Snapchat Selfie Solves Teenage Murder in Pennsylvania

Photo Credit: Tribune-Review A selfie photograph led police to charge a teenager in connection with the Wednesday shooting death of another teen in Jeannette, according to authorities.

Westmoreland County District Attorney John Peck confirmed late Friday night that Maxwell Morton, 16, was charged as an adult in the shooting death of Ryan Mangan.

The alleged selfie obtained by police showed Morton posing in front of Mangan’s body. A woman contacted police Thursday after her son received the Snapchat photo from Morton, police said . . .

The selfie “depicted the victim sitting in the chair with a gunshot wound to the face,” according to a police affidavit. “It also depicts a black male taking the selfie with his face facing the camera and the victim behind the actor. The photo had the name ‘Maxwell’ across the top” . . .

Morton is charged with criminal homicide and murder in the first degree, in addition to one count of possession of a firearm by a minor, according to court documents. He was denied bail Friday night. (Read more about the teenage murder in Pennsylvania HERE)

Alaska Conservationists Concerned With Cruise Ship Rules

Photo Credit: APTowering cruise ships, sometimes four at a time, sit at port in Juneau at the peak of summer, delivering tourists important to the economy of this and other southeast Alaska communities. But some conservationists worry about what the ships could be leaving in Alaska waters and are fighting proposed new rules for the discharge of treated wastewater . . .

Over the years, Alaska has rolled back provisions of a 2006 citizen initiative that called for cruise ship wastewater to meet water quality standards at the point of discharge. In 2013, for example, the Legislature struck that discharge requirement, saying instead that wastewater cannot be discharged in a way that violates applicable state or federal law.

The 2013 law allowed for mixing zones, where wastewater can be diluted into the water, if ships meet certain standards for treatment of discharge. The change followed a debated preliminary report from a science advisory panel that found none of the advanced wastewater treatment systems on ships operating in Alaska waters could consistently meet water quality standards at the point of discharge for four “constituents of concern:” ammonia, copper, nickel and zinc.

The proposed general permit, under which ships can apply to be covered, are based on that law. (Read more about the concerns from the Alaska conservationists HERE)

Obama Admin. Rewarding Illegal Aliens with Tens of Thousands in Earned Income Tax Credits

By Daniel Halper. President Barack Obama has promoted his recent executive action on immigration by arguing that he’s only deferring action – holding off on enforcement of the current immigration laws until an immigration reform he approves of passes Congress. But that’s not really true; in fact there’s a way for illegal immigrants immediately to receive “amnesty bonuses,” as Senator Ben Sasse of Nebraska terms it.

Here’s how. A recent Homeland Security Committee hearing on immigration revealed an alarming consequence of President Obama’s executive amnesty—that illegal immigrants with deferred status may be able to receive the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). Moreover, this person, who is here in the U.S. unlawfully, could be able to file an amended tax return for up to the last three tax years, possibly receiving upwards of $24,000 in tax credits.

The discovery was made by Eileen J. O’Connor, a tax lawyer and the former head of the tax division of the United States Department of Justice, who used her congressional testimony in front of the Senate Homeland Security Committee to explain it. “The law makes a social security number a requirement of eligibility to receive the earned income credit,” O’Connor explained.

“But in 1999, the Chief Counsel’s office of IRS ruled (in a non-binding, non-precedential way, but no one but the IRS pays attention to those disclaimers) that when a person receives a social security number, he can file amended returns to claim the credit for the three preceding years during which he did not. The logic is puzzling: the credit is not available if you don’t have a social security number, but you can receive it retroactively for years during which you did not qualify for it because you didn’t have a social security number.”

Senator Sasse, who along with Senator Ron Johnson has written a letter addressed to the inspector general of the U.S. Treasury Department, has released a statement commenting on the “amnesty bonuses.” (Read more about Obama rewarding illegal aliens HERE)

As Employment Increases For Foreign-Workers, it Decreases For Native-Born Americans

By Caroline May. In the months and years since the recession began in December 2007, foreign-born workers have experienced a net increase in employment, while native-born Americans have experienced a net loss.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics released updated employment data Friday.

The new BLS figures reveal that since the start of the recession in 2007 — which is said to have ended in June 2009 — the number of foreign workers employed in the United States rose by 1.7 million.

In December 2007 the number of foreign-born workers was 22,810,000 by January 2009 the number has increased to 24,553,000.

Meanwhile the number of American-born workers employed decreased by 1.5 million, from 123,524,000 to 121,999,000. (Read more from this story HERE)

Corruption: Seven Congressmen (Including Mark Begich) Who Joined Lobbying Firms Less Than a Month After Leaving Office

Less than a month after leaving office, at least five former House members and one U.S. senator are already on the payroll at firms that make millions lobbying their congressional colleagues. The findings, provided to Vocativ by the Center for Responsive Politics, a government watchdog group, also show that a second senator who left office at the beginning of January, Alaska’s Mark Begich, took the extra step of starting his own public affairs consulting firm, which has already secured clients in health care and aviation.

