Expect the IRS to Turn the Dogs Loose

On July 27, Senators Joe Manchin (D., W.Va.) and Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.) announced a deal that will likely bring the Democrats’ tax-and-spending bill to the president’s desk. Manchin was one of the sole remaining Democrat holdouts, claiming that he could not support tax increases at a time of high inflation.

But he caved. So on August 7, the Senate passed H.R. 5376, misnamed the “Inflation Reduction Act of 2022.” The bill carries $437 billion in tax increases, greatly trimmed down from the $739 billion initially proposed.

I say the bill is misnamed because there is nothing in it that will reduce inflation. One of its key elements is to increase corporate taxes by $313 billion through a new 15 percent corporate-minimum tax. But this will only hinder investment and productivity, the very things needed to quell inflation. As I point out here, high corporate taxes cannot and will not reduce inflation.

Another key element of the bill is the provision to fund the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The bill would appropriate $80 billion in new revenue (over its usual annual appropriation of about $12 billion) to the IRS over the next ten years. Here’s how some of the new money is to be used:

$3.181 billion for taxpayer services, including pre-filing assistance and education, return filing and account services, and taxpayer-advocate services;

$4.751 billion for business-systems modernization, including updating computer systems generally and the development of call-back technology; and

$25.326 billion for operations support, including general expenses to support taxpayer services and enforcement, general administrative expenses for such things as rent, printing, postage, vehicles, etc.

The centerpiece of IRS spending would be for tax-law enforcement. The bill promises $45.638 billion for this purpose, to include enhanced audits and collection, legal and litigation support, criminal investigations, digital asset monitoring and compliance, and the general enforcement of tax laws and other financial crimes.

And while the administration has repeatedly assured us that the targets of this increased enforcement action will be only high-income earners, I have shown clearly that the targets will likely be self-employed persons, along with those who claim the benefits of the laundry-list of refundable tax credits — lower-income taxpayers.

But even if the IRS targets only high-income taxpayers, spending the lion’s share of the $80 billion on enforcement is simply bad policy.

Compare the enforcement appropriation with that of taxpayer assistance and education. Enforcement is a winner by a margin of more than 14-1. And yet, only 2 percent of total federal revenue comes through enforcement. That means 98 percent of every dollar paid to the government is paid “voluntarily,” that is, without the need of IRS intervention.

To the extent that people fail to comply with the law, the vast majority of what is deemed non-compliance is not really non-compliance at all. People do not wake up one morning and say, “How can I tick off the IRS today? I know. I’ll stop paying my taxes!” Nobody wants to get sideways with the IRS, and an overwhelming majority of citizens screw themselves into the ground to stay on top of their tax obligations.

Rather, failure to comply is generally attributable to either (1) a misunderstanding of what the law requires, or (2) the inability to comply due to some unforeseen circumstances. Examples include (but certainly aren’t limited to) catastrophic illness or injury, a failed business or marriage, addiction, or natural disaster. Over the past two years, I’ve seen countless issues directly related to the Covid pandemic.

Policy-makers at every level fail to grasp the magnitude of tax-law complexity. The tax code was changed more than 5,900 times since 2001, and that doesn’t count the many changes that occurred in 2020 and 2021. The 2018 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act constituted the most sweeping change to the tax code since the Tax Reform Act of 1988. As proof that policy-makers simply ignore this issue, consider that the 1998 Internal Revenue Service Restructuring and Reform Act required the IRS to submit an annual report to Congress on the sources of tax complexity and how it might be reduced. The IRS has issued just two such reports, and none after 2002. I take this to mean they just don’t care about the burdens the Byzantine tax code places on taxpayers.

Honest taxpayers — individuals and businesses alike — are drowning in the flood of so-called tax reform to the point where they cannot quickly and easily ascertain their legal responsibilities.

If Congress is not going to stop changing the law several times every year, the IRS has to recognize that people need help complying. The 14-1 enforcement ratio must be turned on its head. That is, the IRS should be spending vastly more resources to help people comply on the front end, rather than grinding them into powder on the back end when they don’t. Drain the Swamp: Trump FBI Raid More Proof We Must Remake a Politicized Bureaucracy

This week’s unprecedented FBI raid on former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home is just one more reason Republicans must fight harder to reform a politicized and powerful bureaucracy.

