The Atlantic Changes Headlines After Backlash Over Comparing Catholic Rosary to Assault Weapons

The Atlantic changed headlines multiple times in response to massive backlash over an op-ed that compared the Catholic rosary to an “assault weapon.”

Authored by Daniel Panneton, the article, originally titled, “How the Rosary Became an Extremist Symbol,” featured a rosary that had bullet holes in place of beads and argued that the Catholic sacramental had become a tool of violent militants.

“Militia culture, a fetishism of Western civilization, and masculinist anxieties have become mainstays of the far right in the U.S.—and rad-trad Catholics have now taken up residence in this company,” he wrote.

“The phenomenon might be tempting to dismiss as mere trolling or merchandising, and ironical provocations based on traditionalist Catholic symbols do exist, but the far right’s constellations of violent, racist, and homophobic online milieus are well documented for providing a pathway to radicalization and real-world terrorist attacks,” he continued.

The article instantly went viral, prompting outrage from Catholics who have historically been portrayed in America as an invading force to be feared. In response, the Atlantic published two headlines linking the rosary to gun extremism before finally settling on an actual photo of the rosary instead of the bullet hole rosary graphic. Catholic University to Host Fundraiser for Planned Parenthood

Loyola Marymount University (LMU) will host a fundraiser for Planned Parenthood on Friday, November 5.

The Catholic university, located in Los Angeles and sponsored by the Jesuits (Society of Jesus), the Marymount Sisters (Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary), and the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange, states on its website the school and its religious leaders “share a common dedication to academic excellence, spiritual growth, and social justice as hallmarks of a contemporary Catholic university.”

A petition sent from RenewLMU to school President Tim Snyder, however, requests the event be cancelled, as PJ Media observed.

“Founded by the eugenicist and virulent anti-Black racist Margaret Sanger, Planned Parenthood is the largest abortion provider in the United States and has been caught red-handed in the illegal sale of fetal tissues and has been complicit in sex trafficking,” LMU alumna Samantha (Stribling) Stephenson wrote in the petition.

RenewLMU recommends LMU Women in Politics, the fundraiser’s sponsor, “might select a more worthy recipient of funds, one that more effectively supports women’s dignity and whose primary purposes are not at odds with the Catholic Church.” (Read more from “Catholic University to Host Fundraiser for Planned Parenthood” HERE)

Catholic University Calls ‘White Privilege’ America’s ‘Original Sin’

By Townhall. Several Sacred Heart University professors took part in a discussion that labels white privilege America’s “original sin.”

At a panel titled “Wrestling with the legacy of America’s Original Sin” that took place in late June as a part of the Heart Challenges Hate series, moderator, Associate Dean Michelle Loris divulged how white privilege is the cause behind most of the racism in America, both in the past and present.

“We want to discuss how white privilege is systemic and is made up of all of those institutional advantages that white people enjoy over people of color, solely because white people are white,” said Loris at the start of the panel. “We want to discuss how white privilege is embedded in all our institutions of power and how it is integrated in the unconscious assumptions and perceptions, with which white people can operate and interact in the world and black people can not.” . . .

Catholic studies professor June-Anne Greenly called white privilege a “freely wielded exercise of a disordered soul.”

“We have to address the exterior, the behaviors that are the result of that sinful state,” said Greenly. “But I think we need to ask people, in terms of how we understand sin, at least the Catholic tradition, to do a really tight inventory.” (Read more from “Catholic University Calls ‘White Privilege’ America’s ‘Original Sin'” HERE)

Sales of ‘White Fragility’—and Other Anti-Racism Books—Jumped Over 2000% After Protests Began

By Forbes. Sales of top books about race increased by up to 6,800% in the aftermath of George Floyd’s death, according to new data provided to Forbes by NPD BookScan[.] . . .

The top-selling title White Fragility: Why It’s So Hard For White People to Talk About Racism by Robin DiAngelo, who is white, moved 437,289 print copies from May to June, up 2264% from 18,492 in the two months prior.

