This Is What China Tariffs Could Do for American Jobs

A 25 percent tariff on all imported goods from China would create more than 720,000 American jobs by 2024, a new study finds.

The United States would undergo a nationwide reshoring-jobs effort if it imposed a tariff on all Chinese imports, the latest study from Coalition for a Prosperous America (CPA) researchers Jeff Ferry and Steven Byers finds.

Ferry and Byers’ study reveals that an across-the-board 25 percent tariff on every good imported to the U.S. from China would “deliver a significant, sustained boost to the US economy” by creating 721,000 American jobs and adding $125 billion to the nation’s GDP by 2024.

“Our model demonstrates that across-the-board US tariffs on Chinese imports stimulate the US economy, increase US production and jobs, and lead to a reduction in US import costs over time,” Ferry said.

“This result is consistent with US experience in 2018 and early 2019 when tariffs on steel, aluminum, and other industries led to job creation in those sectors,” Ferry said. “The modeling results provide additional evidence that decoupling the US economy from China and its predatory trade and subsidy practices will make the US economy stronger, with more production, investment, and jobs.” (Read more from “This Is What China Tariffs Could Do for American Jobs” HERE)

Obama Administration CUT Video Feed During Russia Investigation Meetings

Comments made by Attorney General William Barr about extraordinary arrangements regarding the original handling of the Russia investigation may take on more significance in light of a previous report showing a high and unusual degree of compartmentalization in the Obama-era intelligence community’s initial intel set up of the Russia probe.

In an interview with Fox News that aired Friday, Barr commented that the intelligence community’s early handling of the Russia investigation may raise questions. He noted it was first handled at a “very senior level” and then by a “small group.” . . .

The thing that’s interesting about this is that this was handled at a very senior level of these departments. It wasn’t handled in the ordinary way that investigations or counterintelligence activities are conducted. It was sort of an ad hoc, small group — and most of these people are no longer with the FBI or the CIA or the other agencies involved. I think there’s a misconception out there that we know a lot about what happened. The fact of the matter is, Bob Mueller did not look at the government’s activities.

The number of Obama administration officials who were allowed access to the Russia intelligence was also highly limited, The Post reported. At first only four senior officials were involved: Brennan, Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, Attorney General Loretta Lynch and then-FBI Director James Comey. Their aides were all barred from attending the initial meetings, The Post stated. . .

Adding another layer of secrecy, the newspaper reported that when the closed Cabinet sessions on Russia began in the White House Situation Room in August, the video feed from the main room was cut off during the meetings. Dems Clash in Closed Meeting over Trump Impeachment

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is once again struggling to maintain control over her new majority’s caucus — even battling dissension among her own leadership team. Pelosi has already faced multiple rank-and-file insurrections on GOP-led motions to recommit, caved to pressure and lost a battle over condemning a freshman member’s anti-Semitism, decided to ignore her chamber’s budgeting requirements in order to sidestep endless intra-party spending battles, and recently watched as her party was forced to shelve (since revived) DREAM Act legislation due to internal squabbling over extending amnesty to people with criminal records. Her latest headache is on impeachment, which she’s opposed for months on tactical grounds.

Her rhetorical fence-straddling has been awkward and strained at times (what does this mean?), and now it appears as though there’s a growing chance that her delicate balancing act could be heading toward a breaking point (see update). In a closed-door meeting yesterday, top House Democrats reportedly clashed over the issue of pursuing impeachment against President Trump. Though Pelosi did not abandon her opposition to the idea, her stance came under siege from some typical allies:

More details, via Politico:

House Democratic leaders sparred internally on Monday over whether to begin an impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump, with Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her allies rejecting the call to move forward for now, according to multiple sources. Reps. David Cicilline of Rhode Island, Jamie Raskin of Maryland and Joe Neguse of Colorado — all members of Democratic leadership — pushed to begin impeachment proceedings during a leadership meeting in Pelosi’s office, said the sources. Pelosi and Reps. Rosa DeLauro of Connecticut, Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico, Hakeem Jeffries of New York and Cheri Bustos of Illinois — some of her key allies — rejected their calls, saying Democrats’ message is being drowned out by the fight over possibly impeaching Trump…

