Alarming Poll: Here’s How Many Americans Think We’re on the Verge of Civil War

Partisan political division and the resulting incivility has reached a low in America, with 67% believing that the nation is nearing civil war, according to a new national survey.

“The majority of Americans believe that we are two-thirds of the way to being on the edge of civil war. That to me is a very pessimistic place,” said Mo Elleithee, the executive director of Georgetown University’s Institute of Politics and Public Service.

And worse, he said in announcing the results of the institute’s Battleground Poll, the political division is likely to make the upcoming 2020 presidential race the nastiest in modern history.

Highlighting findings that show voters angered with compromise and growing unfavorable ratings of President Trump and most 2020 Democratic presidential candidates, he said the poll “paints a scenario, a picture of a highly negative campaign that will continue to exacerbate the incivility in our public discourse.”

He added, “It will be a sort of race to the bottom, or has the potential to be a race to the bottom.”

The Civility Poll is an offshoot of the famous bipartisan Battleground Poll conducted by Democratic pollster Celinda Lake of Lake Research Partners and Ed Goeas of the Tarrance Group. (Read more from “Alarming Poll: Here’s How Many Americans Think We’re on the Verge of Civil War” HERE)

Review Into Origins of the Russia Investigation Is Now a Criminal Inquiry

The U.S. Justice Department has opened a criminal inquiry into the origins of the Russia investigation, according to The New York Times. The Justice Department has been conducting an administrative review into the origins of the Russian investigation, but that review has now shifted into a criminal inquiry.

Now that a criminal investigation has been opened, prosecutor Durham has expanded powers to subpoena witnesses and impanel a grand jury, as noted by The Times.

WATCH: Republicans Force Their Way Into Secret Impeachment Proceedings, Causing Adam Schiff and Witness to Walk Out; Top Republicans Demand Democrats Call Whistleblower to Testify Publicly

By The Blaze. Decrying a lack of transparency in the House Democrats’ impeachment process against President Donald Trump, House Republicans gathered in the basement of the Capitol Wednesday morning to demand entry into proceedings they’ve been barred from thus far. And they reportedly got in.

At a news conference outside the SCIF, dozens of Republican representatives announced that they would seek to gain entry to the secure room — in which the Democrats of the three committees behind the current impeachment push were conducting a deposition — by demanding to be let in as a group.

SCIF stands for Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility. It’s a secure room where classified intelligence and other secret information is discussed. Congress’ SCIF is where much of the House Democrats’ investigation has so far taken place and where Republicans not on the investigating committees have not been allowed to enter. . .

According to a senior GOP source who witnessed what happened next, the group went into the anteroom of the SCIF and chanted, “Let us in” outside the door guarded by Capitol Police. After that, the source said, the door opened, someone grabbed it, and a group of Republican members forced their way in.

After members attempted to sit in on the closed-door testimony that was occurring, “Chairman Schiff immediately left with the witness,” Rep. Michael Waltz (R-Fla.) told reporters while flanked by a handful of other House Republicans. Top Republicans Demand Democrats Call Whistleblower to Testify Publicly

By CBS News. The top Republicans on the House committees pursuing the impeachment inquiry are demanding the public testimony of the whistleblower who reported concerns about President Trump’s dealings with Ukraine, as well as other officials referenced in the individual’s complaint, according to a letter obtained by CBS News.

The request is the first time Republican lawmakers involved in the impeachment probe have formally asked Democrats to call witnesses, a possible indication they intend to pursue more traditional channels to counter the investigation even as members seek to disrupt the proceedings themselves. REPORT: Dick’s Sporting Goods CEO Testing 2020 Run

Ed Stack, the CEO of Dick’s Sporting Goods and a longtime Republican donor, is testing the waters for a possible third-party presidential bid that could scramble the dynamics of the 2020 general election.

Various messages were presented to a focus group in southern Wisconsin this week centering on the billionaire businessman, along with possible three-way match-ups against Donald Trump and Joe Biden or Elizabeth Warren.

The focus group, according to a source who took part in the testing, ran through varying themes involving Stack and heavily focused on his example of “showing leadership” by halting the sale of assault-style rifles at all of Dick’s Sporting Goods stores in the wake of the high school massacre in Parkland, Fla. . .

