One Way Elizabeth Warren Thinks She’s Obama

By The Daily Caller. Democratic Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s website for her presidential exploratory committee attempts to link questions about her claims of Native American heritage to people who questioned whether former President Barack Obama was born in the United States.

Warren launched the committee Monday, including a website with a “fact squad” meant to push back against criticisms of the senator.

Warren’s website blames “the right-wing machine” for scrutiny of her heritage claims. . .

“Show us your papers. Release your birth certificate. It’s all part of the right’s disgusting effort to use race-baiting and fear-mongering to distract our country and divide our people while they rig the system for the rich and powerful,” Warren’s site claims.

It also displays a photoshopped image of Obama behind Warren that reads: “Don’t worry Liz, I think we fooled them.” (Read more from “One Way Elizabeth Warren Thinks She’s Obama” HERE)

Warren Is Officially Launching 2020 Presidential Committee

By The Daily Caller. Massachusetts Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren announced on the last day of 2018 she is officially forming a presidential exploratory committee in a bid to run for the presidency in 2020.

“America’s middle class is under attack,” Warren said in the announcement video Monday. “How did we get here? Billionaires and big corporations decided they wanted more of the pie. And they enlisted politicians to cut them a bigger slice.”

Speculation regarding the Massachusetts senator’s presidential aspirations have been swirling for months. In June, she announced that she would not be running for president, however, less than three months later she seemingly flipped on her word, revealing she would, in fact, take a “hard look” at launching a presidential campaign following the midterms. During an interview leading up to her November election, Warren refused to commit to serving her full term in the Senate if re-elected.

Warren has also been quietly shopping for office space in the Boston area to headquarter her possible presidential campaign, according to a report earlier in December. And on Sunday night, she changed the name of her twitter account from “elizabethforma” to “ewarren,” removing her home state of Massachusetts. Mexican President’s Immigration Plan Could Be Game Changer

By Fox News. In a bid to reduce migration to the U.S. and attract investment, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has proposed the creation of economic “free zones” along the U.S.-Mexico border.

The Tax Incentive Decree for the Northern Border Region, which Lopez Obrador announced Saturday, would create a free zone that would stretch from the Gulf of Mexico to the Pacific Coast and be more than 15 miles wide, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

Inside the zone, income taxes would be reduced by a third and Value Added Taxes on imported goods would be slashed in half, the minimum wage would increase 100 percent, and fuel prices would equal U.S. prices, the report said.

“It’s going to be the biggest free zone in the world,” Lopez Obrador said. “It is very important to project for winning investment, creating jobs and taking advantage of the economic strength of the United States.”

Lopez Obrador, a self-styled left-wing populist, took office Dec. 1 with the promise to help the country’s poor, noting that the nation’s minimum wage had lost 70 percent of its purchasing power in recent decades after devaluations and economic crises. US, Mexico Seek to Stem Migration From Central America by Funding Development in Region

By USA Today. The United States and Mexico will be cooperating closely to convince thousands of potential Central American migrants to not risk the perilous journey to the U.S. border by investing money into some of the region’s poorest areas.

Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard said up to $10.6 billion in existing U.S. funding would fund “institutional reform” and “good government” initiatives in Central America, along with regional development in southern Mexico – where new Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has promised to pull the region out of poverty through projects ranging from railways to refineries to planting thousands of hectares of trees.

Cross-border cabinet meetings would be convened, Ebrard said, and private sector participation would be included in the plan.

“Both countries recognize the strong links between economic growth in southern Mexico and successfully promoting prosperity, good government and security in Central America,” Ebrard told reporters.

“We’re committed to promoting strong regional economic growth, better-paying jobs and better opportunities for all our citizens.” (Read more from “US, Mexico Seek to Stem Migration From Central America by Funding Development in Region” HERE)

New State Laws for the New Year. Here’s What We Have to Look Forward to in 2019.

By Fox News. Several new state laws are set to take effect on New Year’s Day, including unprecedented minimum wage hikes, equal pay requirements and new abortion statutes — and in California, the legislation will curb gun rights, reduce criminal sentences and force publicly held corporations to elevate women to senior positions.

While the federal minimum wage remains $7.25 per hour, Seattle’s largest companies will have to start paying $16 an hour on Tuesday, after lawmakers brushed aside studies showing that the city’s ongoing minimum wage hikes are actually hurting the low-income workers they aim to help. Many New York City businesses, meanwhile, will have to begin paying at least $15 per hour this week. . .