Relentless: Jerry Nadler Issues TWO MORE Subpoenas

By A Medium Corporation. House Judiciary Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) issued subpoenas to Annie Donaldson, former chief of staff for former White House counsel Don McGahn and for Hope Hicks, former White House Communications Director. The subpoenas were issued for testimony and documents related to the House Judiciary Committee’s ongoing investigation into obstruction of justice, public corruption, and other abuses of power by President Trump, his associates, and members of his Administration. The redacted version of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report documented alarming misconduct and obstruction of justice by President Trump. Donaldson and Hicks were critical witnesses to this behavior. (Read more from “Relentless: Jerry Nadler Issues TWO MORE Subpoenas” HERE)

Nadler Knows He’d Be ‘Completely Humiliated’ If He Challenged McGahn’s Refusal to Testify: Rep. McClintock

By Fox News. The House Judiciary Committee hearing scheduled for former White House counsel Don McGahn was “silly” and the committee’s chair knew he couldn’t challenge in court McGahn’s refusal to comply with a subpoena, Rep. Tom McClintock, R-Calif., said on Tuesday.

“The whole thing is a political exercise, and Jerry Nadler is not going to take this to court because he knows if he did, he would be completely humiliated,” McClintock said while appearing on Fox News’ “Outnumbered.”

“He wants the grievance, not the substance,” McClintock added. His comments came as Nadler vowed to “go to court” if needed in order to force testimony from McGahn. McGahn skipped the hearing after President Trump, who invoked executive privilege in ignoring subpoenas, told him not to attend.

“In short, the president took it upon himself to intimidate a witness who has a legal obligation to be here today,” Nadler said.

But McClintock told Fox News host Harris Faulkner that Trump’s actions were nothing new. “Pretty much every president since Harry Truman has instructed his subordinates to ignore congressional subpoenas and the courts have backed them up every single time,” he said. Massive Film Festival Features Gruesome Movie Poster About President Trump

The B-movie-style one-sheet shows a woman holding two decapitated heads, including one that looks like the commander-in-chief wearing his signature campaign headgear.

When a photograph of Kathy Griffin holding up an effigy of Donald Trump’s severed head hit the Internet May 31, 2017, life for the comedian was never the same. “I didn’t commit a crime,” she told The Hollywood Reporter the following year, following a months-long break from her career during which she attempted to manage the international scandal that, by the end, involved the FBI, a Secret Service investigation and a pummeling on social media. “I didn’t rape anybody. I didn’t assault anybody. I didn’t get a DUI.”

What she did was kickstart a politically charged dialogue that spread beyond the world of comedy that begged the question: How far is too far? A new movie project being presented during the Cannes Film Festival’s Market has added itself the conversation.

It’s called When Women Rule the World and the poster image — circulating at the Cannes Market and in trade publications including The Hollywood Reporter — features a bikini-clad woman (a Melania Trump-type character called Maria Putin, played by actress Anna Hera) holding two decapitated heads. One is bloodied up to look like Trump in a Make America Great Again hat and a shaggy blond wig. The other, a gray-skinned, bug-eyed zombie. “Meet the First Lady of the Future with her Heads of State,” reads the tagline for the film from writer-director-producer Sheldon Silverstein.

On the film’s official website, Silverstein describes himself as “an internationally accomplished” auteur who lived in Rome for 20 years and “worked with such notable directors as Sergio Leone and Federico Fellini, and was greatly influenced by these icons.” When Women Rule the World marks his directorial debut following producing credits include such projects as The Erotic Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, The Pumpkin Karver and Hazard Jack. State House Passes Bill for Chick-Fil-A and Libs Are Freaking Out

On Tuesday, the Texas House passed SB 1978, the so-called “Save Chick-fil-A” bill, engendering blowback from Democrats and LGBTQ activists. The bill passed 79-64 after passing the Texas Senate 19-12 last week. It now heads for the desk of Texas Governor Greg Abbott, who has left little doubt he will sign the bill into law.

On Monday, as CNN reported, Democratic Rep. Julie Johnson, a member of the Texas House’s LGBTQ caucus, opined that the bill was discriminatory, saying, “While I’m sure the intent of this bill is to protect individual freedoms, in reality it would provide a segue for individuals looking to circumvent the rules of the law in the name of religion. Private businesses could legally refuse service to families like mine based on the owners’ religious belief.”

