Press Release – Combat Veterans for Congress PAC Endorses Joe Miller for U.S. Senate

Picture_Joe_Standing_By_Tank21c4daFairbanks, Alaska. December 23, 2013 – Joe Miller, candidate for U.S. Senate is proud to receive the endorsement of the Combat Veterans for Congress PAC.

The Combat Veterans for Congress enjoyed great success in the 2010 and 2012 campaign cycles seeing dozens of the candidates they endorsed elected to office. The group’s mission statement reads, “Combat Veterans For Congress Committee is dedicated to supporting the election of fiscally conservative Combat Veterans to Congress . . . who believe in limited government, will rein in the out of control spending of Congress, are committed to preserving and defending the US Constitution, and will support the independence and freedom of the individual as outlined in the Bill of Rights.”

In their endorsement, the Combat Veterans for Congress highlighted some of Miller’s achievements including being an honor graduate of West Point, holding a juris doctorate from Yale Law School and a masters in economics from the University of Alaska, being a veteran who was awarded the Bronze Star for his leadership in combat, as well as serving as a state and federal magistrate judge–the youngest then serving in those positions in the state and nation, respectively. Miller also had the distinction of being the only to serve at both the state and federal levels simultaneously in the nation at that time. Miller, in both the private practice of law and as a part-time borough attorney, has argued several cases successfully before the Alaska Supreme Court.

The group’s endorsement of Miller reads in part:

“The Combat Veterans For Congress PAC is pleased to endorse former Captain Joseph Miller, Esq., USA who will bring to Congress private sector skills and wisdom to better solve problems in government and represent the Alaska and the Republic…The military is one of the few remaining institutions producing the caliber of men and women needed to restore this nation to the greatness our Founding Fathers envisioned. We have endorsed another Combat Veteran For Congress that General George Washington would have approved of. He is a Veteran who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to ‘The United States of America’ for an amount up to and including his life.”

Miller responded to the group’s endorsement stating, “I am honored to receive the endorsement of the Combat Veterans for Congress Committee, and I am also proud to stand with my fellow veterans in defense of our Constitution. It is time to make America the land of liberty and opportunity the Founders intended, once again.”

Joe Miller is a husband, father, war veteran, businessman, and Constitutional conservative who believes in limited government, the Right to life, individual liberty, private property, and free markets.

Combat Veterans for Congress’ Statement Endorsing Joe Miller for U.S. Senate

Picture_Joe_Standing_By_Tank21c4daThe Combat Veterans for Congress announced its endorsement of Joe Miller for the U.S. Senate. The group released the following statement in part:

The Combat Veterans For Congress PAC is pleased to endorse Combat Veteran and fiscal conservative Joe Miller for the US Senate from Alaska. A patriot, not a politician, former Captain Joseph Miller, Esq., USMA ’89, USA (R-AK-Senate) https://joemiller.us of Fairbanks, Alaska served in the U.S. Army on active duty from June 1989 to September 1992, during which he deployed to the Middle East for Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm. He is seeking the Republican nomination to the US Senate for the opportunity to run against Alaska’s Democratic Senator Mark Begich, who marches in lock step with Harry Reid’s tax and spend policies.

Begich voted for the Stimulus Bill, the flawed Obama Care Health Bill, and supported the Obama/Reid big government agenda ninety-one percent of the time. Joseph Miller was born and raised inSalina, Kansas; he grew up in a working class family, his father was a minister, and his parents ran a bookstore. Joe graduated from Salina Central High School in 1985. He attended the US Military Academy at West Point, New York where he was a member of the Officers Christian Fellowship; Cadet Miller graduated in June 1989 with honors, received a Bachelor of Science Degree, and majored in American Political Science. He subsequently earned a JD, Law Degree from Yale Law School in 1995 and an MS in Economics from the University of Alaska in Fairbanks in 2008.

In June 1989, upon graduation from the US Military Academy, Cadet Joseph Miller was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the US Army.  Second Lieutenant Miller previously went thru advanced summer training while a Cadet at West Point and was awarded the Parachute and Air Assault Badges.  Following graduation from West Point, Lieutenant Miller attended Armor Officer Basic Course and the Scout Platoon Leader Certification Course at Fort Knox; he was subsequently assigned to the First Infantry Division at Fort Riley, Kansas.