For three years, the bogus Russia-collusion conspiracy theory helped derail Trump’s presidency, but the problem wasn’t just the lies of his Democratic foes and their media cheerleaders. The willingness of FBI agents and Department of Justice officials to pursue that partisan plot demonstrated that the idea these agencies are staffed by apolitical civil servants is a myth.

Though Attorney General Merrick Garland probably ordered the banana-republic-style effort to treat a former president and likely future political foe like a criminal, the willingness of civil servants to go along with it made it possible.

The travesty demonstrates anew the importance of reforming the civil service. Laws that were intended to ensure those who hold government jobs aren’t playing politics are instead protecting a status quo in which Democrats can count on bureaucrats to aid them and sabotage Republicans.

The “deep state” is no right-wing myth. While administrations come and go, the more than 2 million people who work for the federal government are largely immovable objects who cannot be fired except for cause and, as the Obama-era IRS scandal (among other incidents) indicated, not always then either. We Have No Reason to Trust the FBI

The day before Donald Trump beat Hillary Clinton in the presidential election of 2016, The New York Times’ Paul Krugman claimed that the FBI—along with “Russian intelligence”—had “rigged the election.” Election denialism is perfectly acceptable behavior on the left. Krugman blamed the “rigged election” on “people within the F.B.I.” who, he asserted, “clearly felt that under Mr. Comey they had a free hand to indulge their political preferences,” by which he meant the investigation into Clinton’s email server. One can imagine the tenor of Krugman’s rhetoric if the investigation had been launched by the administration of Mitt Romney or George W. Bush or signed off on by AG Robert Bork.

Is it still the case that investigating a candidate for wrongdoing is “rigging” an election? Yesterday, Merrick Garland’s DOJ raided the home of a former president, and likely future presidential candidate, in a case regarding “potential mishandling of classified documents,” according to The Washington Post. Is that really it? We have long been told that “mishandling of classified documents” isn’t a serious crime.

When Clinton set up a secret private server to circumvent transparency, likely to hide favor-trading related to her now-obsolete corrupt foundation, it was a potential felony. In that illegal server, the FBI would find 100 emails containing classified information, 65 marked “Secret,” 22 marked “Top Secret,” and over 2,000 emails that would be retroactively marked classified. Many felonies. Unlike Trump, who had the power to declassify any document he wished, Hillary could not. And as numerous experts pointed out, the chances that those documents were intercepted by foreign powers were quite high. No one’s home was raided by the FBI.

Indeed, Hillary’s staff then attempted to destroy all evidence related to that secret illegal server, wiping it and literally using hammers to break phones and laptops—as Comey noted at the time, they “cleaned their devices in such a way as to preclude complete forensic recovery.” Another bunch of potential felonies. If Nancy Pelosi Cared About Confronting China She’d Do More Than Stage Political Theater

The ebb and flow of the corporate news cycle almost always distorts and distracts rather than informs or enlightens. So it was this week with the coverage of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s trip to Taiwan, which produced the intended effect of eliciting lazy puff pieces lauding her “three-decade career of challenging the Chinese government on human rights and other issues,” as the New York Times’ Carl Hulse dutifully put it.

But make no mistake: Pelosi did not go to Taiwan to stand up to China. She went for her own purposes, to shore up a narrative about her legacy as a tough American political leader who has always stood up to autocracies like communist China in defense of democracy. Remember that time she unfurled the banner in Tiananmen Square and the police yelled at her? Of course you do. Hulse and his colleagues have made sure of it.

In reality, the Taiwan trip was pure political propaganda, lapped up and regurgitated by a sycophantic press unwilling to admit the obvious fact that Pelosi, like every other establishment figure in Washington, has never been serious about standing up to China.

Indeed, Pelosi’s long political career, much like President Joe Biden’s and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s, maps almost perfectly onto China’s steady economic and military rise, especially over the past two decades. Apart from occasionally staging a little political theater, Pelosi and her fellow Democrat leaders have done nothing to slow or even impede that rise — quite the opposite, in fact.

