By Alexander Bolton. Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee have come to a consensus decision to not have hearings or a vote on a Supreme Court nominee in 2016.
“We believe the American people need to decide who is going to make this appointment rather than a lame-duck president,” Senate Republican Whip John Cornyn (Texas) told reporters Tuesday after a special meeting of the committee.
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said members of the panel reached a “consensus” that there should not be hearings or a vote on President Obama’s nominee.
“My decision is that I don’t think we should have a hearing. We should let the next president pick the Supreme Court justice,” he said after emerging from a meeting in Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s (R-Ky.) office.

McConnell: Not a ‘Snowball’s Chance in Hell’ I’ll Relent on SCOTUS
By Lauren French and John Bresnahan. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told a group of staunch House conservatives there isn’t “a snowball’s chance in hell” that he will back down from his opposition to confirming a Supreme Court justice before a new president is elected.
The Kentucky Republican received a friendly reception from the board members of the House Freedom Caucus Tuesday evening. During a 45-minute meeting, the lawmakers expressed broad support for McConnell’s position on the high court vacancy.

Ever since colonial times, our political leaders have always been careful to ensure that those immigrating to our land would be net contributors to our society. From the 1600s on, colonies passed laws barring entry of criminals, those with communicable diseases, and those likely to become a public charge. States continued this tradition after they became part of the federal union and when Congress started regulating immigration in 1875 and 1882 they followed suit on a national level.
Even during the open period of immigration towards the turn of the twentieth century, immigration officials carefully examined every immigrant and denied entry even to those with eye diseases, even if it meant splitting up an entire family. These laws and practices were rooted in the common sense principle that the first order of a government, vested with power by the consent of the governed, is to protect the sovereignty of the citizenry above other interests.
How far we have come from this bedrock principle. Our country is now flooded with the impoverished, criminal elements, and those bringing in diseases we eradicated long ago. Here are two disturbing stories that illustrate the point.
Immigrants with HIV and STDs:
Obama’s HHS recently announced its intention to lift the ban on immigrants with STDs. Jon Feere of the Center for Immigration Studies explains the significance of this decision:
In his first year in office, President Obama lifted an entry ban on foreigners with HIV. In his final year in office he will lift the entry ban on three more sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). The president’s own Health and Human Services department says this guarantees more infections in the United States, proving once again that immigration is the defining issue for politicians like Obama. Increased immigration trumps all other concerns.
While tuberculosis, leprosy, syphilis, and gonorrhea are still on the list of diseases that would render an immigrant-carrier inadmissible, it does us no good for all the illegal immigrants who are carrying these diseases but are not deported.
Now, you might be wondering how the people’s representatives have lost control over our sovereignty and how unelected bureaucrats can overturn long-standing law and tradition unilaterally. Yup, you guessed it: this began with a Republican president. On July 30, 2008, President Bush signed into law the United States Global Leadership Against HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria Reauthorization Act (H.R.5501/S.2731). Among the many pork provisions in this bill, Section 305 repealed a 1993 law (INA §212(a)(1)(A)(i)) categorically banning immigrants with HIV. By repealing that language, HHS was given full discretion to determine who is admissible and who is not. Now we are stewing in the Obama misery Republicans helped create in 2008.
Criminal Aliens:
New internal ICE figures posted by the Washington Examiner reveal that 88,000, or 60%, of all criminal aliens apprehended in the last fiscal year were released into our population. So after promising to focus on criminal aliens, Obama has suspended deportation for them as well, thanks to the green light given to him by liberal Republican senators like Marco Rubio. This is on top of the existing statistics prior to last fiscal year. Between the 179,027 criminal aliens ordered deported but still at large and the 194,791 convicted criminal aliens who have not yet been issued deportation orders, there are over 375,000 identified criminal aliens that have not been deported.