In December 1990, Lieutenant Miller, an armor officer, deployed to Saudi Arabia during Operation Desert Storm with the First Infantry Division. He was subsequently involved in combat action and participated in the liberation of Kuwait. In May 1991, Lieutenant Miller returned to the United States with the First Infantry Division. Lt. Miller was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation as well as numerous other service and campaign medals for military service and combat action. In 1997, Cpt. Miller was released from the Individual Ready Reserve and received an Honorable Discharge for his honorable service in the US Army.

Because of his love of the outdoors, in 1994 Joe Miller headed to the Last Frontier. After graduating  from Yale Law School, he accepted a position in a prestigious law firm in Anchorage, then, in 1998, at age 30, he was appointed a State Magistrate (the youngest then serving in Alaska) in the little village of Tok, as well as a Superior Court Master of the Fourth Judicial District. Four years later, further honors followed when Judge Miller was appointed an Acting State District Court Judge and, shortly thereafter, U. S. Magistrate Judge in Fairbanks. Again, he had the distinction of being the youngest then serving Federal Judge, not only in the state, but also in the entire nation. He was also the only judge in the United States, at that time, serving at both federal and state levels simultaneously.

In 2004, Judge Miller stepped down from the bench to run for State Representative. He overwhelmingly won the contested Republican primary and nearly pulled off an upset in the general election, receiving 48% of the vote against the Democratic incumbent, in a traditionally Democratic district; that was the closest re-election campaign the officeholder ever faced. Joe returned to the successful full-time practice of law in his own firm.  He has represented clients (including local government as both a part-time employee and on contract) in a wide variety of cases, a number of which have gone all the way to the Alaska Supreme Court.

In April 2010, Joe Miller decided to run for the US Senate and pulled off a stunning upset victory in the US Senate Republican primary, narrowly defeating incumbent Senator Lisa Murkowski. During the race, Joe received many high profile endorsements including Gov Sarah Palin, Gov Mike Huckabee, Laura Ingraham, Mark Levin, Alaska Right to Life, as well as from numerous state and local officials and tea party groups. His experience in the military, as an attorney, and as an Alaskan State Magistrate and Federal Judge prepared former Cpt. Miller to become the voice of the people; he always worked to protect and defend the US Constitution and intends to rein in the out of control spending of the Obama/Reid agenda.

[Miller] will also work diligently to join like-minded constitutional conservatives Senators to take control of the Congress from the hands of the inept Democratic leadership, and return it to the hands of the American people. [He] is a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (life Member), the NRA, Benefactor, and the Friends Church (nondenominational) in Fairbanks. He currently lives with his family in Fairbanks where he practices law. His wife, Kathleen, of 21 years, serves on the Alaskan Judicial Council, a commission that makes recommendations to the Governor concerning Alaska judicial nominees; they have 8 children, including a son who is currently a cadet at the US Military Academy at West Point.

The Combat Veterans For Congress PAC is pleased to endorse former Captain Joseph Miller, Esq., USA who will bring to Congress private sector skills and wisdom to better solve problems in government and represent the Alaska and the Republic. If you review Joe Miller’s positions on his website, you would be pleased with his stands; they agree with the Combat Veterans For Congress Mission Statement. We look forward to working with Joe Miller, and are pleased that a Combat Veteran of his caliber is running for the US Senate. If you have friends, associates, or relatives who know voters in Alaska, kindly pass this E-mail on to them, and ask them to support Joe Miller by working in his campaign, providing financial support for his campaign in any amount, and/or by networking with others who would be willing to support his campaign. The military is one of the few remaining institutions producing the caliber of men and women needed to restore this nation to the greatness our Founding Fathers envisioned.

We have endorsed another Combat Veteran For Congress that General George Washington would have approved of.  He is a Veteran who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to “The United States of America” for an amount “up to and including his life.”

ABC News Interview – Senate candidate Joe Miller: Reagan’s Message of Freedom Beats Obama’s Big Government Every Day in Alaska (+video)

Screen shot 2013-12-19 at 12.20.40 AMU.S. Senate candidate Joe Miller was a recent guest on ABC News Topline. He is interviewed by reporters Rick Klein and Michael Falcone. Below are excerpts from the interview:

Do you expect Sarah Palin’s support again?

Of course, we would love to have her support. She is a bastion of freedom. She is out there working the same sort of message we are. That is, we have to get back to free enterprise, get government out of the way, so we can build up the middle class again.

Are you Democratic Senator Mark Begich’s dream or worst nightmare?

