U.S. ‘Very Concerned’ About China’s ‘Provocative Military Activity Near Taiwan’

The State Department said on Sunday that the U.S. is “very concerned” about China’s “provocative military activity near Taiwan” following Beijing’s most recent show of air power near the self-governing island.

“The United States is very concerned by the People’s Republic of China’s provocative military activity near Taiwan, which is destabilizing, risks miscalculations, and undermines regional peace and stability. We urge Beijing to cease its military, diplomatic, and economic pressure and coercion against Taiwan,” State Department spokesperson Ned Price said in a statement.

On Friday, China flew 38 military aircraft into Taiwan’s Air Defense Identification Zone, believed to be Beijing’s largest military provocation seen yet. . .

Since the beginning of the year, China has continuously flown military aircrafts into Taiwanese airspace as part of its ramped-up efforts to strengthen its territorial claim over the island. (Read more from “U.S. ‘Very Concerned’ About China’s ‘Provocative Military Activity Near Taiwan'” HERE)

Taiwan Deploys ‘Anti-Aircraft Missiles’ Against Chinese Pla Incursion

C on Thursday, prompting the island to respond by “scrambling fighter jets” and “tracking the aircraft with land-based anti-aircraft missiles,” Taiwan News reported.

In the first of two incursions Thursday afternoon, 19 Chinese People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) aircraft entered the southwestern corner of Taiwan’s ADIZ at about 4:30 pm local time, Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense (MND) confirmed.

The first deployment of PLAAF aircraft included “12 Shenyang J-16 fighter jets, two Shaanxi Y-8 anti-submarine warfare (Y-8 ASW) planes, two Xian H-6 bombers, one Shaanxi Y-8 electronic warfare aircraft (Y-8 EW), and two Shenyang J-11 fighter jets,” according to the MND.

About three hours later at 7:15 pm local time, the MND announced that five additional Chinese PLAAF aircraft penetrated the same southwest corner of Taiwan’s ADIZ.

“This time, two Shenyang J-16 fighter jets, one Shaanxi KJ-500 airborne early warning and control aircraft (KJ-500 AEW&C), and two Shenyang J-11 fighters were spotted,” according to Taiwan News. (Read more from “Taiwan Deploys ‘Anti-Aircraft Missiles’ Against Chinese Pla Incursion” HERE)

Chinese State Media Warns of Military Action if Taiwan Office Changes Name

In China on Sunday, a state-run media outlet warned of “severe” military and economic consequences against Taiwan if Washington allows the self-ruled island to change the name of its representative office in the U.S.

The Global Times referred to a Financial Times report from Friday saying that President Joe Biden’s administration is considering allowing the office to change its name from the “Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office” (TECRO) to the “Taiwan Representative Office.”

The Chinese paper warned such a change would seriously anger Beijing and provoke a “severe” military and economic response:

“If the U.S. and the Taiwan island change the names, they are suspected of touching the red line of China’s Anti-Secession Law, and the Chinese mainland will have to take severe economic and military measures to combat the arrogance of the U.S. and the island of Taiwan. At that time, the mainland should impose severe economic sanctions on the island and even carry out an economic blockade on the island, depending on the circumstances.” (Read more from “Chinese State Media Warns of Military Action if Taiwan Office Changes Name” HERE)

Biden Administration Deletes Social Media Post Featuring Flag of Taiwan

The Taiwanese government on Thursday delicately objected to the Biden White House deleting a social media post touting America’s donation of coronavirus vaccines to Taiwan, apparently because the message included an image of the Taiwanese flag.

The Chinese Communist government is enraged by written or visual messages that imply Taiwan is an independent country.

The White House “Covid-19 [Chinese coronavirus] Response Team” posted a message on Twitter this week that listed U.S. vaccine donations to countries around the world, including the shipment of 2.5 million doses of Moderna vaccine to Taiwan announced in June, tripling the original American pledge.

As with all of the other recipients of U.S. vaccine donations, the flag of Taiwan appeared in this tweet. . .

The response from Tsai and the Kuomintang depicted above say the original tweet is “unavailable” because the White House deleted it. (Read more from “Biden Administration Deletes Social Media Post Featuring Flag of Taiwan” HERE)

Military Official Warns U.S. Of Potential Surprise Attack On Hawaii

Russia and China are coordinating military exercises to threaten not only Taiwan but also Hawaii, according to a senior Japanese defense official who warned the United States to beware of a Pearl Harbor-style surprise attack.

“We have to show the deterrence towards China, and not just China but also the Russians, because, as I told you, that they are doing their exercises together,” Japanese deputy Yasuhide Nakayama told the Hudson Institute this week.