Consider just some recent examples. During the thick of the Covid-19 pandemic, in the fall of 2020, Pelosi blocked a bipartisan House bill that would have curtailed the influence of Chinese-government-funded Confucius Institutes at universities across the country. Around the same time, her House Democrats denounced a bill that would have called out Beijing for spreading the conspiracy theory that Covid originated in a U.S. military lab, absurdly calling the bill racist and xenophobic. ‘Transphobia’ Is Good, and Should Be Official Government Policy

Fans of the grotesque don’t need to read the stories of Flannery O’Connor, or flip through art books savoring the paintings of the great Hieronymus Bosch. Everyday reality will scratch any sane person’s itch for the lurid, the twisted, the ludicrous. Sometimes the spectacle is funny, sometimes baffling, but often it’s genuinely sinister. Especially if you remember the stakes for which we’re playing, both in this life and the next.

A Tragic Farce in the Senate

Perhaps the most outrageous recent exchange in our public life took place in Senate hearings, when the pro-family patriot Sen. Josh Hawley was questioning U.C. Berkeley Professor Khiara Bridges. As The Guardian reported:

During the judiciary committee hearing, Hawley, who has previously co-sponsored a bill which would prevent transgender children from competing in sports, questioned Khiara Bridges, a professor at UC Berkeley School of Law who was invited to testify on reproductive rights.

“You’ve referred to ‘people with a capacity for pregnancy’,” he said. “Would that be women?”

Bridges replied: “Many women, cis women, have the capacity for pregnancy. Many cis women do not have the capacity for pregnancy. There are also trans men who are capable of pregnancy, as well as non-binary people who are capable of pregnancy.”

…

Hawley said: “So this isn’t really a women’s rights issue. It’s … it’s what?”

Bridges said: “We can recognise that this impacts women while also recognising that it impacts other groups, those things are not mutually exclusive, Senator Hawley.”

She added: “I want to recognise that your line of questioning is transphobic and it opens up trans people to violence by not recognizing them.”

A New Cult with its Own Inquisition

We can’t just lazily wave at Bridges’ position and point to it as madness. Of course it is, to you and me. We know with all the certainty of biological science and thousands of years of human civilization, plus the testimony of Scripture, that the divide between the sexes is real, crucially important, and tied to reproduction.

But that’s not enough. We face a new ideology that bears all the force of an evangelizing religion, backed by activist billionaires, which has captured all the high ground in our culture.

So we must think through clearly, even ruthlessly, the full implications of the dogmas taught by the Transgenderist cult, which public school teachers are preaching to our children — and Democrats are enshrining into law. (Don’t worry, Establishment Republicans will be obediently repeating the same superstition, just a few years later. They always do.)

We must follow the truth relentlessly, without flinching for fear of triggering thin-skinned activists. And we absolutely must parry the heavy rhetorical cudgel which Bridges wielded at Hawley. Namely, that some opinions may not be expressed, and must be simply censored, because airing them “opens up … people to violence.”

Let the truth be told, though the heavens fall. We must not live by lies, and cannot let the government uses its bayonets and bullets to cram lies down our throats. That’s how countries end up with gulags, as Solzhenitsyn warned us.

A Pyramid of Lies, Built on Gibberish

All that by way of background to my central argument, which I’ll lay out here in clear, inexorable steps.

1. Transgenderism is incoherent and its claims are literally meaningless. Its political demands are arbitrary and shifting precisely because it is grounded in mental confusion, willful obfuscation, and a pride-driven hatred of God’s creation. That is, of material reality, the world, and our human place in it.

2. Transgenderism demands, with the force of a powerful Oligarchy which includes social media giants and the State, that we repeat lies and force ourselves to believe them. It further demands that we strip people (real, biological women) of God-given rights they really have — in order to confer fake, made-up rights on fake, transgender women.

3. Gender dysphoria is a mental illness, period. Like anorexia and bulimia, it entails a person accepting and embracing false claims about his body, then engaging in self-destructive behavior as a result. We are naturally repulsed when we see the starved bodies of anorexics, and likewise when we see the botched, grotesque results of transgender surgery and hormones. This is natural, and good. It does not mean we intend violence toward the victims of these disorders. Nor that we fail to love them as Christians should.

