Congressman Becomes the 31st Democrat to Announce His Retirement Ahead of 2022 Midterms

Democratic Florida Rep. Ted Deutch announced Monday that he will not seek re-election, making him the 31st Democrat to announce they would be retiring ahead of the 2022 midterm elections.

Deutch is leaving Congress to take on a job in a senior leadership position with the American Jewish Committee, CBS Miami first reported. The American Jewish Committee “is the leading global Jewish advocacy organization. From city halls to Capitol Hill, at the UN and in world capitals, AJC works to impact policy and opinion on some of the most important issues facing the Jewish people,” its website states.

“After serving the public for more than 15 years, I have decided I will not seek re-election this November. Public service was instilled in me by my father who earned a Purple Heart in the Battle of the Bulge, and it has been a tremendous privilege to serve the people of Palm Beach and Broward Counties in Congress since 2010. I am incredibly grateful to my constituents for their support and friendship,” Deutch said in a statement. Is Capitol Police Spying on Certain Folks Who Meet With Members of Congress?

You might want to rethink your next visit to Congress. If meeting with your local representatives is your thing, have at it. This isn’t a life-or-death warning. You won’t be black bagged by some secret police unit. If you work there or need to meet with members of Congress often, then you have no choice. You’re just going to have to deal with what the Capitol Police is reportedly doing to some folks who meet their lawmakers.

After the January 6 riot, the Capitol Police’s intelligence unit is perusing the social media activity of some guests and doing what appears to be soft background checks. For those who are civil liberties-minded, this might be problematic. Granted, the Capitol Police say they’re only looking at information that’s already public akin to what journalists do when researching a story, but the practice has raised some eyebrows. Congressional staffers are also put under the microscope. Is it creepy? Is it the norm now? whatever its intention, there’s no doubt that it will have a chilling effect on normal Americans who want to meet with their representatives to air out grievances or just outright meet who is looking out for their interests (supposedly) on Capitol Hill. Even members of Capitol Police have voiced their concerns (via Politico):

After the Jan. 6 insurrection, the Capitol Police’s intelligence unit quietly started scrutinizing the backgrounds of people who meet with lawmakers, according to three people familiar with the matter.

POLITICO also viewed written communications describing the new approach, part of a host of changes that the department implemented after the Capitol attack. Examining the social media feeds of people who aren’t suspected of crimes, however, is a controversial move for law enforcement and intelligence officials given the civil liberties concerns it raises.

Biden Wants To Prosecute Trump Loyalists Defying Congressional Subpoenas

President Joe Biden said Friday he believed the Justice Department should prosecute individuals defying Congressional subpoenas to testify to the January 6th select committee.

Biden was questioned by reporters about individuals such as Steve Bannon who defied the subpoena, citing former President Donald Trump’s executive privilege.

Biden said he wanted to see Trump loyalists prosecuted if they refused to appear before the committee to investigate Trump supporters who stormed Capitol Hill on January 6th.

“I hope that the committee goes after them and holds them accountable,” Biden said. (Read more from “Biden Wants To Prosecute Trump Loyalists Defying Congressional Subpoenas” HERE)

Black Reparations Is About To Be A Debate Topic On The Hill

We’re about to have a discussion about something that’s been on the minds of the far left for years: black reparations. In the spirit of unity, we’re going to punish whole swaths of people for the sin of slavery for which they bear zero responsibility. Does anyone see this becoming a racial trainwreck? I do. I can see this coming from 1,000 miles away. Slavery is dead. The people who owned slaves in America when it was legal are LONG dead. The current folks living now have zero part in that heinous system of oppression but make them foot the bill because…feelings. If you want disunity, then debate this topic and waste everyone’s time. Congress has become a hall of theatrics and not governing. This is a prime example. It was introduced by Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX). This is the furthest such a proposal has gone in Congress—but it’ll likely not pass. That’s not the point, however. We’re getting a window into the world Democrats want to create if they get the legislative majorities to do so (via WaPo):

A House committee on Wednesday approved legislation to create a commission to make recommendations on paying reparations to the descendants of enslaved people, the furthest the bill has advanced since it was first introduced more than 30 years ago.

As expected, the vote broke on party lines, 25 to 17.

Dem Accuses Congressional Colleagues of Giving Rioters Tours of U.S. Capitol

It looks like Congress may end up with a new member or two because of last week’s violence, in which protesters broke into the U.S. Capitol and vandalized it.

The new situation has developed because, according to a report from Politico, Rep. Mikie Sherrill, D-N.J., has accused colleagues in Congress of escorting people through the Capitol on January 5 for “reconnaissance” before the next day’s riot.

It charges criminal behavior on the part of other members of Congress, according to a video statement she posted online.

She said, in the video, “I also intend to see that those members of Congress who abetted him — those members of Congress who had groups coming through the capitol that I saw on Jan. 5 for reconnaissance for the next day — those members of Congress who incited the violent crowd, those members of Congress that attempted to help our president undermine our democracy, I’m going see that they’re held accountable.”

She declined, however, to identify the legislators. Nor would she explain how she determined those activities were “reconnaissance.” (Read more from “Dem Accuses Congressional Colleagues of Giving Rioters Tours of U.S. Capitol” HERE)

‘Insane’: Donald Trump Jr. Blasts House Democrats’ Prayer That Ended With ‘a-Woman’

By Washington Times. Donald Trump Jr. weighed in Monday on House Democrats’ “amen and a-woman” prayer, calling it “insane.”

Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, Missouri Democrat, delivered Sunday the opening prayer of the 117th Congress, ending it with the traditional “amen” and then tacking on “a-woman,” drawing rebukes from stunned Republicans and others.

