Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey (R) has issued a Declaration of Emergency and the deployment of National Guard troops to the state’s southern border to assist local law enforcement with the overwhelming influx of illegal immigrants pouring into the U.S. from Mexico.
Ducey’s office announced the state of emergency Tuesday, saying that “the State will provide up to $25 million in initial funding for the mission” that entails up to 250 guardsmen assisting at border communities by providing medical care in detention centers, installing surveillance cameras, and other services.
The media release noted that U.S. Customs and Border Protection saw more than 170,000 apprehensions at the U.S. southern border in March, nearly 19,000 of which “were unaccompanied children — more than four times the number of kids apprehended in March 2020.”
“The situation in our border communities is just as bad—if not worse—than the coverage we’ve been seeing,” the governor said in a statement. (Read more from “Arizona Declares State Of Emergency, Deploys National Guard Over Border Crisis” HERE)

A Minnesota National Guard neighborhood security team says it was attacked early Sunday morning. Two guard members were injured from a drive-by shooting in Minneapolis, according to the Minnesota National Guard.
A neighborhood security team comprised of Minnesota National Guardsmen and Minneapolis Police Department officers were reportedly fired on around 4:19 a.m. on Sunday near Penn Avenue and Broadway Avenue in Minneapolis.
“A light-colored SUV fired several shots” at a security team involved with Operation Safety Net, a “joint effort among the Minneapolis Police Department, Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office, the State of Minnesota and local jurisdictions” to “ensure the safety of the public during the trial of Derek Chauvin; committed to protecting people, property, and freedom of speech.”
Two Minnesota National Guard members sustained minor injuries from the attack.
“One Guardsman sustained an injury from shattered glass requiring additional care and was taken to a local hospital to receive treatment,” the Minnesota National Guard reported. “The other Guardsman received only superficial injuries.”
The National Guard was deployed in Minneapolis as hundreds of people looted and rioted into the early hours Monday after a black man was shot dead while trying to flee arrest less than 10 miles from where George Floyd died.
The National Guard was deployed in Minneapolis as hundreds of people looted and rioted into the early hours Monday after a black man was shot dead while trying to flee arrest less than 10 miles from where George Floyd died.
The fatal shooting of 20-year-old Daunte Wright in Brooklyn Center came as the Twin Cities was already in a state of high alert over the trial of ex-cop Derek Chauvin, charged with Floyd’s murder last May.
Wright, who had an outstanding warrant, had been pulled over around 2 p.m. Sunday — and was shot after jumping back in his car and trying to race away, crashing to a stop after driving several blocks, police said. By WND. The barriers, National Guard troops and heightened police presence at the U.S. Capitol is meant to “send a signal” that Trump supporters are “dangerous” and “insurrectionists,” according to a prominent Republican senator.
“I think the fencing is remaining in place to send a signal — a narrative that 74 million voters who voted for President Trump are dangerous to our democracy, they’re all insurrectionists, and that’s simply not the case,” said Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., in an interview with Maria Bartiromo on the Fox News Channel’s “Sunday Morning Futures.”
Johnson, the ranking member of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, said it’s still unknown exactly what happened on Jan. 6 and who was responsible.
“And yet, we have these eight-foot-tall fences with concertina wire completely surrounding the Capitol,” he said.
“Obviously, leaders in Congress think walls and barriers work because they’ve surrounded the Capitol with them,” said Johnson, referring to Democrats’ opposition to the southern border wall. (Read more from “Senator: Troops and Wall at Capitol Are Message to ‘Dangerous’ Trump Voters” HERE)
Pentagon Reveals How Much It Will Cost to Keep Troops in DC Through March
By Washington Examiner. The National Guard presence in the capital, which once reached over 26,000 troops and will continue into the spring, will cost taxpayers nearly half a billion dollars, Pentagon officials said.
The Guard presence began with just 340 citizen-soldiers helping to direct traffic on Jan. 6, the day the Capitol was overrun by pro-Trump rioters. It quickly ramped up to include troops from all 50 states, three U.S. territories, and the District of Columbia following the violence, and those military personnel were helping lock down the city ahead of now-President Biden’s inauguration.
The Pentagon, for the first time, revealed Monday that the total cost of the deployment through March 15 will be $483 million, with $284 million stemming from personnel costs and $199 million from their operations. The figures were revealed following a question posed by the Washington Examiner. . .
The National Guard Bureau told the Washington Examiner that the Guard has been paying the bills with its appropriation of $19 billion for the current fiscal year. However, Guard officials intend to ask the Department of Defense for a reimbursement of the mission’s costs. Gov. Ron DeSantis has ordered more than 600 Florida National Guard soldiers to return home from Washington following reports that troops were “banished” from U.S. Capitol buildings to a parking garage.
DeSantis blasted the treatment of soldiers in the nation’s capital during an appearance Friday morning on “Fox & Friends.”
DeSantis called the assignment a “half-cocked mission at this point” and took aim at Democratic U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
“They are soldiers,” DeSantis said “They are not Nancy Pelosi’s servants.”
About 26,000 National Guard soldiers were stationed in Washington following the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol. Even before the controversy, 15,000 troops assigned to the capital were set to return home within 10 days, according to the National Guard Bureau. Nearly 200 National Guard members who deployed to Washington, DC, after a riot at the Capitol and in advance of the inauguration, have either tested positive for COVID-19 or are quarantining in nearby hotels, according to reports.
Politico reported Friday that more than a hundred National Guard members have tested positive for COVID-19 and several hundred more are quarantining in hotels. The outlet reported that some Guard members are being forced to find their own tests and others were being pressured to leave quarantine and report to duty.
Guard leadership has declined to release an official number of positive cases, but troops and lawmakers alike worry that the deployment is becoming a superspreader event.
Wall Street Journal reported that nearly 200 members have tested positive for COVID-19, and that some officials fear that cramped rest and working quarters contributed to the spread. (Read more from “Reports: Nearly 200 National Guard Members Test Positive for COVID-19 After Inauguration” HERE)

