Federal Deficit to Soar in 2016 After Ryan-Obama Tax Deal

The tax-cut deal inked by President Obama and House Speaker Paul D. Ryan last month has put a major dent in the federal budget, helping send the deficit soaring by 24 percent, the Congressional Budget Office said Tuesday.

The $544 billion deficit projected for 2016 marks the first year since 2009 that the red ink has grown, and it powers the deficit back up over the half-trillion mark, where it had been for most of Mr. Obama’s tenure.

CBO projections contained some good news, with the economy showing signs of solid growth in 2016 and 2017, finally overcoming some of the “slack” that built up during the 2008 Wall Street collapse and the Great Recession. Analysts said more people will be enticed back into the labor force, but inflation and interest rates will also rise as the economy ticks along.

But spending and taxes remain the biggest problem for the budget, with the twin deals at the end of last year to break the sequester budget caps that had held spending in check, and to extend a series of special interest tax breaks.

Combined, they meant the government needed more money than ever — but had less flowing in. (Read more from “Federal Deficit to Soar in 2016 After Ryan-Obama Tax Deal” HERE)

Obama and GOP Unleash ‘Community Schools’ to Replace Parents

Parents, beware — Big Brother is coming for your kids. Buried deep inside the mammoth “bipartisan” so-called “education” legislation approved last month, dubbed the “Every Student Succeeds Act” (ESSA), is a radical expansion of what the statute refers to as “full-service community schools.” The controversial institutions, more accurately described as parental replacement centers, seek to oversee every aspect of your child’s life, ranging from their “mental health” and “well being” to nutrition and even dentistry. You are in the crosshairs, too, as the Obama administration defines parents as “equal partners” in child rearing. And those are just some of the many unconstitutional provisions in the bill and beyond that aim to turn government schools into parents, and parents into pariahs.

In short, an increasingly out-of-control Uncle Sam — with support from the leadership of both major political parties — wants to raise your child. And with the support of virtually every education-related special interest group you can think of, the latest federal education statute, passed by the GOP Congress and cheerfully signed as a “miracle” by Obama last month, is among the primary means by which the feds plan to further undermine and attack your role as parents. The implications of the accelerating assaults on families, parental rights, constitutionally limited government, the future of America’s children, and the future of the nation itself cannot be overstated.

Consider, for example, that these community schools are supposed to provide what the legislation refers to as “pipeline services.” The statute defines it like this: “The term ‘pipeline services’ means a continuum of coordinated supports, services, and opportunities for children from birth through entry into and success in post-secondary education, and career attainment.” Those “services” must include, at a minimum: “early childhood education;” school and out-of-school programs and “strategies”; support for children’s “transitions”; family “supports,” including “at home”; career counseling; “Social, health, nutrition, and mental health services and supports”; “crime prevention and rehabilitation programs”; and much more. In other words, everything that families once provided for children will become the responsibility of “community schools.” All that is missing now is hugs and bedtime stories from Big Brother.

Students will not be the only ones targeted, however. In a section dealing with what the statute describes as “promise neighborhoods” targeted for additional federally funded “services,” the statute calls for the targeting of everyone with these “pipeline services.” Bureaucrats and institutions, including government schools funded under the scheme, will be charged with providing “social, health, nutrition, and mental health services and supports, for children, family members, and community members.” Family members and community members, in other words, will be targeted for government intervention, up to and including “mental health services.” That means you. Language calling for home visitations appears to have been removed from the bill prior to final passage, but that hardly means it will not be pursued anyway. 50% Say Race Relations in America Getting Worse

Confidence in race relations in America continues to fall, with hopes for the future at their lowest level yet.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 50% of American Adults now think race relations in this country are getting worse, up from 44% a year ago and 30% as recently as January 2014. Only 20% believe race relations are getting better, a new low that compares to 38% five years ago. Twenty-six percent (26%) say race relations are staying about the same.

Only 18% rate race relations in America today as good or excellent, unchanged from last year at this time but down from 34% two years ago. Thirty-three percent (33%) now consider race relations poor, up from 15% in 2011 and 29% last January.

Interestingly, unlike most questions related to race, there isn’t a wide difference of opinion on these questions between blacks and whites. Other minority Americans are the least pessimistic.

