Mexico Overtakes Canada as No. 2 U.S. Exporter

Mexico is overtaking Canada as the No. 2 exporter of goods to the U.S. this year, in large part due to car manufacturing. It’s a sign of how economic ties have deepened between the two countries even as the relationship is being questioned by President-elect Donald Trump.

Shipments from Mexico totaled $245 billion in the first 10 months of the year, according to Commerce Department figures released Tuesday, ahead of Canada’s $230 billion. If the trend continues, it would be the first time ever the U.S. bought more imports from its neighbor to the south. The two countries ended 2015 tied in exports to the U.S.

The trend of catching up to Canada puts China and Mexico as the top two exporters to the U.S. just as Trump prepares to take office in January, reflecting the strong pull of lower cost jurisdictions for the U.S. economy. Canada, which has one of the highest cost bases in the Americas, has seen its share of U.S. imports fall to about 13 percent from around 20 percent two decades ago.

“Integration with Mexico has become more solid than with Canada,” said Marco Oviedo, chief Mexico economist for Barclays Plc. “Manufacturing continues to be very competitive in terms of wages and location to other U.S. producers and suppliers.”

The growing links between Mexico and the U.S. hinge on motor vehicles. Mexico has won new factories over the past six years from Toyota Motor Corp., Volkswagen AG’s luxury Audi unit, Kia Motors Corp. and BMW AG — up to $25.9 billion in new auto investments since 2010, according to the Center for Automotive Research in Ann Arbor, Michigan — fueling car shipments totaling $90 billion in the first 10 months. That’s versus $54 billion from Canada. (Read more from “Mexico Overtakes Canada as No. 2 U.S. Exporter” HERE)

Mexican Cement Maker Ready to Help Trump Build Border Wall

A Mexican cement maker is ready to lend its services to U.S. President-elect Donald Trump to build the wall he wants to erect on the southern border of the United States to curb immigration.

“We can’t be choosy,” Enrique Escalante, Chief Executive Officer of Grupo Cementos de Chihuahua (GCC) said in an interview. “We’re an important producer in that area and we have to respect our clients on both sides of the border.”

Republican Trump campaigned vowing to build a “big, beautiful, powerful” wall across the 2,000 mile (3,200 km) frontier in order to stop illegal immigrants from Mexico, which he accused of sending rapists and drug traffickers north.

The campaign of the New York businessman who has never previously held public office was widely reviled in Mexico.

Parts of the border are already divided by high fences, and a huge part of the boundary runs along the Rio Grande river. (Read more from “Mexican Cement Maker Ready to Help Trump Build Border Wall” HERE)

Trump Heads to Mexico, but Someone’s Lying About That Border Wall

Mexican president Enrique Peña Nieto disputed remarks made by Republican candidate for president Donald Trump regarding the construction of a wall along the U.S-Mexico border.

Having Mexico pay for the construction of a wall along the border has been a key theme of Mr. Trump’s campaign, since his announcement last year. His campaign website features a detailed plan titled “compelling Mexico to pay for the wall.”

When asked if he discussed his plans with the Mexican president in their meeting today, Mr. Trump said the topic was not broached.

“Who pays for the wall? We didn’t discuss,” Trump said when asked by a reporter during the follow-up questions to their statements. “We did discuss the wall. We didn’t discuss payment of the wall. That’ll be for a later date.”

President Peña Nieto has disputed that account of their meeting. According to Peña Nieto, he flat out told Mr. Trump Mexico will not pay for a wall at the very beginning of their meeting.

“At the beginning of meeting with Donald Trump, I made it clear Mexico will not pay for the wall.”

One of these two men seems to be lying. (For more from the author of “Trump Heads to Mexico, but Someone’s Lying About That Border Wall” please click HERE)

Mexico President Urges North American Integration After Brexit

Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto on Monday called for greater integration with Canada and the United States in the wake of Britain’s vote to split with the European Union.