President Obama’s push to close the Guantanamo Bay detention facility may be forcing the Department of Defense to release suspected terrorists newly captured by U.S. forces overseas, according to a Republican lawmaker and former Marine.
Rep. Duncan Hunter (R., Calif.) recently penned a letter to Defense Secretary Ash Carter expressing concern that Obama’s refusal to send new terrorist suspects to Guantanamo Bay is allowing them to return to the battlefield to fight U.S. forces and resume acts of terrorism.
“Given the clear position of Congress on the proposed closure of Guantanamo Bay and the prohibition on detainee transfers to domestic facilities, I am concerned that the Department of Defense is being forced to relinquish control of dangerous individuals captured by U.S. forces due to the president’s refusal to utilize Guantanamo Bay for new detention cases,” Hunter wrote to Carter on January 28.
“And once in foreign custody, an individual’s release can occur despite the best efforts of the U.S. to keep that individual in custody,” Hunter continued. “An already high-rate of recidivism adds to the probability that some individuals will subsequently reengage U.S. forces on the battlefield or resume terrorist activity. This puts American lives at risk.”
Obama, who promised to shut down Guantanamo Bay when he took office, has blocked captured terrorist suspects from being sent to the military prison. This, coupled with the United States’ closure of the detention facility near the Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan at the end of 2014, raises questions about the Pentagon’s ability to detain suspected terrorists captured under the Authorization for Use of Military Force, Hunter wrote. President Obama’s silence on a wave of recent killings of police officers is being ripped by law enforcement, with one Maryland sheriff taking to Facebook to mock that he will “save you a spot next to me!” at this week’s funerals for two deputies.
“Mr. President, your silence about these events SPEAKS VOLUMES!!!! PS: I’ll be standing outside in the cold next week with my deputies for the funerals of the Harford Co deputies; I’ll save you a spot next to me!” Facebooked Carroll County Sheriff Jim DeWees.
His post, blasted throughout law enforcement social media and highlighted by the National Sheriffs’ Association, has become part of the rallying cry among cops that the president is ignoring attacks on them, and even fostering anti-police feelings.
The Fraternal Order of Police even called on Obama to expand hate-crime laws to those targeting police. In a letter also posted on Facebook, FOP President Chuck Canterbury wrote, “Mr. President, that is eight officers–six in less than a week–who have been gunned down by assailants striking from ambush or career criminals with active warrants who decided they would not be taken into custody, no matter the cost. President Barack Obama’s plan to impose strict new regulations on U.S. power plants hit a significant legal snag on Tuesday with a split decision by the nation’s highest court. According to news reports, the 5 to 4 U.S. Supreme Court ruling put up an immediate roadblock, blocking the implementation of carbon emission caps favored by the Obama administration.
As Fox News reported this week, Obama has defended his plan to slash power plant emissions by insisting it would help stave off the effects of global warming. Under his proposal, each state would be required to submit a proposal by this September to the Environmental Protection Agency, detailing how power plants located within its borders would cut carbon dioxide emissions by roughly 33 percent before 2030. It didn’t take Republicans long to respond to President Obama’s record $4.1 trillion budget proposal – labeling it “a progressive manual for growing the federal government at the expense of hardworking Americans,” as House Speaker Paul Ryan put it.
The fiscal 2017 budget plan, Obama’s eighth and final spending blueprint, is being met with a dead-on-arrival mentality on Capitol Hill after it was released late Tuesday morning.
As the president proposes a raft of new taxes, though, he’s also looking to drive the debate on cybersecurity and other big issues. One of the largest items is a request for $19 billion to combat cyber threats, an increase of $5 billion from last time.
Cybersecurity funding is an issue that has won bipartisan support from lawmakers in the past, and the appeal for funds comes amid mounting threats from China, Russia and beyond. After meeting with his national security team and cybersecurity advisers, Obama told reporters one of the biggest gaps between the government and private sector is information technology “and it makes everyone’s security vulnerable.”
But Republicans described the overall plan as a bid to grow government even bigger. In all, Obama’s budget would increase taxes by $2.6 trillion over the coming decade, nearly double the $1.4 trillion in new taxes Obama sought and failed to achieve in last year’s budget. The taxpayer tab for the vacations for President Obama and his family now has surpassed $74 million, even though Obama once said a president must be prepared to give up taking vacations for the sake of the nation.
The word comes from Judicial Watch, which has been demanding public records from the government and filing lawsuits to get the information about the Obamas’ profligate spending on travel.
Judicial Watch found taxpayers have spent at least $74,124,562.48 on the family’s down times.
“Now that we’ve sued, the Secret Service has stopped ignoring our requests for details on more of the costs of Barack Obama’s luxury vacations,” Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton said on Wednesday.
“Taxpayers, the U.S. Air Force and the Secret Service are being abused by Barack Obama, who too often treats Air Force One and his security detail like some of sort of kingly entourage. President Barack Obama said today in a speech at the Islamic Society of Baltimore that one fact that has not been “communicated on a regular basis through our media” is that “for more than a thousand years people have been drawn to Islam’s message of peace.”
“Whoever wants to enter paradise, the Prophet Mohammad taught, let him treat people the way he would love to be treated,” Obama said. “And for Christians like myself I am assuming that sounds familiar.”