While Washington’s contentious revolving door spins in perpetuum—allowing a stream of money, influence and access to flow seamlessly between the private and public sectors—the speed with which these public servants have offered themselves up to big business may raise a few eyebrows . . .

By law, ex-House members are required to wait one year before they can officially lobby lawmakers on the Hill, while former senators must wait twice as long. Many, however, are able to work around those requirements at firms by signing on as consultants, counsel and strategic advisors, as a recent analysis by CRP and the Sunlight Foundation shows. That study’s conclusion: “The many loopholes limiting who can lobby whom in Washington and whether that lobbying must be disclosed to the public make a hunk of Swiss cheese look like the Berlin Wall.” (Read more about the congressmen who joined lobbying firms HERE)

The homeowner crossed the street to the public sidewalk outside the school where Created Equal had set up. Pro-Life Group Starting Campaign to Protest Congress

By Kellan Howell. On the heels of the annual March for Life in Washington, a group of pro-life activists are seeking to enlist thousands of Americans in a massive mail protest to Congress.

Organizers of Life Envelope Day, previously called Red Envelope Day, plan to flood the congressional post office with millions of empty red envelopes representing aborted children on March 22, 60 days after the anniversary of the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision that made it legal for women to have abortions in the U.S.

“Electronic petitions work but they are not as impressive as what we do with physical mail,” said Rich Lepoutre, one of the organizers behind the event.

The organizers have created a Web site called www.lifeenvelopeday.com for Americans to get the materials they need to push their message to Congress. (Read more from this story HERE)

Children Were Hunted Down and Killed Trying to Escape ‘Rape Dungeon’ in Florida [+video]

Photo Credit: Latest Researchers have released chilling details about a Florida reform school for boys this week, including evidence of ‘rape dungeons’ that were used to abuse and murder children, the Daily News reports.

Anthropologists from the University of South Florida are beginning to uncover the disturbing stories of children who were abused and murdered at Arthur G. Dozier School in Marianna. The researchers have found the remains of 51 individuals, along with other materials, such as syringes, drug bottles and even a water cooler holding a dead dog buried in the cemetery next to the school.

In an attempt to uncover as much of the story as possible, university researchers are going through old records, newspaper articles and interviewing families to try to piece together the school’s painful past . . .

Researchers say the school did not report every death that occurred and did not submit death certificates in many cases. In their interviews with former inmates and school employees, they also learned of the ‘rape dungeon’ where young boys were sexually assaulted by those charged to care for them.

Some of the boys were murdered after they tried to escape the school. Robert Hewitt escaped in 1960 and hid in his family’s house near the school. Relatives came home one day to find the boy had been shot dead with his father’s shotgun, which was lying across his body. (Read more about the uncovered ‘rape dungeon’ HERE)

These Experts Will Tell You Where Oil Prices are Headed

By Bloomberg Business. The outlook on oil prices is clear: Oil will crash. Unless prices surge. Definitely one or the other.

Crude just had the biggest two-week gain in 17 years, but it’s still about 50 percent cheaper than it was in June. The situation is volatile, and forecasts are all over the place — from $30 a barrel predicted by the president of Goldman Sachs to as high as $200 a barrel seen by the head of OPEC . . .

What’s an investor to think? In 2015, the average price is likely to be anywhere from $35 to $80, according to a Bloomberg Intelligence survey of 86 investment specialists. That’s a pretty big range. (Read more about the increasing oil prices HERE)

Oil Prices Post Biggest One-Week Gain Since 2011

By Nicole Friedman and Georgi Kantchev. Oil prices posted their largest weekly percentage gain in almost four years as traders looked past the current world-wide glut of crude to focus on signals of future production cuts.

Some market participants said oil prices, which have fallen 52% in the past seven months, could be bottoming out as producers have reacted to the low prices by cutting expenditures and reducing drilling activity. But many analysts caution that the global oil market still is oversupplied and there are few signs of a major uptick in demand, so prices could slip yet again.

The market was volatile this past week, posting a one-month high Tuesday before falling Wednesday and then regaining those losses by week’s end. (Read more from this story HERE)

Amazing: Mother in Coma For Two Months Gives Birth to Healthy Baby Girl

By Fox News. When a young, expectant mother was hit by a train, her unborn child was thankfully unharmed. Two months later, the healthy baby girl was delivered as her mother lay still in a coma, Central European News (CEN) reported.