“Amen means ‘So Be It’ in Latin,” tweeted the president’s eldest son. “It isn’t a gendered word but that didn’t stop them from being insane. Is this what you voted for?”

By The Federalist. House Democratic Rep. Emanuel Cleaver of Missouri ended the opening prayer for the 117th Congress Sunday with “amen and a-woman,” in an apparent effort to be gender- and deity-inclusive while omitting “aperson.”

The term “amen” is not even a reference to the two sexes, however, as Pennsylvania Republican Congressman Guy Reschenthaler pointed out on Twitter along with a clip of the pointless passive-progressive virtue signaling.

Cleaver, an ordained United Methodist pastor who appears clueless about basic biblical knowledge such as the meaning of the Hebrew word “amen,” offered the House prayer as Democrats in the lower chamber have prioritized removing references to the two sexes in House business in an effort to “promote inclusion and diversity.”

In Deciding the 2020 Election, Congress Will Get the Last Word

The Senate and House will meet in a joint session on Jan. 6, a day the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg labeled the date of “ultimate significance” in our electoral process, to count the recently cast electoral votes. What happens that day will determine the outcome of the presidential election. . .

The Electoral Count Act provides that after the electors in each state and the District of Columbia vote on Dec. 14, they must sign a certificate of their votes that is then sealed and sent to the president of the Senate.

At 1:00 p.m. on Jan. 6, a joint session of Congress convenes, at which the presiding officer opens the states’ certificates in alphabetical order. Each certificate is then presented to “tellers” who read the votes aloud, after which the presiding officer invites objections.

Under the law, objections must be presented in writing and signed by at least one senator and one representative. When a properly made objection is received, the separate houses retreat to their respective chambers for two hours of debate and a vote on whether to count the votes in question.

The chambers must vote separately on each objection. If a majority in each supports the objection, the votes in question are excluded. If the objection garners the support of less than a majority in either chamber, it fails, and the challenged votes are counted. New Stimulus Deal Before Election Day Looks Increasingly Unlikely

Congress has one more chance to get a stimulus bill done before the election. . .

The Grand Canyon-like gap between the two parties on how to address the struggling economy has persisted for months. Only this time, the election is just 39 days away and a fierce partisan battle over a Supreme Court vacancy is consuming nearly all of the oxygen in the halls of Congress—exacerbating the realistic chances that an agreement is reached.

House Democrats are attempting to revive the lifeless pandemic relief talks by crafting a $2.4 trillion package. It’s $200 billion more than what House Peaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) have previously demanded, which has already been rejected by Senate Republicans and the White House.

The White House, and especially GOP lawmakers, remain opposed to such a high price tag, which Pelosi increased by $200 billion for additional aid for airlines and restaurants. Republicans could potentially entertain somewhere around $1.5 trillion, Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin as suggested, who testified on Capitol Hill this week that more relief is direly needed. Republicans Introduce Resolution to Change Senate Rules in Order to Dismiss Articles of Impeachment

By The Blaze. Republicans in the U.S. Senate introduced a resolution that would change the congressional rules in order to allow them to dismiss articles of impeachment that are not sent for a trial in the Senate.

Republican Sen. Josh Hawley (Mo.) defended the resolution in a statement on Monday, saying that the founders did not envision the eventuality of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) refusing to send articles of impeachment to the Senate.

“The Constitution gives the Senate sole power to adjudicate articles of impeachment, not the House,” Hawley said in the statement.

“If Speaker Pelosi is afraid to try her case, the articles should be dismissed for failure to prosecute and Congress should get back to doing the people’s business,” he added.

The resolution would allow for 25 days for the House to send articles to the Senate after an impeachment vote. (Read more from “Republicans Introduce Resolution to Change Senate Rules in Order to Dismiss Articles of Impeachment” HERE)

GOP Senators Introduce Resolution to Change Rules, Dismiss Impeachment Without Articles

By The Hill. Roughly a dozen GOP senators want to change the Senate’s rules and allow for lawmakers to dismiss articles of impeachment against President Trump before the House sends them over. . .

The resolution would give the House 25 days to send articles of impeachment over to the Senate. After that, a senator could offer a motion to dismiss “with prejudice for failure by the House of Representatives to prosecute such articles” with a simple majority vote, according to Hawley’s proposal.

The resolution comes as some Senate Republicans have mulled changing the chamber’s rules to allow them to dismiss the impeachment charges against Trump, even though the articles have not been sent over from the House.

Hawley’s resolution has support from GOP Sens. Rick Scott (Fla.), Mike Braun (Ind.), Marsha Blackburn (Tenn.), Ted Cruz (Texas), Steve Daines (Mont.), John Barrasso (Wyo.), Tom Cotton (Ark.), Joni Ernst (Iowa), David Perdue (Ga.) and James Inhofe (Okla.).

“Speaker Pelosi and House Democrats have made a mockery of our Constitution and abused impeachment for political gain. Now, they’re undermining the role of the Senate by attempting to dictate the terms of the Senate’s trial,” Cruz said in a statement. Leftist Charged After Threatening to Kill GOP Congressman

A crazy liberal called the congressional office of Rep. Rodney Davis (R-IL) a few weeks ago and threatened to kill the GOP representative, court documents reveal.

The caller left a voicemail for the congressman identifying himself only as a “sharpshooter” who would “like to shoot your f****** head off you stupid mother******.”

The nameless caller accused Rep. Davis of “backing the Russians.” Surely, Hillary Clinton was the prime suspect until Capitol Police were able to trace the call back to 64-year-old Randall Tarr of Illinois.

Tarr told FBI agents that he called the Republican congressman after watching a TV commercial about Rep. Davis that made him very, very angry. Tarr denied being under the influence of drugs and alcohol when he made the call, but it is likely the man was under the influence of either CNN or MSNBC.