By The Federalist. Following the Capitol riot on Jan. 6, Democrats are now calling for and encouraging the vetting of National Guard members[.]
“When you have Guardsmen and women coming from all over the nation at this time, I do think that it is prudent to make sure that they are being vetted and that anybody who cannot pledge allegiance to their missions, and may be pulled by other views, needs not only to be removed from this duty, they need to be removed from the Guard,” D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser said on Tuesday.
Just days before, Rep. Steve Cohen, D-Tenn., explained a similar concept to CNN’s Jim Sciutto, saying that even though “the guard is 90-some-odd-percent male … only about 20 percent of white males voted for Biden.”
“You’ve got to figure that in the Guard, which is predominantly more conservative — I see that on my social media, and we know it. They’re probably not more than 25 percent of the people that are there protecting us who voted for Biden,” Cohen said. “The other 75 percent are in the class, the large class of folks, who might want to do something.”
Rep. Steve Cohen implies that 75% of the National Guard are in the class of people who "may want to do something" at the inauguration.

Guardsmen Feeling Betrayed and Used After Getting Kicked Out of the Capitol
By Townhall. The thousands of National Guardsmen stationed at the U.S. Capitol and nearby congressional buildings were abruptly told to vacate the premises on Thursday.
A new report in Politico says the Guardsmen were told by Capitol Police to leave the Capitol premises and set up mobile command centers outside or in nearby hotels. The Guardsmen were also told to take rest breaks during their 12-hour shifts either outside or in nearby parking garages.
The report cited a Guardsmen whose unit was suddenly told to vacate the Dirksen Senate Office Building where troops had gathered following a long couple of days at the Capitol complex. The 5,000 troops in the unit were reportedly forced to “rest” on the hard floors of a parking garage that lacked internet reception, contained a single electrical outlet, and a lone bathroom with just two stalls.
“Yesterday dozens of senators and congressmen walked down our lines taking photos, shaking our hands and thanking us for our service. Within 24 hours, they had no further use for us and banished us to the corner of a parking garage. We feel incredibly betrayed,” a Guardsman told Politico. Three National Guard members were killed when a military helicopter crashed in upstate New York Wednesday evening, officials said.
The aircraft, a UH-60 medical evacuation helicopter, was on a routine mission when it crashed in Mendon, a rural town near Rochester, around 6:30 p.m., according to the New York National Guard.
Videos on social media show first responders at the scene blocking the road.
Witnesses told WROC-TV they saw the chopper flying low near the ground.
The chopper flew out of the Army Aviation Support Facility at Rochester International Airport. It was assigned to the C Company of the 1st Battalion, 171st General Support Aviation Battalion, the National Guard said. (Read more from “Three National Guard Members Killed in Helicopter Crash” HERE)

Two Army National Guard members have been removed from the inauguration security mission after vetting found they had ties to far-right fringe groups, a U.S. official told ABC News Tuesday.
The two Guard members are among the 25,000 National Guard troops who have been sent to Washington to augment security at the inauguration in the wake of the violent Jan. 6 assault on the U.S. Capitol.
The two Guardsmen were removed from the mission after vetting conducted by the FBI determined they had ties to far-right extremist groups, the U.S. official said.
No details were immediately available about which State Guard units the two belonged to or about the nature of of the alleged ties. (Read more from “2 National Guard Members Removed From Biden Inauguration” HERE)

Acting Defense Secretary Christopher Miller said Monday that U.S. authorities have “no intelligence indicating an insider threat” to President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration.
The FBI is vetting every National Guard member deployed to the nation’s capital due to Pentagon officials worrying about a possible insider attack, according to the Associated Press. The National Guard was called to the nation’s capital after a mob of President Donald Trump’s supporters stormed the building Jan. 6 in an attempt to stop the joint session of Congress from certifying Biden’s electoral victory in the 2020 presidential election.
“As is normal for military support to large security events, the Department will vet National Guardsmen who are in Washington, D.C.,” Miller said in a statement, according to The Hill. “While we have no intelligence indicating an insider threat, we are leaving no stone unturned in securing the capital.” (Read more from “Acting Defense Secretary Says ‘No Intelligence’ Indicates Internal Threat Ahead of Biden Inauguration” HERE)
