Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has officially suspended his 2024 presidential campaign, making the announcement on the eve of the New Hampshire primary. The decision comes as DeSantis endorses former President Donald Trump, lauding him as a “superior” candidate over the incumbent President Joe Biden.
The 45-year-old Republican governor took to the X social media platform to share a video message with his supporters, expressing gratitude for their unwavering support. “Nobody worked harder,” DeSantis declared, emphasizing that his campaign had left no stone unturned. Reflecting on his campaign, he asserted, “I’m proud to have delivered on 100 percent of his promises, and I will not stop now.”
DeSantis acknowledged differences with Trump. However, he underscored that, in his view, Trump stands as a superior alternative to the current incumbent, Joe Biden. “A majority of Republican primary voters want to give Donald Trump another chance,” DeSantis stated, citing the perceived challenges Trump faced during his previous presidency.
The governor voiced concerns over relentless resistance and ongoing legal battles faced by Trump, accusing Democrats of employing “lawfare” to undermine the former president. “While I’ve had disagreements with Donald Trump, Trump is superior to the current incumbent, Joe Biden – that is clear,” DeSantis asserted, explaining his decision to throw his support behind the former president.
In a bold statement, DeSantis expressed the need for a departure from the “old Republican guard of yesteryear,” indicating a desire for a shift in the party’s direction. He took a swipe at fellow Republican Nikki Haley, labeling her as representing “warmed-over corporatism.”
DeSantis’s exit from the presidential race follows his second-place finish in the Iowa caucuses, where he secured 20.1% of the vote. The decision comes just days after the Iowa caucuses and sets the stage for a potentially dramatic realignment within the Republican Party as it navigates the political landscape leading up to the 2024 election.