But blacks are much more likely than whites and other minorities to believe the United States is headed in the right direction. (Read more from “50% Say Race Relations in America Getting Worse” HERE)

Sarah Palin Just Endorsed a Presidential Candidate; Here’s Her Statement

Sarah Palin, the former Alaska governor and 2008 vice-presidential nominee who became a Tea Party sensation and a favorite of grass-roots conservatives, will endorse Donald J. Trump in Iowa on Tuesday, officials with his campaign confirmed. The endorsement provides Mr. Trump with a potentially significant boost just 13 days before the state’s caucuses.

“I’m proud to endorse Donald J. Trump for president,” Ms. Palin said in a statement provided by his campaign.

Her support is the highest-profile backing for a Republican contender so far.

“I am greatly honored to receive Sarah’s endorsement,” Mr. Trump said in a statement trumpeting Mrs. Palin’s decision. “She is a friend, and a high-quality person whom I have great respect for. I am proud to have her support” . . .

”Over the years Palin has actually cultivated a number of relationships in Iowa,” said Craig Robinson, the former executive director of the Republican Party of Iowa and publisher of the website The Iowa Republican. ”There are the Tea Party activists who still think she’s great and a breath of fresh air, but she also did a good job of courting Republican donors in the state,” he added. Woman Steps Forward With Major Claim: After Clinton Raped Me He Had ‘the Audacity to…’

By Jack Davis. A woman who has accused former President Bill Clinton of rape said Sunday night that Clinton was trying to strike up a date with her weeks after he had sexually assaulted her. She also described an interaction with Hillary Clinton that she interpreted meant Hillary Clinton knew about the incident and was covering it up.

Juanita Broaddrick, who said Clinton raped her in 1978, recounted the incident on Aaron Klein Investigative Radio. She has said that the rape took place in the spring of 1978, when she met him at a Little Rock, Ark., event while he was running for governor of Arkansas. She has gone public with her story again as Clinton has emerged to play a role in the campaign of his wife, Hillary Clinton, as she pursues the Democratic nomination for president.

On Sunday, she disclosed for the first time that after the rape, Bill Clinton called her to get together again.

“He called the nursing home that I owned and they patched the call through to my office and I didn’t know that it was him. And he immediately said, ‘Hi, this is Bill Clinton. I was just wondering when you were coming back to Little Rock again,’” she said.

“This just caught me so off guard. I had not expected anything like this at all. And I told him I would not be coming back to Little Rock again and definitely would not ever be seeing him again. And I hung up,” she said.

Apparently, Clinton did not give up. Broaddrick said Clinton placed several calls to her over the next six months, and that she had her staff field them and tell Clinton she was not available. Linda Tripp: ‘Bill Clinton Had Affairs With Thousands of Women’

By Breitbart News. In a rare interview, Linda Tripp, a pivotal figure in the Monica Lewinsky scandal, revealed on Sunday it was common knowledge while she worked in the West Wing that Bill Clinton had affairs with “thousands of women.”

Speaking on “Aaron Klein Investigative Radio,” Tripp for the first time divulged that she personally knew another White House staffer aside from Lewinsky who was also having an affair with Clinton. That unnamed staffer was mentioned by Tripp in various depositions but she has not spoken about it publicly.

She charged that Hillary Clinton not only knew about her husband’s exploits, “She made it her personal mission to disseminate information and destroy the women with whom he dallied.”

Tripp says she cringes at the sight of Clinton presenting herself as “a champion of women’s rights worldwide in a global fashion, and yet all of the women she has destroyed over the years to ensure her political viability continues is sickening to me.”

Tripp documented evidence of Lewinsky’s phone calls about her relationship with Bill Clinton and submitted the evidence to independent counsel Kenneth Starr, leading to the public disclosure of the affair. She explained to Klein that she did so because she believed her own life and Lewinsky’s were in danger, saying that Lewinsky was threatening Clinton with outing the relationship. Trump: Christianity ‘Under Siege’ [+video]

By Jordain Carney. GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump touted his faith at Liberty University on Monday, telling the conservative college that Christians have to ban together because their religion “is under siege.”

“We’re going to protect Christianity,” he said. “If you look at what’s going on throughout the world…Christianity is under siege.”

Trump pointed to targeting of Christians by terrorist groups in Syria and urged Christians to work together to use their “power” within the United States to enact change.

