What to Watch as SCOTUS Considers Whether Colorado Can Ban Trump From Its Ballot

On Thursday morning, the Supreme Court will hear oral arguments from attorneys representing former President Donald Trump and those representing a handful of Coloradans who brought legal action in their state that culminated in the state Supreme Court ruling that the 45th president and current 2024 frontrunner was banned from being listed on the primary ballot.

According to the ruling in Colorado, Trump — due to the events of January 6 — is ineligible to be president based on Section 3 of the 14th Amendment that states no one “shall be a Senator or Representatives in Congress, or elector of President and Vice president, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any State” if they had “previously taken an oath as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any State legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any State, to support the Constitution of the United States,” but subsequently “engaged in insurrection or rebellion” against the government.

That decision at the state level barred Colorado’s secretary of state from listing Trump’s name on the primary ballot but put a hold on that action until the Supreme Court had a chance to rule on its decision. And while the Supreme Court is just considering the Colorado ruling, the outcome will be relevant to other states, such as Maine, where the secretary of state booted Trump from her state’s ballot citing the same provision of the 14th Amendment, as well as nearly one dozen other states where the former president’s eligibility is being challenged.

Beginning at 10:00 a.m. ET on Thursday, the Supreme Court will hear arguments from both sides in Trump v. Anderson and, while the exact timeline is unknown, the Court’s decision in the case could be announced as soon as a few days later. What is known is that this is the biggest election case to be decided by the Supreme Court since 2000’s Bush v. Gore — and is likely to set off even more calls from leftists who want to see SCOTUS dismantled, its bench packed, or its authority and role undermined. Iran-Backed Groups Attacked U.S. Bases Three Times Since Major Counterstrikes, Killing U.S. Allies

Iran-backed militant groups have attacked U.S. troops in Iraq and Syria three times since the U.S. launched massive retaliatory strikes on Friday, killing six partner troops at one of the bases, according to reports.

The U.S. struck 85 targets connected to Iran-backed militants in Iraq and Syria and the Iranian military command that oversees Tehran’s proxy operations on Friday in response to a Jan. 28 suicide drone attack that caused the first U.S. fatalities since the escalation of attacks. U.S.-backed forces confirmed an attack on Sunday at the Al-Omar oilfield in Syria on Sunday killed six Kurdish fighters, Reuters reported.

An explosive-laden drone crashed into the training academy on the U.S. base, resulting “in the martyrdom of six of our Commando fighters,” Farhad Shami, a spokesperson for the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) said in a social media post, Reuters reported.

The Islamic Resistance in Iraq — an umbrella organization considered responsible for the deadly attack on U.S. troops — on Monday claimed responsibility for the attack.

Iranian proxies have attacked U.S. troops in Iraq, Syria and Jordan 169 times since Oct. 17, a Department of Defense (DOD) official said Monday, Politico reported. One attack took place at Mission Support Site Euphrates in Syria on Feb. 3, with no damage or injuries reported. Former Fox News host Tucker Carlson has triggered a frenzy of speculation after being spotted in Moscow over the weekend, with people on social media anticipating a potential exclusive interview with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Carlson’s unexpected presence in the Russian capital has set social media abuzz with speculation about the purpose of his unannounced visit.

Carlson arrived in Moscow on February 1st and has spent the last three days in the city. The conservative commentator was first observed boarding a Turkish Airlines plane from Istanbul to Moscow’s Vnukovo airport. Carlson was also photographed attending the ballet “Spartacus” at the renowned Bolshoi Theater in Moscow over the weekend.

Social media posts have fueled speculation among conservatives especially, with some suggesting that the visit could be linked to a potential interview with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Previously, Carlson had expressed his intention to interview Putin during his tenure at Fox News, but he claimed the U.S. government intervened, preventing the meeting. Carlson previously alleged the U.S. government was monitoring him.

“I tried to interview Vladimir Putin, and the U.S. government stopped me,” Carlson stated in an interview with the Swiss publication Die Weltwoche in September. “By the way, nobody defended me. I don’t think there was anybody in the news media who said, ‘Wait a second. I may not like this guy, but he has a right to interview anyone he wants, and we have a right to hear what Putin says.'”