Rep. Jessica Gonzalez, also a member of the LGBTQ caucus, spoke of the death of Muhlaysia Booker, a Dallas transgender woman who was shot and killed in East Dallas over the weekend, saying, “Her death occurred hours before 78 members of the Texas House of Representatives voted in favor of Senate Bill 1978, a bill that codifies discrimination under the guise of religious freedom. Ms. Booker’s death is a tragic reminder that bills like SB 1978 foment hatred and endanger the lives of all minority Texans. As the vice chair of the House LGBTQ caucus, I will continue to fight against any legislation that attacks Texans for who they love or how they identify.”

The women were countered by Republican state Rep. Matt Krause, the author of the House bill, who stated there’s “no discriminatory intent in (the bill) at all,” adding, “We want to make sure that if you give to the Salvation Army, you’re not labeled bigoted or discriminatory.”

The bill states, “Notwithstanding any other law, a governmental entity may not take any adverse action against any person based wholly or partly on the person’s membership in, affiliation with, or contribution, donation, or other support provided to a religious organization.” (Read more from “State House Passes a Bill for Chick-Fil-A and Libs Are Freaking Out” HERE)

Iran Has Reportedly Quadrupled Its Production of Enriched Uranium

Iranian nuclear officials are claiming that the country is quadrupling its production of enriched uranium.

The state-run IRNA news agency in Iran is claiming that Iran is increasing its uranium production and that the International Atomic Energy Agency had been alerted to this development. The Independent cited Iranian officials who insisted that the uranium would only be enriched to 3.67 percent purity. In order to be used in an atomic bomb, uranium purity needs to be at 90 percent.

At this increased rate of production, it won’t be long before Iran has a larger stockpile of enriched uranium than is permitted under the 2015 nuclear deal brokered by the Obama administration. While the United States pulled out of this deal in 2018, other signatories have tried to keep it going.

James Clapper, former President Barack Obama’s director of national intelligence, dismissed the announcement, telling the BBC that he did not think it was “necessary to go into panic mode yet.”

This announcement from Iran comes just two days after President Donald Trump tweeted, “If Iran wants to fight, that will be the official end of Iran. Never threaten the United States again!”

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif called Trump’s comments “genocidal taunts.”

National security adviser John Bolton also announced that the U.S. was sending a carrier strike group to the region “to send a clear and unmistakable message to the Iranian regime that any attack on United States interests or on those of our allies will be met with unrelenting force.”

Bolton said that this was “[i]n response to a number of troubling and escalatory indications and warnings” from Iran. (For more from the author of “Iran Has Reportedly Quadrupled Its Production of Enriched Uranium” please click HERE)

Race War of 1812

Multicultural War

The War of 1812 bicentennials passed with little fanfare in our corner of the Midwest, although it was a partly a contest for dominion over this region. The U.S. declared war against Great Britain that June, and it raged into the winter of 1815. It was no lark, and brought our fledgling republic to the verge of extinction.

American commanders anticipated danger at Fort Dearborn (Chicago), and ordered the evacuation of 148 soldiers, women and children that first August. But 500 British-allied Potawatomi braves ambushed them along the trail.

They killed 86, including two women and all 12 children. After downing one especially valiant defender, they cut out his heart and ate it, to absorb his courage. The Potawatomi marched their captives back to Fort Dearborn, which they burned to the ground on the following day.

Some of the ambushed Americans survived the battle, but not their captivity. Others were eventually ransomed. Whether it’s fair to call the battle a massacre or not, the Potawatomi attack helped galvanize white public opinion against pluralistic coexistence with Native American societies.

In the long run, winning the Battle of Fort Dearborn may have been the worst thing that could have happened to the Potawatomi. They were eventually dispossessed and expelled from their ancestral lands by white settlers who were unwilling to chance massacre of their loved ones every time a charismatic figure like Tecumseh or Tenskwatawa came along to appeal to Native American resentment.