4. Real love for people suffering from gender dysphoria would not entail encouraging them to mutilate their bodies and medicalize their entire lives — becoming addicted to dangerous hormones to force their mortal frames to conform (if unconvincingly) to their mental delusions. If your daughter were anorexic, the loving thing would not be to agree with her that she looks fat, even though her ribs are showing like a concentration camp victim’s.

5. Real love for children would not entail encouraging them to develop gender dysphoria, by making it fashionable, inserting inappropriate material into school lessons, or otherwise “grooming” and sexualizing them. But this is what Transgenderism demands.

Do the Research

Obviously, a whole book could be written, to unpack all these claims. And good ones have been written, such as Ryan Anderson’s When Harry Became Sally, and Abigail Shreir’s Irreversible Damage. I encourage people to read them. And also to listen to testimonies from people who carried the heavy cross of gender dysphoria, unwittingly subjected themselves to medical malpractice at the hands of today’s lobotomy doctors, and now regret it. Walt Heyer is perhaps the most eloquent among the “ex-trans” community.

But for today, I think it’s sufficient to explore just my first claim, since all the others logically follow from it. If this premise is true, so are the conclusions.

Transgenderism Is Incoherent and Its Claims Are Literally Meaningless

I already wrote a column on this topic to mark the sad “transitioning” of the gifted actress Ellen Page. Rather than re-invent the wheel, let me quote the key sections here, then add some new reflections.

Let me violate good Gnostic manners and ask a few vulgar questions. Is Page going to have her perfectly healthy breasts removed? Will Page use some crude simulacrum of male genitalia to render her lesbian “marriage” now suddenly heterosexual? Will Page dose herself with male steroids, and undergo all the health risks? I hope none of the three, for her sake.

But we know that none of these things are necessary for greedy, shameless biological males who wish to scoop up all the prizes in women’s sports. Or lurk in their locker rooms. Or leave a male prison where they’re locked up for raping women, and move to a prison full of women whom they can rape.

No, precisely because biology is irrelevant, you need do none of these things to be a “trans.” You just need to … declare it, and everyone else must honor that choice. But what are you choosing, exactly? If you’re not making dangerous, destructive efforts to mutilate your body, what are you doing? What are you identifying with, or as, and how?

If the capacity for real motherhood or fatherhood is not part of “gender” then what is? Lipstick, high heels, and a high-pitched voice on the one hand — and lumberjack shirts, work boots, and unashamed farts on the other? By “identifying” as some gender at odds with your genitals, are you simply indulging a stereotype? If so, must strangers honor that? Must we blow up women’s sports, strip women of privacy, and subject some to physical danger (like the fellow prisoners of a suddenly “female” rapist, or girls on a rugby field mowed down by a 6’ 3” “girl”)?

All so that a few mentally ill people can LARP? And we as a society have to nod along with them and agree to pretend to believe them? At this point I insist on saying two things: “No,” and “H***, no!” A society that can force us to say that Bruce Jenner is a woman and Ellen Page is a man can force us to say anything at all. Including that 2+2=5.

Imagine Instead of Sex We Were Talking About Money

Nobody asks whether a chicken, or a gorilla, “identifies” as the opposite sex. Only fallen human beings, with our big, complicated brains, come up with sophisticated delusions like gender dysphoria. Or paranoid conspiracy theories about “the Jews.” Or bizarre means of mental self-torture like Scientology.

When Transgenderists and their dupes demand that we respect the “gender identity” of a “pregnant man,” or a bearded “transwoman” rapist in prison, what are they telling us to do? They’re insisting that we must cater to false cognitions, to psychological distortions. That we must remake all of society, and change how we speak and we act, to placate people trapped in illusions — who wish to conform to external stereotypes of the opposite sex. And ruin their health, mutilate their bodies, and trample on the rights of others to accomplish that.

Imagine things were different. Visualize a world where Trans ideology applied not to something trivial like the only means of reproducing the human species, but to something really important, such as money.