Senate Border Bill Outrages Conservatives: Politicians Warn of Exploitation by Criminal Cartels and ‘Lawless’ Mayorkas

The Senate’s release of the long-awaited “Emergency National Security Supplemental Appropriations Act, 2024” has ignited a fierce debate, with House Homeland Security Chairman Mark Green (R-TN) leading the charge against what he views as a perilous compromise for Republican lawmakers. Green asserts that the bill, intended to address Biden’s border issues, will be exploited by criminal cartels, illegal aliens, and what he deems as the “lawless” approach of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

Green, a vocal critic of Mayorkas, insists that any border deal must eliminate the “perverse incentives” created by Democrats, who, according to Green, has pursued an unlawful agenda of mass catch-and-release and a failure to remove those without lawful basis to remain in the country. The House Homeland Security Chairman, who has spearheaded a year-long investigation into Mayorkas, recently saw articles of impeachment referred to the House, accusing the Secretary of neglecting immigration law enforcement.

Green contends that President Biden and Secretary Mayorkas possess the necessary tools to secure the border but have intentionally chosen not to do so. He alleges that they have taken steps to reverse successful border policies implemented during the Trump administration, contributing to what Green calls a “historic border crisis.”

Green pledged to vehemently oppose any deal that surrenders to the perceived inevitability of illegal immigration, emphasizing the need for an administration that prioritizes the enforcement of the law. He argues that bipartisan majorities in Congress have already granted the executive branch the authority required to secure the border, and additional concessions would only serve to be exploited by criminal cartels and, in his words, “lawless officials” like Secretary Mayorkas.

The Senate bill, marketed as the “Emergency National Security Supplemental Appropriations Act, 2024,” has raised eyebrows for its 370-page content, released just days before the scheduled vote. The accompanying multi-billion dollar appropriations bill aims to fund resources for registering, releasing, transporting, and housing migrants across American cities and communities. Democrats are positioning the bill as a solution to President Biden’s declining poll numbers.

However, the controversy deepens as reports suggest that the bill’s provisions may permit up to 8,500 migrants to cross the border in a single day without triggering an emergency declaration. Despite earlier assurances from Senator James Lankford (R-OK) dismissing claims of allowing 5,000 or more migrants per day as “absolutely absurd,” the bill’s text appears to contradict those promises.

Rising Temperatures, Rising Risks: CDC Warns of Surge in ‘Flesh-Eating’ Infections Along East Coast

In the aftermath of the scorching heat waves that swept across the United States during the summer of 2023, alarming reports from LiveScience reveal a sudden surge in severe “flesh-eating” infections along the East Coast. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has raised concerns about Vibrio vulnificus, a deadly bacterial species found in coastal waters, attributing the increase in infections to the record-breaking temperatures.

The CDC emphasizes that infections with Vibrio vulnificus can occur when a wound comes into contact with raw or undercooked seafood, its juices, or drippings, as well as with saltwater or brackish water. This can lead to life-threatening wound infections, and approximately one in five infected individuals may succumb to the illness within just a day or two. The bacteria can cause necrotizing fasciitis, commonly known as a “flesh-eating” infection, if it enters an open wound.

The latest CDC report highlights the impact of Vibrio vulnificus infections during July-August 2023, with 11 reported cases in North Carolina (seven), Connecticut (two), and New York (two). The median age of the patients was 70 years, with underlying conditions such as diabetes, cancer, heart disease, history of alcoholism, and hematologic disease prevalent among those infected. Six patients experienced septic shock or died, with all fatalities having at least one underlying condition. While the infections cannot be directly attributed to the heat, the CDC suggests a possible correlation.

“As coastal water temperatures increase, V. vulnificus infections are expected to become more common,” states the report. The CDC urges individuals to take preventive measures, including avoiding wound contact with brackish water, saltwater, and raw seafood, as well as thoroughly cooking oysters and other seafood before consumption.

Nikki Haley Walks Back Claim That Texas Can Secede From U.S.

Former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley walked back comments she made last week when she suggested that the state of Texas could secede from the U.S. if it wanted to.

During an interview with The Breakfast Club on Wednesday, Haley said that “if Texas decides they want to do that, they can do that.”

“If that whole state says, ‘We don’t want to be part of America anymore,’ I mean, that’s their decision to make,” she continued, later adding: “Let’s talk about what’s reality. Texas isn’t going to secede.”

During a Sunday interview with Dana Bash on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Haley walked back those comments when asked if she really believed that “individual states have the right to leave the USA.”

“No one is talking about seceding. That’s not an issue at all,” she responded. “What we are talking about the fact is, here you have Governor Abbott and the people of Texas, who just want to be kept safe. They’re putting up barbed wire to keep people coming in. And the idea that the federal government is wanting to sue them and cut that barbed wire, when we’re trying to make sure that we keep people out, that’s a huge mistake.”