In the meantime, British commanders induced some hasty frontier American surrenders elsewhere by playing “good cop, bad cop” regarding their Native American allies’ tendency toward massacre of their captives. But U.S. forces under William Henry Harrison deprived the British terror strategy of some of its bite when they hunted Tecumseh down in Canada and killed him at the Battle of the Thames in October 1813.

British Occupation of Washington

Native Americans weren’t the only ones burning U.S. facilities to the ground during the War of 1812, of course. British commander Robert Ross set the torch to Washington, including the White House. The British drove James Madison and his military commanders out of Washington, into what is now Montgomery County, Maryland.

The invaders occupied Washington before a King-sized storm damaged their fleet, extinguished their fires, and spun off a tornado that pitched two of their cannon into the air and tumbled them down Constitution Avenue. The British were haughty and stubborn people but they could take a hint, and abandoned our capitol 26 hours after their arrival.

Baltimore put up a much stiffer defense than Washington. Militia commander Samuel Smith, 62, assembled a force of 13,000 patriots and positioned them in a line of strong fortifications. When Ross attacked, Americans killed him, along with 300 of his fellow invaders. The British then called off their land attack, and called their war ships up near the coast to bombard Fort McHenry, which was all that kept the invaders off Baltimore’s docks.

The bombardment continued all day, and then all night. The fabled British fleet pounded Baltimore like an anvil: rockets, bombs, “a firelit clang,” as historian Bruce Catton wrote, “of broken metal against masonry.” And yet, when morning dawned, despite heavy smoke, Francis Scott Key could see that our flag was still there.

The Opportunism of Domestic Enemies

The valor in Baltimore was countered by a nauseating stench of Federalist treason to the north, where the Massachusetts legislature had called a wartime convention of New England states to undermine President Madison. Vermont and New Hampshire rejected the call but Rhode Island and Connecticut, to their shame, accepted.

Some New England fire-breathers were already advocating secession. If the British didn’t defeat the U.S. on the battlefield, they were confident they could persuade the New England states to secede from the war-torn republic.

The Federalists deliberated in secret at their convention, passed long-winded resolutions and demanded a series of Constitutional amendments, but American public opinion had turned against them. It was inexcusable that the Federalists had leveraged the wartime crisis as a partisan opportunity, and the American people were finished with them. When the party dissolved shortly thereafter, most Americans considered it good riddance to bad rubbish.

Over 200 years later, the Baltimore Ravens football team traveled to London to play a game. The American athletes stood respectfully for their hosts’ national anthem, “God Save the Queen.” But when their own “Star-Spangled Banner” was played, these men of Baltimore knelt in protest.

One broadcaster, a recently retired Ravens player, went onto the field to kneel in solidarity with the younger millionaires against our country. Their protest is based on a claim of disproportionate American police violence against Black men. It is factually false. It has been statistically disproved. But in postmodern Leftist culture, it is enough to self-congratulate and to make fact-free claims of moral high ground. The more emphatic their protest, the truer their accusation.

I hear the clanging of broken metal against masonry again. There will always be bombardment and conspiracy. Yet after Tecumseh and Robert Ross, after ESPN and Nike and Colin Kaepernick, after Ray Lewis and Eric Reid, our flag is still there.

Long may it wave over a land of free and brave Americans.

Illegal Alien Teens Charged with Murder Were Previously Released by Sanctuary

There seems to be a full-court press over every single illegal alien who dies of natural causes after making the perilous journey over our border. Yet there is almost no coverage even of the most high-profile murders committed by illegal aliens, including by the “children” coming through our border from Central America and being released into our communities.

Last week, three teens, including two confirmed illegal aliens from El Salvador, were charged with first-degree murder in Prince George’s County, Maryland, for allegedly butchering a 14-year-old with a bat and machete. Josue Rafael Fuentes-Ponce, 16, and Joel Ernesto Escobar, 17, both gang members, were arrested on May 16 by PG County police for the murder of 14-year-old Ariana Funes-Diaz in a wooded area in Riverdale. Shockingly, a 14-year-old girl, Cynthia Hernandez-Nucamendi, was also arrested for the murder last week.

Gang-style murders committed by illegal aliens have become very common both on the Maryland and Virginia sides of Washington D.C., as these counties are saturated with illegal aliens from Central America who are often connected to MS-13. Yet nobody in the local media reported on their immigration status until now.

