Speaking at the Human Rights Campaign’s National Dinner on Saturday night, Oscar-winning actress Anne Hathaway attacked “straightness” and “whiteness” saying, “It is important to acknowledge with the exception of not being a cisgender male, everything about how I was born has put me at the current center of a damaging and widely accepted myth. That myth is that gayness orbits around straightness, transgender orbits around cisgender, and that all races orbit around whiteness.”
Hathaway continued, “This myth is wrong, but this myth is too real for too many. It is ancient, so it is trusted. It is a habit, so it is assumed to be the way things are. It’s inherited, so it’s thought immutable. Its consequences are dangerous because it prioritizes a certain kind of love; a certain kind of body, a certain kind of skin color, and does not value in the same way anything it deems to be other to itself.”
Then Hathaway segued to the idea that it is a select few white people who hold money and power and deny that same money and power to all others: “It is a myth that is with us from birth, and it is a myth that keeps money and power in the hands of the few instead of being invested in the lives of the free.”
Hathaway, whose older brother is gay, left the Catholic Church with her family after her brother went public about his sexual orientation; the family joined the Episcopal church.

Legendary Apollo 11 astronaut Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin took the upcoming film “First Man” to task for failing to include the moment when he and fellow astronaut Neil Armstrong planted the American flag on the moon during their 1969 mission.
Aldrin, 88, who was the second man to step on the moon, posted a picture on Sunday of himself and Armstrong planting the flag with the hashtag “Proud to be an American.”
Aldrin’s post came after Ryan Gosling, who portrays Armstrong in “First Man,” defended the filmmakers’ decision not to include the iconic moment, arguing it was not just an American achievement.
“I think this was widely regarded in the end as a human achievement [and] that’s how we chose to view it,” Gosling told reporters at the Venice Film Festival last month, according to Fox News.
Gosling, a Canadian, added, “I also think Neil was extremely humble, as were many of these astronauts, and time and time again he deferred the focus from himself to the 400,000 people who made the mission possible.”
Armstrong famously intoned as he prepared to leave the lunar landing craft, “One small step for man; one giant leap for mankind.”
The Ohioan died in 2012 at the age of 82. Prior to being selected for the space program in the late 1950s, he served as a U.S. Navy fighter pilot in the Korean War and a test pilot afterwards.
After graduating from the United States Military Academy at West Point, Aldrin also flew fighter jets in the Korean War and went on to enter the space program in the early 1960s.
He retweeted a picture of himself saluting the American flag close to the 49th anniversary of the historic achievement last month.
Aldrin plans to participate in events throughout the upcoming year leading to the 50th anniversary of his and Armstrong’s walk on the moon.
Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., called the notion the moon landing was not an American achievement “total lunacy.” He noted, “It wasn’t a UN mission.”

President John Kennedy first set the goal of the United States reaching the moon by the end of the 1960s.
In an address to Congress in May 1961, he said, “I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the Earth. No single space project in this period will be more impressive to mankind, or more important for the long-range exploration of space; and none will be so difficult or expensive to accomplish.”
JFK reiterated the goal at a speech at Rice University Stadium in Texas in September 1962.
Armstrong’s sons Rick and Mark, along with their father’s biographer James R. Hansen, released a statement last week dismissing the notion that “First Man” does not recognize the lunar landing as an American achievement, Fox News reported.
“This story is human and it is universal. Of course, it celebrates an America achievement. It also celebrates an achievement ‘for all mankind,’” the statement said, adding that “the filmmakers chose to focus on Neil looking back at the earth, his walk to Little West Crater, his unique, personal experience of completing this journey, a journey that has seen so many incredible highs and devastating lows.”
“First Man” director Damien Chazelle (who also directed Gosling in “La La Land’) added in his own statement on Friday, “The flag being physically planted into the surface is one of several moments of the Apollo 11 lunar EVA [extravehicular activity] that I chose not to focus upon,” he said on Friday.
Chazelle further stated: “To address the question of whether this was a political statement, the answer is no. If one were to point to an iconic moment during the first moon landing in 1969, the primary moment to come to mind would probably be Neil Armstrong’s legendary words, “One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” However, a close second would probably be the planting of the American flag on the rock orbiting the third rock from the sun. . .
According to the U.K. Telegraph, “a new film about (Neil) Armstrong has chosen to leave out this most patriotic of scenes, arguing that the giant leap for mankind should not be seen as an example of American greatness.”
“The film, ‘First Man,’ was unveiled at the Venice Film Festival yesterday, where the absence of the stars and stripes was noted by critics.”
“Its star, Ryan Gosling, was asked if the film was a deliberately un-American take on the moon landing. He replied that Armstrong’s accomplishment ‘transcended countries and borders.’”
Yes, yes it did. And it did so because of American greatness. I really don’t see how that fails to come across, but Gosling has some explanation that sounded a bit like Charlie Brown’s teachers to me. Here’s something to brighten up your Monday: Actor Chris Pratt gave another terrific acceptance speech in which he openly talked about his faith and honored God at the Teen Choice Awards.
Pratt won the Choice Summer Movie Actor award for his role in “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.”
“I’m so thrilled to be here; I have not been a teen for quite some time,” Pratt said. “This means a lot to me.”
“I want to thank God. I always do that when I’m up on a big platform in front of a bunch of young faces,” he continued.
“I love God; that’s my thing, I love him! And you should too!”
This isn’t the first time Pratt has publicly called for his fans to love God. In June at the MTV movie awards, Pratt offered advice to the young people in the audience as he accepted the Generation award.