So people who claim to be billionaires with perfect credit scores and vast assets in real estate and stocks can walk into banks … and demand lines of credit worth $500 million. And bankers would have to comply, or else be accused of encouraging “violence” against the Transfinancial.

People who believe that they know as much as Harvard MBAs can claim that degree on their resumes — and employers have to hire them. And so on. Any hobo who puts on an ascot is now a Rockefeller heir, and you must treat him as such or face “cancellation.” Someone’s Transfinancial identity must be respected.

Parents, if You Don’t Get a Grip on Your Kids’ Social Media, Trans Activists Will

An elementary school in Indiana must allow a 10-year-old boy who identifies as transgender to play on its all-girls softball team despite a new state law preventing males from competing on female sports teams, a judge ruled Tuesday. This is just the most recent example of how the trans movement is affecting our kids: an elementary school’s all-girls softball team. What is behind all these stories of young children gender bending? Social media could have something to do with it.

Social media and smartphones are harmful to kids. This is increasingly recognized and reported on by the media and has become a growing area of national, bipartisan concern in Congress. And parents already seem to realize that screens are addictive for kids, so they limit screen time and put boundaries in place around when and how often they can use devices. However, many parents aren’t aware of just how full of harmful content and dangerous voices many of today’s popular apps are. Time limits won’t cut it since even a small amount of time on the wrong apps can be extremely damaging.

The truth is that social media apps today are full of pornography, sexual images, and radical LGBT content directly opposed to conservative values and Christian beliefs. Kids are following and listening to complete strangers, many of them grown adults, whose voices bombard them on social media. And some of the loudest voices recently are those of transgender influencers.

LGBT activists have taken to the online world to recruit more followers, specifically seeking young people, to join their cause and become their allies. They prey on the vulnerability of children in order to convince them of the validity and normalcy of their radical, sexually perverted lifestyles. Influencers are actively working to undermine parents’ own authority over their children and to replace the loving influence of parents in children’s lives and hearts with their own “welcoming and accepting” rainbow community.

Social media companies allow influencers to peddle misinformation on the drugs and surgeries that are commonplace for transgender individuals. Influencers coach teens on how to lie to doctors and their parents in order to get these drugs or surgeries, which they promise will make them feel better. Pay Attention to the Dutch Farmer Protests Because America Is Next (VIDEO)

Americans should start paying closer attention to the ongoing farmer protests in the Netherlands, which this week transformed long swaths of Dutch highways into what looked like a post-apocalyptic warzone: roadside fires raging out of control, manure and farming detritus heaped across highways, traffic stalled for miles, and massive protests across the country in support of the farmers.

Why is the Netherlands, of all places, experiencing such unrest? Americans need to understand what’s happening over there because the ruinous climate policies that triggered these protests are precisely what President Joe Biden and the Democrats have in mind for the United States.

Specifically, Dutch farmers are protesting a government plan to cut fertilizer use and reduce livestock numbers so drastically that it will force many farms out of business. Earlier this month, farmers used tractors and trucks to block highways and entrances to food distribution centers across the country, saying their livelihood and way of life are being targeted by the government.

And they more or less are. The ruling coalition government claims its radical plan, pushed by Prime Minister Mark Rutte, who branded the protests “unacceptable,” is part of an “unavoidable transition” to improve air, land, and water quality. The goal is to reduce emissions of nitrogen oxide and ammonia, which are produced by livestock but which the government is labeling “pollutants,” by 50 percent nationwide by the year 2030.

The only way to do that, many Dutch farmers say, is to slaughter the vast majority of their livestock and shutter their farms. The government knows this and admitted as much earlier this year, saying in a statement, “The honest message … is that not all farmers can continue their business,” and that farmers have three options: “Becoming more sustainable, relocating or ending their business.”

Is the J6 Committee Trying to Get Trump Re-Elected?

Now that anonymous sources are leaking to The Washington Post that the Department of Justice is officially targeting former President Donald Trump with criminal charges, this is a good time to ask: Just how crazy are the occupants of Washington, D.C.? Do they really think they will indict, prosecute, convict, and imprison the Republican frontrunner for president in 2024 without creating a massive amount of public backlash?