One new Illinois law will extend the current 72-hour waiting period for purchasing handguns to all firearms; another will allow relatives or law officers to ask courts to remove guns from people believed to be a danger to themselves or others. . .

A Tennessee law will ban local governments from having “sanctuary” policies for people living in the country illegally. It bans local government policies that restrict compliance with federal immigration detainers. . .

A Kansas law, facing a court challenge, bans telemedicine abortions, in which patients seeking abortion pills consult with doctors through teleconferencing. (Read more from “New State Laws for the New Year. Here’s What We Have to Look Forward to in 2019.” HERE)

Hillary Clinton Calls 2018 ‘a Dark Time for Our Country’

By Fox News. Former secretary of state Hillary Clinton bid farewell to 2018 on Instagram Monday by calling the previous 365 days “a dark time for our country.”

Captioning a photo of herself, husband Bill and daughter Chelsea, the 2016 Democratic presidential nominee wrote that she was “grateful to everyone who brought light into it”, including “activists who protected kids at the border, journalists who stood up for truth, organizers who mobilized voters for the 2018 elections, candidates who ran races with grit and inspiration, voters who made their voices heard, and absolutely everyone who marched, donated, called, and protested to fight for the values we share.”

“Here’s to more light in 2019, and to a shared commitment to make it as bright as possible,” she concluded.

It’s unclear what 2019 will hold for Clinton, even as longtime loyalists have left open the possibility that she will make a third run for the White House in 2020. (Read more from “Hillary Clinton Calls 2018 ‘a Dark Time for Our Country'” HERE)

Democrats Announce Plans to End Shutdown – Here’s How

House Democrats have announced plans to pass a funding bill that will end the shutdown — but will not provide funding for President Donald Trump’s border fencing/wall — immediately after being sworn in as the majority party on Thursday. It’s unclear what fate will await the Democrats’ measure in the Republican-controlled Senate.

The government has been partially shut down since Congress was unable to reach a funding deal on December 21st. Republicans and Democrats believed they had reached a deal to fund the government through most of 2019, but plans were scuttled when President Trump prevailed on Republicans in the House to insist on a provision that would provide $5 billion in funding for a border wall with Mexico. Democrats in the Senate promptly threatened to filibuster any funding measure that provided for a border wall, and the two sides have been at an impasse ever since, with no end in sight.

As a result of the November elections, however, Democrats will take over control of the House of Representatives when the new Congress is sworn in on Thursday, and they plan to introduce their own funding measure, according to Politico.

According to Politico, House Democrats plan to immediately pass a two-part funding measure; one that would fund the Department of Homeland Security through February 8th, and one that would fund the rest of the government through the end of the current fiscal year.

Senate Republicans have not yet commented on the Democrats’ plans, but it seems unlikely that the government will re-open unless President Trump changes his public stance in either case. Trump has promised to oppose any plan to re-open the government that does not include funding for his signature campaign progress. Reporter on Trump Dossier Allegations Reveals Truth About Investigation

Well, investigative reporter Michael Isikoff finally admits what many have already suspected: the Trump Dossier isn’t backed up with solid evidence and the most salacious and outrageous allegations are likely false. So, it’s mostly unverifiable. And yet, there are allegations that it was used to secure spy warrants against former Trump campaign officials, like Carter Page. Isikoff said that ex-MI6 spook Christopher Steele had some good leads, but the evidence is just not there (via USA Today):

A reporter, who was among the first to report on former British intelligence agent Michael Steele’s dossier alleging ties between the Trump campaign and Russian officials, said in an interview some of the dossier’s “more sensational allegations” are “likely false.”

Michael Isikoff, the chief investigative correspondent for Yahoo News, said Saturday during an interview on conservative commentator John Ziegler’s “Free Speech Broadcasting” podcast that “Steele was clearly onto something” in his probe into the campaign’s Russian connection but evidence has not surfaced to support some of his specific assertions.

Steele was correct to suspect “that there was a major Kremlin effort to interfere in our elections, that they were trying to help Trump’s campaign, and that there were multiple contacts between various Russian figures close to the government and various people in the Trump campaign,” Isikoff said.

But he said when “you actually get into the details of the Steele dossier, the specific allegations, we have not seen the evidence to support them, and, in fact, there’s good grounds to think that some of the more sensational allegations will never be proven and are likely false.”

