Unabomber’s Death a Suicide, Sources Say

Ted Kaczynski, the man more commonly known as the “Unabomber,” died Saturday by suicide, sources say.

Four sources familiar with the matter revealed to the Associated Press 81-year-old Kaczynski, who was suffering from late-stage cancer, died by his own hand in his North Carolina federal prison cell just after midnight Saturday. Though emergency personnel successfully revived the notorious criminal after performing CPR, Kaczynski died after being transported to a local hospital, the sources — who were not authorized to speak publicly about Kaczynski’s death — told the AP.

Kazynski, a self-proclaimed environmentalist, had been serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole since his arrest and conviction in 1996. Between 1978 and 1995, Kaczynski mailed or hand delivered a series of bombs which ultimately killed three Americans and injured nearly two dozen more. His campaign of terror earned him the moniker, “The Unabomber,” as authorities worked for nearly two decades to bring him to justice. (Read more from “Unabomber’s Death a Suicide, Sources Say” HERE)

Scientists May Have Finally Figured Out Why Hair Turns Gray — And How to Stop It

Researchers at NYU have unlocked fresh evidence as to why human hair loses its natural color over time — which could help prevent people from graying.

The new study, conducted using mice and published in Nature, a peer-reviewed journal, closely examined the melanocyte stem cells known to control hair color.

Earlier in life, these cells can be remarkably dynamic, but with age, as hair is lost and regrown, the McSCs tend to slow down, getting trapped in what’s known as the hair follicle bulge, meaning they don’t get a chance to finish the job they were created to do.

Finding a way to get them moving again, which appears to be entirely possible, could mean the end of gray hair — not just in mice, but in people too, according to the team at NYU’s Grossman School of Medicine.

“[This] adds to our basic understanding of how melanocyte stem cells work to color hair,” said study lead Qi Sun, PhD, a postdoctoral fellow at NYU Langone Health. “The newfound mechanisms raise the possibility that the same fixed positioning of melanocyte stem cells may exist in humans.” (Read more from “Scientists May Have Finally Figured Out Why Hair Turns Gray — And How to Stop It” HERE)

Law Enforcement Baffled by String of Cows Found Dead with Tongues Cut Out

Law enforcement officials in Texas are baffled by a string of strange cattle mutilations in recent weeks.

The Madison County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday that at least six cows had been found dead on the side of the road along Highway OSR (Old San Antonio Road) in central Texas. The cows were all found with their tongues cut out; two others had their genitals removed as well. Even more puzzling, the cuts were made with surgical precision and left no blood.

“Ranchers advised a 6-year-old longhorn-cross cow had been found lying on her side, deceased, and mutilated on their ranch,” the Madison County Sheriff’s Office wrote on its Facebook page Wednesday. “A straight, clean cut, with apparent precision, had been made to remove the hide around the cow’s mouth on one side, leaving the meat under the removed hide untouched. The tongue was also completely removed from the body with no blood spill. It was noted there were no signs of struggle and the grass around the cow was undisturbed. No footprints or tire tracks were noted in the area. Ranchers also reported no predators or birds would scavenge the remains of the cow, leaving it to decay untouched for several weeks.”

“While looking into the longhorn-cross’ death, five other similar occurrences involving four adult cows and one yearling were reported along the area of OSR running into Brazos County as well as Robertson County,” the post continued. “Each incident occurred in different locations, pastures, and herds. The other cows were found in the same condition, lying on one side with the exposed side of their face cut along the jaw line and the tongue, once again, completely removed. On two of the five cows, a circular cut was made removing the anus and the external genitalia. This circular cut was made with the same precision as the cuts noted around the jaw lines of each cow. Just like the first, there were no signs of struggle or disturbance in the grass, no blood spill, and no noticeable tracks. No predators or birds would scavenge the remains for several weeks after death. The cause of death of all six cows remains unknown.” (Read more from “Law Enforcement Baffled by String of Cows Found Dead with Tongues Cut Out” HERE)

14 Million Cases of Type 2 Diabetes Linked to These Foods, Study Says

An estimated 14 million cases of type 2 diabetes were caused by a poor diet, a recent study published in Nature Medicine found.

Diets that lacked whole grains or had too much refined rice, wheat or processed meats were linked to the disease.

Those that included overconsumption of fruit juice or insufficient amounts of non-starchy vegetables, nuts or seeds also had some impact on diagnoses, though not as much. . .

“Our study suggests poor carbohydrate quality is a leading driver of diet-attributable type 2 diabetes globally, and with important variation by nation and over time,” said senior author Dariush Mozaffarian. . .

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institutes of Health alerted the public that the number of young Americans with type 2 diabetes is projected to skyrocket nearly 700% by 2060 if current upward trends continue unchecked. Australian Company Unveils Lab-Grown Meatball Made From Woolly Mammoth

A producer of lab-grown meat unveiled an ancient appetizer that’s perfect for your Paleo diet.

An Australian synthetic meat producer called Vow unveiled a meatball made from the genetic material of the woolly mammoth on Tuesday. The meatball was created using proteins synthesized from the mammoth genome, and is part of the company’s mission to fight climate change using lab-grown meat. The company will unveil the creation at the NEMO science museum in Amsterdam Tuesday evening.