He added that “I’m a Protestant. I’m very proud of it, Presbyterian to be exact. …[but] bad things are happening, very bad things are happening.”

The speech comes on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, and Trump dedicated what he called a record-breaking crowd to the late civil rights leader. (Read more from “Trump: Christianity ‘Under Siege'” HERE)

Donald Trump Misquotes Bible in Liberty Speech

By Jeremy Diamond. Donald Trump pitched himself Monday to Christian students at Liberty University as a politically incorrect protector of Christianity, tailoring his classic stump speech to the evangelical audience with mixed success . . .

But Trump, who has eagerly targeted evangelicals — a key voting bloc in the first caucus state of Iowa — in his quest for the presidency, tripped over himself Monday as he attempted to quote from the Bible to connect with the crowd of students at one of the most prominent Christian universities in the country, and the largest in the world.

“Two Corinthians, 3:17, that’s the whole ballgame,” Trump said, drawing laughter from the crowd of students at Liberty University who knew Trump was attempting to refer to “Second Corinthians.” (Read more from “Donald Trump Misquotes Bible in Liberty Speech” HERE)

New York Values? Farmers Can’t Refuse Homosexual Wedding in Backyard – Unless They Want to Be Fined

Farmers who host weddings in their backyard cannot refuse ceremonies where two people of the same sex are trying to get married, a New York court has ruled.

The court’s decision affirmed the state’s Division of Human Rights (DHR) ruling against Robert and Cynthia Gifford, owners of Liberty Ridge Farms, after they declined to host a “wedding” for a same-sex couple. The Giffords said they would host the reception for a lesbian couple, but the ceremony itself would have to be hosted elsewhere because of their religious beliefs about marriage.

DHR found that the couple violated New York’s “places of public accommodation” anti-discrimination law. If the court’s decision stands, the Giffords must pay $10,000 in state fines and an additional $3,000 in damages to the lesbian couple, Jennie McCarthy and Melissa Erwin, for “mental pain and suffering.”

Additionally, the Giffords – who say they have hosted a birthday party for a lesbian couple’s adopted child, and employed people with same-sex attractions – will have to provide sensitivity training to their staff and prominently display a poster highlighting state anti-discrimination laws.

The suit goes back to a 2012 phone call that Cynthia answered. Erwin and McCarthy wanted to have their wedding on site, something Cynthia said couldn’t happen. (Read more from “New York Values? Farmers Can’t Refuse Homosexual Wedding in Backyard – Unless They Want to Be Fined” HERE)

An Ex-Hillary Spokesman Just Made a Bombshell Claim About Republican Party – You Will NOT Expect This

For years, Democratic Party leaders have attacked Republicans for waging a “war on women.” Now a former spokesman for the Democratic National Committee — and Hillary Clinton’s 2008 presidential campaign — is denouncing that rhetoric as “overly incendiary,” “not true,” and part of why Americans hate politics.

“I do not believe that there’s any sort of Republican war on women,” Mo Elleithee said Tuesday. “I hate when people say that, just as I hate when Republicans say that there’s a Democratic war on religion or the military.”

Elleithee made his comments at an event for Georgetown University’s Institute of Politics and Public Service, which he’s run since leaving the DNC in June. The longtime Democratic operative later told InsideSources that Republican policies are bad for women, but “overly hyped” political language turns voters off.

“I hate when there’s rhetoric that’s overly incendiary,” he said in an interview. “I hate when there’s rhetoric that’s just not true. When you say there’s a war on something, that means you’re out to destroy it. Republicans aren’t out to destroy women.”

Elleithee doesn’t think he used the phrase “war on women” during his tenure at the DNC, which began in August 2013. (In fact, he started distancing himself from the term years ago.) Still, there’s no question the language has been part of the Democrats’ national messaging. The GOP Needs a Candidate With a Huge Soul

As we approach the Iowa caucuses the fight is heating up about which Republican candidate deserves the support of committed Christians. A core of long-time Evangelical activists has strongly endorsed Ted Cruz — and been answered by fervent counterblasts. In the New York Times, David Brooks claimed that Cruz is a vindictive Pharisee, possessed of a pagan “brutalism,” a charge ably answered by The Stream’s own Jay Richards, and by Hunter Baker over at The Federalist, who delves into Brooks’ own recent book to show how Brooks misreads Cruz’s character. Again at The Federalist, Paul David Miller (a Rubio supporter) accuses Cruz of reducing Christian witness to a form of “identity politics,” a question I’ll address in depth in my next column.

