President Obama, with an eye on cementing his legacy and countering the narrative on the Republican campaign trail, used his final State of the Union address Tuesday night to defend his economic record – and, in stark language, downplay the threat from the Islamic State.
“Over-the-top claims that this is World War III just play into their hands,” the president said, arguing that ISIS fighters “do not threaten our national existence.”
The remarks on ISIS are sure to rile Republican critics who say the president’s strategy for confronting the group is inadequate – particularly just hours after ISIS was blamed for another deadly attack, this time in Istanbul.
Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, one of the leading candidates for the GOP presidential nomination, tweeted afterward that the address was “less a State of the Union and more a state of denial.”
The backdrop of the address undeniably was election-year politics, though Obama is not on the ballot. Throughout the speech, the president took several implicit jabs at the GOP candidates competing for his job, and in doing so sought to shore up his own legacy. Kim Davis, the Kentucky clerk who refused to issue marriage licenses for homosexuals, commented on what she considered to be President Barack Obama’s legacy just prior to the his final State of the Union speech, telling CNSNews.com, “I think he has chipped away at American Christian values piece by piece, and I hope and I pray that he garners some light at the end of this dark tunnel that we’ve been in.”
The Rowan County, Ky., clerk was briefly jailed last year following the Supreme Court ruling that legalized homosexual “marriage” for refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples because it went against her Christian beliefs.
Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) invited Davis to the State of the Union, who spoke with CNSNews.com on Capitol Hill Tuesday evening.
The invitation is “a great honor,” said Davis.

Commenting on the Islamist radical who allegedly tried to kill a police officer in Philadelphia on Friday, Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke said that “President Obama’s JV team” – meaning ISIS or the Islamic State – had “struck again,” and added that because of his policies Obama “is incapable of protecting Americans.”
“President Obama’s JV team has struck again,” said Sheriff Clarke on Fox’s Hannity on Jan. 8.
“This is not the first time that Islamic terror or Islamic-inspired terror has struck at home here in the United States,” he said.
“This president is not only unwilling to face the fact that we are being targeted here on the homeland, he is incapable of protecting Americans,” said the sheriff . . .