Nieto, who spoke during a stopover in Quebec City, is scheduled to attend a North American leaders summit in Ottawa on Wednesday with his US and Canadian counterparts.

The three countries are economic partners in the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), and work closely on security matters.

At Wednesday’s summit, the leaders are expected to announce joint energy and environmental strategies, including matching renewable energy targets.

“The purpose of this visit is to renew our bilateral relationship, to give it new life, to find ways to advance the prosperity and competitiveness of North America,” Pena Nieto said. (Read more from “Mexico President Urges North American Integration After Brexit” HERE)

Watch: Mysterious Roar and Light in the Sky Wake Mexican City

Residents in a Mexican city woke in fright before dawn on Saturday to bright light in the sky and then a thunderous noise, fearing a nearby volcano had suddenly erupted.

But officials said Popocatepetl volcano had not stirred and no earthquake had registered.

Instead, the phenomena witnessed by the inhabitants of Puebla de Zaragoza, a city of three million people 50 kilometers (30 miles) from Mexico City, was “most likely a meteor,” the local Astronomic Society tweeted.

The rock from space probably burned up in the atmosphere and no impact was detected, it explained.

“It was horrible, we thought it was the volcano, but it wasn’t,” said one resident, Emma Chavez. (Read more from “Mysterious Roar and Light in the Sky Wake Mexican City” HERE)

The Deadly Crossing on the US-Mexico Border

Today on “Full Measure,” we have a report on “The Missing”—the hundreds of illegal immigrants who cross the border, never to be seen alive again. Their remains are found in remote desert areas.

For this story, I traveled to the Tucson, Ariz., morgue where advanced forensic science is used to identify the remains, and let loved ones know how the journey ended.

Here’s an exchange I had with Dr. Gregory Hess, the Pima County medical examiner:

HESS: “Since about 2001, we’ve had the largest number of undocumented border crosser deaths for any single jurisdiction in the U.S. and so we’ve had a lot of experience with examining these kinds of remains.”

ATTKISSON: “How successful are you at identifying these unknowns?”

HESS: “It’s actually pretty good. We’ve had about 2,500 unidentified remains since 2001, of people we believe to be foreign nationals. We’ve identified [about] 1,700 of those. So it’s about 65%.”

ATTKISSON: “That’s pretty amazing, right?”

HESS: “Yeah, it’s pretty good. But that still leaves us with [about] 900 individuals that we have not identified. And essentially the odds of us identifying someone are directly proportional to the conditions of the remains when they come in, and whether or not they have any personal effects with them.”

HESS: “Just because somebody has personal effects doesn’t mean that it’s that person, because people travel under aliases quite frequently, and they may have just flat out false IDs.”

ATTKISSON: “So what is the key when you’re able to identify somebody that was carrying a fake identity? What’s the key to figuring out who that was?”

HESS: “Finding family. Because if you have a family, you can compare a family reference sample to the remains that we have to determine if they’re related.”

ATTKISSON: “Does it ever make you sad? The idea that this, someone’s life boiled down to this and nobody even knows when they died?”

HESS: “Sure. But you know for us, it’s more of an objective, kind of clinical perspective, because this is what we do. So we try to, you know approach it professionally and try to get this person identified.”

I also spoke to U.S. Customs and Border Protection Cmdr. Paul Beeson:

“We are of course very concerned about human life. And we’re going to do everything we can to preserve and protect human life. We have a number of programs in place to respond in those instances when migrants get into trouble when they cross through some of these desert environments. Ultimately, the smuggling organizations and these people make these decisions to cross in these areas. They put themselves at risk, the smuggling organizations put them at risk.”

