US flag desecrated with Obama’s image stirring outrage against Florida Democrats

An American flag with President Obama’s image in place of the stars flew over a Florida county’s Democrat headquarters long enough to enrage local veterans who called the altered banner “a disgrace.”

Lake County Democratic Party officials took down the flag, which flew just below a standard Old Glory on the flagpole outside headquarters in Tavares following complaints by local veterans. But merely taking it down wasn’t enough for several local veterans, who said they fought for the flag Betsy Ross made famous, not one with a politician on it.

“It’s absolutely disrespectful,” Jim Bradford, a 71-year-old veteran who participated in the Bay of Pigs Invasion told FoxNews.com. “It’s totally ridiculous. To put somebody’s picture there, to me, it’s a disgrace to do that.”

Bradford, an organizer with the Veterans Memorial at Fountain Park in Leesburg, Fla., snapped photos of the flag and distributed them to fellow veterans and friends. By late afternoon, he and several other veterans delivered a copy of the federal flag code to Nancy Hurlbert, chairwoman of the Lake County Democratic Party.

“We read that to her, but she would not accept that,” Bradford said. “The discussion finally got a little bit heated.”

Roll-out of Breitbart videos begins: Obama praises radical academic tied to Jeremiah Wright

The first images from a stash that the late Andrew Breitbart promised to use to “vet” Barack Obama during the 2012 presidential race appeared today.

Ben Smith of Buzzfeed announced on Twitter that the film was released by video researcher Andrew Kaczynski, but Breitbart’s Big Government.com site immediately noted that it has been “edited” and that more video would be coming within hours.

On the video, Obama is speaking to a rally on behalf of a professor.

He praises the teacher: “The black law students organized an orientation … one of the persons who spoke was Professor Bell. …. I remember him sauntering up to the front and not giving us a lecture but engaging us in a conversation,” Obama says.

According to Joel Pollak’s report at Breitbart.com, “The video, which Kaczynski says was ‘licensed from a Boston television station,’ shows a young Barack Obama leading a protest at Harvard Law School on behalf of Prof. Derrick Bell, a radical academic tied to Jeremiah Wright – about whom we will be releasing significant information in the coming hours.”

Koch brothers attempting hostile takeover of Cato Institute?

No doubt you have read about the lawsuit that Charles and David Koch have filed to give themselves majority control of Cato’s long-dormant shareholder arrangement and therefore control over the Board of Directors, which has heretofore run the Institute for 35 years with no input from the shareholders. Already the Koch forces have managed to put 7 people on the Board.

For now, our friends should know this: We believe this effort is a direct threat to the independence, nonpartisanship, and libertarianism of the Cato Institute. Koch control would destroy 35 years of hard work by our Board, officers, staff, and donors to build the Cato Institute’s brand and reputation. We intend to fight it. And we intend to win and to preserve our independence.

To read more go to SaveCato. And “like” the Facebook page Save the Cato Institute.

There are many links at those sites. But you might be especially interested in Tuesday’s New York Times story. And Steve Chapman’s short item at the Chicago Tribune.

This misguided attempt at corporate control of an independent, nonpartisan think tank is bad for the Cato Institute and bad for the libertarian movement. We hope that everyone will come to see that, soon, before any more damage is done.

Bill Kristol: “It ain’t over”

Out here, in the dark quiet of the winter suburban night, it’s startling to hear the harsh sounds piercing through the cold air from the direction of Washington, D.C. It takes a while to recognize the sound as the gnashing of thousands of D.C. GOP power brokers’ teeth. It was supposed to be over tonight!!! What the hell are the voters doing?!?
Rick Santorum

What they’re doing is, on the one hand, casting more votes for Mitt Romney than for anyone else. But what they’re also doing, on the other hand, is denying Romney enough votes to win decisively and end the race.

So it’s not over.

And here’s why D.C. GOP teeth are gnashing so fiercely and loudly: It won’t be over for a while.

