The Latest Leftist Response to Coronavirus? Open up the Jails

You might want to stay locked in your home for the foreseeable future, but not necessarily because of health concerns.

It seems that the Left’s answer to every public policy crisis is more welfare spending and more immigration. We certainly see that in the coronavirus response. Now leftists are adding a third leg to the stool: jailbreak.

In their determination never to let a crisis go to waste in order to enact long-standing policy wishes, politicians and judges are considering releasing prisoners from prison. Cuyahoga County, Ohio, has already released hundreds of prisoners. “You gotta remember, the goal of this is to protect the community and the safety of the inmates. If someone’s a serious violent person, well, we’re using our discretion to make sure the community’s safe also,” said Cuyahoga County Administrative Judge Brendan Sheehan.

Bill Ward, Minnesota’s top public defender, sent out an email on Friday urging his staff to advocate release on behalf of their clients on grounds that coronavirus will be spread more rapidly through incarceration.

Activists are calling for this in New York, Chicago, and many other places. The ACLU has already filed a lawsuit to mimic this policy on the federal level, demanding that ICE release illegal aliens they believe are at risk to contract the virus. Never mind that if the ACLU were really concerned about the spread of the virus, it would support policies to expedite the removal of illegal immigrants so that they don’t remain in ICE custody and are returned to their home countries.

The concern of coronavirus spreading in jail more than in the general public is absurd. If anything, this is the most protected population, because each individual is under control of the government and anyone sick has already been quarantined and screened, which is why there is no record of an inmate epidemic during previous viral outbreaks in recent years. What some in government essentially want to do to the rest of us has already happened with prisoners. They are locked up and nobody is allowed to visit. This national clamor for jailbreak is nothing but push to enact one of the Left’s top-priority policies and use a health crisis to do so, the same way Democrats are using the virus to push their policies of expanded food stamps and Medicaid.

Now more than ever, with businesses closing up and people off the streets, there is a danger of criminals ravaging the streets and stealing goods. Of course, advocates are couching their idea in terms of “low level, nonviolent offenders,” but we all know what that means according to their dictionary. While economic activity will shut down, criminals will ramp up their activities. As we all know, they don’t exactly abide by ordinances and guidelines.

This idea is gaining steam, and it will make every American city like New York, which experienced a 22.5% increase in major crime in February following the enactment of a new law abolishing bail for those who were supposed to be “low-level” criminals.

You have to give the Left credit for its indefatigable approach to public policy. Leftists have an inexorable quest for numerous policy changes, and they are fully prepared to use a crisis to promote each one. Yet Republicans aren’t even pushing policy changes on borders, travel, and visas, which speak directly to the source of this outbreak. It Took Coronavirus and the Ohio Governor to Finally Push Back Against a Judge

The Constitution is not a suicide pact, much less a single judge’s convoluted reading of it. This is something every elected official needs to understand, but it took a public health crisis and a moderate Republican governor in Ohio to finally demonstrate this point.

Yesterday, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, R, made a commonsense call to delay the state’s primary election scheduled for today. Obviously, if we are at the point where all gatherings of more than 50 people are banned, and schools and restaurants as well as many workplaces are closed, it makes no sense to have statewide elections.

However, shortly before 7 p.m., Franklin County Common Pleas Judge Richard A. Frye ruled that the election should continue as scheduled pursuant to state law. Much to the shock of political observers, roughly two hours later, Gov. DeWine announced that election would be pushed off anyway.

“During this time when we face an unprecedented public health crisis, to conduct an election tomorrow would force poll workers and voters to place themselves at a unacceptable health risk of contracting coronavirus,” read a statement from the governor posted at 10:12 pm. “As such, Health Director Dr. Amy Acton will order the polls closed as a health emergency.”

Many commentators and politicians in Ohio were aghast at the governor’s move and called it a “constitutional crisis.”

The outrage on social media was rooted in the premise that judges alone get to decide with finality political questions affecting the whole of the people – either of the country or the state. The reality is that we have three branches of government at the state and federal levels, and there will be times when they disagree and can use their respective powers to push back against each other. The three branches are not a food chain with the judiciary on top; they are a circle of co-equal powers.

The legislature was fully empowered to meet in an emergency session and push back against the governor if the members chose to do so. They declined to push back. Ultimately, a few hours later, the state’s supreme court sided with the governor anyway.