Judicial Watch Uncovers New State Department Records Confirming Arab Smuggling ‘Cells,’ Al Qaeda Leader in Mexico

For more than a decade the U.S. government has known that “Arab extremists” are entering the country through Mexico with the assistance of smuggling network “cells,” according to State Department documents obtained by Judicial Watch that reveal among them was a top Al Qaeda operative wanted by the FBI. Some Mexican smuggling networks actually specialize in providing logistical support for Arab individuals attempting to enter the United States, the government documents say. The top Al Qaeda leader in Mexico was identified in the September 2004 cable from the American consulate in Ciudad Juárez as Adnan G. El Shurkrjumah. The cable was released to Judicial Watch under the Freedom of Information Act.

The new intelligence records were released as a result of an ongoing JW investigation into the critical national security threats on the southern border, specifically those created by Islamic terrorists teaming up with Mexican drug cartels to infiltrate and attack the U.S. In response to JW’s reporting in the last two years the Obama administration—through various spokespeople, including FBI Director James Comey—has vehemently denied that Islamic terrorists are operating in Mexican towns near American cities or entering the U.S. through the famously porous southern border.

The State Department documents, which include substantial redactions supposedly to protect classified and personal information, contradict this. JW obtained them as part of an investigative series into Shukrijumah, an Al Qaeda operative also known as Javier Robles. In December, 2014 Shukrijumah was killed by the Pakistan Army in an intelligence-borne operation in South Waziristan. But before he died Shukrijumah helped plan several U.S. attacks, including plots to bomb Oprah Winfrey’s studio and detonate nuclear devices in multiple American cities. For years Shukrijumah appeared on the FBI’s most wanted list and, despite being sought by the agency, he crossed back and forth into the U.S. from Mexico to meet fellow militant Islamists in Texas. JW has reported that, as one of the world’s most wanted terrorists, Shukrijumah piloted an aircraft into the Cielo Dorado airfield in Anthony, New Mexico. Men With ‘Ties To Terrorist Groups’ Just Apprehended By US – But It’s Where They Were Found…

By Maegan Vasquez. A letter from a San Diego congressman to the Department of Homeland Security says that several dozen Pakistani and Afghan men have come into the United States through a Tijuana since September, and two of those men have ties to terrorist activity, the San Diego Reader first reported.

In a letter from Congressman Duncan Hunter (R-CA) to Defense Secretary Jeh Johnson, the two men in their 20’s were among those found during a recent increase of “military age” men “carrying U.S. cash” apprehended on the Tijuana-San Diego border. The letter says one individual had “associations with a known or suspected terrorist,” while the other was flagged for “derogatory information.”

The Reader reports:

“Until November, they would enter in groups and seek a federal agent to surrender to, according to union officials. It is believed that they did this because illegal entrants who are not Mexican citizens and who are deemed to not pose a significant threat are generally given a date to appear at immigration court and then released on their own recognizance.”

‘Military Age Men’ at San Diego’s Southern Border

By Marty Graham. Among the several dozen Pakistani and Afghan men who have entered the U.S. illegally, coming into San Diego from Tijuana, two were found to have ties to terrorist groups, according to a letter sent by U.S. Rep. Duncan Hunter to the Department of Homeland Security.

Muhammad Azeem and Muktar Ahmad, both in their 20s, surrendered to U.S. Border Patrol agents in September, according to Immigration and Customs Enforcement. One was listed on the Terrorist Screening Database for “associations with a known or suspected terrorist. The other was a positive match for derogatory information in an alternative database,” according to Hunter’s letter.

Azeem and Ahmad are among dozens of men — described by Border Patrol agents as “military age and carrying U.S. cash” who began entering the U.S. through a Tijuana-based human-smuggling pipeline in September. (Read more from “‘Military Age Men”‘ at San Diego’s Southern Border” HERE)

150 on Flight From Mexico Skip Customs, Leave JFK

Airline and security officials at Kennedy Airport let 150 passengers arriving from an international flight leave the airport without going through customs, the Daily News has learned . . .

When the plane landed, passengers walked out of the airport without having their passports or bags checked by Customs and Border Protection, sources told The News.

A source familiar with the matter said passengers disembarking the plane “just followed” a gate agent. The security snafu came just two days after ISIS released a video threatening New York City with a terrorist attack . . .