The mammoth meatball was created with the help of Ernst Wolvetang, a researcher at the Australian Institute for Bioengineering at the University of Queensland. Wolvetang synthesized mammoth muscle tissue using a DNA sequence for myoglobin, the protein responsible for the pigment and flavor of red meat. He then filled in a few gaps in the genetic material using DNA from the African elephant, a close relative of mammoths. The DNA was then implanted in myoblasts — the precursors to muscle cells— from a sheep. It was then replicated into about 20 billion cells, enough to produce 400 grams of mammoth meat.

“It was ridiculously easy and fast,” Wolvetang told The Guardian. “We did this in a couple of weeks.” Wolvetang added that the original goal of the project was to create a chicken nugget out of meat from the Dodo bird, but the necessary DNA sequences do not exist.

But nobody has tasted the mammoth meatball, and it’s very likely that nobody will. “We haven’t seen this protein for thousands of years,” Wolvetang said. “So we have no idea how our immune system would react when we eat it. But if we did it again, we could certainly do it in a way that would make it more palatable to regulatory bodies.” (Read more from “Australian Company Unveils Lab-Grown Meatball Made From Woolly Mammoth” HERE)

States Cut off Salmon Fishing Season Because of ‘Climate Disruption’

The National Marine Fisheries Service canceled the 2023 ocean salmon season in California and Oregon between March 10, 2023, and May 15, 2024.

A statement from California Department of Fish and Wildlife noted that there would be no “commercial or ocean salmon sport fishing off California until April 2024.” The statement cited data suggests near-record low numbers for California’s Chinook ocean salmon stocks in 2023 caused by “climate disruption.”

“The main factor in making their determination is salmon returns,” one department spokesperson told Fox Weather. “These fish are returning to their home rivers from birth three years ago, following their voyage out to the ocean. Three years ago, we were dealing with intense drought that dried up rivers as well as climate disruption.”

Study: Here’s How You Can Reduce Alzheimer’s Risk

A new study has shown that people can significantly reduce their risk of Alzheimer’s and dementia by making healthier choices in the kitchen.

By following either Mediterranean or brain-focused Mediterranean-DASH Diet Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay (MIND) diets, people showed fewer physical signs of Alzheimer’s, CNN reported Wednesday. Further, the study showed that those who followed either diet had lowered their odds by almost 40% of accumulating enough plaques and tangles in brain tissue to be diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, the outlet reported.

The MIND diet has already been touted for years as the anti-memory loss diet. In a study conducted in 2015, MIND diet researchers monitored a group of older adults for up to 10 years from the Rush Memory and Aging Project (MAP) with annual dietary questionnaires.

“Researchers found a 53% lower rate of Alzheimer’s disease for those with the highest MIND scores. Even those participants who had moderate MIND scores showed a 35% lower rate compared with those with the lowest MIND scores,” the study showed.

This new research, however, shows that even small changes, can potentially have big effects. (Read more from “Study: Here’s How You Can Reduce Alzheimer’s Risk” HERE)

Giant Jurassic-Era Insect Rediscovered Outside Walmart

A giant Jurassic-era insect missing from eastern North America for at least half a century has been spotted clinging to the side of a Walmart big box in Arkansas.

The identification of the giant lacewing – Polystoechotes punctata – in an urban area of Fayetteville, Arkansas, sent scientists into raptures. The discovery of a species that was abundant in the age of the dinosaurs but which was thought to have disappeared from large swaths of North America has stoked speculation that there may be entire populations tucked away in remote parts of the Ozark mountains.

The giant lacewing was found by Michael Skvarla, director of Penn State’s insect identification lab. In a report on the university’s website this week, he explained that he made the discovery in 2012, when he was a doctoral student at the University of Arkansas.

“I remember it vividly, because I was walking into Walmart to get milk and I saw this huge insect on the side of the building,” Skvarla said.

“I thought it looked interesting, so I put it in my hand and did the rest of my shopping with it between my fingers. I got home, mounted it, and promptly forgot about it for almost a decade.” (Read more from “Giant Jurassic-Era Insect Rediscovered Outside Walmart” HERE)

Top Low-Calorie Sugar Sub Linked to Higher Heart Attack, Stroke Risk: Study

Cutting calories could cut life short for those consuming this alternative sweetener.

Erythritol, a common sugar substitute used to sweeten low-calorie food and drinks, has been linked to higher rates of heart attacks and strokes, according to a study by Cleveland Clinic doctors. The study, published in Nature Medicine, suggests that the substance puts people at risk by activating blood platelets to readily form potentially deadly clots.

The naturally occurring compound, created by fermenting corn, is 70% as sweet as sugar with none of the calories — and the sweetener of choice for popular brands, including Monster Energy drinks, Halo Top ice cream, and Quest protein bars.

“Our study shows that when participants consumed an artificially sweetened beverage with an amount of erythritol found in many processed foods, markedly elevated levels in the blood are observed for days — levels well above those observed to enhance clotting risks,” said Dr. Stanley Hazen, chairman of the clinic’s Department of Cardiovascular & Metabolic Sciences. Scientists Unearth Giant Fish That Likely Ate Our Human Ancestors

A study published Wednesday introduced us to a new species of giant fish that may have eaten our human ancestors.

The study, published in PLOS One, describes a 350-million-year-old enormous fish that reigned in our oceans long before the dinosaurs. The creature has distinct, deadly fangs that allowed it to hunt in river waterways in the ancient supercontinent Gondwana. Its remains were found in a fossil assemblage near Makhanda/Grahamstown, South Africa.

At up to 9-feet in length, it is the largest boney fish on record from the time period (Late Devonian) and is regarded as predatory. These features and behaviors prompted researchers to name it Hyneria udlezinye, or “one who eats others.”