In response to a media request from CR last week regarding the immigration status of those charged, ICE has now confirmed that the two male suspects were both illegal aliens from El Salvador who were released into the country – one as part of a family unit and one as an unaccompanied alien child. It turns out both were arrested for attempted murder almost exactly a year ago, and both were released by the PG County criminal justice system in defiance of an ICE detainer.

ICE has confirmed that Josue Rafael Fuentes-Ponce was first apprehended as part a family unit in Texas on December 23, 2015. “They were ultimately paroled into the U.S. pending the outcome of the immigration case,” said ICE spokeswoman Justine Whelan in a statement. An immigration judge ordered Fuentes removed in absentia on March 16, 2017, but like so many of them, it was too late. He had already disappeared.

Escobar had a parallel experience, except that because his family smuggled him in alone, he was resettled as an unaccompanied alien child. “On Aug. 23, 2016, immigration officials encountered unlawfully present El Salvadoran national Joel Ernesto Escobar as an unaccompanied juvenile near McAllen, Texas. Escobar was transferred to the custody of the Office of Refugee Resettlement, and later released to a family member in the Washington, D.C. area,” said Whelan.

The fact that, once again, illegal aliens released into our country as part of a smuggling operation were allowed to remain and allegedly commit murder would be tragic enough, but that is not the end of the story.

Both Fuentes and Escobar were charged with attempted murder almost exactly one year ago in PG County. ICE previously lodged a detainer against each of them on May 11, 2018, with the Prince George’s County Detention Center. At the time, Fuentes was arrested “for attempted first-degree murder and related charges” and Escobar was arrested “for attempted first-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, participation in gang activity and other related charges,” according to Whelan.

In the case of Fuentes, the case was remanded to juvenile court, after which “the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services failed to honor that detainer and Fuentes was released without notification to ICE.” In the case of Escobar, he was released by county police “without notification to ICE.” Escobar was convicted of conspiracy to commit robbery on March 15, 2019, still without any notification to ICE.

PG County does not allow ICE in its jails, so ICE has no way of knowing when these individuals are released.

It wasn’t until their high-profile arrest on May 16 that ICE was again aware of their whereabouts, now with another teenager dead. “As law enforcement officers, we must continue to serve and protect the American public and act in the interest of public safety first,” said Baltimore Field Office Director Diane Witte in a statement. “These individuals had demonstrated violent criminal behavior before, and because they were released in spite of the lawful detainer, they were afforded an opportunity to take a life.”

I’ve reported on numerous cases where illegal aliens arrested for murder had previously been released after charges of DUI, assault, or drug trafficking. But to ignore an ICE detainer after an initial charge of attempted murder is a new level for local sanctuaries thumbing their noses at federal immigration officials. Attempted murder is hard to dismiss as “low-level” charges. One has to wonder, if they are not honoring detainers on attempted murder charges and are not notifying ICE of the arrestees’ release, how many other murders, robberies, assaults, drunk driving incidents, and gang crimes could have been avoided? It’s quite evident that these crimes would certainly not impel local authorities to cooperate with ICE if an attempted murder charge is not enough. Influencing Elections? Ha — Russians Are Coming Right to Our Border

Our political system has been paralyzed over the past year with the incessant news cycle on Russian influence in our elections. Anything and everything related to Mueller’s Russia probe has forced our border crisis to take a back seat to the implied threat of “the Russians are coming.” Well, according to border experts who’ve spoken with CR, Russians are showing up on our southern border. Will the broader media and the politicians now take an interest in the border?

Jaeson Jones, a retired captain from the Texas Department of Public Safety’s Intelligence and Counterterrorism Division, warns that the cartels in charge of the plazas at the border are now helping to smuggle Russians into south Texas. “In the last few weeks in south Texas, Border Patrol agents have apprehended several Russians being smuggled between the ports of entry by the Gulf Cartel,” said Jones in an exclusive interview with CR.

Although Jones is retired from his counter-cartel work for Texas law enforcement, he is in regular contact with border officials and cartel informants and continues to train local, federal, and state law enforcement on the latest trends, tradecraft, and capabilities of the cartels. Jones is hearing that the smugglers are strategically using the masses of Central Americans showing up in the Rio Grande Valley, often up to 2,000 per day, to carefully bring over Russians in small, unassuming numbers.