We can differ on many issues, on prudential questions such as whether it’s more authentically Christian to favor installing democracy in majority Muslim nations such as Syria, or whether that will end up (as it did in Iraq) enabling genocidal Islamists. (For my take, see the recent column “49% Vegetarian, 51% Cannibal: Democracy Is Not Good.”) But when we choose a candidate, we aren’t just ticking off issues. We are also weighing character, and asking ourselves whether this person is someone we trust with the ultimate earthly power, the “Sword of Caesar.” So let’s step back for a moment and think about character in the classical Christian fashion, using the categories that arose in the early church and have shaped our moral discourse ever since: the Seven Deadly Sins. At the end, I will leave it to you to apply these tests to the candidates, since The Stream offers no endorsements.

As I learned while researching The Bad Catholic’s Guide to the Seven Deadly Sins, the worst of those vices is envy. It’s the sin that stirred in Satan while he spied on Adam and Eve, as Milton painted so powerfully in Paradise Lost. It’s that ache we might feel when we see someone enjoying good things that are out of our reach, but we don’t merely want to gain the same thing for ourselves. (That’s simple jealousy.) What really scratches our itch is to smash what the person has, then gloat over them in the ruins — as Satan did, at the whole human race, until Christ opened heaven. St. Thomas Aquinas set Envy as the lowest and darkest sin, since it does not even aim at anything good — but at the suffering of others. It’s Envy that drives us to take delight when gorgeous celebrities have ugly divorces, get bad plastic surgery, or go to prison. Roughly half of the “click-bait” on the Internet traffics in Envy; the other half is bikini pics.

The opposite of a deadly sin, you might be surprised to learn, is not a virtue. Instead it’s another, mirror-image sin. So if envy wants evil things for others, its mirror image is pusillanimity (pettiness of soul), which doesn’t dare to want good things for ourselves and for those we love — really, really good things, such as life, liberty, and happiness — in this world and in the next. A pusillanimous person might kind of vaguely hope that things like that will come his way, but deep down he isn’t convinced they are possible, or worth the strife. So what does he do? Jesus told us: He takes the talents his Master gave him, and buries them in the yard. Or with Pilate he washes his hands. It’s their tiny souls that make European leaders submit to Islamic colonization: If you don’t love what’s really great about your country or treasure its spiritual heritage, and you’re not willing to sacrifice for the next generation, why not turn the place over to the jihadists who envy it? It’s not as if you’re using it. …

In between these icy poles is the fertile golden mean, the virtue we’re meant to practice: magnanimity, or “greatness of soul.” The great-souled person (like Edmund Campion or William Wilberforce) will fight like a tiger against his own worst impulses, and unjust actions by others, to obtain a truly good thing for himself or his family. When he sees someone else enjoying such things, he is glad on their behalf. He doesn’t view the world as a zero-sum squabble over a fixed quantity of happiness. In fact, it increases his sense of well-being and hope when he sees others prosper, even in areas where he might be lacking himself. The squat and the sedentary, the homely and halting, ought to look at the lithe and athletic with calm admiration; likewise, simple folk should be grateful that the wise are out there — so long as the brainy don’t also turn out to be bullies. When the wise are also humble, we look to them with thanks, as to wise pastors and teachers.

A great soul is what we need in a leader, especially in times as evil as these: someone who dares to hope for great things for America, but not at the unjust expense of other nations. Someone who wishes to lift up the poor, without tearing down the prosperous, to gain justice for minorities but not by maiming the majority. And of course, we need someone whose “great soul” expresses itself in smart and principled political action — someone who is brave, prudent, measured, and fair. (For you pointy-heads out there, I just rattled off Aristotle’s four Cardinal Virtues.)

