George W. Bush Maxes Out Political Donations to Trump Impeachment Supporters Liz Cheney and Lisa Murkowski

Former President George W. Bush gave the maximum allowed political contributions to Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney and Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski, two Republicans who supported impeaching former President Donald Trump over the January 6 Capitol riot.

New disclosures filed with the Federal Election Commission said Bush gave Cheney $5,800 on October 28 for both the general and primary elections. On December 31, he also gave Murkowski $2,900 for her primary. The FEC sets limits on political contributions.

Cheney, the daughter of Bush’s own vice president, Dick Cheney, and an outspoken Trump critic, now serves as the lead Republican on the House Select Committee investigating January 6. She’s set to face off against Harriet Hageman, a former RNC official who has been endorsed by Trump, in an August primary. Cheney has outraised Hageman by more than four to one — $2 million for Cheney versus $440,00 for Hageman — FEC disclosures showed. . .

Cheney was one of 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach Trump over inciting an insurrection on January 6, while Murkowski was one of seven Republican senators who voted to convict him.

FEC records indicated that Bush didn’t make any other political contributions in 2021 before October. (Read more from “George W. Bush Maxes Out Political Donations to Trump Impeachment Supporters Liz Cheney and Lisa Murkowski” HERE)

Corrupt Murkowski Announces ‘22 Bid

Sen. Lisa Murkowski is running for reelection in 2022, shrugging off opposition from former President Donald Trump and the Alaska Republican Party.

The third-term Republican’s political prospects are bolstered by Alaska’s new voting laws. Rather than having to face the state GOP-endorsed Kelly Tshibaka in a closed nominating contest, Murkowski is running in an open jungle primary. The top four finishers in that August race will advance to a November general election decided by ranked-choice voting. Under these parameters, Murkowski is competitive — despite her falling out with Trump and his grassroots supporters.

Murkowski revealed her plans Friday in a campaign video.

“Lisa Murkowski puts Alaska first,” the video’s voice-over declares in a phrase that recalls the “America First” slogan popularized by Trump inside the Republican Party.

Upon the video’s conclusion, Murkowski appears to reference Trump and other Republicans who are opposing her reelection bid. The former president announced his intention to campaign against the senator in the midterm elections after she voted to convict him on one article of impeachment, approved by the House in the waning days of his White House tenure, alleging him responsible for the Jan. 6 riot at the United States Capitol. Sarah Palin Weighs Challenge to ‘GOP’ Lisa Murkowski

Former GOP Vice Presidential-nominee Sarah Palin would consider a run for Senate against incumbent Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, if it was God’s will and the “state wants me to, or needs me to.”

“If God wants me to do it I will,” Palin told Ché Ahn, leader of the New Apostolic Reformation movement, in a video posted on Instagram in late July. . .

Murkowski has been one of the Senate Republicans deemed vulnerable in 2022 because she will not get the endorsement of former President Donald Trump, having voted to impeach him for Jan. 6 incitement to insurrection after he left office. Alaska GOP Endorses Trump-Backed Challenger to Murkowski

The Alaska Republican Party endorsed Kelly Tshibaka over incumbent Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski on Saturday.

In a 58-17 vote, the party’s central committee approved the endorsement of Tshibaka, giving Alaska’s former commissioner of the Department of Administration an additional boost.

Former President Donald Trump endorsed Tshibaka after his long-fraught relationship with Murkowski disintegrated further over her decision to vote to convict the former president at his second impeachment trial earlier this year. Trump vowed to campaign against “a disloyal and very bad Senator” in March and announced he would not be endorsing the 20-year incumbent “under any circumstances.”

Murkowski was censured by her state party in March, with the Alaska Republicans agreeing to “recruit a Republican Party challenger to oppose and prohibit Senator Murkowski from being a candidate in any Republican primary.”

In a June statement announcing his support for her challenger, Trump slammed Murkowski for her vote to confirm Interior Secretary Deb Haaland, who suspended drilling leases in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

New Voting System Scrambles Alaska 2022 Senate Race

Conservative activists in Alaska aren’t pleased with GOP Sen. Lisa Murkowski’s moves to the middle. Whether that makes the political scion vulnerable in her 2022 reelection bid is an open question, according to a new poll.

That’s because starting next year, Alaska will move to a “top four” and “ranked-choice” voting system. All candidates will appear together on one primary ballot, with the top four advancing to the general election.

In November, Alaska voters will rank candidates in order of preference. Assuming no candidate gets above 50%, the last-place candidate is removed in each round of balloting until somebody has a majority.

Some believe this voting system will favor Republican challenger Kelly Tshibaka, who has criticized Murkowski for voting to impeach former President Donald Trump in his second trial and backing some of President Joe Biden’s Cabinet nominees, among other things. Murkowski also drew criticism from the Right after she became the lone Republican to oppose Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court confirmation in the fall of 2018. High-Profile Conservative Group Endorses Lisa Murkowski

Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski received an endorsement from a high-profile conservative group, shortly after a fellow Republican announced a primary challenge for her 2022 reelection. Senate Leadership Fund (SLF), a group aligned with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), threw its support behind Murkowski on Friday morning and called the incumbent a “champion for conservative values in Washington.”