The message testing told a different story. Those in the group were shown several short videos of other candidates including Biden, Warren and former Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz — a fellow billionaire who explored a presidential bid as an independent before announcing in September that he would not run — but viewed eight or nine videos that included Stack messaging, according to a focus group participant. House Republicans Release a Health Care Plan That Aims to Finally End Our Insurance Nightmare

Earlier this year, President Donald Trump vowed that “the Republican party will soon be known as the party of health care.” Republican lawmakers have now put forward a lengthy plan in an effort to realize that prediction.

On Tuesday, the Republican Study Committee released “A Framework for Personalized Healthcare,” an Obamacare replacement plan with the goal of driving down costs and improving access to care in a way that prioritizes individual choice over top-down government regulation.

“If government-run health care were the answer, the Veteran’s Health Administration (VHA) would serve as the gold standard,” the summary says. “Of course, it does not. … Does anyone really believe Washington bureaucrats could be trusted to manage the individual care of hundreds of millions of Americans?”

So what would the overall plan do? In order to understand that, it’s probably best to start with a brief refresher on the overall structure of Obamacare.

The four key parts of Obamacare — as explained previous CR article — are:

Regulations: These mandate that companies expand coverage to more people and benefits, therefore sending the cost of insurance skyrocketing.

Subsidies: Because the insurance is now unaffordable as a result of regulation, anyone below a certain income level is subsidized to purchase medical insurance.

Medicaid expansion: In addition to subsidizing non-Medicaid patients to purchase unaffordable medical insurance (thanks to the regs), Obamacare dramatically expanded both the eligibility and the federal subsidy rate to the states for Medicaid in order to cover more people.

Tax increases: Tax hikes were meant to fund the venture, and the individual mandate penalty was meant to keep young and healthy people from gaming the system by only paying for insurance if and when they needed it.

So what does the new RSC plan do differently?

First it seeks to remove the regulations that made health insurance so expensive in the first place, while allowing states to implement them within their own borders. However, regulations that force companies to issue insurance and not exclude high-cost-and-risk factors from coverage “would be retailored” under the plan.

Instead of Obama’s regulatory-subsidy combination, the RSC plan would seek to address costs for more expensive patients through state-run “guaranteed coverage pools,” under which “health care costs would be subsidized with federal grants and further contained by any state-enacted premium-setting restrictions.”

Insurance portability is “the cornerstone” of the proposed framework’s goal of “neutralizing the issue of pre-existing conditions,” according to the document. In this case, portability means people’s ability to take their insurance with them if they change jobs or states.

“Enhancing portability is critical for purposes of preventing breaks in coverage, during which time an individual could develop a medical condition posing an impediment to obtaining health insurance,” the plan reads. “In this way, continuous coverage can be a de facto safeguard against pre-existing conditions, so long as the operative legal backdrop ensures that coverage protections are portable.”

The framework would also seek to create equity in the taxation difference between paying for private plans and those offered by employers.

“A person choosing to purchase health insurance with income from their paycheck is at a significant tax disadvantage versus a person receiving employer-sponsored insurance. When an employer spends money to purchase a plan for an
employee, the employer does not have to pay payroll taxes on the benefit nor does the employee pay payroll or other federal and state income taxes on the benefit. On the other hand, if an employee seeks to purchase individual coverage, the funds they would use to do so are subject to each of those forms of taxation.”

One way to address this disparity, the RSC says, is by allowing people to pay for private insurance premiums out of tax-free Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) as opposed to their taxed income.

The plan would also expand HSAs, so that they could be also used for other services and products that currently have to be purchased with after-tax income; these include market-disrupting health care approaches like direct primary care, telemedicine, and health-sharing ministries.

Chip Roy, a freshman House conservative and cancer survivor who has been working for months to forge a new conservative narrative on health care policy — hailed the release of the plan at a Tuesday press conference.

Roy said that, in addition to addressing costs, access, and portability concerns, the framework would also “end the pre-existing [condition] problem before it starts; you shouldn’t be trying to solve this on the back end.”

