US truck driver misses exit, faces 35 years in Mexican jail

A Dallas-based truck driver is in prison in Mexico and facing a possible 35-year sentence because he missed his exit and had no way of turning around without crossing the border.

Jabin Bogan was making deliveries in El Paso before heading on to Arizona when he missed his exit and found himself stuck on the highway leading into Mexico. This is an easy and common mistake to make on the confusing highways of the El Paso area, but it can be a costly one, as Bogan has discovered.

Near the border he says he “asked a cop” how to turn around and was told he would have to continue on a couple of miles to an exit. The details of that part of the story are murky, as U.S. authorities say they have no record of a truck driver making such an inquiry of border agents. They say that had Bogan asked at the U.S. checkpoint, they would have stopped traffic to allow him to make a U-turn on the highway. Instead Bogan crossed the border and was stopped by Mexican authorities who searched the truck and found over a quarter of a million rounds of rifle ammunition.

Headlines in Mexico and the U.S. announced the largest detection and seizure of illegal ammunition in recent memory and strongly suggested that the shipment was destined for Mexican drug cartels. That assertion was quickly denied by both Bogan’s boss and the ammunition dealer in Phoenix, who had paid $100,000 for the shipment.

Dennis Mekenye, operations manager for Demco Freight, says the truck was equipped with a GPS tracker and when he saw it was in Mexico, he called Bogan’s cell phone. The driver told him about the missed exit and that Mexican authorities were searching the truck. Shortly thereafter, Bogan was arrested.

Liberal Senate candidate Warren claimed minority status to get invited to luncheons?

Honesty. Integrity. Character. These are the words that spring to mind when you think of Massachusetts liberal and Senate hopeful Elizabeth Warren, right? The woman who helped design TARP and was put in charge of reforming the financial system by President Obama would never do anything unethical. Of course not…unless claiming for over ten years that she was a minority because someone in her family told her that she was 1/32 Native American suddenly has become unethical. There is no way that such a claim could ever have an impact on her career when she was teaching at Harvard.

Well….  Maybe…. A little….

“The discovery of a great-great-great-grandmother does raise the question of when it becomes unseemly, if not outright deceptive, for someone to claim minority status – especially in a profession where ethnic preferences in hiring and promotions are routinely observed,” wrote blogger Vincent Carroll (via CSM).

Christian Science Monitor explained:

Warren’s campaign released statements from officials at the universities where she has worked, stating that her purported minority status had nothing to do with decisions to hire her. Those institutions are the University of Texas, University of Pennsylvania, the University of Houston Law Center, and most recently Harvard Law School.

Ignoring GSA fiasco in Vegas, NOAA wants to hire magician for conference

You don’t need a mind reader to know that hiring a magician for your government conference may not be a great idea right now.

But that’s what NOAA had planned before it pulled an advertisement for a speaker on the “magic of change” for an upcoming confab in Silver Spring, Md.

The agency wanted a motivational speaker to create “a unique model of translating magic and [principles] of the psychology of magic, magic tools, techniques, and experiences into a method of teaching leadership,” according to the ad, which appeared Tuesday.

NOAA took down the ad, however, after media reports surfaced Thursday.

The agency “has referred the solicitation to the General Counsel and NOAA’s Chief of Resources, Operations and Management to review the statement of work and the process surrounding the solicitation,” NOAA spokesman Scott Smullen emailed POLITICO.

Is the Postal Service Doomed?

If you ran a business with $25 billion in losses over the last five years, $20 billion in annual losses projected in the coming years, and 80 percent of its locations losing money, do you think that your company would stay afloat? Should it be rescued with a bailout from its customers? Or should it change its business model, eliminate expenses, and innovate to be competitive in the marketplace? These are the questions facing Congress as it considers what to do about the ever-struggling United States Postal Service (USPS).

The USPS is indeed at a crisis point. Barring an intervention from Congress by May 15, USPS plans to  start closing as many as 3,700 post offices. Those numbers might sound jarring, but in reality the post office closures (not including the processing centers) only save $200 million under USPS’s estimates, and only 4,500 employees would be “affected” — though many of them would be reassigned rather than let go. It’s only a small part of what’s needed to save the USPS.