Shortly before Christmas, Maria Kudrina, 31, was standing on a station platform waiting for a train in Moscow, Russia. Kudrina stumbled and fell because the large number of people waiting, and was struck in the head at least twice as the train cars passed by. Her husband, Vladimr Kudrina, 33, rushed to pull her back on the platform, but was unable to help.

The young mother’s survival seemed unlikely, but she was placed in intensive care, where she’s remained in a coma.

The newborn, named Maria after her mother, was delivered by caesarean section weighing 1 pound, 1.6 ounces and measuring 15 inches long. Doctors say she is doing well and remains in an incubator, but is expected to survive without problems. (Read more about the mother in coma for two months HERE)

Boy in Coma Starts Breathing After Doctors Insist He Was Brain Dead

By Kirsten Anderson. A 12-year-old Texas boy who slipped into a coma after suffering a severe asthma attack has begun breathing on his own – just hours after hospital officials fought to take him off life support because they believed he was legally “brain dead.” Now, his family has obtained a court order requiring the hospital to provide nourishment to the boy via a feeding tube, and hope to have him transferred to another facility within the week.

Joey Cronin has been at Driscoll Children’s Hospital in Corpus Christi since January 14, when he suffered cardiac arrest as a result of an asthma attack. In an interview last week with LifeSiteNews, Joey’s father George Cronin said that hospital staff were pessimistic about his chances of recovery from the very start, even though early on, Joey was showing signs of awareness – opening his eyes, gripping his parents’ hands, and responding to external stimuli.

“They were very negative,” Cronin told LifeSiteNews last week. “On the night he came in, they told me it could be a matter of hours before they would have to [remove Joey from life support].” However, the testing the hospital did to prove Joey was brain dead showed he was responsive, so they were forced to honor the Cronins’ wishes to keep the boy on his ventilator. But they refused to install a feeding tube so that he could receive nutrition.

When Joey slipped into a coma several days later, the hospital became more aggressive in its push to have the boy declared brain dead – the legal threshold for issuing a death certificate in Texas. With a death certificate, the hospital could remove Joey from life support against his parents’ wishes. Under advice from a local attorney, the Cronins refused to give consent for any further testing. They then sought help from Alliance Defending Freedom, a Christian legal defense group. Their only goal was to force the hospital to keep Joey alive until he could be transferred safely to another hospital – one that would give him lifesaving treatment without giving up on him.

At least one facility in Houston had already agreed to take Joey in, and another in New Jersey was open to the possibility. But the biggest question in the Cronins’ mind was whether Driscoll Children’s would give Joey the care he needed to stay strong enough for transfer. They reached out via news and social media, begging people to contact the hospital to urge them not to give up on Joey’s care. (Read more from this story HERE)

‘It’s Me or the Baby’: Man Chooses Son With Down Syndrome After Wife After She Abandons the Baby

Photo Credit: KTLABy Tracy Bloom. A New Zealand father whose wife abandoned their infant son because he was born with Down syndrome has decided to raise the child as a single dad, according to a report and a fundraising page.

Leo Forrest was born in Armenia on Jan. 21, 2015, much to the delight of his father, Samuel Forrest. He stated that regardless of the genetic condition, he considered his son to be “perfect.”

“They took me in (to) see him and I looked at this guy and I said, ‘he’s beautiful — he’s perfect and I’m absolutely keeping him,’” he said upon seeing his child for the first time, according to Boston television station WCVB.

His wife, however, had “refused to even look at or touch the newborn,” a GoFundMe fundraising page set up to support Forrest and his baby stated. The Armenian woman was afraid “of getting attached in a society where defects are not accepted, often bringing shame on the family involved,” according to the page.

A short time after Leo’s birth, the mother and her family abandoned the baby. What’s more, they told him he would be no longer welcome in their home if he decided to keep the baby. (Read more about the man choosing his son with Down Syndrome HERE)

Head of Tampa Down Syndrome Charity Embezzled $100,000 For Personal Use

By Mike Brassfield. Every October for 10 years, the Down Syndrome Network of Tampa Bay held a “Buddy Walk,” a fundraiser in a local park featuring a mile-long walk, games, clowns, giveaways, food and raffles. It raised tens of thousands of dollars — purportedly to fund programs for children with Down syndrome.

But last October, the Buddy Walk was canceled.

“We have had a problem with our nonprofit status,” the charity’s website announced. “This event is near and dear to our hearts, but is not possible this year.”

The unspoken reason: The charity’s founder and president was being investigated by police and was facing hard questions from some of the group’s members.

On Friday, she was arrested on charges that she embezzled more than $100,000 in charitable donations for her own use. Shirley Lawyer, 53, of Largo was charged with grand theft and was booked into the Pinellas County Jail. (Read more from this story HERE)
