By Newsweek. Federal prosecutors on Tuesday took one of their final steps in winding down the sprawling criminal case against Jeffrey E. Epstein, the Manhattan financier and alleged sex trafficker who died by apparent suicide earlier this month.

Epstein’s defense attorneys, however, sought to prolong the case’s remaining proceedings, asking U.S. District Judge Richard M. Berman to use the court’s “inherent authority” to probe the death of their former client.

The defense also threw already rampant suspicion surrounding Epstein’s untimely death into further uncertainty when they alleged that they have evidence suggestive of an incident “far more consistent with assault” than suicide. . .

Defense counsel further alleged that the medical examiner who concluded that suicide was the final cause of death only saw nine minutes of footage from one security camera to help arrive at that determination.

Attorneys representing the government asked the judge to terminate the proceedings, saying that the current legal landscape leaves them little if any room to continue a case after the pre-trial death of a charged individual. Attorneys for Epstein asked Berman to formally investigate Epstein’s apparent suicide, though there are already several announced probes into the matter originating from the Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Dozens of Jeffrey Epstein Accusers Speak out in Court

By The New York Post. The hearing Tuesday to dismiss federal sex-trafficking charges against dead pedophile Jeffrey ­Epstein looked and sounded more like a trial, with 23 women — including more than a dozen new accusers — sharing their stories of abuse at Epstein’s hands.

“I was nothing more than a teenage prostitute. I was his slave,” wrote one Epstein victim, who was a 16-year-old virgin when she says Epstein raped her.

The woman’s letter was read in court by her lawyer, Gloria Allred. “He washed my entire body in the shower and said, ‘If you are not a virgin, I will kill you,’ ” she said. . .

“I am still mad, concerned and confused about how he committed suicide and escaped responsibility once again,” one woman said, referring to the wrist-slap plea deal he copped in Florida in 2008 that let him dodge federal charges — and continue preying on victims. Former Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York Elie Honig believes that Jeffrey Epstein’s death “does pretty clearly look like a suicide,” but the circumstances surrounding the accused sex trafficker and billionaire financier’s passing also highlight the “inexplicable negligence” of staffers at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan, where he was being held.

“There needs to be some serious accountability,” Honig said in an interview with the Yahoo News podcast “Skullduggery.” “How could this have happened? How could they have lost Jeffrey Epstein? How could they have lost the top-priority, highest-profile, most sensitive single inmate that they had at that time? There are a lot of questions that need to be answered.” . . .

Honig said there should have been an “extra red flag” in Epstein’s case, especially since he had tried to kill himself only three weeks earlier.

“How do they not keep an eye on that guy?” he wondered. “It’s not like this came out of nowhere.”

Hours after Epstein’s death, Attorney General William Barr announced that the Department of Justice, which oversees the Bureau of Prisons, would launch a thorough investigation. On Thursday, CNN reported that federal investigators had issued as many as 20 grand jury subpoenas to MCC corrections officers. Could French Prosecutors Be Targeting Ghislaine Maxwell and Jean Luc-Brunel With Epstein Probe?

By Law and Crime. French prosecutors opened a preliminary investigation into Jeffrey Epstein’s alleged rape of minors at his Paris apartment.

Chief Paris prosecutor Remy Heitz said in a statement that this investigation has been opened up due to “exchanges with American authorities, competent in the so-called Epstein affair.” The investigation has reportedly been opened to investigate Epstein’s illicit activities in France and the alleged abuse he committed against French citizens.

No details have been provided as to what specifically prosecutors are investigating, but Epstein is known to have several connections in France. His friend and suspected accomplice, Jean Luc-Brunel, allegedly gifted Epstein three French 12-year-old girls for his birthday one year. Brunel, a model scout who founded MC2 Model Management, appeared in both Epstein’s flight logs and his little black book of elite contacts.

“He went on to tell me how Brunel bought them in Paris from their parents, offering them the usual sums of money, visas, and modeling career prospects,” said Virginia Giuffre in a 2015 statement. “Jeffrey Epstein has told me that he has slept with over 1,000 of Brunel’s girls, and everything that I have seen confirms this claim.” . . .

Aside from Epstein’s apartment in Paris and his relationship with Brunel, Epstein’s long-time friend and alleged madam, Ghislaine Maxwell, has long-standing ties in the South of France, where she was born. Several members of Maxwell’s family also have homes there, including her older sister, Christine Malina-Maxwell, who is married to the son of rocket scientist Frank Malina, one of the U.S.’s top scientists at the Jet Propulsion Lab. By Fox News. Disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein was taken off suicide watch after being examined by a “doctoral-level psychologist” days before he hanged himself in his prison cell, according to the Justice Department.