Barack Obama is reportedly already lobbying for his post presidency position: Secretary General of the United Nations.
According to the Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Jarida, Obama has discussed the topic with Republican, Democrat, and Jewish officials in the United States.
The Jerusalem Post is reporting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is working behind the scenes with moderate Arab governments in order to thwart the president’s potential succession plans.
A source close to the prime minister told Al-Jarida that he “sees an opportunity to establish good relations based on shared interests with moderate states from which Obama has moved away.” These would likely include the Persian Gulf states who believe Obama betrayed them by pushing through the nuclear deal with Iran.
“Obama’s term is ending with him forging an alliance with Iran, coming to an agreement with it on its nuclear program which in the end will result in a similar scenario that took place with North Korea,” the source said.
“Wasn’t eight years of having Obama in office enough?,” Netanyahu is quoted in the Kuwaiti daily as telling associates. “Eight years during which he ignored Israel? A North Dakota man who allegedly planned to dognap Bo – one of the White House pooches – was arrested in Washington D.C. this week, according to court documents.
Scott Stockert was charged Wednesday after Secret Service agents were alerted that a man was intending to steal the Portugese water dog, according to Politico. The first family has two water dogs, Bo and Sunny.
Stockert’s car was found to contain a 12-gauge shotgun and a black bolt action rifle, as well as over 300 rounds of ammunition. He was arrested at a Washington hotel and charged with illegally carrying a rifle or shotgun outside a home or business . . .
The first family’s search for a dog to join them at the White House was widely publicized. On election night in 2008, then President-elect Obama said that his daughters, Sasha and Malia, had “earned the new puppy that’s coming with us to the White House.” Bo, a male Portuguese water dog, joined the family in 2009 and was a gift from then Massachusetts Sen. Stiff-armed by a Republican-led Congress, President Barack Obama took to national television Thursday night in an effort to sell stricter gun control laws to the American public.
During a town hall event televised live by CNN, the president called the suggestion that he wants to take guns away a “conspiracy.”
He said his efforts are instead a “modest” move toward curbing gun violence, which he called an epidemic in the United States.
“This is not a recipe for solving every problem,” Obama said. “The goal here is just to make progress.”
The hour-long program, called “Guns in America,” was broadcast two days after Obama delivered an emotional appeal to mitigate gun deaths through executive actions expanding background checks and investing in mental health.
CNN’s Anderson Cooper fielded questions to the president, offering an opportunity for both gun rights advocates and gun control proponents to discuss one of the nation’s most controversial issues.
In one exchange, Cooper said some Americans simply don’t trust Obama’s motives, asking the president if it was “fair to call it a conspiracy.”
“Yes, it is fair to call it a conspiracy,” Obama said. “What are you saying? Are you suggesting that the notion that we are creating a plot to take everybody’s guns away so that we can impose martial law is [not] a conspiracy? Yes, that is a conspiracy! I would hope that you would agree with that. Is that controversial?”
Taya Kyle, the widow of “American Sniper” Chris Kyle, disputed Obama’s repeated claim that increased gun control would prevent violence, saying the administration’s measures provide a “false sense of hope.”
“The thing is that the laws we create don’t stop these horrific things from happening, right? And that’s a very tough pill to swallow.”
Obama attempted to appeal to gun owners in the audience, urging them to support measures that would close background check “loopholes” so that firearms are less likely to flow into the hands of criminals.
“I respect the Second Amendment; I respect the right to bear arms,” Obama said. “But all of us can agree that it makes sense to do everything we can to keep guns out of the hands of people who would do other people harm.”
The National Rifle Association, the nation’s largest gun rights organization, declined an invitation to partake in the event. In a statement to CNN, an NRA spokesman said that the advocacy group “sees no reason to participate in a public relations spectacle orchestrated by the White House.”
The event took place at George Mason University, just 3 miles west of the NRA’s national headquarters in Fairfax, Va., a suburb of Washington, D.C.
Though the group did not send a representative in person, it remained active on Twitter to rebuke the president’s remarks.

Obama has struggled through the past seven years of his presidency to advance substantial gun control proposals, moving him to act alone Tuesday to expand federal background checks in gun sales through greater firearm licensing requirements.
The president also ordered additional FBI staff to process applications and requested $500 million to invest in mental health.
A new CNN/ORC poll released Thursday found that 67 percent of Americans back the president’s executive actions on guns, while 32 percent oppose them.