There is a broader lesson here of utmost importance. We are all seeing throughout the country the display of extraordinary powers of even local officials, and certainly the president, during a time of a public health crisis. Ultimately, the courts are one avenue for individuals to redress grievances concerning their individual liberties, but courts do not govern for the whole of the people and most certainly do not have the final say on broad public policy. We must hold all branches of state and federal government accountable, and they must hold each other accountable.

It’s self-evident in Ohio that given the state of affairs in the country now, holding elections would make the state’s election law into a suicide pact. It’s time we learn to apply this on the national level, for immigration policy where absolutely no constitutional rights are implicated.

We allowed the illegal ruling of a single California judge in July 2018 to spawn a massive influx of at least 1 million (known) illegal aliens with cascading effects of drugs, crime, public charge, and yes, a public health crisis at our border. Yet our government refused to turn them back to Mexico until a full year into the crisis. But when it comes to restricting the freedoms of Americans, notice how we are not letting a judge or anyone else stop what elected officials deem necessary for the public interest.

As I’ve noted before, Justice Robert Jackson, who was a champion of individual rights and due process (he authored the dissent in the Japanese internment case), understood that “accepting the doctrine that civil liberty means the removal of all restraints to maintain order” would harm freedom “in the long run.” He famously warned in a case dealing with someone who was inciting riots that “there is danger that, if the Court does not temper its doctrinaire logic with a little practical wisdom, it will convert the constitutional Bill of Rights into a suicide pact.”

Obviously, there are limits to striking the right balance between liberty, order, and public safety. We really need to watch vigilantly to ensure that prudent “social distancing” doesn’t turn into downright home confinement, as we are witnessing in countries like Spain. But certainly, delaying a primary election was the right call given the circumstances, despite the law on the books governing the election date.

And how much more is it the right call when a single judge actually violates the law and Supreme Court precedent to attempt to strip the president of his power to keep aliens out of the country in the national interest!

If nothing else, as all layers of government are severely restricting movement and real rights of Americans, we should appreciate the power of the president to keep out foreign nationals when there is absolutely no right to enter our country. This is especially salient given the fact that this crisis, which is now engendering draconian restrictions on citizen rights, was born out of an unwillingness to shut off travel and visas when we could easily have flattened the curve early on. Have They Found a Cure for the Coronavirus? Australian Researchers Claim Two Existing Drugs Could ‘Cure’ COVID-19; First Person Injected With Trial Coronavirus Vaccine in Seattle

By Daily Mail. Drugs used to treat HIV and malaria could be used to tackle the coronavirus, according to scientists in Australia.

A team of infectious disease experts at the University of Queensland in Brisbane say they have seen two existing medications manage to wipe out COVID-19 infections.

Chloroquine, an anti-malarial drug, and HIV-suppressing combination lopinavir/ritonavir have both reportedly shown promising results in human tests and made the virus ‘disappear’ in infected patients.

The drugs are being tested as researchers and doctors around the world scramble to try and find a vaccine, cure or treatment for the deadly virus. . .

Professor Paterson said it wouldn’t be wrong to consider the drugs a possible ‘treatment or cure’ for the deadly respiratory infection. (Read more from “Have They Found a Cure for the Coronavirus? Australian Researchers Claim Two Existing Drugs Could ‘Cure’ COVID-19” HERE)

First Person Injected With Trial Coronavirus Vaccine in Seattle

By Forbes. A new phase 1 clinical trial of a potential vaccine for the SARS-CoV2 coronavirus began on Monday in Seattle, as the first person to enroll in the trial received the vaccine.

The vaccine, mRNA-1273, was developed by biotechnology company Moderna in combination with researchers from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The trial is being conducted at Kaiser Permanente Washington Health Research Institute in Seattle.

The phase 1 study aims to test three different doses of the mRNA-1273 vaccine ad hopes to recruit 45 healthy adults for the initial trial. Participants will receive two shots of the vaccine, 28 days apart and will be monitored to evaluate both the safety and immunogenicity of the vaccine. The latter involves seeing how well the vaccine stimulates an immune response to a protein on the SARS-CoV2 coronavirus surface.

The first person to get the vaccine was 43-year old Jennifer Haller from Seattle who said; “I hope that we get to a working vaccine quickly and that we can save lives and people can go back to life as soon as possible,” in an interview with TIME.

“This study is the first step in the clinical development of an mRNA vaccine against SARS-CoV-2, and we expect it to provide important information about safety and immunogenicity,” said Tal Zaks, M.D., Ph.D., Chief Medical Officer at Moderna in a press release. He added that Moderna is already working with the FDA and other organizations to prepare for a phase 2 trial, which would involve larger numbers of patients. U.S. Nurse Recounts Her Experience With Coronavirus; One of Two New Kentucky Coronavirus Cases Refused to Self-Isolate. He’s Being Forced.