The disclosure was made in a letter addressed Thursday to House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., and ranking member Doug Collins, R-Ga. The letter was obtained by Fox News on Friday.

“The Department can confirm that Mr. Epstein was placed on suicide watch in July,” Justice Department official Stephen E. Boyd wrote. “Mr. Epstein was later removed from suicide watch after being evaluated by a doctoral-level psychologist who determined that a suicide watch was no longer warranted.” . . .

Epstein’s ability to take his own life while incarcerated at one of the most secure jails in America ended the possibility of a trial that could have involved prominent figures and sparked widespread anger that he wouldn’t have to answer for his alleged crimes.

Since Epstein’s death, Attorney General William Barr has removed the director of the federal Bureau of Prisons and appointed a new director and deputy director. The jail’s warden has been reassigned to a desk post at a regional office and two guards who were supposed to be watching Epstein the night he died were placed on administrative leave. France to Investigate Rape Charges Linked to Jeffrey Epstein Case

By Fox News. France opened an investigation on Friday into the alleged rape of minors and a raft of other charges linked to the Jeffrey Epstein case, the chief Paris prosecutor announced.

A statement by prosecutor Remy Heitz said the decision to open a preliminary investigation was based on “elements transmitted” to his office and “exchanges with American authorities, competent in the so-called Epstein affair.” . . .

No details were provided about what “elements” led to the probe and whether it might concern in-person testimony from alleged victims of Epstein who had maintained an apartment at a luxury address near the Arc de Triomphe. Alan Quartucci was surprised to be in the black book. He is a bloodstock agent, an expert at finding promising Thoroughbreds in New York and Kentucky for clients looking to purchase or partner in the ownership of a race horse.

Former Epstein Cellmate Requests Prison Transfer, Claiming ‘Deplorable’ Conditions, Threats From Guards

An ex-cop facing the death penalty who briefly shared a cell with disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein asked a judge Tuesday to move him to a new facility, claiming guards threatened him inside a New York federal lockup.

Bruce Barket, an attorney for Nicholas Tartaglione, cited comments from Metropolitan Correction Center (MCC) guards telling his client to “shut up,” “stop talking” and “stop complaining,” in his letter to White Plains federal Judge Kenneth Karas.

“The clear message Mr. Tartaglione has received is that if he conveys information about the facility or about the recent suicide, there will be a price to pay,” Barket wrote. “Whether or not the investigators into the suicide chose to interview Mr. Tartaglione about the attempted suicide to which he was witness or about how the facility is run and the conditions under which the inmates are forced to live, the correction officers know he has information potentially very damaging to the very people now charged with guarding him or their coworkers.”

The 51-year-old Tartaglione, convicted for several drug-related slayings, shared a cell with Epstein, 66, at the Lower Manhattan detention facility during what was believed to be Epstein’s first suicide attempt on July 23. He was transferred out of the cell in the facility’s Special Housing Unit sometime later. . .

“The continuing and seemingly unresolvable problems with the conditions of Mr. Tartaglione’s confinement coupled with the unfortunate attempted suicide by a cellmate, to which Mr. Tartaglione is a critical witness, and the successful suicide of that same person makes his continued detention at the MCC inappropriate,” his letter to Karas said. Why Was Jeffrey Epstein Allowed to Purchase Small Women’s Panties From the Palm Beach Jail?

By Miami Herald. A decade ago, during a brief stint in Palm Beach County Jail, convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein made an odd purchase at the facility’s store: two pairs of small women’s panties, size 5.

It was just one of thousands of dollars of purchases made by the disgraced financier while in jail after pleading guilty in 2008 to soliciting a minor for sex, according to a purchase log. (His top purchase was single-serve cups of coffee, of which he bought more than 800 in 13 months.) But the panties raise questions about why a childless male inmate, accused of sexually abusing girls as young as 14, would be allowed to buy female undergarments so small that they wouldn’t fit an average-sized adult woman.

The panties were certainly too small for Epstein, who also purchased his briefs in men’s medium and sweatshirts ranging from XL to 3XL, and size-12 shoes. So what, or who, were they for, and why wouldn’t the purchase raise eyebrows under the circumstances? It’s one of many questions that arise from thousands of pages of records obtained by the Miami Herald from the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office. Jeffrey Epstein’s Lawyers Break Their Silence After Official Cause of Death Revealed

By The Blaze. Three lawyers representing accused sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein broke their silence Friday evening, announcing they plan to conduct their own thorough investigation into Epstein’s shocking death.