But even the small changes being proposed are kicking up a firestorm of opposition. Consider the post office in Hope, Minnesota. It sees about eight customers a day, requiring some seven minutes of service. The USPS wanted to close the facility and offer service to the 90 residents of Hope at the Ellendale post office, just 10 minutes away. Still, the closure was actively opposed, ending with an appeal to the Postal Regulatory Commission before the move was recently cleared.

Some politicians in Washington, of course, are trying to swoop in to the rescue in defense of this inefficient American institution. The Senate last week approved a measure (S. 1789) to prevent these changes until the USPS establishes new service standards for mail, effectively delaying action for six months.

Now it’s up to the House to take action, and the Senate’s plan faces fierce opposition. Representative Darrell Issa (R-CA), chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, says the measure is nothing more than politicians trying to save post offices in their back yards. “Rather than letting an objective and independent process continue on, senators would inject parochial politics into the postmaster general’s decision making,” Issa said.

Lesson in Arrogance of Power: John Edwards’ betrayed wife ‘tore off bra’ in fit of rage over affair

Former US presidential candidate John Edwards’ wife ripped off her shirt and bra in a confrontation with her husband over his affair, a court has heard.

Breast cancer sufferer Elizabeth Edwards also collapsed during the fight in an airport car park, a witness said.

Mr Edwards’ daughter left the court in tears during the latest evidence in her father’s campaign finance trial.

He denies using donations to hide a pregnant mistress, and faces up to 30 years in jail if convicted.

He could also be hit with $1.5m (£930,000) in fines. Mr Edwards has pleaded not guilty to six counts of campaign finance law violations.

College student forced to drink his own urine by DEA insanity, sues for $20 million

The California student who was forgotten about by agents and left alone in a holding cell for five days without food or water filed a $20 million claim Wednesday against federal drug officials.

Attorney Eugene Iredale sent the demand notice on behalf of UC San Diego senior Daniel Chong, 23, to the Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) general counsel, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

“The deprivation of food and water for four and one-half days while the person is handcuffed the entire time constitutes torture under both international and domestic law,” the claim said.

Chong has said he was eventually forced to drink his own urine to survive after being detained and locked in the five-by-10-foot windowless cell after a drug raid on April 21.

He was discovered April 25 and rushed to the hospital, where he spent five days being treated for a perforated lung, possible kidney failure and other illnesses.

Romney’s openly gay adviser, kept “under wraps because of…attacks on his homosexuality”, resigns

Richard Grenell, an openly gay foreign policy spokesman for GOP presumptive presidential nominee Mitt Romney, resigned Tuesday over what he called “the hyper-partisan discussion of personal issues that sometimes comes from a presidential campaign.”

“While I welcomed the challenge to confront President Obama’s foreign policy failures and weak leadership on the world stage, my ability to speak clearly and forcefully on the issues has been greatly diminished,” Grenell said in a resignation statement in a statement obtained by the Washington Post.

Grenell’s hiring was widely criticized by those both on the left and right and he also came under fire for a number of Twitter posting he deleted poking fun at the physical appearances of many women politicians and pundits, including Callista Gingrich and Rachel Maddow.

But it was Grenell’s sexual orientation that he said ultimately led to his exit from the campaign. Grenell’s hiring earlier was announced April 19 but he had yet to make any public remarks or on-the-record comments on foreign policy issues for the campaign, even during the days marking the one-year anniversary of the Osama bin Laden raid.

Many pundits found this fact puzzling considering the Osama raid was a major international incident on which Grenell could have commented officially. Some posited the campaign hired Grenell to fill a diversity quota and they were keeping him under wraps because of conservative and liberal attacks on his homosexuality. Other said he was hired in April but officially wouldn’t begin his tenure as spokesman until May 1.