Colorado Nurse Recounts Her Harrowing Experience With Coronavirus: ‘It’s Nothing Like I Expected’

By The Blaze. A Colorado nurse who contracted the coronavirus after attending a medical conference in Hawaii is speaking out about her harrowing experience.

Lisa Merck of Crested Butte told KDVR-TV in a recent interview — taken from her home because she is still under quarantine — that her bout with coronavirus began with the “sniffles” at the end of a three-week trip to Hawaii with her husband. . .

“We got back and my muscles ached, my bones ached and my joints ached really bad. It felt like someone was stabbing me with an ice pick and I was like, ‘I wonder if I have the flu,'” she explained. “Finally, on Sunday night, I told my husband, ‘I need you take me to the ER. I don’t feel very good, and I feel like whenever I stand up I want to collapse.'”

Despite returning a negative flu test, the CDC and her local health clinic initially told Merck that she did not meet criteria for coronavirus testing.

Then, finally, she tested positive for COVID-19 last week. (Read more from “Colorado Nurse Recounts Her Harrowing Experience With Coronavirus: ‘It’s Nothing Like I Expected'” HERE)

One of Two New Kentucky Coronavirus Cases Refused to Self-Isolate. He’s Being Forced.

By Lexington Herald Leader. The number of confirmed cases of novel coronavirus increased by four Saturday in Kentucky, Gov. Andy Beshear announced, including a patient in Nelson county who has been forced into home isolation after refusing to self-isolate. The total number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Kentucky is now 18.

Beshear also told all hospitals in the state to stop performing any elective procedures by the close of business Wednesday and told all child care centers to plan for closure on short notice, possibly within 72 hours. . .

The patient from Nelson County is a 53-year-old man who tested positive at the University of Louisville, then left against medical advice, Beshear said. The Lincoln Trail District Health Department asked him to self-quarantine, but he refused.

A law enforcement officer has been posted outside the man’s home, Beshear said.

“It’s a step I hoped I’d never have to take, but we can’t allow one person who we know has the virus to refuse to protect their neighbors,” Beshear said. (Read more from “One of Two New Kentucky Coronavirus Cases Refused to Self-Isolate. He’s Being Forced.” HERE)

Don’t Self Isolate Alone: Animal Shelter Encourages Fostering a Pet During Coronavirus Pandemic; San Francisco Residents Required to Stay Home Amid Coronavirus Pandemic

By People. Americans are being told to stay at home and avoid gatherings of people in an effort to prevent the further spread of COVID-19.

Social distancing is an important step to curbing the coronavirus pandemic, but you don’t have to do it totally alone.

“If you don’t have a pet and are thinking about getting one, now is the perfect time to ‘try it on’ by fostering from your local shelter. Shelters and pet adoption facilities nationwide need people to foster pets on a temporary basis,” Julie Castle the CEO of Best Friends Animal Society, told PEOPLE about how they can help rescue pets and themselves during the coronavirus pandemic.

The Centers for Disease Control, the World Health Organization, and the American Veterinary Medical Association have all stated that pets are not at risk of spreading COVID-19, and science has shown time and time again that adding an animal to your life makes your happier and healthier. . .

“Animal shelters across the country are having to deal with an increase of dogs and cats in need of homes because fewer people are visiting shelters right now, and in some cases, shelters are having to temporarily close to the public,” Castle added. “Some animal shelters are already seeing an increase in intake, and many are bracing themselves for the possibility of fewer adoptions and fewer foster homes, and are concerned about limited space.” (Read more from “Don’t Self Isolate Alone: Animal Shelter Encourages Fostering a Pet During Coronavirus Pandemic” HERE)

Taco Bell Prepares to Go ‘Drive-Thru and Delivery Only’ Amid Coronavirus Outbreak; Oregon Distillery Giving Away Free Hand Sanitizer

By Fox News. Taco Bell doesn’t plan to close during the coronavirus pandemic, but restaurant dining rooms may soon be off-limits.

The fast-food chain recently announced that it’s taking steps to close dining areas, operating only through drive-thru and delivery options.

Mark King, CEO of Taco Bell Corp., posted a letter Saturday stating that the company has “an obligation to do something to help stop this from spreading.”

Taco Bell has been doing more to clean its restaurants, but King said additional action must be taken.