“We are not satisfied with the conclusions of the medical examiner,” lawyers Martin G. Weinberg, Reid Weingarten, and Michael Miller said in a statement. . .

The lawyers claimed Epstein was imprisoned under “harsh, even medieval conditions” at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in lower Manhattan. And because it is “indisputable that the authorities violated their own protocols,” the lawyers said they would conduct their own investigation.

“The defense team fully intends to conduct its own independent investigation into the circumstances and cause of Mr. Epstein’s death including if necessary legal action to view the pivotal videos — if they exist as they should — of the area proximate to Mr. Epstein’s cell during the time period leading to his death,” the lawyers said. . .

However, questions swirled around the official cause of Epstein’s death on Thursday after the Washington Post reported that Epstein’s autopsy revealed he had several broken neck bones more consistent with homicide by strangulation than suicide by hanging. “The worst one that I heard from his own mouth was this pretty 12 year old girls he had flown in for his birthday,” alleged victim Virginia Roberts, who now goes by Virginia Giuffre, said of Epstein, according to The Sun.

“It was a surprise birthday gift from one of his friends and they were from France. I did see them, I did meet them,” she said, noting, “Jeffrey bragged afterwards after he met them that they were 12-year-olds and flown over from France because they’re really poor over there, and their parents needed the money or whatever the case is and they were absolutely free to stay and flew out.”

Discrepancies in the Recent Photos of Ghislaine Maxwell Suggest They May Have Been Photoshopped

The New York Post found her in the unlikeliest of places: The In-N-Out Burger in Hollywood. Calling them “the first photos” since Epstein’s death, the Post reported that Maxwell “was scarfing down a burger, fries and shake al fresco at an In-N-Out Burger on Monday,” August 12, while reading a book about “the secret lives and deaths of CIA operatives.” . . .

But new questions raised by The Mail throw the veracity of the photos into question — and raise the possibility that the situation could have been a set-up.

The Daily Mail visited the In-N-Out on Friday. Its reporters found that the advertisement posted behind Maxwell, on a bus stop, was for a local hospital.

But the New York Post photos show a poster for “Good Boys,” the newly released rated R movie where pre-teens make sex jokes, in the same spot. Outfront Media, the advertising agency that manages posters on that bus stop, told the Daily Mail that the hospital poster had been there since July 28. . .

The diner who took the photo also seems to have used a sophisticated camera lens, according to The Daily Mail, rather than a smartphone camera. It raises the possibility that the photo was taken by a professional photographer, rather than a regular diner who incidentally recognized Maxwell, as the Post claimed.

Following Epstein’s Prison Death, Barr Appoints New Federal Prison Chief

Following the death of billionaire and accused child sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein while in federal custody, Attorney General William Barr announced a shake-up of leadership at the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) on Monday.

According to a Justice Department press release, Barr has named Dr. Kathleen Hawk Sawyer as the acting director of the bureau. Dr. Hawk Sawyer was the first female director of the BOP and was appointed by Barr during his first stint as attorney general back in 1992. She remained at that position until 2003.

The press release also notes that the former-now-acting director received multiple awards during her previous tenure, including the Attorney General’s Award for Excellence in Management in 1992, two Presidential Rank Awards for Meritorious Service in 1994 and 2000, and the Presidential Distinguished Executive Award in 1997.

Barr also named Dr. Thomas R. Kane acting deputy director. He has previously served as BOP chief of staff, assistant director, deputy director, and acting director under four previous attorneys general, the release says.

“Under Dr. Hawk Sawyer’s previous tenure at the Bureau, she led the agency with excellence, innovation, and efficiency, receiving numerous awards for her outstanding leadership, ” said Attorney General Barr in a statement. “During this critical juncture, I am confident Dr. Hawk Sawyer and Dr. Kane will lead BOP with the competence, skill, and resourcefulness they have embodied throughout their government careers.”

Barr also thanked outgoing acting director Hugh Hurwitz “for his dedication and service to the Bureau over the last fifteen months.” The statement says that Hurwitz has been asked to return to his previous role in the BOP’s re-entry division, where one of his primary tasks will be overseeing the implementation of the First Step Act — 2018’s big criminal justice bill.

Epstein, a 66-year-old financier accused of child sex trafficking, was found dead in his Manhattan jail cell earlier this month. While the neither the press release nor Barr’s statement mention Epstein by name, the shake-up comes after Barr vowed to address how a high-priority inmate like Epstein could have died in federal custody.

