Expert Verdict on Republican Debate: Trump Is Missed, Desantis Fails to Shine — ‘The Star Wasn’t There’

With former President Donald Trump skipping Wednesday night’s Republican presidential debate, the eight candidates who took the stage had a chance to shine and make up a 40-point polling gap on the 77-year-old front-runner.

Unfortunately for them, experts consulted by The Post agreed, nobody did enough in Milwaukee to change the dynamics of the race.

“All of the candidates were looking for a breakout moment and didn’t get it,” said former Westchester County Executive and Republican gubernatorial candidate Rob Astorino.

“Donald Trump wasn’t there,” he added. “That’s like watching the Kansas City Chiefs without Patrick Mahomes. The star wasn’t there.”

The candidate who came into the night with the highest expectations was Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who is polling a solid — if distant — second behind Trump in most national surveys. First GOP Debate Sees Unlikely Winners as Trump Sits Down With Tucker

Eight candidates hit the stage for the first GOP presidential debate Wednesday night in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, opening up the chance to make an impact in a crowded field led by former President Donald Trump.

The debate, moderated by Fox News’ Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum, focused on the economy, climate change, abortion, COVID-19 lockdowns, gun control, Trump’s upcoming trials, Ukraine funding, China, the southern border, education, presidential age and UFO encounters. Trump — the leading candidate in primary polls — chose to skip out on the debate, and sat down for an interview with Daily Caller co-founder Tucker Carlson instead.

The candidates frequently sparred with entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, who painted himself as the young, anti-establishment choice.

Former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley and former Vice President Mike Pence were more prominent on the debate stage than expected, and the two traded blows with Ramaswamy on his Ukraine funding stance and age, respectively. Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie also battled for the spotlight, criticizing Trump for having conduct which he described as “beneath the office of President of the United States.”

On multiple occasions, the candidates talked over each other to attack or issue rebuttals, causing the moderators to plead for order. (Read more from “First GOP Debate Sees Unlikely Winners as Trump Sits Down With Tucker” HERE)

GOP Debate: Vivek Ramaswamy Refers to Zelensky as Pence, Christie’s ‘Pope’

By Breitbart. Presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy condemned his rivals at Wednesday’s Republican primary debate for visiting Ukraine in solidarity against the Russian invasion, accusing them of placing “their pope Zelensky” over American lives.

Ramaswamy’s remarks were directed at former Vice President Mike Pence and former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who both recently visited Kyiv and spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Christie offered Zelensky a sheet of paper with lyrics handwritten by New Jersey rock legend Jon Bon Jovi; Pence shared the day of his visit to Zelensky with climate change activist Greta Thunberg.

During the debate, hosted by Fox News and streamed on the video hosting site Rumble, moderators asked the candidates who among them would cut funding to Ukraine’s war effort, which currently surpasses $110 billion since Russian strongman Vladimir Putin launched a full-scale invasion of the country to oust Zelensky in February 2022. Ramaswamy, who has begun surpassing Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis in recent polling but still lags significantly behind former President Donald Trump, enthusiastically raised his hand.

“I think that this is disastrous that we are protecting against an invasion against somebody else’s border when we should use those same military resources to prevent across [sic] the invasion of our own southern border,” Ramaswamy explained. “We are driving Russia further into China’s hands. The Russia-China alliance is the single greatest threat we face.”

“And I find it offensive that we have professional politicians on this stage that will make a pilgrimage to Kyiv to their pope Zelensky without doing the same thing for people in Maui, or the south side of Chicago, or Kensington,” he continued. “I think we have to put the interests of Americans first, secure our own border before somebody else’s, and the reality is this is how we project strength, by making America strong at home.” (Read more from “GOP Debate: Vivek Ramaswamy Refers to Zelensky as Pence, Christie’s ‘Pope’” HERE)

Vivek Ramaswamy: Nikki Haley’s Ukraine Rhetoric Would Put Her on Board of Defense Contracting Companies

By Breitbart. Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy attacked fellow candidate Nikki Haley during Wednesday’s GOP presidential debate, saying her rhetoric will make her a friend of the military-industrial complex.