“As regions of the U.S. begin to mandate public closures and self-quarantine, we are equipping our restaurants to serve our guests via drive-thru and delivery only where necessary,” he wrote. “ Should we need to  temporarily close  our dining rooms, we would be limiting millions of guest interactions and further enabling social distancing.” (Read more from “Taco Bell Prepares to Go ‘Drive-Thru and Delivery Only’ Amid Coronavirus Outbreak” HERE)

Dr. Fauci Issues Coronavirus Warning: American Public Is Not Doing Enough ‘Social Distancing’; As Coronavirus Spreads, Democrats Respond by Trying to End Trump’s Travel Ban

By Red State. Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases is cautioning Americans on the importance of social distancing during the ongoing coronavirus outbreak. On Sunday, he indicated that the American public is not doing enough to decrease the likelihood that more people become infected by the disease.

In an appearance on NBC’s “Meet The Press,” he asserted that he would rather be seen as “overreacting” than to see more people become infected by the virus. “I would prefer as much [of a shut down] as we possibly could,” he said. “I think we should really be overly aggressive and get criticized for overreacting.”

He continued, pointing out that many Americans are still engaging with large crowds of people despite the warnings from the experts. “I think Americans should be prepared that they’re gonna have to hunker down significantly more than we as a country are doing,” he advised.

The director noted that many are still going to participate in events with large crowds of people. “You’re gonna have people who are going to go to restaurants anyway. But for the most part, and particularly, if I can say this, this is particularly appropriate and relevant for people at the higher risk. The elderly and those who have underlying conditions right now should really hunker down,” he said.

It appears that Fauci is correct in his assessment that a significant number of Americans are not taking social distancing seriously. CBS Boston reported that despite a ban on “gatherings of more than 250 people,” people were still going to crowded bars and restaurants. “For us, it’s not as much of a concern,” said one South Boston resident. “But yeah, some people out here might be underplaying [the coronavirus].” (Read more from “Dr. Fauci Issues Coronavirus Warning: American Public Is Not Doing Enough ‘Social Distancing’” HERE)

Spanish Nurse Details Horrific Conditions at Country’s Hospitals; Europe Hunkers Down for War Against Coronavirus

By The Blaze. A Spanish nurse says that going to work on a daily basis and fighting COVID-19 is like going to war.

According to Business Insider, nurse Coral Merino said that COVID-19 patients are dying lonely deaths alone and away from their families. Health authorities said Saturday, according to a CNBC report, that coronavirus infections have reached 5,753 people, half of them in Madrid, since the first case was detected in Spain in late January. . .

Merino, an ER nurse at Principe de Asturias University Hospital in Alcala de Henares, added that health care providers are also at risk, because there isn’t enough personal protection wear to go around.

“These are hard times for all professionals, but especially for us,” she admitted. “We’re constantly in close contact with patients. … There simply aren’t enough masks to change them each time we go to see an isolated patient. There are no proper gowns. We just have to make do with porous ones and put plastic aprons over them.” . . .

Merino, who has been a nurse since 2011, added, “We’re reusing the goggles other colleagues have used, washing and disinfecting them ourselves.” (Read more from “Spanish Nurse Details Horrific Conditions at Country’s Hospitals” HERE)

Europe Hunkers Down for War Against Coronavirus

By Politico. . .EU leaders on Monday imposed a new wave of drastic measures aimed at slowing the spread of the coronavirus that has infected more than 180,000 people worldwide, killed more than 7,000 and is now threatening to overwhelm health systems in the richest, most-advanced countries on Earth.

“We are at war,” French President Emmanuel Macron declared in a televised speech to his nation, in which he announced a 15-day lockdown that would permit only the most essential movements, beginning at noon on Tuesday.

“It is of course a sanitary war,” Macron said. “We are not fighting against an army, or another nation. But the enemy is here. It is invisible, elusive and it is progressing. And this requires our general mobilization.”

Macron’s speech was just one of many remarkable public appearances on Monday by world leaders who rolled out unprecedented measures to fight the microscopic enemy.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, appearing at a news conference in Berlin, said Germany would take “radical” steps including a ban on all travel “domestically or abroad” except for urgent work trips. She said bars, theaters, museums, cinemas and non-essential shops would be closed. (Read more from “Europe Hunkers Down for War Against Coronavirus” HERE)

Ohio Department of Health to Postpone Presidential Primary

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine (R) said late Monday night that his state will be postponing its presidential primaries that were slated for Tuesday due to concerns over the Wuhan coronavirus. Ohio’s Department of Health Director, Dr. Amy Acton, will declare a health emergency, forcing the polls to stay closed. A new date has yet to be scheduled.