“White Fragility is, in the end, a book about how to make certain educated white readers feel better about themselves,” wrote Columbia University linguistics professor John McWhorter in The Atlantic. “The sad truth is that anyone falling under the sway of this blinkered, self-satisfied, punitive stunt of a primer has been taught, by a well-intentioned but tragically misguided pastor, how to be racist in a whole new way.” (Read more from “Sales of ‘White Fragility’—and Other Anti-Racism Books—Jumped Over 2000% After Protests Began” HERE)

The Fall and Future Rise of Catholicism

Satan: “Give me one hundred years and I can destroy the Catholic Church.”

God: “You have it.”

This visionary exchange is not an obscure rumor in a small backwater village, but from Pope Leo himself, in 1884, after he collapsed saying Mass one morning in the Vatican. When he came to, he immediately composed the famous Prayer to St. Michael and ordered it read aloud at the end of every Mass. Many Catholic parishes still do.

Catholics and non-Catholics alike have a right to know what is going on in the Catholic Church. A confusing and inconsistent pope is augmented by homosexuals within the Vatican and in many of the key positions. Papal appointments point to ominous signs of continued confusion.

Just when this hundred years began, and whether it was a literal hundred years, we do not know. But fast forward to the Fatima visions of 1917, warning of Russia’s role in the destruction of freedom and the Church, and then when Joe Stalin ordered the historically acknowledged infiltration of the Russian Orthodox Church in the 1920s. That he ordered the same to be done to the Catholic Church was only logical. Himself a former seminarian, Stalin realized that homosexuals would be his best agents, men who had lost any sense of natural law, sacrilege, conscience, or fear of Judgment.

While Russia even now is rediscovering Christianity, the influence of communism continues in the west. Dietrich and Alice von Hildebrand were close personal friends of Pope John Paul II before and after his rise to the papacy. Dietrich takes his place with the great Catholic intellects of the 20th century who opposed both fascism and communism.

Dietrich privately interviewed ex-communist Bella Dodd, an admitted Stalinist agent, after she had testified before Congress in the 1950s. She returned to Catholicism under the aegis of America’s most famous Catholic of the 20th century, Bishop Fulton J. Sheen. Dodd said that she herself placed 1200 communist/homosexuals into American seminaries and knew that the number was over 3,000 from the work of other agents.

Alice, about thirty years Dietrich’s junior and now in her 90s gave a long interview with the Catholic news site Church Militant, the thorn in the side of the USCCB. She stated that as each subsequent generation of homosexual prelates wormed themselves into the hierarchy, they made sure that faithful priests were punished and marginalized, while pliant ones were brought

into the matrix. They would be rewarded with influence and appointments, then coached into promoting the denigration of the rich legacy of Catholicism.

Becoming drum-beat supporters of socialism was part of the agenda, rather than the far more effective and selfless reputation of Catholic institutions. Contraception and abortion were to be scorned or sidelined in importance. Instruction in the faith was to be insipid, and liturgical “reforms” transferred the essence of the Mass from an unbloody sacrifice of depth and mystery into a shallow, informal celebration where the focus became Man rather than God. Thus, we can now understand the completely unauthorized changes that came under the false “Spirit of Vatican II”. They now have generations of momentum behind their acceptance.

The earthquakes of confusion initiated by Pope Francis are now seen in the light of this homosexual or Lavender Mafia. It explains the marginalization of faithful Catholics who have begged for relief from the many ills plaguing the Church. This includes the mysterious staying power of “Catholic” politicians, who have worked in concert promoting the sexual revolution, socialism, homosexuality, contraception and abortion.

Even as prayers were said in churches throughout the United States this week, the focus was only on the victims, unquestionably just and necessary. However, not once did the prayers or letters mention the word “homosexuality” and refused to confront the foundational evil that has infected the Church: bishops and priests who are practicing homosexuals themselves or protect those who are, whether willingly or through intimidation.

