2020’s Big Winners: Billionaires, Silicon Valley Tech Lords, and Communist China

The coronavirus pandemic took nearly two million lives worldwide and caused unprecedented economic devastation this year, but 2020 had at least three big winners who came out stronger in spite of – or perhaps because of – the pandemic: the world’s billionaires, Silicon Valley’s tech lords, and communist China, where the virus originated. . .

China’s communist regime is sounding increasingly triumphalist in the wake of the economic destruction wreaked by the pandemic that originated in Wuhan and could have been prevented by Beijing. China’s communist dictator Xi Jinping boasted in his New Year’s Eve address that China is “the first major economy worldwide to achieve positive growth” in 2020, while the rest of the world’s economy shrank. . .

Never was the old cliché that “the rich get richer” truer than in 2020. The wealth of the world’s super-rich broke new records this year, according to a report conducted by PwC and the Swiss bank UBC. The combined wealth of the world’s over 6,000 billionaires grew to $10.2 trillion in July, blowing past the previous record of $8.9 trillion in 2017. And the number of new billionaires also grew from 2,158 in 2017 to 2,189 in 2020. All of this happened at the height of the pandemic between April and July 2020, as average people the world over were hit by economic devastation, but the world’s billionaires increased their wealth by over a quarter to 27.5 percent, the Guardian reports.

In 2020, America’s 614 billionaires increased their collective net worth by $931 billion, even as tens of millions of Americans lost their jobs. Between just March and May alone, the net wealth of these American billionaires increased by 15 percent, as over 36 million Americans were joblessness due to the pandemic. In contrast, the U.S. poverty rate rose to 11.7 percent in November, a jump of 2.4 percent since June, marking the highest single year increase since the government began tracking poverty 60 years ago. . .

Of all the monopolistic billionaires blessed by the pandemic, perhaps none have come out as victorious as the tech lords of Silicon Valley. Not only did they increase their massive wealth and monopoly power during the pandemic, they also helped get their preferred candidate elected to the White House. Restaurants Find Creative Ways to Survive Amid Restrictions

It’s been two weeks since Gov. Tom Wolf banned indoor dining and alcohol sales at restaurants statewide amid an alarming spike in COVID-19 hospitalizations.

And for many owners, abiding by the rules – devastating as they may be – remains a top priority, even if it challenges everything they know about running a successful business. . .

Elliot Alaya and her husband opened Home 231 in Harrisburg nine years ago. Revival Social Club in downtown York followed in 2017. The couple employs about 20 workers between the two locations and said keeping their staff paid required some creative thinking. . .

From Taco Tuesdays to virtual happy hours to online wine dinners, Elliot Alaya said adapting to the circumstances and keeping customers engaged has helped her restaurants weather multiple shut downs.

“We are going to make do one way or the other,” she said. “We are not going to rely on anybody else at this point, and we are just going to figure it out.” (Read more from “Restaurants Find Creative Ways to Survive Amid Restrictions” HERE)

Worker Caught Deliberately Destroying COVID Vaccines

A worker at a Wisconsin medical facility was fired for deliberately destroying over 500 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, a report said.

Aurora Medical Center said in a statement obtained by Fox6 that the worker at their Grafton location admitted Wednesday to intentionally removing 57 vials of Moderna’s coronavirus vaccine from a pharmacy refrigerator on Saturday.

“We are more than disappointed that this individual’s actions will result in a delay of more than 500 people receiving their vaccine,” the company said in its statement.

“This was a violation of our core values, and the individual is no longer employed by us.” (Read more from “Worker Caught Deliberately Destroying COVID Vaccines” HERE)

New Strain of COVID Found in California

California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Wednesday that the new, more easily transmissible strain of coronavirus found recently in the United Kingdom had also been discovered in California.

Newsom made the announcement during a discussion on Facebook Live with Dr. Anthony Fauci, Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

Fauci explained that while the new strain seemed to bind more easily to target cells, there was “no indication at all that it increases the virulence” of the disease, meaning that it would not make patients sicker or more susceptible to dying.

Moreover, he said, it seemed that the new strain would not re-infect people who had already had the old strain, and was not resistant to the vaccines that are being rolled out across the U.S.

The first known case of the new coronavirus strain was announced Tuesday in Colorado. (Read more from “New Strain of COVID Found in California” HERE)

Mom Arrested for Taking Children to Park During Coronavirus

An Idaho mother who was arrested in April after taking her children to the playground spoke with Breitbart News at Turning Point USA’s Student Action Summit in West Palm Beach, Florida, where she shared her story, saying draconian rules implemented in response to the Chinese coronavirus are pitting “good citizens against good officers.”

“It pits good citizens against good officers,” said Sara Brady of lockdown rules established in the wake of the Wuhan virus. “And sadly, what’s going to happen is — good officers are going to either have to make a choice to leave or they’re going to be fired for refusing to comply with an unconstitutional mandate.”

“And keep in mind, good officers are not making an oath to the constitution to go after good people,” Brady continued. “They want to go after the criminals. They want to do it for a righteous cause.”

“I think it’s done by design,” she added. “On purpose, to put our good men in law enforcement in these positions where good citizens are starting to be angry at them for the draconian measures that they’re putting on people.”