Haley delivered an articulate defense for the need to provide Ukraine with aid, saying the country is the “first line of defense” against Russian leader Vladimir Putin. She also said that NATO countries such as Poland could be at risk because of Russia’s incursion into Ukraine.

“I wish you well in your future career on the board of Lockheed & Raytheon,” Ramaswamy said.

Haley then exclaimed, “I’m not on the boards of Lockheed and Raytheon!”

Breitbart News’s John Binder reported that former United Nations Ambassador Haley raked in more than $256,000 as a member of Boeing’s Board of Directors during her tenure.

Drone Gets Remotely Grounded Upon Nearing Site of Maui Fire Origin, Pilot Quickly Visited by Government

A licensed drone operator who said he was filming the suspected origin of wildfires that killed at least 115 people in Hawaii told a Fox News host that his drone was grounded and he was visited by federal agents.

That is according to network host Will Cain, who relayed the strange story Monday evening.

In a thread on X, the platform formerly called Twitter, Cain shared the story of Davin Phelps, who said he was prohibited from filming the suspected area where fires started on Maui two weeks ago.

‘Chilling Threats’ Issued Against Whistleblowers Who Helped Tank Hunter’s Plea Deal

Attorneys for the IRS whistleblowers who exposed Hunter Biden’s sweetheart deal — brokered by now Special Counsel David Weiss — are crying foul as the legal team of President Joe Biden’s son attempts to have their clients prosecuted.

Jason Foster, who represents IRS whistleblower Gary Shapley, is highlighting reporting in the New York Times about the latest “chilling” move by Hunter’s team, who want congressionally protected whistleblowers prosecuted for speaking out and telling the truth.

“The I.R.S. agents and their Republican allies say they believe the evidence they brought forward, at the precise time they did, played a role in influencing the outcome,” the New York Times recently reported. “Mr. Biden’s legal team agrees that the I.R.S. agents affected the deal, his lawyers have contended to the Justice Department that by disclosing details about the investigation to Congress, they broke the law and should be prosecuted.”

School Reportedly Isolates Black Students at Assembly, Tries to Bribe With Gift Cards

A Flagler County, Florida, elementary school singled out numerous Black students and forced them to attend an assembly on improving their standardized test scores, as confirmed by the district’s interim superintendent.

FOX 35 in Orlando reported that last Friday, students in grades four and five were taken out of class to attend an assembly in the Bunnell Elementary School cafeteria, as learned by several parents.

The students who performed well on the standardized tests were reportedly brought to the front of the assembly and used as model examples as teachers discussed the test scores and offered gift cards to restaurants as rewards for improving their scores.

The news station received confirmation from Cheryl Massaro, the Flagler County Schools board chair, that Black students were “isolated” for the assembly. She told the station the assembly should have never happened, though it did.

Interim Superintendent Lashakia Moore issued a statement on the district’s website about the assembly, saying she sat down with Bunnell Elementary Principal Donelle Evensen after the assembly and discussed what led to the presentation and what steps were, or were not, taken before and after. Kevin McCarthy Threatens Impeachment Inquiry if DOJ Uses Special Counsel to Stonewall House Probe Into Bidens

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy threatened an impeachment inquiry if the Department of Justice used David Weiss’s status as special counsel to thwart a House Oversight Committee investigation.

Attorney General Merrick Garland announced the appointment of Weiss as special counsel Friday to investigate allegations surrounding Hunter Biden. Biden pled not guilty to all charges after the plea deal collapsed when United States District Judge Maryellen Noreika rejected both the initial plea deal and a more limited revision July 26.

“The only reason you know of all this information is because we took the majority and we’re holding the administration accountable,” McCarthy told Fox Business host Larry Kudlow. “It is appalling of what we have learned. It is different than what President Biden had told us. He told us he had never talked to his son about any business dealings, that he has never been involved in his family’s business, that they never received any money from China. We now learn while he was vice president the family created 20 shell companies, they did receive more than a million dollars from China and he did call in to the business meetings and he did go to dinners. These dinners were very profitable. They got a new Porsche, they got $3.5 million, but the really most compelling thing here is there is somebody lying.”