The almost daily exposure of this is likely an answer to prayer. Catholicism has an uncanny ability to resurface after every crisis brings it to the edge of annihilation. Since Christ’s Passion, this has been discovered by the Romans, Arians, Moslems, Norsemen, Albigensians, Protestants, and the French Revolutionaries.

We await the certain rebound of the Church. It will be smaller, but stronger. It is the solution Jesus took when his disciples walked away from him in John 6 because of His “hard sayings”. It might even reunite much of Christendom. It will take a while.

But it will happen.

North Carolina Mother Thrown in Jail for Having Her Daughter Baptized in Catholic Church

A North Carolina judge threw a mother in jail for seven days for having her daughter baptized without the father’s presence and consent.

Kendra Stocks of Charlotte, N.C. will report to jail Friday to begin her seven-day sentence after District Court Judge Sean Smith ruled in March 2017 that she acted in “bad-faith disregard” and was therefore in contempt of court for having her daughter baptized without consulting Paul Schaaf, the child’s father, according to Fox8.

Stocks’ sentence is based on a previous custody battle between her and Schaaf, to whom the court gave final authority on all legal decisions regarding the child, including decisions about religion, according to WSOC.

Schaaf and Stocks fought a custody battle over their daughter two years ago. The couple allegedly could never agree on religion, so the judge granted Schaaf full custody of the child, “specifically including decisions concerning religion” in 2016.

Both Schaaf and Stocks are practicing Catholics and both wanted their daughter to be baptized.

The source of their initial disagreement that delayed their daughter’s baptism remains unclear.

The judge warned both parents that if either of them breached the terms of the custody decision they could be fined or sentenced to jail.

Stocks evidently ignored the warning and took her daughter to be baptized the very next day. Schaaf found out about the baptism via Facebook.

“The mother has acted selfishly by depriving the father of the ability to be present at an event that was extraordinarily important to him,” court documents read, according to WSOC.

Stocks appealed the judge’s ruling, but a superior court upheld the ruling on Feb. 12.

“I’m scared,” Stocks told The Charlotte Observer. “I’m sad about what has happened. I don’t regret having her baptized. That was in her best interest … I don’t see how this is in the best interest of the family. Her father is sending her mother to jail.”

Nadia Margherio, Stocks’ attorney, argued that Stocks had not violated the judge’s decision since both parents had expressed a desire to have their daughter baptized and the judge had not explicitly stated that one parent must notify another about a baptism.

The judge remained unconvinced, given court records that showed he had repeatedly asked Stocks whether she understood his order.

Stocks said that both sides of the family attended the baptism, with Schaaf’s brother even attending as the child’s godfather. Stock’s said she had no idea why Schaaf did not know or did not remember the child’s baptism was scheduled for that day.

“He did not know because nobody told him,” Schaaf’s lawyer, Jonathan Feit, said according to the Observer.

Feit argued that Stocks was not being jailed for baptizing her daughter, but for ignoring the judge’s order.

Christians Asking Is the Pope Still Catholic?

Is the pope Catholic? . . .

It’s a question being asked about the current head of the Roman Catholic Church, Francis, who critics believe is showing signs of abandoning fundamental Catholic doctrines – including the existence of hell.

In a recent address, Pope Francis declared “everything will be saved” upon Christ’s return.

“The thought that at the end of our history there will be merciful Jesus suffices in order to have faith and not to curse life,” the pope said. “Everything will be saved. Everything.”

That would suggest the church is opening up to “universalism,” the doctrine that everyone will ultimately be given salvation, according to Eugenio Scalfari, founder of the Italian newspaper la Repubblica. (Read more from “Christians Asking Is the Pope Still Catholic?” HERE)

Abortion Horror: Hospital Tries to Force Nurse to Participate

A lawsuit alleges the Duke University Health System tried to force a Catholic nurse to help carry out abortions.

The case, filed by the Thomas More Law Center of Ann Arbor, Michigan, on behalf of Sara Pedro, alleges Duke discriminated against and retaliated against the Catholic emergency-department nurse because of her pro-life religious beliefs.