“Alaska needs the kind of experienced representation that Lisa Murkowski provides in the United States Senate. Whether fighting for Alaskan interests like expanding energy production and protecting fisheries, or advancing conservative priorities by confirming judges and cutting taxes, her strong leadership is vitally important to Alaska’s future,” SLF President Steven Law said in a release. “Many politicians put themselves first, but Lisa Murkowski always puts Alaska first.”

Does This Poll Show Murkowski Can Kiss The Senate Goodbye?

A recent survey of Alaska voters shows Sen. Lisa Murkowski’s political future is in peril in the 2022 primary.

According to a Cygnal poll released at the end of March, Murkowski only has 33 percent favorability among voters, which craters to just 10 percent among Republicans. As Reagan reported, the senator is facing a primary challenge from Kelly Tshibaka, who stepped down last month as commissioner for the Alaska Department of Administration.

Tshibaka leads in a hypothetical primary ballot, with the support of 61 percent of Republicans. “Lisa Murkowski is in as weak of a position as an incumbent could possibly find themselves,” Cygnal notes. “A strong Republican candidate is poised to defeat Murkowski. Kelly Tshibaka is that candidate.” (Read more from “Does This Poll Show Murkowski Can Kiss The Senate Goodbye?” HERE)

Lisa Murkowski Draws First Major Primary Challenger

Alaska Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski drew her first major primary challenger Monday from the state’s commissioner of administration, Kelly Tshibaka.

“We know what Washington D.C. thinks about Alaska: We’re here for their benefit, and we won’t put up much of a fight. After nearly 20 years in D.C., Lisa Murkowski thinks the same way,” Tshibaka said in an announcement video published Monday declaring her candidacy.

The challenge comes two weeks after the Alaska Republican Party voted to censure Murkowski and pledge support for a primary opponent. While the censure came in part by Murkowski’s vote in favor of former President Donald Trump’s impeachment, the party cited Murkowski’s long history of decisions on consequential issues that fly in the face of conservative and Alaskan interests, from abortion to transgender sports. Alaska Republican Party Censures Sen. Lisa Murkowski, Pledges Primary Challenge

By Breitbart. The Alaska Republican Party on Saturday voted to censure Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) at its quarterly meeting and pledged to support a primary challenger against the incumbent lawmaker.

In January, Murkowski joined six other Republican senators in voting to convict Trump in his second impeachment trial in which the former president was acquitted of inciting the deadly January 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol.

“There’s a number of issues that the party has had with Sen. Murkowski for the last several years which really culminated in the conviction vote of former President Trump,” said Kris Warren, head of the Anchorage Republican Party group. “She’s repeatedly spoken out against President Trump over the years in spite of all the great accomplishments he had that helped the country and certainly helped Alaska.”

Earlier this March, Trump promised to campaign against Murkowski, who is up for re-election in 2022. (Read more from “Alaska Republican Party Censures Sen. Lisa Murkowski, Pledges Primary Challenge” HERE)

Alaska GOP Censures Murkowski

By The Hill. . .Warren said he was upset with Murkowski over past votes to preserve the Affordable Care Act and against an amendment to the most recent coronavirus relief package that would have banned trans women from competing in sports. He took issue with her decision to vote present on the nomination of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, and her support for Rep. Deb Haaland (D-N.M.), President Biden’s choice to lead the Interior Department.

But the resolution focused most on Murkowski’s relationship with the former president.

“She’s repeatedly spoken out against President Trump over the years in spite of all the great accomplishments he had that helped the country and certainly helped Alaska,” Warren said.

Murkowski’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment. She has not said whether she will seek a fourth full term, though her campaign account had $1 million in the bank at the end of 2020.

Warren declined to speculate on potential challengers who might take on the three-term Republican, who took office in 2002 to succeed her father after he became governor. Former Gov. Sarah Palin (R) has issued vague threats about running herself, though she is not seen as a likely candidate a dozen years after she left the governor’s mansion in the middle of her first term. Lisa Murkowski Could Move the Puerto Rico Statehood Bill Forward

Last year, while most Americans were focusing on the contentious presidential election, there was another critical election that could have an outsized influence on American politics for years to come.

The vote on the island asked Puerto Ricans whether they supported statehood for the island — the third such status vote in less than 10 years. Once again, the majority of Puerto Rican voters, 52.34 percent, supported statehood. It is now incumbent upon Congress to take action.

In addition to Puerto Rico’s representative Jenniffer Gonzalez-Colon in the House of Representatives and others, Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), the former chairwoman and current senior member of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, has an opportunity to play a crucial role.

The Energy and Natural Resources Committee has jurisdiction over issues surrounding Puerto Rico’s status. The committee would be the first step for relevant legislation in the Senate. This is one direct tie for Sen. Murkowski. A less direct tie is that the senator was born in Alaska at a time when it was still a territory, which may help her understand this issue better than most.