Obama Wipes Away Tears as He Calls for New Gun Measures

President Barack Obama wept openly Tuesday as he delivered a forceful defense of new executive actions on gun violence, a set of modest proposals to tighten loopholes that likely face quick legal challenges and could be vulnerable to reversal by a Republican White House.
The president ran through a list of mass shootings that have happened during his time in office, and teared up as he recalled the schoolchildren gunned down in Newtown, Connecticut in 2012.
“First graders in Newtown. First graders,” Obama said, pausing to collect himself. “Every time I think about those kids, it gets me mad.”
Obama offered a new argument to counter gun rights enthusiasts, noting that mass shootings have taken place as Americans have tried to exercise other rights, such as attending worship services or watching a movie. The right to bear firearms is not more important than the right to worship freely or peaceably assemble, he said, and called upon Congress to be “brave enough to stand up to the gun lobby’s lies.”
“Every single year, more than 30,000 Americans have their lives cut short by guns. Thirty thousand. Suicides, domestic violence, gang shootouts, accidents. Hundreds of thousands of Americans have lost brothers and sisters or buried their own children,” he said, flanked in the White House East Room by family members of victims. Barack Obama is very concerned about gun violence.
That’s why he voted against charging school shooters as adults back in Chicago and why Federal gun crime prosecutions have fallen to a new low under him. It’s why his amnesty has driven hordes of gang members to America even while he continues freeing violent drug dealers from prison.
Like this guy.
A grand jury indicted him on multiple counts of selling crack and cocaine and for using guns as he dealt drugs from a mobile home in Airport Heights. The prosecution had a videotape of the man and fellow members of a largely Dominican gang attaching a crude silencer to a handgun, bags of the illicit drugs scattered on a nearby table.
Obama let him go. Because he’s that concerned about gun violence.
Obama backs #BlackLivesMatter even though the movement is protecting the very criminals responsible for most of the gun violence in places like Chicago.
A breakdown of the Chicago killing fields shows that 83% of those murdered in Chicago in one year had criminal records. In Philly, it’s 75%. In Milwaukee it’s 77% percent. In New Orleans, it’s 64%. In Baltimore, it’s 91%. Many were felons who had served time. And as many as 80% of the homicides were gang related.
And then there are all the ISIS folks and other Muslim terrorists. Obama wants to bring tens of thousands of Syrian Muslims to America (not the Yazidis or Christians who are actually persecuted, he let in only 1 Syrian Yazidi) who poll as supporting ISIS by at least 13%. That’s 1,300 ISIS supporters in every batch of 10,000 Syrian migrants.
But Obama is super-concerned about gun violence. That’s why the Unilateral Ruler will issue a bunch of executive orders because he can’t legally get these laws passed. And these laws will predictably end up hurting legal gun owners rather than the criminals he panders to.
Obama doesn’t want to fight gun violence by fighting criminals. He wants to take away the civil rights of Americans instead. And then he’ll free more drug dealers and bring in more terrorists. By Jack Davis. The presidential vacation to Hawaii is burning a hole in the federal budget to the tune of about $470,000 a day, according to federal documents provided to the taxpayer watchdog group Judicial Watch.
“We can’t drive our SUVs and eat as much as we want and keep our homes on 72 degrees at all times … and then just expect that other countries are going to say OK,” Obama said in 2008 while campaigning for office. “That’s not leadership. That’s not going to happen,” he added.
However, according to documents just received by the watchdog group after two years of waiting, the Obama family vacation to Hawaii two years ago cost nearly $8 million. The group, which has filed Freedom of Information requests to ascertain how much the Obamas spend while on vacation, estimates that Americans may have spent over $50 million for the seven winter vacations taken by the first family to date. One more vacation is on tap for next year, when Obama will be a lame duck president.
“It seems our lawsuits finally got the attention of the Secret Service. It is easy to see why the Secret Service, reeling from its own scandals, covered up these outrageous expense numbers for just one of Obama’s luxury Christmas vacation,” said Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton. “The $317,000 in Secret Service expenses are only the tip of the iceberg for the true cost of Obama’s 2013 vacation in Hawaii, which has now skyrocketed to $8,098,060. It is nice to know that Obama’s ‘tradition’ of Christmas vacations in Hawaii comes courtesy of overburdened taxpayers.”

Mele Kalikimaka: Taxpayer’s Gift to Obama Is $470,000 a Day Hawaiian Vacation
By Paul Bedard. The first family’s Christmas vacation to Hawaii two years ago cost over $8 million, giving an indication of the price of their current 17-day winter break, according to federal documents provided to the taxpayer watchdog group Judicial Watch.
Added up, their seven vacations to the island could total over $50 million, and he still has one more likely as president at the end of next year.

Judicial Watch announced today that it recently received expense records from the Department of Homeland Security revealing that Secret Service expenses for the Obama family vacation to Honolulu during December 2013-January 2014 cost taxpayers at least $316,698.03. These new expenses bring the total for the Hawaii Christmas vacation trip to $8,098,060.33. The Secret Service waited nearly two years to produce the requested numbers to Judicial Watch.
The heavily redacted records were obtained on December 28 in response to a January 6, 2014, Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request.