“This case illustrates the unfortunate dangers faced today by individuals who seek to remain faithful to their religious beliefs in the workplace,” said Thomas More lawyer Tyler Brooks.

“With this lawsuit, however, we intend to show that even very large employers must respect the civil rights of their Christian employees.”

The case was brought in U.S. District Court for the Middle District of North Carolina. (Read more from “Abortion Horror: Hospital Tries to Force Nurse to Participate” HERE)

Catholic Hospitals in Belgium Now Provide Euthanasia as an Option for Those With ‘Hopeless Suffering’

Psychiatric patients in Catholic-run Belgium hospitals will now be given the option to die.

The Belgian branch of the Catholic religious order the Brothers of Charity said on their website that they take patients’ requests to die seriously. Those with “hopeless suffering” are now allowed to die upon request. They will make sure the patient is killed only if they don’t have a “reasonable” prospect of treating them.

The chairman of the hospital’s board told a Belgian news source that allowing people to choose to die is consistent with their criteria for treatment. Now they are making it available as an option. The “inviolability of life” is not an absolute, he said.

The order runs 13 psychiatric clinics in Belgium. Previously, its hospitals had sent people who wanted to die to other hospitals. It began treating the mentally ill in 1815.

A Real Tragedy

The head of Brothers of Charity “strongly opposes” the practice. Speaking to MercatorNet, Brother René Stockman called the decision “a real tragedy.” The order had resisted the push by the Belgian government and medical establishment for widely available euthanasia. Now, he said, the order’s opponents are saying “that finally the group of the Brothers of Charity capitulated and came into their camp.”

Catholic theologian Fr. Thomas Petri told LifeSiteNews he wasn’t surprised. Euthanasia, he said, “is not only an offense against the Gospel of Jesus Christ, but an offense against life itself.”

Petri said the board of Brothers of Charity insist they are both pro-life and pro-euthanasia. The contradiction is irrational. “In the United States, such persons are normally encouraged to seek psychiatric care.”

The order began its work with the mentally ill by “breaking of the shackles used to restrain the mentally ill in the crypts of Gerard the Devil’s Castle in Ghent,” according to its website. Then, they freed them. Now they’ll help them die. ‘Catholics for Choice’ Isn’t Catholic and Neither Is Its Disgusting Message

A pro-abortion group wrongly calling itself “Catholic” is once again drawing fire from those who actually adhere to the church’s 2,000-year-old, immutable teachings on life.

This week, the group “Catholics for Choice” ran full-page, color newspaper ads in multiple states where Catholics form a significant voting bloc. One such ad that ran in the Chicago Tribune carries the heading “Abortion in Good Faith,” featuring an elderly woman named Linda saying, “It is because of my Catholic faith, not in spite of it, that I support women who make conscience-based decisions to have an abortion.”

The ad is in direct contradiction to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, which states, “Since the first century the Church has affirmed the moral evil of every procured abortion,” and that the “teaching has not changed and remains unchangeable,” and that every willed abortion “gravely contrary to the moral law.” The ad goes on to call taxpayer-funded abortions a “social justice issue.”

Catholic bishops across America have taken issue with the group’s grossly errant statement and message, especially when it comes to portraying itself as a Catholic organization.

“Despite what is implied by its name, Catholics for Choice is not a member-oriented organization and has no affiliation with the Roman Catholic Church,” reads a statement from the Texas Catholic Conference, a statewide association of the Roman Catholic dioceses in Texas, in response to similar ads run in the Dallas Morning News, Houston Chronicle, and San Antonio Express-News. “Instead, it is financed by grants from a few secular organizations pushing a pro-abortion agenda. It seldom ventures beyond Washington to Texas, unless it is to buy expensive, full-page ads when it serves their pro-abortion agenda.”

Cardinal Timothy Dolan, Archbishop of New York, issued a statement, calling the misleading ad offensive.