“We should make it to where people have care because they’re able to pay for it and go into the market and and buy it just like you do any other service — food, shelter, clothing,” Roy added. “Nowhere else do we regulate it to death so you can’t get access to it.” (For more from the author of “House Republicans Release a Health Care Plan That Aims to Finally End Our Insurance Nightmare” please click HERE)

ICE Drops a Half-Million-Dollar Charge on Illegal Alien Who’s Refusing to Leave the U.S.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is no longer charging illegal aliens hundreds of thousands of dollars for refusing to leave the United States, according to a letter sent to immigrant families.

ICE — the agency tasked with carrying out immigration enforcement, including the deportation of illegal aliens — began mailing high-dollar fines in June to numerous foreign nationals who repeatedly ignored orders to leave the country, according to letters made public. One of the fines neared half a million dollars. However, in recent letters to these same illegal aliens, the agency said those fines have been retracted.

An immigration judge told Edith Espinal Moreno, for example, to leave the country over two years ago. Instead of following the court’s ruling, Espinal has chosen to remain in a local church in Ohio with her children. The Mexican national received a letter from ICE in June, informing her that she owes the government a total of $497,777. . .

“Following consideration of matters you forwarded for ICE review, and in the exercise of the its discretion under applicable regulations, ICE hereby withdraws the Notice of Intention to Fine,” ICE officer Lisa Hoechst wrote to Espinal in the letter, according to NPR.

Numerous other letters were doled out to illegal aliens who had been previously slapped with fines. Grassroots Leadership, a left-wing organization, published an Oct. 17 letter given to Hilda Ramirez-Mendez, notifying her that she no longer owed the agency money. New Poll: Who Will Win the Democratic Primary?

Former Vice President Joe Biden’s once-solid double-digit lead over the rest of the field of 2020 Democratic Party presidential nominees shrunk, in recent weeks, before slightly expanding again over the past two weeks. Biden currently stands 6.6% above second-place Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) in the average of recent national polling. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg, and Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) round out the top five in most recent national polling. Increasingly, the field appears to be shaping up as a three-horse race among Biden, Warren, and Sanders. But Sanders is poised to be the odd man out of the troika, due to a combination of health problems and the fact his socialist political platform is no longer unique.

Biden’s once-formidable lead has dramatically narrowed since its high watermark in May, as the senior statesman frequently commits gaffes on the campaign trail and oftentimes comes across as simply being too old to assume the mantle of commander-in-chief. It remains to be seen just how much of Biden’s continued fall can also be attributed to fallout from the recent Ukraine phone call national scandal and impeachment imbroglio. Warren has been surging for awhile now, although her national polling has taken a bit of a drop over the past couple of weeks. Warren and Sanders seem to be competing for a very similar voting demographic, and it is interesting to ponder the possibility of how one candidate would likely be substantially elevated were the other to drop out and endorse the other. Some polling data suggests that Sanders hypothetically dropping out would help Warren more than it would help Biden. But Sanders may be in this for the long haul, after all.

Electoral prediction market website PredictIt also pegs Warren as the favorite to win the presidential nomination over Biden — with Sanders, Buttigieg, and political novice Andrew Yang following next. But while PredictIt showed Warren with an overwhelming lead recently, her lead has over Biden has narrowed, of late. It is likely that many of these bettors are skittish about Biden’s age and perceived substantive centrism — with the latter especially worrisome among a Democratic Party base that is increasingly brazen and unabashed in its promotion of ardent, full-spectrum leftism.

The RealClearPolitics polling average for 10/11/19 – 10/22/19 shows Biden with an average national polling lead of 6.6%. (Read more from “New Poll: Who Will Win the Democratic Primary?” HERE)

Gun Owners Beware: Facebook Using Photos to Keep Track of Your Weapons

It’s no secret that technology plays an important role in our lives. Almost every single aspect of our life is ruled by technology, from smart phones to computers and the internet. That’s why it’s not surprising to know that Google and Facebook are keeping tabs on gun owners’ firearms.

According to The Firearms Blog (TFB), the two tech giants are scanning users’ pictures to look for serial numbers. They’re then creating an index of every person’s firearms based on the image scans. If you’ve posted a picture of your firearm on a social networking site and didn’t smear out the serial number, chances are it’s indexed on Google images. Simply type in the serial number in quotes and search images. What comes up?