For half the country, trying to take down Trump for giving a speech over a mile away from the Capitol on Jan. 6 while hardly anybody has been held accountable for the atrocious Russia collusion hoax that nearly destroyed his presidency will be nothing less than total confirmation of a two-tiered and irreparably corrupt justice system and could permanently tear the nation in two.

This may come as a shocker to Washington, but Congress’s J6 obsession is not high on Americans’ list of critical issues. Polls show the American people’s top concerns are skyrocketing inflation and economic uncertainty, not what happened on Jan. 6. To say that the American government and the American people are not speaking the same language right now is an understatement. . .

Had Attorney General Merrick Garland felt that Trump had potentially committed a crime before leaving office, he should have pursued an investigation free from the overtly political atmosphere created by Congress’s J6 committee hearings. Whatever Nancy Pelosi’s Jan. 6 Committee is, it has not been a courtroom pursuing justice. Though witnesses are brought before the committee to “confess,” as Rep. The American constitutional republic, built upon individual rights and a thriving Middle Class, has historically been the single greatest obstacle to totalitarianism, whether it be represented by monarchists, Nazis, communists or its most recent manifestation, the World Economic Forum.

Today, the totalitarians are closer to their goal than ever because the United States has become a de facto one-party state composed of a coalition of Democrat and Republican politicians, who themselves are owned by and do the bidding of anti-American interests dedicated to creating a global governance system of masters and slaves.

Make no mistake. There are no RINOs. There are only Democrats, who have run as Republicans because they could not have gained power in conservative states, but have, nevertheless, consistently betrayed their voters on critical issues.

When blatant and outrageous lies told by the Democrat-Republican tyrannical junta are no longer sufficient to soothe the electorate into complacency, such a government must begin to curtail freedom and oppress the people in order to remain in power.

Today, ordinary Americans are faced with a hopelessly corrupt federal government, which uses a two-tier justice system and a compliant media to suppress and punish its political opponents.

It is a government that cannot be reformed through the electoral process because election integrity cannot be assured.

Layered on top of rampant government corruption are a series of deliberately destructive policies: open borders; accelerating inflation, unsustainable debt, loss of energy independence, food shortages, politically-motivated and medically-dangerous public health mandates; sexual grooming of children; the racially divisive promotion of critical race theory, etc.

The intent is to create chaos and despair, which are essential elements for radical political changes seen both in the Russian Communist Revolution and the rise of Nazi Germany.

It is as if the Democrat-Republican tyrannical junta is deliberately provoking rebellion in order to complete its totalitarian destruction of our constitutional republic through a massive nationwide crackdown using a now woke, politically-reliable U.S. military willing to fire on the American people.

In fact, the present political environment, that is, the separation between the rulers and the ruled, does bear comparison to the events leading up to the American Revolution.

The efficiency and effectiveness of government are directly dependent upon the trustworthiness of government officials as representatives and executors of the views and desires of the people.

In other words, whenever the interests of government officials divert from or are in conflict with those of the people, tyranny ensues, which we are now experiencing.

The erosion of the Constitution and the theft of our Constitutional rights have been occurring incrementally and quietly over a long period of time.

With the 2008 election of Barack Obama, a coffee house communist, those efforts accelerated and continue, as he is the true power behind the mentally incapable and illegitimate Joe Biden.

Yes, continue to vote, but do not expect the predicted Republican “red wave” in the November 2022 mid-term elections to change the status quo in Washington, D.C.

Only a bottom-up political insurgency consisting of widespread spoken truth and nationwide non-compliance with unconstitutional policies will help restore our constitutional republic.

The Presidency of Donald Trump and, therefore, the will of the American people was subverted and the 2020 election was sabotaged under the direction of the Democrat-Republican tyrannical junta.

The U.S. national security apparatus, represented by the Department of Justice, the FBI, the Department of Homeland Security, the intelligence agencies and the U.S. military, has been weaponized against the American people.

It was used to instigate the so-called “January 6th insurrection,” thereby, facilitating the arrest and prosecution of the Biden regime’s political opponents.

Like a house divided against itself cannot stand, a government separated from the people cannot stand.

To paraphrase President John F. Kennedy – if peaceful change is made impossible, violent revolution is made inevitable.