Brady — who is also married to a police officer — added that her husband is uncomfortable with the idea of arresting mothers for taking their children to the playground. (Read more from “Mom Arrested for Taking Children to Park During Coronavirus” HERE)

Massive Study: Asymptomatic Transmission of COVID-19 Didn’t Occur at All

A study of almost 10 million people in Wuhan, China, found that asymptomatic spread of COVID-19 did not occur at all, thus undermining the need for lockdowns, which are built on the premise of the virus being unwittingly spread by infectious, asymptomatic people.

Published in November in the scientific journal Nature Communications, the paper was compiled by 19 scientists, mainly from the Huazhong University of Science and Technology in Wuhan, but also from scientific institutions across China as well as in the U.K. and Australia. It focused on the residents of Wuhan, ground zero for COVID-19, where 9,899,828 people took part in a screening program between May 14 and June 1, which provided clear results as to the possibility of any asymptomatic transmission of the virus.

Asymptomatic transmission has been the underlying justification of lockdowns enforced all across the world. The most recent guidance from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) still states that the virus “can be spread by people who do not have symptoms.” In fact, the CDC claimed that asymptomatic people “are estimated to account for more than 50 percent of transmissions.” . . .

However, the new study in Nature Communications, titled “Post-lockdown SARS-CoV-2 nucleic acid screening in nearly 10 million residents of Wuhan, China,” debunked the concept of asymptomatic transmission.

It stated that out of the nearly 10 million people in the study, “300 asymptomatic cases” were found. Contact tracing was then carried out and of those 300, no cases of COVID-19 were detected in any of them. “A total of 1,174 close contacts of the asymptomatic positive cases were traced, and they all tested negative for the COVID-19.” (Read more from “Massive Study: Asymptomatic Transmission of COVID-19 Didn’t Occur at All” HERE)

Mitch McConnell Blocks $2,000 Stimulus Checks

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Tuesday blocked unanimous passage of the $2,000 COVID-19 stimulus checks requested by President Trump.

McConnell (R-Ky.) objected after Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) asked for a unanimous vote on a five-page bill that passed the House on Monday with 44 Republican votes.

Trump requested the $2,000 checks last week, saying the $600 checks approved as part of a $2.3 trillion pandemic relief and government funding bill was too small.

McConnell blocked unanimous passage after scheduling a Wednesday vote to override Trump’s veto of a $740 billion defense bill.

It’s unclear if enough Senate Democrats will rally behind an attempted filibuster, or if the override vote will proceed without McConnell agreeing to a deal on $2,000 checks. (Read more from “Mitch McConnell Blocks $2,000 Stimulus Checks” HERE)

This Common Sleep Aide May Prevent Coronavirus

Researchers are finding new possibilities an over-the-counter supplement – melatonin – best known as sleep aid.

Scientists at the Cleveland Clinic have discovered it’s a potential way to help prevent or treat COVID-19.

Lead researcher Dr. Feixiong Cheng, Ph.D., and his team used artificial intelligence to comb through a COVID-19 registry at the Cleveland Clinic, which included nearly 27,000 people. They found people who take melatonin are nearly 28% less likely to test positive for COVID.

The difference is even more significant for African Americans – the study said, “Importantly, melatonin usage is associated with a 52% reduced likelihood of a positive laboratory test result for SARS-CoV-2 in African Americans.” (Read more from “This Common Sleep Aide May Prevent Coronavirus” HERE)

Louisiana Congressman-Elect Dead From COVID

Louisiana Rep.-elect Luke Letlow died on Tuesday night from complications related to the coronavirus. He was 41.

A family friend confirmed to the Monroe News-Star that Letlow died in the intensive care unit at Ochsner LSU Health in Shreveport, where he had been hospitalized with COVID-19 since Dec. 23.

“The family appreciates the numerous prayers and support over the past days but asks for privacy during this difficult and unexpected time,” his spokesman said in a statement.

The newly-elected Republican announced on Dec. 18 that he had tested positive for COVID-19 and was first quarantining at home. . .

Letlow, a married dad of two from rural Start, La., won the Pelican State’s 5th District seat in a Dec. 5 runoff race and was set to take office on Sunday. (Read more from “Louisiana Congressman-Elect Dead From COVID” HERE)

House Passes Measure to Boost Stimulus Checks to $2,000

House lawmakers in both parties voted Monday to increase the amount of money provided in a new round of federal stimulus checks, agreeing with a request from President Trump to bolster direct payments aimed at helping individuals and families during the pandemic.

The measure would provide $2,000 to individuals and $4,000 for couples, which is significantly higher than the $600 for individuals and $1,200 for couples provided in a relief measure Congress passed this month.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Kentucky Republican, has not signaled whether he will bring up the House bill, but it’s unlikely to win much GOP support because it does not include new offers and would simply add to the deficit.

Trump signed the coronavirus aid package and government funding bill Sunday but sent it back to Congress with a request to bolster the checks to $2,000 and rescind some of the spending. The $900 billion package was bundled with a $1.4 trillion measure that funds the government through fiscal 2021. (Read more from “House Passes Measure to Boost Stimulus Checks to $2,000” HERE)
