Jamie Boling and her husband, Joseph, know that providing for a military family can be trying — waiting for orders, often living on a single income, and, in especially tough cases, supporting a spouse wounded in the line of duty.

Around the holidays, the challenges — especially the financial ones — can tax families already struggling to make ends meet.

The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, a nonprofit D.C.-based think tank, estimates that as many as 340,000 veterans rely on federal or state rental assistance. About 900,000 veterans live on food stamps, and an additional 5,000 active-duty service members are food stamp recipients.

The nonprofit groups Operation Homefront and Fisher House Foundation stepped in Monday to provide the Bolings and about 300 other military families in the D.C. area with grocery bags filled with the fixings for a holiday meal.

“My husband medically retired in October, and it’s a big transition to go from active duty to medical retirement,” said Mrs. Boling, 29, of Gaithersburg. “It gets hard around this time of year. My husband is making about 30 percent of what he used to be making. You have to start stretching dollars. This literally puts food on the table.”

Four days before the legal deadline, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) said she had not yet signed up for Obamacare, but was still mulling over the plans and what might work best for her family. As of Dec. 9, the deadline for members of Congress, Wasserman’s office had not responded to CNSNews.com’s inquiry on whether the lawmaker had enrolled.

In a CNN interview on Dec. 5, host Wolf Blitzer asked Rep. Wasserman Schultz, “Because you’re a member of Congress, you have to go to the healthcare.gov website. Have you done that already?”

The congresswoman said, “Yes, I’m in the middle of comparing plans for my own family right now.”

Blitzer then asked, “Why are you waiting so long? It started October 1st. It’s December.”

Wasserman Schultz said, “I’m a little busy, so—”

Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas), chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, in an appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union” with Candy Crowley, said that while drones are good for going after high value targets, “drones alone are not going to kill an ideology.”

“I think drones are a good tool to go after high value targets. I think good intelligence, special forces. I don’t think occupying countries is really the way to go. I do think that the smart ways to do it, but the problem is drones alone are not going to kill an ideology,” McCaul said.

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezoz said his company has been working on a secret project to use drones to deliver products to customers in 30 minutes. Amazon “Prime Air” will be available to customers in four to five years, he told CBS’ Charlie Rose.

The American flag that flies over the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office will be raised high tonight despite an order by President Barack Obama that flags across the country be lowered to half-staff to honor the death of iconic South African leader Nelson Mandela.

Sheriff Rick Clark told The Greenville News that he has ordered the flag be raised at the end of today because he said the honor of lowering flags to half-staff should be reserved for Americans.

“The flag at half-staff is for Americans’ ultimate sacrifice for our country,” Clark said. “We should never stray away from that.”

The flag has flown at half-staff and will continue to during daylight hours today in honor of a Lowcountry law enforcement officer who was killed and in honor of Pearl Harbor Day, Clark said.

However, come tonight, the flag will be raised, he said.

In an interview with MSNBC’s Chris Matthews on Thursday, President Barack Obama dismissed the notion that the IRS ever targeted pro-life groups or conservatives. The IRS scandal flared this summer as pro-life groups learned they had been targeted and seen their applications for nonprofit status delayed.

The IRS has been found to be targeting pro-life and conservative groups because of their positions and, this summer, a tape was released showing a disturbing phone call the Internal Revenue Service placed to a non-profit organization telling it to keep its Christian faith and views on abortion to itself.

A House Foreign Affairs subcommittee will hold a hearing Dec. 12 on the status of jailed American pastor Saeed Abedini, who has been held in some of Iran’s most notorious prisons for more than a year because of his Christian faith.

The hearing before the Subcommittee on Africa, Global Health, Global Human Rights, and International Organizations is expected to investigate Iran’s human rights violations against the American pastor.

Responding to the news, Rep. Frank Wolf, R-Va., an outspoken advocate for religious freedom, told WND that the hearing is a move in the right direction.

“I am pleased that they’re having the hearing next week. The committee hearing is a positive step, and it’s hoped this will put adequate pressure on the Obama administration to speak out for the release of Pastor Abedini,” Wolf said.

American Center for Law and Justice Executive Director Jordan Sekulow said the hearing gives the U. S. a critical opportunity to raise the pastor’s case.

Obama Claims Health Care Problems don’t Reflect on his Management Style (+video)

Photo Credit: APPresident Barack Obama said Thursday that problems with the Obamacare rollout don’t mean he needs to change his White House management style.

Instead, the health care mess is indicative of broader problems with the federal bureaucracy that he hasn’t been able to solve, Obama told Chris Matthews during an MSNBC interview.

“The challenge, I think, that we have going forward is not so much my personal management style or particular issues around White House organization,” Obama said. “It actually has to do with what I referred to earlier, which is we have these big agencies, some of which are outdated, some of which are not designed properly.”

Obama said “it was obvious that we needed additional controls in place” before Affordable Care Act enrollment began Oct. 1. Yet he said none of those controls center around the structure and style of his White House.

Liberal Legal Expert Testifies to Congress: Obama Has Become Danger to Constitution (+videos)

Photo Credit: Chip Somodevilla/Getty ImagesA noted liberal Georgetown University law professor who represented members of Congress in a lawsuit over the Libyan war, represented workers at the secret Area 51 military base and served as counsel on national security cases says Barack Obama is a danger to the U.S. Constitution.

The comments from Jonathan Turley came during a House Judiciary Committee hearing Wednesday.

Chairman Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., asked him: “Professor Turley, the Constitution, the system of separated powers is not simply about stopping one branch of government from usurping another. It’s about protecting the liberty of Americans from the dangers of concentrated government power. How does the president’s unilateral modification of act[s] of Congress affect both the balance of power between the political branches and the liberty interests of the American people?”

Turley replied: “Thank you, Mr. Chairman. The danger is quite severe. The problem with what the president is doing is that he’s not simply posing a danger to the constitutional system. He’s becoming the very danger the Constitution was designed to avoid. That is the concentration of power.”

Turley explained that the “Newtonian orbit that the three branches exist in is a delicate one but it is designed to prevent this type of concentration.”

After 20 Years of Denial, Clinton Admits Pot Smoking, Thinks it’s ‘Funny’ (+video)

Photo Credit: AP/Steve HelberMore than 20 years after saying he “didn’t inhale,” Bill Clinton is setting the record straight about his youthful pot smoking.

“I didn’t say I was holier than thou, I said I tried. I never denied that I used marijuana,” Clinton told Fusion TV’s Jorge Ramos in an interview aired Tuesday night.

Back in 1992, in the midst of his first presidential campaign, Clinton famously equivocated when asked about his drug use, saying that during his days as a Rhodes Scholar in England, “I experimented with marijuana a time or two, and I didn’t like it, and didn’t inhale, and never tried it again.”