Paul & Gingrich: the only candidates demanding that Jerusalem be recognized as Israel’s Capital

It is easy to (falsely) accuse Ron Paul of anti-Semitism because of his daily rants on the floor of Congress about the war on Iraq being fostered by Jewish lobbyists in America. Widespread suggestions make the connection and the so-called neocon movement clearly advanced the project. Paul opposes foreign aid to everyone in general and to Israel in particular. But Israel is not a product of the initiatives or the imagination of American or Israeli Jewish lobbyists and to assume it is as is widespread today in American academia and globalist pop culture is itself anti-Semitic and virulently nihilistic. And these positions have tragically been fostered and nurtured by the American state department under Secretary Clinton and President Barack Obama. But you won’t find that in Ron Paul. Rising political forces in Israel like Moshe Feiglin’s “Jewish leadership” faction have long called to a breaking free from American aid to Israel much as Paul does.

Business Insider recently interviewed Dr. Paul claiming he “shocks campaign staff with new position on Israel.” When Paul was asked whether he would sign an Executive Order to move the U.S. Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, a major policy objective for Israeli hardliners and many leaders in the Christian Right, he said, “The real issue here is not what America wants, but what does Israel want. If Israel wants their capital to be Jerusalem, then the United States should honor that. How would we like it if some other nation said ‘We decided to recognize New York City as your capital instead, so we will build our embassy there?'”

From the Business Insider essay: “Ironically, Paul and Newt Gingrich are now the only presidential candidates who have said that they are in favor of recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and moving the U.S. Embassy there. President Barack Obama has postponed moving the Embassy. Romney ‘would like to see the U.S. Embassy eventually moved to Jerusalem,’ campaign spokesman Andrea Saul said in a statement emailed to Business Insider.”

Gambler in Chief Ignores Reality

Lies are how the left operates, it’s what they do (in addition to blaming others for, well, just about everything).

The lie that the left pushes is that green energy is viable, and it’s worth (wasting) your money to “invest in”, despite no proven  business model or that it can even come close to replacing the energy resources all industrialized nations use. I’m all for investing in alternative energy. Just not with taxpayer money on the scale we’ve recently seen (nor on failed business models).

You only have to look at the price at the gas pump to know they’re lying to you. While gas hovers at $4.00 a gallon (up from about $1.85 when Obama took office), the Administration is wasting taxpayer money (aka “investing”) in green energy boondoggles such as algae and losing endeavors such Solyndra Ener1 (renewable energy storage battery technology), and oh, 11 other Solyndra’s (to the tune of $6.5 billion in taxpayer loans).

And if you’re not on board with the green-doggle express, you’re a “flat-earther”.

The reality is that the United States sits on the largest fossil fuel reserves in the world. Not to mention the forgotten promise of nuclear energy, the original alternative to coal and oil. Another sobering reality is that President Obama is in the process of shutting down an entire industry – coal – that provides 45% of our energy needs ! Of course, he told us he would do so back in 2008. Rich people will grumble while the vast majority will have additional pressure on their heat pump bills to go along with the gas pump pain.

The left likes it when the price at the gas pump rises (although it doesn’t bother the Energy Secretary Steven Chu – he doesn’t own a car, but his wife owns a BMW); they just feign impotence at the price of a barrel of oil and fawn at the algae and wind farms, all done while mouthing “I feel your pain.”

Despite the pain-in-the-pump, President Obama wants to “double-down on investments in clean energy technologies”.  “Double-down” is an interesting way of putting it, as any gambler knows. I just don’t want the gambler-in-chief wasting more money on failed enterprises that can’t make a buck on technology that promises so much, but delivers so little. So he wants to shift $4 billion in oil and natural gas subsidies away from companies that actually make a profit to companies who will likely follow Solyndra and others down the black hole of failed enterprises.

And to prove my point, the Democrats # 1 attack dog (Debbie Wasserman-Schultz) was pounding the podium (with lies) after the American Energy Alliance announced plans to air an ad titled “Nine Dollar Gas”. One can only hope that DWS will be seen frequently by the voting public in the coming months.

National security is the President’s # 1 responsibility, and our energy independence is a key factor. Our nation’s economy is strangled by the redistributor-in-chief as he gambles with your money on losing propositions whose only beneficiaries are his cronies.