Mitt Romney of course remains the clear favorite. But the schedule over the next few weeks does him few favors. There are 14 primaries and caucuses in the next month, including Kansas on March 10, Alabama, Hawaii, and Mississippi on March 13, Missouri on March 17, Illinois on March 20, Louisiana on March 24, and Maryland and Wisconsin on April 3. Rick Santorum will probably hold his own—maybe more than hold his own—against Romney in these contests. (Furthermore, if Santorum can win Alabama and Mississippi next week, Gingrich may either get out or become fairly irrelevant, which would presumably help Santorum.)

Obama may give up classified data on US missile shield to Russia’s Putin

The Obama administration disclosed on Tuesday that it is considering sharing some classified U.S. data as part of an effort to allay Russian concerns about a controversial antimissile shield.

The administration is continuing negotiations begun under former President George W. Bush on a defense technical cooperation agreement with Moscow that could include limited classified data, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense Brad Roberts told a House of Representatives’ Armed Services subcommittee.

He gave no details on the sort of data that might be shared under such an agreement.

Russia strongly opposes the U.S.-engineered bulwark being built in and around Europe against ballistic missiles that could be fired by countries like Iran.

Moscow fears that such a shield could grow strong enough over time to undermine Moscow’s own nuclear deterrent force and has threatened to deploy missiles of its own as a counter.

Romney: a candidate “so inevitable and so weak at the same time”

In a sketch last weekend following Mitt Romney’s win in Michigan, “Saturday Night Live” had its Romney character boast that it was another instance of voters saying of him, “Eh, I guess.”

“Eh, I guess” looks to be the motto he’ll have to try to ride to the nomination. It was an “eh” night for Romney, although he avoided catastrophe by pulling out a razor-thin win in Ohio where he was trailing most of the night.

Otherwise, he won one state where he used to be governor (Massachusetts), a small Northeastern state (Vermont), an essentially uncontested Southern state (Virginia),  a heavily Mormon state out West (Idaho) and Alaska. In Virginia, he couldn’t get to 60 percent against just Ron Paul. Rarely has a candidate seemed so inevitable and so weak at the same time.

Romney has always been the default candidate, dependent on discrediting the other candidates or having them discredit themselves before Republican voters turn to him. His two biggest initial threats, Rick Perry and Newt Gingrich, were highly vulnerable and either disappeared or rapidly diminished. Santorum looked like he was headed for the same fate, but has proven more resilient.

His performance has been amazing given Romney’s advantages. Romney is the only candidate who has bothered to or been capable of running a traditional presidential campaign. He built an organization, raised money, ran an opposition research shop, and garnered endorsements. He has relied on this machinery to see him through what has turned out to be more of a grind than he ever expected.

German Press: Iran detonated a nuclear weapon in North Korea

Germany’s Die Welt newspaper reported Sunday that Iran held at least one nuclear weapons test in North Korea in 2010.

The paper’s report is based on “Western intelligence agencies sources,” and says that the test, in fact, refutes US intelligence assessments suggesting there is no “hard evidence” that Iran is building nuclear weapons.

The International Atomic Energy Agency has recently declared that its nuclear negotiations with Iran have failed.

The statement followed Tehran’s decision the bar IAEA inspectors from what is believed to be key military sites in the Islamic Republic.

Iran vehemently claims that its nuclear program is meant to serve civil, peaceful purposes only.

Center for Military Readiness blasts Marine Corps’ description of two males embracing & kissing as “typical”

A Marine official’s description of a photograph of two males hugging and kissing at a base in Hawaii as “typical” is making the United States military look ridiculous, charges the head of the Center for Military Readiness, which argues for making the military more of a fighting force and less a social experiment.

The image has gotten widespread attention on the Internet. Posted on a “gay Marine” social networking page, it shows Dalan Wells and Brand Morgan. Their reunion after Morgan returned from assignment is what it is, according to Elaine Donnelly of the Center for Military Readiness.

But she said the Marine Corps description that it is “typical” goes too far.

The statement, which was attributed to a Marine Corps Base Hawaii spokeswoman, was, “It’s your typical homecoming photo.”

“This demonstrates just how fragile the culture of the military is,” Donnelly told WND. “Here she is speaking officially for the Marine Corps. Her statement reflects a cultural reversal.”
