If Republicans Don't Fight Now, They Never Will

Barely one month ago, the party sailed to victory in one of the biggest rout election waves of the past century. They ran the board and took control of the U.S. Senate. They grew to historic levels in the U.S. House. The Democratic Party was left in tatters in state, local, and governor races across the country.

But today, just a few weeks later, before GOPers even take hold of their new reins of power, the party is crying poverty. They are stricken with paralysis. House Speaker John A. Boehner, known for his weeping, begs powerlessness.

“Frankly, we have limited options and limited abilities to deal with it directly,” Mr. Boehner said last week when asked about President Obama’s unconstitutional executive action to grant amnesty to millions of illegal aliens presently living illegally in the U.S.

“Limited options?” “Limited abilities?” We have an unbridled madman in the White House right now taking a machete to the U.S. Constitution and the leader of the opposition party that was just thrust to power in a historic rejection of the president and his cleptocratic policies is now talking about “limited” options and abilities?

Funny, I don’t recall a single Republican running in a single race this year on a campaign that Republicans in Congress have only “limited” options and abilities to stop Mr. Obama. No, in fact, every single one of them ran their entire campaigns on the singular promise that we have to vote for Republicans so they could stop Mr. Obama. And Americans voted.

Actually, Republicans Can Cut The Funding For Obama’s Amnesty

Congress has the power to defund President Barack Obama’s executive amnesty order, the Congressional Research Service announced Wednesday. This, after a week of bipartisan declarations that Congress was powerless to stop the order.

“In light of Congress’s constitutional power over the purse, the Supreme Court has recognized that ‘Congress may always circumscribe agency discretion to allocate resources by putting restrictions in the operative statutes,’” reads a report from the Congressional Research Service. The report was sent to Republican Sen. Jeff Sessions’ office, first reported by Breitbart News, and has since been obtained by The Daily Caller.

The Congressional Research Service (CRS) is an “authoritative, confidential, objective and nonpartisan” congressional analysis outfit that operates out of the Library of Congress.

The analysis stands in stark contrast with a previous analysis by the Republican-dominated House Appropriations Committee, which issued a Thursday statement saying that the agency tasked with executing the order, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, ”is entirely self-funded through the fees it collects on various immigration applications. Congress does not appropriate funds for any of its operations, including the issuance of immigration status or work permits, with the exception of the ‘E-Verify’ program. Therefore, the appropriations process cannot be used to ‘defund’ the agency.”

Photo Credit: APGOP WANTS TO SHOW IT CAN GOVERN

By Jake Sherman and Burgess Everett.

The Senate flipped, John Boehner expanded his majority in the House and now Republicans want to show they can govern.

Before the election, top-level Republican aides and lawmakers described the strategy they hoped would let them notch some early victories before the presidential election season is in full swing in the second half of 2015 — a play by Boehner and other leaders to quickly shift away from crisis governing and toward a positive agenda.

At the top of the list is to get a funding bill passed to keep the government open through most of next year, freeing up the calendar to take on other issues like a GOP budget and a long-term highway bill.

Legislating won’t begin until after Thanksgiving. Both parties intend to spend the weeks immediately after election organizing for the new partisan makeup of Washington. Capitol Hill will burst back into action by Dec. 1, and that’s when serious lawmaking could break out.

Republicans are desperate to avoid fiscal fights in the first half of 2015, which is why they will try to use the first few weeks in December to pass a long-term spending bill to keep the government open through most of the next year. Funding runs dry Dec. 11, as does the authority for President Barack Obama’s administration to train and equip moderate Syrian rebels in their fight against the Islamic State. That provision could complicate the calculus for lawmakers’ hopes for a drama-free spending bill.

Wendy Davis Tweets A Pic Of ‘Supporters…’ Turns Out They’re College Republicans

Democratic Texas gubernatorial candidate Wendy Davis has landed herself in yet another embarrassing situation when she tweeted a picture she claimed were her supporters… but turned out to be a group of Virginia College Republicans.

Davis posted what would appear to be an innocuous tweet on October 21:

But one of the comments on the tweet complained. “This is a picture of me and I am a proud conservative,” tweeted college student Lauren McCue, “Idk how you got it. Please take down immediately.”

Obama: Republicans 'Just Have Bad Ideas'

Photo Credit: APMarching onto the campaign trail for the first time this year, President Barack Obama cast Democrats’ success in this year’s midterm elections as a chance to further the policies he’s fought for in the White House. “Don’t give up now,” he said. “Not after we’ve made this much progress.”

Returning to the accepting embrace of his home state of Illinois, Obama told voters in Chicago that Republicans mean well, but “just have bad ideas.” He accused the GOP of recycling those ideas over and over, urging voters to take their future into their own hands by showing up Nov. 4 — and electing Democrats.

“The power to move our society, our government, it really is in your hands,” Obama said during a rally for Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn that doubled as a homecoming for the president. “You’re the reason that I had the audacity to actually run for president of the United States.”

Echoing many of the same themes as his own 2008 and 2012 campaigns, Obama said Democrats were fighting to give women equal pay, give children a good education and give all Americans access to decent health care. He contrasted that with the policies of Republicans, whom he claimed were living in the 1950s and belong “in a ‘Mad Men’ episode.”