Last week, Barr said that he was “appalled — indeed, the entire department was — and frankly angry, to learn of the [prison’s] failure to adequately secure this prisoner.” He also vowed that his team “will get to the bottom of what happened at the [prison] and we will hold people accountable for this failure.” The day after those remarks, Barr reassigned the warden of the prison where Epstein was held.

While Epstein’s death was recently ruled a suicide, there’s still a great deal of mystery surrounding the matter. There is no footage of what happened to the prisoner, law enforcement officials told the New York Post. Furthermore, a new report notes that Epstein’s cellmate was transferred to another part of the prison before Epstein’s death. And an autopsy performed last week found neck fractures that are more commonly found in homicides than suicides. There are people who suggest that Epstein knew that the explosive exposé was coming out and it was only a matter of time before federal authorities would come for him. There are conspiracy theories that say that Epstein ordered that expensive cement mixer to his private island, now often known as “Pedophile Island” or “Orgy Island,” to hide incriminating evidence in the cement. Possibly dump these cement-covered secrets in the Caribbean Sea. . .

A dozen FBI agents raided Epstein’s Manhattan townhouse last week and seized “hundreds and perhaps thousands” of photographs of nude underage girls according to federal prosecutors.

Not Just a Cement Truck, Epstein Also Shipped Himself Shredder, Tile and Carpet Extractor When Things Started Getting Hot

JEFFREY EPSTEIN SHIPPED a shredder from the U.S. Virgin Islands to his Palm Beach home in July 2008, shortly after reaching a non-prosecution agreement with then-U.S. Attorney Alex Acosta, maritime records show. Then, in March of this year, shortly after a Florida federal judge invalidated that agreement, Epstein shipped a tile and carpet extractor from the Virgin Islands to his Manhattan townhouse, the records show. . .

A key challenge investigators faced when first targeting Epstein in the mid-2000s was an inability to obtain evidence through subpoena. A 2005 search of Epstein’s Palm Beach home came up empty in its quest for computers that investigators suspected contained critical evidence connected to his alleged sexual abuse of young girls.

In 2007, a federal grand jury subpoenaed the computers. That August, Acosta, who is now Donald Trump’s labor secretary, entered into plea agreement discussions with Epstein. Because of those talks, a motion to compel production of Epstein’s computers was delayed, according to the Miami Herald. Epstein held out, however, resisting the deal because it would require him to register as a sex offender. The FBI continued investigating and in March 2008, according to the Miami Herald, preparations were being made to take the case to a new federal grand jury.

That would prove unnecessary, as Epstein agreed to a deal with Acosta. Without notifying the 32 identified victims, the federal government reached a non-prosecution agreement with Epstein in exchange for his guilty plea in state court to a minor offense. By Fox News. Personnel at the New York City prison where accused sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein committed suicide last week have not been initially cooperative with investigators from the Department of Justice, a federal source told Fox News Friday.

Attorney General William Barr sent two senior DOJ officials to personally visit the Metropolitan Correctional Center and speak with staff from the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) in order to gather information on Epstein’s death after Barr said officials uncovered “serious irregularities” at the jail, a senior DOJ official told Fox News. The officials have been on site since Thursday and the FBI and the Justice Department’s inspector general are investigating conditions at the MCC.

BOP officials from various regional offices have also been sent to the Manhattan facility to lend their expertise and insight. In addition, a separate BOP “After Action Team” went to MCC earlier this week in an effort to examine what happened the night Epstein died. The use of the “After Action Team” is part of BOP protocol whenever a “significant event takes place at a prison. Jeffrey Epstein’s Alleged Madam, Ghislaine Maxwell, Photographed at California Burger Joint: Report

By Fox News. Jeffrey Epstein’s mysterious, alleged madam surfaced Thursday at a California In-N-Out Burger, where a photographer snapped her reading a spy novel while scarfing down a burger and fries.

Ghislaine Maxwell, 57, allegedly provided Epstein with underage sex slaves. Court documents allege Maxwell, who is the daughter of the late, disgraced publishing tycoon Robert Maxwell, also participated in threesomes with Epstein and underage girls, according to multiple women who have come forward in the case. . .

The elusive former associate of Epstein could face criminal prosecution, and is believed to have valuable information about Epstein’s illicit activities. Epstein was found dead in his prison cell early Saturday. Authorities said it appeared he committed suicide, but an autopsy has raised questions about his cause of death.

Maxwell was photographed sitting alone in the outside patio area of a Los Angeles In-N-Out Burger restaurant Thursday. She is seen reading an opened book with a burger and fries on the table in front of her, the Post reported.