“The Gulf Cartel is currently staging small groups of two and three Russians throughout the Reynosa plaza to be smuggled into the country illegally,” said Jones, who used to manage the daily operations of the Texas Rangers’ Border Security Operations Center (BSOC). “This type of smuggling activity is utilized to move what the cartel deems high-value people. We see this activity often when smuggling special interest aliens (SIAs). Those are people who come from a country with a terrorism nexus. This is due to their ability to pay more money to be crossed illegally.”

Current government officials working on border issues have confirmed a similar trend of aliens coming from countries of terrorism concern or threats of espionage. Last week, I interviewed Jack Staton, special agent in charge of Homeland Security Investigations’ (HSI) El Paso division. He observed that there is nothing unique about Central Americans using the loopholes and lapse in coverage at the border. He noted that because we’re not able to detain these people, they’re incentivized to come from all over the world, including Russia.

“Along with the continued flow, you’re going to have every nationality do it. It’s not just going to be Central Americans. We’ve seen non-Central American family units also coming up. We’ve seen families from Turkey and from Brazil. In our area here, we’ve seen Turkish nationals coming in, we’ve seen individuals from Angola, the Congo, we’ve seen individuals from Russia. … We’ve seen a lot of Brazilians coming in; many of the Brazilians are coming in as families, as are Turkish families. We’ve also seen a major influx of Cubans coming into our area here.”

Russia has a robust presence in Latin America. Border agents are tied down at the border, and the secondary checkpoints in the El Paso sector, which includes all of New Mexico, are completely unmanned. This means that any suspicious immigration activity, such as people coming from non-traditional migrant countries up the main highways, will go unchecked.

Staton noted that the secondary checkpoints were actually set up more for immigration enforcement than for drugs. “They’re not narcotics checkpoints. That’s a secondary function of them, in the sense that people have to stop for an immigration inspection. And then, all of a sudden, agents might find narcotics.”

In a recent interview with Staton’s counterpart at the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in El Paso, Kyle Williamson, he also expressed concern that countries of security concern are exploiting the vulnerabilities. When I asked Williamson whether he thinks there is a looming threat from terrorists coming into the country with the knowledge that our agents are tied down at the border and that the secondary checkpoints remain unmanned, he responded emphatically, “Yes, it’s definitely a threat.”

“Let’s just put it this way, the cartels are an international organization. It’s a real threat, it’s a prevalent threat, and they do have their associations with groups like Hezbollah, with Afghans, and with radical terrorist organizations,” warned Williamson, who also served in the DEA’s offices in the Middle East overseeing narco-terrorism enforcement. “What that does is effectively move those borders right up to the United States. Those cartels link the borders. Just like they use their resources, their technology, their criminal enterprise to conduct criminal activities, they can use those resources to assist terrorists as well.”

Williamson sees no reason why national security should be any less affected by open borders than vulnerability to drug trafficking. “When you look at a terrorist organization, obviously they capitalize on chaos. When your borders are in chaos, the same way the drug traffickers exploit that to move the drugs through while border agents are moved away from the field, the terrorists have the same knowledge how to exploit the situation.” So what are Russians being moved in for?

Sheriff David Black of Otero County, which has two checkpoints now unmanned thanks to the surge in migration, was concerned that the highways coming up from El Paso into his county may serve as a conduit for national security threats. “If someone wants to get in to do harm to this country, there is nothing stopping them whatsoever,” said the sheriff. “They don’t even have to risk the hardship of coming over the rugged Mesa area with a load and a gallon of water when they can come straight up our highway without anyone stopping them.”

It’s no wonder the Supreme Court has said, “The right to [exclude aliens] stems not alone from legislative power but is inherent in the executive power to control the foreign affairs of the nation (Knauff v. Shaughnessy, 1950). The vulnerability of a broken asylum system has a cascading effect on numerous diplomatic and security issues not just with Mexico but with many adversaries in the world. If the president’s power over immigration isn’t enough to justify shutting down asylum processing at the border, perhaps the ubiquitous fear of “Russian interference” will spawn the political actors to act.