American Airlines contacted the passengers and directed them to return to JFK for customs processing. An official told The News on Sunday that 144 passengers had returned to the airport and gone through customs. The six that remain are all U.S. citizens, the official said.

The TSA, which screens passengers before they fly, declined comment, while the Port Authority said that the clearing of arriving international travelers is a federal responsibility. The airlines, it said, direct travelers to security areas. (Read more from “150 on Flight From Mexico Skip Customs, Leave JFK” HERE)

Appallingly Dishonest Pew Study on Immigration Trend From Mexico

If you want to know the depths of dishonesty and obfuscation the liberal elite employ in order to distort the reality on any given issue, take a look at this Pew research report on immigration from Mexico. Pew claims that migration from Mexico is down to such a point that there is net out-migration—that is to say more Mexicans in America have died or gone back home than returned.

Media outlets, from The Hill and Politico to the Washington Post and Wall Street Journal, are breathlessly promoting the headline of this report as if it reflected the truth of the moment. Their broader message was: “See, the right wing nuts are going crazy about a border crisis when, in reality, there is zero net migration from Mexico.”

The one problem? Pew was using old data from 2009-2014.

There is nothing new about this. Pew has been reporting on a number of occasions that in light of the recession a number of illegal immigrants from Mexico returned home. But guess what? As we reported several months ago, according to the most up-to-date census data, based on the Current Population Survey (CPS), there has been a massive spike in net migration from Mexico since 2014, precisely after Obama and the Gang of Eight began encouraging illegal immigration in a number of ways. The fact that 80 percent of illegal immigrants are now officially shielded from deportation and most others are unlikely to ever encounter resistance has clearly contributed to the surge. Intelligence reports based on interviews of illegal aliens bear out the growing perception that our policies incentivize illegal immigration.

Yet, Pew was dishonest enough to report this data as if it reflects the current reality, even though the current trend portends a political dynamic completely the opposite of that which they are trying to implant in the media cycle.

In reality, this Pew report proves every premise of the border hawks. The fact that some illegal aliens returned home following the recession demonstrates how the false choice between amnesty and mass deportation is a straw-man argument. Mere passive economic disincentives from a recession were strong enough to entice illegal immigrants to repatriate. Imagine the effects of cutting off welfare and education benefits, jobs, and unqualified birthright citizenship? Every time disincentives were effectively rolled out, a number of illegal immigrants voluntarily returned home.

And that is what has been so tragic about Obama’s amnesty programs from 2012-2015 and Rubio’s amnesty bill in 2013. The allure of mass amnesty completely reversed the tide and has spawned one of the sharpest increases in net migration from Mexico in years. Incentives and disincentives matter in terms of immigration policy and border control.

Here are the numbers obfuscated by Pew and ignored by the media:

From 2009-2014, net migration was -140,000. Because of the recession, roughly 140,000 more Mexican nationals left the country than migrated in from Mexico.

Yet, from July 2014 through June 2015, the trend was completely reversed. There was a 740,000 net increase in Mexican migration. The population from Mexico grew 449,000 in just the first 6 months of 2015 alone!

And this doesn’t factor in the massive influx from Central American countries. There has been a 460,000 net increase in immigration from Central America since July 2014.

You can read my full report from August here.

As I noted in my report, these numbers come from the most up-to-date BLS and Census data—the same numbers that are universally respected when touting health insurance and employment rates. What these numbers suggest is that President Obama has completely reversed the trend of out-migration by encouraging so many illegal aliens to return. Even the furthest deviation in the margin of error for this census data—the most unlikely scenario—would suggest a 340,000 net increase in just 12 months.

Pew Research does some good work and has a number of reputable researchers and demographers. But for Pew to release an old study based on a trend that has been completely countermanded since the compilation of that data, knowing that the media will report it as reflecting the existing reality, is extremely dishonest. Then again, everything about the open border cartel is based on lies, obfuscation, distortions, and deception.