The guys at TFB went through their image library and found images of various firearms and silencers where the serial number is clearly visible. They then typed it into Google and viola! Every image from their website showed up in the image results.

Although it’s unlikely for a random person to have your the serial number on your firearms, it is absolutely dangerous for social media giants to have this information. Facebook and Instagram are both owned by the same company. Same with YouTube and Google. When these platforms data mine this information, this creates an extremely dangerous situation. House Ethics Committee Launches Investigation Into Congresswoman’s Sex Scandal

The House Ethics Committee on Wednesday announced their intent to investigate freshman Congresswoman Katie Hill (D-CA) for having an extra-martial affair with a congressional staffer. The announcement was made after intimate photos of Hill were posted online without her consent.

The Committee is aware of public allegations that Representative Katie Hill may have engaged in a sexual relationship with an individual on her congressional staff, in violation of House Rule XXIII, clause 18(a). The Committee, pursuant to Committee Rule 18(a), has begun an investigation and will gather additional information regarding the allegations.

The Committee notes that the mere fact that it is investigating these allegations, and publicly disclosing its review, does not itself indicate that any violation has occurred, or reflect any judgment on behalf of the Committee. No other public comment will be made on this matter except in accordance with Committee rules.

Two weeks ago, our friends at RedState broke news that Hill was allegedly having an affair with her Legislative Director, Graham Kelly, and a throuple relationship with a female campaign staffer, whose name has yet to be released.

Hill has repeatedly said she’s going through a divorce from her abusive husband but text messages show Hill, her husband, Kenny Heslep, and the female staffer has an ongoing relationship. The husband admits in text messages to the campaign staffer that he and Hill abused her. (Read more from “House Ethics Committee Launches Investigation Into Katie Hill’s Sex Scandal” HERE)

Ironic Twist: Democrats’ Impeachment Probe Interfering in Ongoing Presidential Race

By Breitbart. The House Democrats’ impeachment inquiry into whether President Donald Trump attempted to influence the looming 2020 elections may interfere with the outcome of the presidential race in an ironic twist.

In other words, the Democrats are doing what they accuse Trump of trying to do: interfering in the ongoing presidential race. House Democrats launched the impeachment inquiry on September 24, months before the American public goes to the polls to elect the next president in November 2020.

Until the American public votes in November 2020, it will remain unclear whether the Democrats’ impeachment effort will hurt or benefit Trump. The impeachment probe, however, is already having an impact on the ongoing 2020 presidential election, potentially changing the minds of some voters.

Mainstream media outlets have acknowledged that impeachment could have collateral effects linked to the 2020 elections.

“Impeachment could drastically affect the 2020 election,” MSNBC conceded on September 25, a day after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) announced the impeachment probe. (Read more from “Ironic Twist: Democrats’ Impeachment Probe Interfering in Ongoing Presidential Race” HERE)

How the Impeachment Inquiry Could Affect the 2020 U.S. Election

By Quartz. . .Because 2020 is an election year, both sides will manage proceedings with an eye to the November poll. It is possible the house will vote before the end of the year: the decision to impeach Bill Clinton for lying under oath was made in the last three months of 1998.

Clinton was cleared by the Senate by the following February, so it is also possible the Senate will hold its own proceedings before most of the presidential primaries commence. It takes two-thirds of the Senate to remove a president from office, which has never happened.

While several Republican house representatives have expressed concern about the president’s behavior, the overwhelming majority of Republican politicians are either supporting him or remaining silent. . .

At the moment, Elizabeth Warren challenges Biden’s lead in the polls, with Bernie Sanders the only other candidate consistently supported by more than 10% of Democrats. None of the others in a crowded field—12 have qualified to take part in the next televised Democratic debate—have much support, and they will start to drop out once the primary season begins in February 2020.

If Biden continues to lose support, there is room for someone to emerge as the moderate front-runner, given that both Warren and Sanders represent the more radical instincts of the party. This is presumably why so many candidates are determined to continue campaigning, even when some of them rarely muster 2% in the polls.