Mark Begich was the 60th and deciding vote for ObamaCare, so that’s the political noose that’s around his neck. I tell you he’s at a real low approval rating right now. We think it is a very doable race. Keep in mind that when we beat the sitting incumbent senator in 2010 in the primary, she was at a 70 point approval rating. He’s at about 39 right now.

But here’s their concern, in 2010 your victory over the Lisa Murkowski upset the establishment. She held on to the seat in the three way race. If the Democrat is very strong, and you don’t get traction, you may end up losing that senate seat.

Hey, we are happy at what we see in a head-to-head contest. This is about Reagan principles against Big Government, Obama principles. The message of freedom, the message of Reagan is going to win every day in Alaska.

The 2010 elections ended up being a pretty big year for the tea party. We’ve seen some of the freshman from that class and some of the newer members become very, very prominent. Mike Lee from Utah, Ted Cruz from Texas, Rand Paul from that 2010 class. How do you envision your role? If you end up in the Senate, will you be linking arms with those guys?

I will absolutely be hand-in-hand with Ted Cruz, Mike Lee, and Rand Paul in the work that they are doing. And I think we are going to have greater numbers than just Joe Miller added to that liberty caucus, if you will.

This is a crucial year 2014 for Republicans nationwide. Do you think this is the year the Republicans take back the Senate?

Absolutely, I think this is the year we do take it back, in fact, I think we have to take it back, because we’ve got a lot on the line.

Miller Calls on Begich and Murkowski to Reject Murray-Ryan Budget, Support Military

Joe Miller speakingAnchorage, Alaska. December 16, 2013 – Joe Miller today called on Senators Begich and Murkowski to reject the unsustainable Murray-Ryan budget, describing it as just another Washington gimmick.

“The latest budget gimmick is yet another sign that Washington is fundamentally unserious about the debt crisis facing the nation,” Miller said. “It’s simply unacceptable to continue down the road to fiscal insolvency and economic disaster with a ‘tax and spend’ deal that does absolutely nothing to address Congress’ spending addiction.”

Not only does the budget deal result in a net spending increase of $63 billion over the next two years, it will also raise taxes and cut crucial retirement benefits for military veterans.

The deal cuts pension cost of living adjustments (“COLA”) by one percentage point per year for military retirees who aren’t disabled and not yet 62 years old. The vast majority of military personnel retire after twenty to thirty years of service at half their active duty pay level. Most under the Murray-Ryan plan will see a 20 percent or more pay cut in their COLA’s, which are linked to the inflation rate, so the salary maintains the same buying power.

CNN Money reports, “The average cut in pension payouts, including compounding interest, for a retiring Army Sergeant first class, would be about $3,700 each year, according to the Military Officers Association of America. Over 20 years, the total losses could balloon to more than $80,000.”

Joe Miller concluded, “It’s just more political double-speak, and I’m sickened that Congress has so little regard for the sacrifice of our career military men and women, much less for the commitments that they’ve made. It’s classic bait-and-switch, a raw deal that should be roundly rejected by Senators Begich and Murkowski. I urge Alaskans to contact our senate delegation and tell them to reject the Murray-Ryan plan.”

Joe Miller is a husband, father, war veteran, businessman, and Constitutional conservative who believes in limited government, the Right to life, individual liberty, private property, and free markets.

The Solution to This Present Crisis

Dear Friend of Liberty,479px-Official_Portrait_of_President_Reagan_1981

With the latest round of budget talks in Washington, it appears some Republicans on the Hill are in the spirit of giving once again. This time it’s the sequester cuts, more taxes, and some are even suggesting we adjust to the “new normal” of ObamaCare.

And what will ordinary Americans get in return? An uptick in the federal deficit, more debt on their children’s backs, fewer jobs, healthcare with higher costs and less access, and perhaps another downgrade to America’s credit rating. When will the madness end?

Ronald Reagan hit the nail on the head over 30 years ago, when he announced in his first inaugural address, “In this present crisis, government is not the solution to our problem, government is the problem.”

He then led the charge to get the federal government off the backs of the American people, and the people responded to the renewal of freedom and opportunity by making the United States once again the envy of the world.

The answer in our present crisis will only come when ordinary citizens like you and me stand up and be counted.

The goal and the object of this great fight is nothing less than a renewal of the American Dream and the restoration of our constitutional principles. That’s why I’ve filed to run for US Senate in 2014. Will you join with me in the fight?

