her – all while she was still under anesthesia.

ABC News reports the unnamed patient, who also worked at Torrance Memorial Medical Center, where the procedure was performed October 2011, also hit her unidentified anesthesiologist with a raft of incendiary legal claims.

The patient says she learned of the bizarre photos from co-workers who had seen them after returning to work as a surgical supply purchaser at the hospital.

“Perhaps the most vulnerable position any human being will ever endure in their life is a time when they are placed under full anesthesia,” reportedly reads the lawsuit, filed Aug. 15 in Los Angeles Superior Court.