The announcement was made after Common Pleas Court Judge Richard Frye declined to reschedule the primary. According to Frye, it would set a “terrible precedent” for a judge to make that kind of call hours before an election was set to begin, The Hill reported.

Both DeWine and Secretary of State Frank LaRose cited concerns over the potential spread of the Wuhan coronavirus.

As Ordinary Citizen Life Grinds to Halt, Government Still Flying in Refugees From Around the World

Just how much of a religion is open-borders immigration? Evidently refugee resettlement from around the world, at least as of last week, was continuing.

The great American shutdown has grown so severe that in my community, all funerals have been canceled. Graveside funerals are the only way to burry our dead. New Jersey has already instituted a curfew with business closures at 8:00 p.m. One would think that shutting off international travel and immigration – the very first line of defense that directly addresses the source of importing diseases – would have long been shut down before we begin infringing upon domestic liberties. Not so. If this country shuts down completely, mass migration will continue, at least on some level.

It’s now self-evident that had we shut off international travel earlier and had we suspended all immigration, visas, and travel from China and Iran in December, this problem would be much more manageable. Yet, in Orwellian fashion, it looks like elements of immigration might be the last activity standing in this county. Ann Corcoran of the Refugee Resettlement Blog observes today that, at least as of last week, the State Department was bringing in refugees at the same clip as before and the Office of Refugee Resettlement was still settling them in our communities.

According to Corcoran, 1,768 refugees arrived in the U.S. between February 15 and yesterday. She noted that 488 have arrived even over the last seven days; 109 were brought in on Thursday. Those numbers might not sound like a lot, but remember Trump had already curtailed the numbers in general. One has to wonder if we’d continue the normal pace had Trump not reduced the numbers for other reasons. The existing pace has not slowed down at all.

A search of the State Department database shows the following countries as the largest sources of refugees over the past 30 days: Congo (728) followed by Ukraine (278), Burma(136), Iraq, (130) and Pakistan (50).

Shockingly, Washington state is the second most common destination of resettlement over the past month. That is the hardest-hit state by coronavirus, accounting for nearly two-thirds of the national fatalities from the virus.

Even if the government is more carefully screening refugees for health concerns, why would we strain our services and create a logistical problem to bring in more immigrants at a time when we are shutting down many aspects of ordinary life for Americans?

“Consider that right now we are bringing in the largest numbers of refugees being processed through Ukraine and through Malaysia, which has seen a recent spike in coronavirus cases,” said Corcoran in an interview with CR. “Those refugees, including the large numbers coming in through Africa, are traveling through airports on three continents. American volunteers working for resettlement agencies are then contractually required to meet the arriving refugees in airports across the country and take them to their new apartment, thus exposing even more Americans to possible contact with the COVID-19 virus. Seems insane to me as the government is telling us to put our lives on hold and stay home.”

As Corcoran pointed out in her blog post, Malaysia is one of the largest processing countries for the refugees we admit from Burma and other countries. Just this Sunday, there were nearly 200 more coronavirus cases reported after 16,000 people congregated in a mosque near Kuala Lumpur.

It’s also shocking how one of the biggest sources of refugee resettlement over the past year is Congo, a country that only this week finally shut down the deadly Ebola outbreak.

Meanwhile, as of last week, we were still processing asylum claims at our border, including for Chinese nationals, rather than turning them around. One has to wonder if, absent the Supreme Court stay on the Ninth Circuit’s order to bring in caravans, the DHS would blithely have brought them in.

Orwell could not have written a script like this.

It appears that the religion of open borders is contagious throughout the world. Evidently, according to the Jerusalem Post, Germany didn’t suspend flights even from hard-hit Iran until today, after the public voiced outrage! Ezra Levant, the head of Rebel News in Canada, has been tracking flights in real time still arriving in Vancouver from China itself! Finally, in this eleventh hour, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has shut off travel – several months too late.

It is self-evident that with any “coronavirus response” from Congress, we need legislation requiring the president to immediately shut off all travel and visas from other countries as soon as our government is aware of a contagious and deadly outbreak. We should also suspend all elective immigration, such as refugee and asylum, from any country until the epidemic has subsided.

In early January, I called for a suspension of all travel from countries with coronavirus cases. I often saw responses on Twitter suggesting that such action would be too disruptive. Well, now we are going to learn the hard way what real disruption looks like. Meanwhile, refugee and asylum immigration might never be disrupted.