Conventional politicians – Republicans and Democrats alike – have shown time and time again that they won’t join this fight. That’s why I need your help, so I can stand alongside other patriots in the fight like Senators Cruz and Lee!

Every day we see the crisis of leadership in our country deepening. Whether it’s the rampant corruption in our nation’s capital, the cultural decay resulting from incessant attacks upon religion and morality, or the erosion of our individual liberties –  the time for action is now.

I cannot stand idly by and watch while “the last best hope of man on earth” is dismantled by Barack Obama’s “fundamental transformation” of America. And neither can I allow the “me too” Republicans to go unchallenged while they aid and abet him through passive resistance, or even cooperation.

This is the time to face our challenges squarely and soberly. We must get our spending problem under control. We must repeal or defund ObamaCare. And we must confront this lawless administration.

Mark Begich isn’t going to do it. The “me too” Republicans aren’t going to do it. But I will work tirelessly to do exactly that.

If we fail to take action now, we are responsible for depriving our children and grandchildren of hope. They will be paying for our mistakes for generations to come.

It’s time to rebuild the foundations, return to Constitutional government, and restore freedom and economic prosperity. And if we all do our part, the future will be ours again.

Together, we can make the fundamental restoration of the America we love a reality. Can I count on your support to offer Alaska an alternative to politics as usual?

Thank you for standing with me!

In Liberty,

Joe

Barack Obama’s Dictatorial Tendencies

Barack_Obama_addresses_joint_session_of_Congress_2009-02-24Dear Friend of Liberty,

Earlier this week, Senator Ted Cruz explained remarks made by his father comparing Barack Obama to Fidel Castro and agreed with him that Barack Obama disregards the law, like in “dictatorial societies.” I completely concur with this assessment.

Cruz’s father, Rafael, fled Cuba in search of freedom in the United States following Castro’s rise to power in the late 1950s.

Ted Cruz, while granting there are vast differences between the United States and Cuba, said, “But the point my father was making, he was focusing on a sentence that President Obama used in the last two State of the Union addresses where he said, ‘If Congress doesn’t act, I will.’”

Cruz offered ObamaCare as exhibit A in his case of the President changing numerous provisions of the law, without congressional authorization.

These unilateral acts are in no way limited to the healthcare law. The President’s infamous pronouncement to act with or without Congress was made in regards to climate change, which he did through EPA regulation. He has also failed to enforce immigration law and mandatory sentencing minimums for federal crimes.

The list of abuses goes on. He unilaterally chose not to enforce the Defense of Marriage Act; he made recess appointments when Congress was not in recess; his Administration has stonewalled congressional investigations into Fast and Furious, Benghazi, the NSA and the IRS. This President feels that somehow he is above the law and does not have to answer to the people.

You know where I stand; I’m not “Johnny come lately” to this fight!

You don’t have to wonder whether I’ll fight for your Constitutional Liberties. You don’t have to wonder whether I’ll speak up for those who can’t speak for themselves. You know I will.

Our country is at peril, and there is little time to turn it around. It’s time to take a bold stand for the country we love and fight for its future.

When I am elected to the United States Senate, I pledge to confront this lawless administration. You can count on it!

I cannot do this alone; but together we can make a difference.

Thanks for your generosity and support.

In the fight,

Joe

This is the Price that Must Be Paid to Preserve Our Freedom

Dear Friend of Liberty,

Thomas Jefferson once exhorted that, “The price we pay for liberty is eternal vigilance.”

Never in recent history has there been a greater need to remember this truth as we observe the actions of this Administration and its allies in Congress.

A core understanding of these ideals formerly knew no party lines. It defined us as a nation.

Both John Kennedy and Ronald Reagan could agree that securing the God-given rights of Americans was the central purpose of government, and resisting the central top-down tyranny manifested in the communist/socialist worldview was a virtue.

In our day, it is abundantly clear that Barack Obama and the Democrats think the primary purpose of the federal government is a “fundamentally transformed” America that our Founders would not recognize, where socialism reigns. It is our duty to ensure future generations experience the same promise and opportunity that we were given.

For the last five years, Mark Begich has been a virtual rubber stamp for Barack Obama’s left-wing agenda. Now he and Harry Reid have broken with long-standing Senate tradition to shove the president’s radical activist judges down our throats.

The minority party’s right to filibuster Presidential nominees who lack the qualifications, temperament or respect for the liberties of all Americans, which dates back to the mid-19th century, is no more with regards to most judicial and executives appointments.