The West Hollywood City Council called Monday night for President Trump’s star be removed from the Hollywood Walk of Fame, according to a tweet by the city’s mayor.
“West Hollywood City council unanimously passes resolution asking the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to remove the Donald Trump star on Hollywood Walk of Fame,” cheered Mayor John Duran on Twitter.
During the meeting, Mr. Duran said the resolution “is not because of his conservative politics or his conservative policies. It is for the abuse of women, minorities, immigrants, the disabled … you’ve crossed a line of decency.” . . .
“Unfortunately some of the comments made by the Trump supporters tonight are a reflection of that anger and angst and divisiveness. If anyone ever needed to solidify my vote on this, the Trump supporters who showed up tonight … pretty much solidified that what we’re doing is right.”

Sarah Palin recently revealed she was “duped” by actor Sacha Baron Cohen, who disguised himself as a disabled U.S. veteran to interview her for his upcoming Showtime series, Who Is America?.
And a source tells PEOPLE that the former Alaska governor, 54, walked out of the prank interview after the disguised Cohen asked her a “horrible” question about Chelsea Clinton.
The interview, which taped in November 2017, was booked through a speaker’s bureau that was working with the former Republican vice-presidential candidate at the time. “The request was very sophisticated and looked legit,” the source says.
“All of it was obnoxious, but I think the last straw was when the interviewer asked about what he claimed was a government-funded sex-change operation for Chelsea Clinton,” the source says. “Cohen was trying to get Governor Palin to say something homophobic and hateful. She takes it personally when anyone goes after the children and families of politicians. She just thought, ‘What a horrible thing.’ She was particularly incensed about that.” . . .

Between February and April of this year, police received allegations that the American actor sexually assaulted men in London and Gloucester.
This brings the number of claims against Spacey being investigated by London police to six – five complaints of sexual assault and one of assault. . .
Two of the latest allegations are said to have occurred in London – Westminster (1996) and Lambeth (2008) – and the third in Gloucester (2013).

Several things here. First, I don’t know if there’s ever any particularly great way to apologize for suggesting that someone’s 4-year-old daughter ought to be raped, but trying to emphasize that it was a “totally inappropriate attempt at humor” isn’t it.
Second, I always love the boilerplate language emphasizing that they’re alone responsible for what they had to say. Was anyone attributing his words to someone else?
Actor Chris Pratt shared a gospel message in an acceptance speech at the MTV awards Monday, interspersing a serious message about God’s love in a list of “9 Rules for Life” for the younger generation.
“This being a generation award, I’m going to cut to the chase and I’m going to speak to you — the next generation — okay,” he said. “I accept the responsibility as your elder, so, listen up. This is what I call ‘9 Rules from Chris Pratt, Generation award winner.”
Some of the rules were humorous or tongue in cheek. “Breathe,” he said. “If you don’t, you’ll suffocate.” Or “Don’t be a turd. If you’re strong be a protector and if you’re smart be a humble influencer.” And of course a poop joke:
“If you have to poop at a party, but you’re embarrassed because you’re going to stink up the bathroom, just do what I do. Lock the door, sit down. Get all the pee out first, and then once all the pee is done — poop, flush. Boom.”
But his points about God were totally serious and seemed to stem from a conservative view of the Christian gospel. “You have a soul, be careful with it,” he said in Rule 2. And later, “God is real. “Dukes of Hazzard” and “Smallville” star John Schneider suggested Wednesday that his conservative leanings and support for President Trump may have played a role in his being sentenced to three days in jail for unpaid alimony.
Mr. Schneider, who was released Tuesday from the Los Angeles County Jail after serving five hours of the three-day sentence, told Fox News that his conservative values may have hurt him in court. . .
“I do think there’s a bias against conservatives, Republicans, in Hollywood, but I think if you let that alter how you are, then I question how you are,” he said. “If you believe it, speak it, live it.” . . .
“I supported the last president [even though] I didn’t vote for him, but I supported him because I believe that’s my duty as a United States citizen,” he told Fox. “The difference here is that I did vote [for Trump] and I don’t mind people knowing that.” . . .