“The biggest falsehood in these advertisements is the statement that ‘as a Catholic’ a person can respect and support a decision to kill an unborn person,” reads another statement from Bishop Steven J. Lopes of the Personal Ordinariate of the Chair of St. Peter in Houston. “The insinuation that Catholic faith can lead a person to sanction something which is always and everywhere a moral evil is fraudulent, deceitful, and simply wrong.”

This is not the first time “‘Catholics’ for Choice” has clashed with bishops over a media campaign. Last year, the group took out another full-page, color advertisement on The Washington Post’s daily Express tabloid in June smearing the National Bishops Conference “Fortnight for Freedom” campaign, which seeks to defend and uphold religious liberty against a host of secular attacks.

The ad depicts a cartoonish caricature of a Catholic bishop pointing to the reader (a la Uncle Sam), saying “We want YOU to help us discriminate.”

Ethics & Public Policy Center fellow Stephen White called the ad “old-timey anti-Catholicism” in response, saying “the folks at the Washington Post (who ok’d this travesty) and at Catholics for Choice could do with some prayers.” (For more from the author of “‘Catholics for Choice’ Isn’t Catholic and Neither Is Its Disgusting Message” please click HERE)

Catholic Hospital System to Provide Contraceptives in Walgreens Partnership

A Catholic hospital system has confirmed that it will provide contraceptives as part of its partnership with Walgreens, in violation of the American Catholic bishops’ directives. SSM Health describes itself as “a Catholic, not-for-profit health system,” and in its mission statement says that through its work, “we reveal the healing presence of God.”

Nevertheless, on August 25, SSM Health announced it would provide clinics in 26 Walgreens locations in the St. Louis, Missouri, area, and maintain their provision of contraceptives. A spokesperson for SSM Health told The Stream that “SSM Health continues to offer the same services that were previously available at Walgreens Healthcare Clinics” — services that have included selling and giving prescriptions for contraceptives. Walgreens’ national website notes that the chain sells condoms and a wide variety of birth control products.

A SSM Health press release likewise claimed thir new clinics would provide all previously offered services, though it did not mention providing contraceptives. The day after the partnership became official, a SSM Health spokesperson told The Associated Press (AP) the Walgreens clinics

will provide 30-day refills for contraceptive pills previously prescribed by a physician — the same policy carried by the clinics previously run in-house by Walgreens. A website for the clinics shows a long list of services, everything from vaccinations and wellness checkups to treatment for illness and injury, but it makes no reference to birth control.

The Catholic Bishops’ directive states that “Catholic health institutions may not promote or condone contraceptive practices but should provide, for married couples and the medical staff who counsel them, instruction both about the Church’s teaching on responsible parenthood and in methods of natural family planning.”

The ACLU Wants Answers

Before the partnership was formally announced, the ACLU had written Walgreens’ Chief Medical Officer. The liberal group — which has long pressured Catholic health institutions to provide contraceptives, abortifacients and abortions against the bishops’ health directives — asked how SSM-run clinics would provide care and treatment for women seeking birth control and how clinic employees would treat LGBT patients and customers. A spokesperson for the ACLU declined The Stream’s request for comment.

Through its spokesperson’s statement to The Stream, SSM Health addressed the ACLU’s concerns about treatment of LGBT customers. “SSM Health is proud to treat every patient with dignity and respect. This commitment to inclusivity, justice and equality defines who we are as a Mission-and values-driven organization. In fact, we have been recognized as a Leader in LGBT Healthcare Equality by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation.”

SSM received the award in 2014. According to a press release the company issued at the time,

Facilities awarded this title meet key criteria, including patient and employee non-discrimination policies that specifically mention sexual orientation and gender identity, a guarantee of equal visitation for same-sex partners and parents, and LGBT health education for key staff members.

Despite the provision of morally problematic products, the ACLU and the groups that signed its letter said they still want to meet with Walgreens and SSM. A Walgreens spokesperson told AP that the ACLU’s letter included attempted to address some “services that are not applicable to a retail health care clinic setting, regardless of the provider.” (For more from the author of “Catholic Hospital System to Provide Contraceptives in Walgreens Partnership” please click HERE)