While Mark Begich talks a good game when he’s back in Alaska, we know he does the bidding of his party bosses when he’s in Washington.

The truth is, according to The Washington Post, he votes with Barack Obama and Harry Reid 91% of the time. So much for independence!

Just like the junior senator was the 60th and decisive vote to pass an Obamcare law that Alaskans didn’t want, couldn’t afford and clearly doesn’t work, he continues to drag us down the road towards the President’s socialist utopian dream, which history clearly teaches leads to shared scarcity, rather than the shared opportunity to live the American dream.

When I’m elected to the United States Senate, you won’t have to worry about whether I’ll represent Alaska’s interests or stand up for the constitutional principles that made our nation great. I’ll lead the charge to confront this lawless administration and its liberty stealing agenda.

But I can’t do it alone. Together, we can roll back Barack Obama’s radical agenda and restore America. Thanks for your friendship and support!

In the Fight,

Joe

Joe Miller: Begich Empowers Washington, Blames Alaskans

Photo Credit: SenateDemocrats U.S. Senate candidate Joe Miller today called into question Senator Mark Begich’s “independence” for engaging in hyper-partisanship in Washington and, through his actions, undermining our republic.

In a naked power grab last Thursday Democrats broke with a long-standing Senate tradition requiring a 60-vote majority in order to confirm judges. In so doing, Democrats have abandoned all pretext of governing by consensus, instead seizing more power for unelected government bureaucrats and judges who regulate, tax, and wield arbitrary power over Americans lives.

And what did Senator Mark Begich do? He abandoned bi-partisanship to carry the water for those he truly serves in Washington–Barack Obama and Harry Reid–and then had the gall to blame his constituents for his own outrageous actions. The Los Angeles Times quoted the senator as saying, “. . . the American people are asking us to fix this system.”

US Senate candidate Joe Miller responded:

“The fact that Mark Begich is continuously pushing his ‘independence’ in Alaska, while at the same time engaging in hyper-partisanship back in Washington is bad enough,” said Miller. “But to go a step further and blame his constituents for this naked power grab is, in my opinion deeply cynical.”

Senators Chuck Grassley and Orrin Hatch, who are both longstanding members of the Senate Judiciary Committee, note there are far more pressing vacancies in the other federal courts nationwide. The DC Circuit has the lightest caseload in the country, and filling its vacancies is simply unnecessary. Incidentally, Democrats made similar arguments in opposition to President George W. Bush’s appointees to the same court.

The junior senator’s move is all the more troubling when one considers the fact that the impetus behind the rules change appears to be an attempt by the White House to stack the DC Appellate Court in hopes of saving the Obama agenda, including Obamacare – a bill Begich was the 60th and deciding vote on.

In recent days, Begich has feigned outrage over the failed healthcare roll-out, even engaging in faux attacks on the White House in an attempt to distance himself from political fallout. But Alaskans can now see to what lengths he will go to save the president’s failed socialist experiment.

While Begich has voted for the Obama-Reid agenda 91% of the time during his tenure in the United States Senate, Joe Miller will work tirelessly to repeal Obamacare, and fight every day to restore our liberties and keep Washington outsiders from meddling in our lives.

Joe Miller concluded, “Mark Begich’s ridiculous claim that there is some public consensus out there to justify his vote to give unaccountable judges more power over our lives is disingenuous in the extreme, and it’s anything but independent. It is partisan, divisive, and deeply troubling for the future of liberty in America.”

Daily Caller: Why Joe Miller Thinks He Can Win the Race for Alaska’s Senate Seat in 2014

Photo Credit: Daily Caller Joe Miller spent Thursday on Capitol Hill trying to woo prominent national conservatives to his side as he prepares to launch a new campaign for the U.S. Senate in Alaska.

The Republican lawyer and tea party favorite made a pilgrimage to D.C. to meet with a number of top conservative legislators in the House and Senate about the Alaska contest, which is expected to be one of the hottest races in 2014.

“Obviously, we’re looking for their support in our race,” Miller said in a Thursday afternoon interview with The Daily Caller.

He declined to reveal publicly which Republicans he met with on Thursday, though allowed: “They’re all solid conservatives.”

The West Point and Yale Law School graduate pulled off an upset in the 2010 Republican primary, defeating incumbent Sen. Lisa Murkowski. But he ended up losing the general election to Murkowski, who mounted a write-in campaign after her surprising primary loss.