The Seven Deadly Sins and the 2016 Election

With these things in mind, the 2016 presidential race comes into painfully sharp focus. The Democrats are simply and crudely trafficking in envy, though it masquerades as justice. When the thugs of #BlacklivesMatter terrorize a shopping mall, or the social engineers at HUD seed the suburbs with future crack houses, they aren’t really aiming at undoing any injustice. They’re just smashing things for the sake of it. Wasting millions that could have clothed and fed countless refugees close to their homes, and instead flying them across an ocean to collect American welfare benefits and throng American mosques — that’s not about saving lives. It’s a piece of moral grandstanding whose real intent is to “stick it” to frightened American Christians. Not settling for the Supreme Court’s power grab over marriage, gay activists have moved to bankrupt Christian bakers and florists who won’t cater their weddings — one could go on all day, all week, offering more depressing examples of what could be summed up best in a hashtag: #thelefttwiststheknife.

The Republican race is of far greater moral interest. What we’re seeing in the rise of insurgent candidates is an upsurge of anger at the apparent pusillanimity of the GOP establishment. The Republican Congress won majorities in both houses on promises of fighting the Democrats’ envious policies tooth and nail — as the Democrat House fought Ronald Reagan. Instead, we see in the latest omnibus budget deal an unconditional surrender of the “power of the purse,” the most crucial weapon for reigning in tyrants since the Magna Carta. (Franklin Graham was so disgusted by this deal that he quit the GOP.) For all the bluster and bravado, we are indeed funding the organ traffickers of Planned Parenthood, and the resettlement of unvetted Muslim refugees, and Obamacare, and the new embassy in Havana, and a long list of other radical Democrat policies, any one of which might have precipitated a government shutdown fight. Effectively we have no separation of powers, since every policy and priority is dictated by the president. When he’s a Democrat.

After dozens of such one-sided “compromises” over eight years, we are seeing a backlash against any candidate whom conservative voters consider pussilanimous. Competent managers like Jeb Bush, who in less radical times might have made persuasive runs for the White House, are rejected because they are “low energy,” and palpably not angry, not outraged at the left’s radical power grabs. Even when they differ with Democrats, it seems to be with a shrug, as if they were quibbling over details of policies that are fundamentally sound. When one side is thundering forward with savage self-righteous vigor, the other side cannot respond with halting, tentative efforts — or it will get steamrollered, as happened in the omnibus budget. Voters fear that the oncoming leftist juggernaut would flatten a pussilanimous candidate, and so they are not taking chances.

And many voters are going too far. Because it’s perfectly possible for conservatives to play the envy game. We can crave the cultural privileges that the left has seized for itself and its pet victim groups: the right to be thin-skinned, to sneer with contempt not just at the policies but the persons we disagree with, to fancy ourselves victims on trivial pretexts, to be tribalist and intolerant. We can indulge these malicious hobbies, on the pretext that it is “payback.” But the answer to a long run of pussilanimous leaders is not to find one who can harness the power of envy to our agenda. It’s to search out a great-souled man, who is strong enough to be angry when the good is gravely threatened, but can laugh off his enemy’s insults and remain the happy warrior. Let us pray for the gift of discernment, and for the grace to really want what is good. (For more from the author of “The GOP Needs a Candidate With a Huge Soul” please click HERE)

Howard County, Maryland Approves Muslim, Hindu, Asian Holidays in School Calendar

Maryland’s Howard County Board of Education has unanimously voted to add Muslim, Hindu, and Asian holidays as days in which students will be off.

“This vote is proof that it is indeed possible to accommodate the religious needs of multiple faith communities in diverse school districts,” said Council of American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) Maryland Outreach Manager Zainab Chaudry. “Religious pluralism is the hallmark of an integrated and inclusive society. We see that reflected in the Howard County Board of Education’s decision.”

CAIR is an unindicted co-conspirator in the Holy Land Foundation terror financing trial, and a designated terror organization in the United Arab Emirates.

“I am extremely pleased by the Board’s ability to discuss and unanimously agree to seek ways to recognize the diverse backgrounds of Howard County’s students and families,” said board of education chairwoman Christine O’Connor. “We want to do our best to find flexibility within the calendar to provide opportunities for all students to experience all cultures within our community.”

The Baltimore Sun reports the school district has always closed schools on state-mandated holidays and on the Jewish holidays of Yom Kippur and Rosh Hashanah. However, a recent proposal to keep schools open on the Jewish holidays and only allow school closures for those mandated by the state evoked significant public attention in December.