The Man Who Could Impeach Trump

By Washington Examiner. Speaker-designate Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., has picked a new guiding force for Democrats investigating and potentially impeaching President Trump when they take control of the House next year.

Douglas Letter, a 40-year veteran of the Justice Department and former associate counsel in President Bill Clinton’s White House, will be appointed to the role of House general counsel, Pelosi said in a statement.

“Douglas Letter has an outstanding and highly decorated record of achievement in service of America,” Pelosi said. “He will bring deep experience and legal expertise to the House, as he counsels and represents our institution, Members and staff as House General Counsel.”

Letter, 65, served as director of the Justice Department’s Civil Division appellate staff up until February — a departure that was facilitated, sources told NPR, because of Trump’s constant criticisms of the DOJ.

He wrote in September it was “worrying” that Trump’s lawyer Rudy Giuliani had suggested the use of executive privilege to bury Mueller’s report at the conclusion of his investigation. He said this assertion seemed “premature and misplaced.” (Read more from “The Man Who Could Impeach Trump” HERE)

40 Years of Experience Walks out the Door of the Justice Department

By NPR. Lawyer Douglas Letter joined the DOJ in 1978. For decades, he defended controversial policies advanced by Democrats and Republicans in the executive branch. . .

Letter, 64, reflected on his long government service on a sunny morning last week at the Georgetown Law Center, where he will be working and teaching national security law.

“My father and several other people in my family were also career public servants,” he said, “so I grew up feeling like public service was a calling.”

Letter fought for the government — no matter which political party controlled it — through the Reagan and Clinton and George W. Bush presidencies. After the terrorist attacks in September 2001, his docket included cases about treatment of detainees, lethal drone strikes and more.

Asked for his proudest moments, he mentions this one, from the Obama years: “The Obergefell case,” he said. “That’s the one where the Supreme Court decided that gay marriage was constitutionally protected.” (Read more from “40 Years of Experience Walks out the Door of the Justice Department” HERE)

IRS Has a New Plan to Investigate Tax Dodgers. Here’s How You Could Be Impacted.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is trying something different. The government currently has a proposal listed on the Federal Business Opportunities website looking for a social media tool that allows IRS agents to find Americans who have dodged their tax liabilities.

Here’s what the proposal says (emphasis mine):

Businesses and individuals increasingly use social media to advertise, promote, and sell products and services. For example, taxpayers can create “online stores” on social networking sites free of cost. Much of this information is unrestricted, allowing the public, businesses and various governmental agencies to discover taxpayers’ locations and income sources.

But the IRS currently has no formal tool to access this public information, compile social media feeds, or search multiple social media sites. The IRS’s hope is that a vendor-supplied tool would help expedite IRS case resolution for existing compliance cases, providing a more efficient way of identifying resources and assisting with the collection of known tax deficiencies, leading to increased collection of revenue involving unfiled tax returns and other tax liabilities.

The IRS emphasizes that this tool, if the agency decides to pursue the use of it, would be done to assist with previously identified tax compliance cases. The IRS respects taxpayer rights, and such a tool would not be used to search the internet or social media sites for purposes of identifying or initiating new tax audits. The IRS believes responsibly using publicly accessible information on the internet or social media sites can assist with previously identified tax cases. In addition, the IRS believes the tool can help it resolve troublesome instances related to tax-related identity theft, helping quickly identify honest taxpayers who have been victimized by identity thieves.

Obama’s Syria Ambassador Has a Surprising Response to Trump’s Decision

U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to begin pulling American troops from Syria was met with criticism and outcry from pundits and lawmakers on both sides of the aisle, but former Ambassador to Syria Robert S. Ford called the move “essentially correct.”

Critics of Trump’s decision announced on Dec. 19 by White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, are calling it a “huge Obama-like mistake,” win for America’s enemies and betrayal of our allies.

But Ford, who served as U.S. ambassador to Syria under President Barack Obama from 2011-2014, debunked the reasons for critique and added that the president needs to develop a national security team that can better relay and implement his foreign policy objectives.

“[T]he president should view the hullabaloo that erupted after he announced the Syrian pullout as an opportunity to take a number of steps to make the most of his essentially correct, but widely unpopular, move,” Ford wrote Thursday in The Washington Post.

Ford pointed out that many opponents fear the pullout will lend a victory to Russia, Iran and Syria, but the former ambassador called this fear “absurd,” noting that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s regime already controls roughly two-thirds of Syria. The regions that the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) control are largely deserts and drought-prone oil fields with low-value crude.