Obama’s rallies Sunday in Chicago and Maryland marked his first major foray into the 2014 midterm elections. Obama was supposed to rally last week in Connecticut for Gov. Dannel Malloy, but postponed that visit to focus on Ebola.

Why Republicans May Not Win the Senate after All

Photo Credit: Reuters Establishment Republicans should keep the champagne on ice until after the midterm elections. Too many are already popping corks, pronouncing their strategy of “crushing” the Tea Party during the primaries as a crucial step in their successful takeover of the Senate.

There are increasing signs, however, that the GOP might not take control of the Senate and may only make modest gains in the House of Representatives. In states like North Carolina, for example, the GOP candidate hasn’t shown the ability to wage a major-league campaign. In other key battleground states, the establishment GOP is supporting problematic candidates, like Monica Wehby in Oregon, who can alternatively be described as pro-Obamacare and a plagiarist. The National Republican Senatorial Committee handpicked Wehby over a strong conservative in the primary. She is now running 20 points behind.

In Kansas, the GOP Senate nominee, incumbent Senator Pat Roberts, seems to consider Virginia his home because that is his only permanent residence. A sizable number of Virginia Republican voters, meanwhile, aren’t going for Ed Gillespie, former Republican National Committee chairman, who is the GOP nominee there, either.

National polls show the GOP to be about as popular as the heartbreak of psoriasis. The Democrats, for all their faults (and they are many) remain more popular. Republicans are not for anything. They are defined as simply being against President Barack Obama and certainly not for any form of federalism.

Since the 1950s, beginning with the rise of Senator Barry Goldwater and William F. Buckley’s National Review, there has been a war for the soul of the GOP. But this time is different. The establishment Republicans loath the conservative-Reaganite-Tea Party-reformer-populists, viewing them as a serious threat. They stand as an indictment against the entire GOP insider culture.

Hell Freezes Over: Limbaugh Unloads on Republicans

Photo Credit: WNDListeners have been asking Rush Limbaugh why he hasn’t devoted much airtime to election-related polls or analyzing the Republican Party’s chances of triumphing in the next election.

Thursday, Limbaugh addressed these questions, explaining that he “is not gonna talk about something if I have to do it perfunctorily, if I’m not into it and don’t care about [it].”

And if he can’t get excited about “the nuts and bolts of the election,” he explained, it’s because he doesn’t know “what the Republican Party message is” anymore.

Polls show that Obama and the Democrats are less popular than they’ve been in years, but at the same time, Limbaugh noted, these polls don’t exactly foreshadow an upcoming Republican landslide, either.

Limbaugh tried to explain why.

Have Republicans Given Up On Attacking Obamacare? Doubtful.

In a bit of dubious cherry-picking, a new Bloomberg piece concludes that the Affordable Care Act is losing its effectiveness as a political issue for Republicans. Working off this premise, Greg Sargent at the Washington Post reasons that this tells us Obamacare is “disappearing” as a major issue. And Paul Krugman followed up with his characteristic level-headed analysis.

How do we know the end is near-ish? Well, so many Americans are “benefiting from the law,” theorizes Heidi Przybyla, that political ads are simply not doing the job anymore. This news is somewhat unexpected – and unpersuasive – when you consider a Kaiser Family Foundation poll recently found that only 15 percent of Americans believe Obamacare has directly helped them, while 28 percent say it has directly hurt them. (Fifty-six percent say it has had no effect on their lives.)

Somewhat more convincingly, Przybyla offers this bit of evidence: “Those seeking to unseat the U.S. Senate incumbent in North Carolina,” she writes, “have cut in half the portion of their top issue ads citing Obamacare, a sign that the party’s favorite attack against Democrats is losing its punch.” Then again, that’s quite an extrapolation, as well – especially when you consider that in her very own story Przybyla tells us that GOP groups have plans to re-focus on ACA as soon as premium increases for 2015 are announced. Like any issue, the political impact of Obamacare is hitched to events surrounding the law. An ebb is not a capitulation. And there will be more Obamacare events.

But even if there weren’t, consider that a quarter of all political ads running in North Carolina attack Obamacare specifically. This seems to suggest that it’s still a comparatively “major issue.” Or, let’s put it this way: Is there any other law in the United States that eats up more political space?

Paul Davis Touts Support from Republicans in Bid for Kansas Governor

Photo Credit: THAD ALLTON / APDemocratic challenger Paul Davis sought Tuesday to give his campaign for Kansas governor a bipartisan boost by announcing endorsements from more than 100 moderate Republicans who’ve split with conservative GOP Gov. Sam Brownback over education and tax policy.

The disaffected Republicans include outgoing Insurance Commissioner Sandy Praeger, three former Kansas Senate presidents and three former Kansas House speakers. More than half are former legislators, and the list includes former U.S. Rep. Jan Meyers, who represented the Kansas City-area 3rd District from 1985 to 1997.

They announced that they formed Republicans for Kansas Values because of their concerns about the aggressive personal income tax cuts enacted at Brownback’s urging.

They called the reductions a reckless fiscal experiment and suggested Brownback’s administration has been hostile to public education.

Davis’ campaign staged a news conference at a Topeka hotel with 40 of the disaffected Republicans so that the bipartisan tone would draw a sharp contrast with rallies Brownback’s re-election campaign had on Monday in Olathe and Wichita.