The House Oversight Committee released bank records Aug. 9 showing that Hunter Biden received millions of dollars from Russian oligarch Yelena Baturina, who was married to Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov until his death in 2019. The House Oversight Committee identified roughly $20 million in payments to the Biden family. Trump Classified Docs Witness Recanted False Testimony After Switching Lawyers: Prosecutors

The director of information technology at Mar-a-Lago recanted previous “false testimony” in special counsel Jack Smith’s case into former President Donald Trump’s alleged mishandling of classified documents after switching lawyers and learning of possible perjury charges, according to prosecutors.

The witness — described in a Justice Department court filing on Tuesday as “Trump Employee 4” and identified by several media outlets as Yuscil Taveras — has provided prosecutors with information regarding alleged efforts to delete surveillance camera footage taken at the 77-year-old former president’s Palm Beach, Fla., club and residence.

“When Trump Employee 4 testified before the grand jury in the District of Columbia in March 2023, he repeatedly denied or claimed not to recall any contacts or conversations about the security footage at Mar-a-Lago,” the DOJ’s court filing states.

The employee learned through a target letter issued 12 days after Trump’s indictment in the case that he faced “criminal exposure” to perjury charges, which the government says was “entirely due to his false sworn denial before the grand jury.”

Taveras also became aware that his lawyer, Stanley Woodward, might have a conflict of interest in the case because of his representation of Trump co-defendant Walt Nauta. (Read more from “Trump Classified Docs Witness Recanted False Testimony After Switching Lawyers: Prosecutors” HERE)

US Officials Urging Ukraine to Change Strategy as Window for Success in Counteroffensive Narrows

Ukraine has a limited window left to make strategic gains in its faltering counteroffensive as men and war materiel runs thin, and Biden administration officials are urging Kyiv to alter its strategy, The New York Times reported, citing U.S. and Western officials.

Too many of Ukraine’s forces and top-tier combat units are concentrated to the north and east, where Bakhmut lies, instead of in the south, where Ukraine hopes to sever Russian supply lines and demolish the “land bridge” between Russia and occupied Crimea, the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told the NYT. American military planners have advised Ukraine to reallocate forces toward Melitopol and Berdiyansk and be open to accepting more losses before weather conditions turn unfavorable in the fall.

Ukrainian commanders have divided troops and equipment in roughly equal amounts across both fronts, likely a legacy of Soviet military doctrine that called for even distribution of resources to minimize conflict between military factions, according to the NYT.

One U.S. official told the outlet Ukrainian troops are dispersed over too wide an area and need to hone in on a single strategic location.

Two officials briefed on a call between Ukraine’s senior military commander Gen. Valeriy Zaluzhnyi and senior U.S. and British military leaders said Zaluzhnyi agreed, according to the NYT.

Medical Examiner Makes Ruling in Death of Obama’s Personal Chef

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner of Massachusetts ruled this week that the drowning death of the Obama family’s personal chef was an accident.

Tafari Campbell, 45, worked as a sous chef for Barack and Michelle Obama and was visiting Martha’s Vineyard from Dumfries, Virginia, at the time of his passing, authorities said.

Timothy McGuirk, a spokesman for the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security, told The Washington Post that the chief medical examiner ruled Campbell’s death an accident on Tuesday. He added that the office does not release autopsy reports to the public.

Campbell allegedly was “standing on his paddleboard when he lost his balance and fell off” into the Edgartown Great Pond, the Boston Globe reported at the time of the incident in late July. “He struggled to remain afloat before slipping beneath the water. Campbell was not wearing a life jacket and wasn’t secured to his board. Campbell’s body was found in about 8 feet of water.” (Read more from “Medical Examiner Makes Ruling in Death of Obama’s Personal Chef” HERE)