Taiwan’s vulnerability to an invasion from mainland China has become a preoccupation of Indo-Pacific strategists in recent months, as Chinese Communist forces escalate their military drills around the island. Nakayama, who was unusually frank about the need for democratic nations to ensure Taiwan’s survival, implied that Russia and China are working as allies preparing for a major conflict.

“I think the Taiwanese are really concerned,” he said. “And also, they’re focusing on the two big countries collaborating and [presenting] a lot of threat towards Taiwan.”

Chinese Communist officials regard Taiwan as a renegade province, one that they have claimed since coming to power in 1949 but never governed. Most countries recognize the regime in Beijing as the official Chinese government and do not have formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan, although the U.S. has maintained a friendly relationship and provided weaponry to help Taiwanese authorities deter an invasion from the mainland. State Secretary Demands WHO Include Taiwan At Assembly Despite Chinese Protest

Secretary of State Antony Blinken is demanding that Taiwan be allowed at the World Health Assembly later this month, despite protests from Chinese officials and delegates.

The Department of State released a press statement on Friday titled “Restoring Taiwan’s Appropriate Place at the World Health Assembly,” criticizing the Assembly’s decision to exclude Taiwan from the meeting due to China’s protests.

“There is no reasonable justification for Taiwan’s continued exclusion from this forum.” The statement read in part, calling for World Health Organization Director General Tedros Adhanom to invite Taiwan as an “observer” to the assembly.

Blinken said that Taiwan offered “valuable contributions and lessons learned from its approach to these issues,” further adding that preventing the country from participation would “imperil, not advance” global health objectives at the meeting. Taiwan Announces Military Exercises With U.S. Marines

Taiwan announced on Monday the arrival of U.S. Marines participating in joint exercises, marking the first public acknowledgment of military exercises with U.S. forces in over 40 years.

Amphibious joint exercises between U.S. Marine Raiders and the Taiwanese Marine Corps began in Taiwan this week and were described as “routine” by Taiwan’s Naval Command, the first admission of direct Taiwanese-American military cooperation since 1979, according to Newsweek. Taiwanese soldiers will receive a month of amphibious training under the U.S. Marines.

“In order to maintain regional peace and stability, routine security cooperation and exchanges between the militaries of Taiwan and the United States are proceeding as usual,” the Taiwanese Navy said in a statement. (Read more from “Taiwan Announces Military Exercises With U.S. Marines” HERE)

U.S. Approves Second Massive Sale of Defensive Weapons to Taiwan

The State Department has approved another multibillion-dollar sale of defensive weapons to Taiwan, bringing the total to more than $4 billion this month.

The latest approval is for 100 Harpoon mobile missile launchers and 400 Harpoon missiles, which will significantly bolster Taiwan’s ability to target Chinese ships in the Taiwan Strait, the 100-mile-wide strip of water separating the island from the mainland.

“Harpoon Block II is an over-the-horizon, anti-ship missile manufactured by Boeing Defense, Space & Security. It is the world’s superior anti-ship missile capable of performing land-strike and anti-ship missions,” according to NavalTechnology.com.

“These mobile land-based coastal defense batteries … add to Taiwan’s existing anti-ship defenses and provide significant additional deterrent capabilities,” said the US-Taiwan Business Council. “The substantial expansion of Taiwan’s Coastal Defense Cruise Missile stocks, which also include the domestically designed and built Hsiung Feng II/III, is a welcome development,” said the group’s president in a statement.

The potential sale is valued at $2.37 billion and comes a week after the approval of a $1.8 billion package of missiles, artillery rockets, and reconnaissance systems. (Read more from “U.S. Approves Second Massive Sale of Defensive Weapons to Taiwan” HERE)

U.S. Says ‘Within International Law’ to Sail Near Taiwan Amid China Warning

The Pentagon is defending its recent operation near Taiwan as compliant with international law in the face of Chinese protests that the U.S. deliberately was aggravating the geopolitically sensitive situation in the disputed waterway.

Senior Colonel Zhang Chunhui, spokesperson for China’s People’s Liberation Army Eastern Theater Command, said Thursday that warships and warplanes were dispatched Thursday to monitor U.S. Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer USS Barry as it sailed near the Taiwan Strait, where Zhang accused the Navy of “seriously undermining the peace and stability of the Taiwan Strait.”

Zhang said his forces were “always on high alert” and accused the U.S. of “sending the wrong messages” to those in Taiwan who would seek to officially separate the self-ruling island from the mainland that claims it. . .

Challenging Chinese claims to the Taiwan Strait, the spokesperson said all U.S. operations “were within international waters, within international law.” (Read more from “U.S. Says ‘Within International Law’ to Sail Near Taiwan Amid China Warning” HERE)