‘Use Your Privilege’: Air Force Promotes All-Day ‘Allyship’ Training

The Air Force offers an eight-hour workshop on resolving unidentified biases through “allyship,” which it described as actions taken to reduce prejudice, according to materials obtained by the Daily Caller News Foundation.

It’s unclear from the slides, facilitator guide and participant handouts obtained by the DCNF via Freedom of Information Act whether the workshop, entitled “Mitigating Bias Awareness Through Allyship,” is completely optional, or how many personnel among the Air Force and Space Force have completed it. Air Force Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) leaders have highlighted the course to support a renewed effort to engineer greater racial, ethnic and gender diversity in the force.

“Behaviors that are part of Allyship include changing to more inclusive use of language, and combating forms of prejudice against perceived outgroups such as racism, ableism, xenophobia, or other forms of discrimination. Outcomes of Allyship considered to be desirable by proponents include greater inclusion in the workplace and empowerment of outgroups,” the introduction to the course states.

The objective of the workshop is to “identify barriers to innovation,” according to the document. It was created on the premise that a focus on DEI promotes “higher talent/retention, reputation/responsibility, increased financial performance, and increased innovation and group performance” in the Air Force, just as it allegedly does in private corporations.

An unnamed Air Force captain helped develop the course after working with Apple on the company’s version of the course, according to the document. “Capt. [redacted] had the opportunity to participate in the program Education with industry and work with Apple during that time. A lot of the content came from Apple’s I&D team and is delivered to corporate Apple on a routine basis. Patrick Mahomes Sr. Arrested on DWI Charge 8 Days Before Super Bowl

Patrick Mahomes Sr., the father of superstar Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and a former Mets pitcher, was arrested Saturday in Tyler, Texas, on a charge of DWI for the third time or more, according to jail records.

Mahomes Sr. was arrested eight days before the younger Mahomes is set to play in Super Bowl LVIII against the 49ers in Las Vegas on Sunday.

In 2018, Mahomes Sr. received his second DWI charge and served 40 days in jail on weekends in 2019 and 2020.

Mahomes Sr., 53, played 11 seasons in MLB, pitching for the Mets in the 1999 and 2000 seasons.

The elder Mahomes has been supporting his son during the playoffs and told WFAN how, although he has sat in a suite with Taylor Swift before, he wasn’t with her during the divisional round against the Bills and wouldn’t be for the AFC Championship game against the Ravens, either. Vets Persecuted Under Vax Mandate See Double Standard in Defsec Milley Wanting ‘Privacy’

Members of the military who were forced to reveal to commanders their COVID-19 vaccination status in order to keep their jobs see a double standard in Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin hiding his hospitalization from his boss, colleagues, and the American public for nearly a week and facing no consequences.

At a press conference Thursday, Austin repeatedly said he did not tell the commander in chief or colleagues due to his desire for privacy.

“I was being treated for prostate cancer. The news shook me, and I know that it shakes so many others, especially in the Black community. It was a gut punch, and frankly, my first instinct was to keep it private. I don’t think it’s news that I’m a pretty private guy,” he said, adding, “But I’ve learned from this experience. Taking this kind of job means losing some of the privacy that most of us expect.”

He mentioned his privacy again, saying, “Cancer, period, is — is very private,” and argued that his race was a factor.

Former CIA Employee Sentenced to 40 Years Behind Bars for Largest Data Leak in Agency’s History

A former CIA employee has been sentenced to 40 years behind bars after executing the largest data leak in the agency’s history. The employee worked for the CIA from 2012 to 2016 as a software engineer in the Center for Cyber Intelligence, according to a report released by the U.S. Attorney’s Office of the Southern District of New York.

Joshua Schulte, 35, was previously accused of releasing classified data to Wikileaks in 2016 and was subsequently convicted in 2022 of illegally gathering and transmitting national defense information and obstructing a criminal investigation and grand jury proceeding.

USA Today reported that Schulte was convicted of espionage, child pornography, computer hacking, contempt of court, and making false statements to the FBI in separate trials. Schulte’s sentencing took place in New York federal court after three trials that concluded on March 9, 2020, July 13, 2022, and September 12, 2023, according to federal records.

U.S. Attorney Damian Williams said, “Joshua Schulte betrayed his country by committing some of the most brazen, heinous crimes of espionage in American history.”

“He caused untold damage to our national security in his quest for revenge against the CIA for its response to Schulte’s security breaches while employed there,” Williams continued.
