Miller Says Focus Must Be On Accurate Count and Beating Democrats

Anchorage, Alaska. August 28, 2010 — The Joe Miller Campaign for US Senate is calling on Republicans to unite. “The primary is over, and the people have spoken,” Miller said. “We are now in the process of trying to determine their will, and that the vote count is accurate and free of fraud. It is incumbent upon us all to step back and take a deep breath. We were opponents; we are not enemies. We should work together to ensure the integrity of the vote count and then focus on beating the Democrats with a message of limited federal government and states’ rights in November.”

Miller Apologizes for Volunteer’s Tweet

Anchorage, Alaska. August 27, 2010 — A tweet went out today from Joe Miller’s Twitter account, the intent of which was to encourage the Libertarians to stay true to their party’s values and not to allow Senator Murkowski to run under their banner. It linked to an article in the Daily Caller saying the two were in discussions.

Miller responded, “Throughout the campaign I have had volunteers who assist in many areas, including assisting me in communicating through Twitter. This tweet was in poor judgment and the volunteer has been relieved of those duties. And while the comments have been misconstrued (they were directed at the Libertarian Party), I don’t stand by those comments. The Libertarians are free to choose whomever they want to represent them. It’s up to them to decide who best represents their values. I am a Republican Party U.S. Senate candidate, and look forward to representing that party’s message of limited government and returning power to the states and the people who live in them. I certainly apologize to Senator Murkowski for any hurt feelings caused by this poorly conceived post.”

Miller Says NRSC Needs to Stay on Sidelines

Anchorage, Alaska. August 26, 2010 — Joe Miller, candidate for United States Senate, believes the National Republican Senatorial Committee’s proper place during the Republican Primary Election in Alaska is on the sidelines. The purpose of the organization is “electing Republicans to the U.S. Senate.” It is not to pick favorites amongst those running, nor is it to send lawyers to try to manipulate the outcome. Miller said, “You have to be concerned anytime somebody lawyers up and tries to pull an Al Franken, if you will. We are very aware that there may be some attempt here to skew the results. I hope that is not the case. Alaskans won’t stand for any post-election foul play; the accurate vote of the people must stand.”

Miller also pointed out that Lisa Murkowski has not publicly ruled out a third party run. “It is inappropriate for the NRSC to spend money on a candidate who may not even be the Republican nominee and in fact may change parties to run against the Party’s choice,” said Miller.

Miller Very Pleased with Election Results

Anchorage, Alaska. August 25, 2010 — Joe Miller, candidate for United States Senate from Alaska, said today, “I’m very pleased with last night’s election results and so grateful to the people of Alaska for their support, including the army of volunteers that made this all possible. We still have to await the absentee ballot count, but if trends hold, it’s on to the general election, where we intend to work just as hard to communicate our message to the people of Alaska. We must return to limited government if we are to restore our personal freedom and the promise of the American dream for future generations.”

With 100% of the precincts now reporting, Miller leads Murkowski by 1,668 votes, 50.90% to 49.10%. The Division of Elections reports over 16,000 absentee voter ballots were sent out, of which 9,000 have been returned. Several thousand may be pending. All ballots must have been postmarked by yesterday, August 24, 2010 to be included in the tally. Absentee ballots will be counted on August 31, and September 3 and 8.

On August 20, at the Kenai-Soldotna Chamber Forum, both Miller and Murkowski committed to respect the will of the people regarding the primary election results.

Dan Fagan Endorses Joe Miller

Anchorage, Alaska. August 23, 2010 — Radio talk show host Dan Fagan formally endorsed Joe Miller for United States Senate today. He said in part, “I have a message for my fellow conservatives. Lisa Murkowski is now so desperate that she’s playing a clip from my radio show for one of her ads without my permission. Let me make one thing clear, I believe Lisa Murkowski is a liberal. She co-sponsored cap and trade legislation that would devastate Alaska’s economy. She voted in favor of anti-gun rights Attorney General Eric Holder and she voted for Obama’s so-called 2nd Stimulus Plan, but the main reason I cannot support Liberal Lisa is she’s pro-abortion. In fact, she insists that you and I give some of our money to the government to pay for abortions. Joe Miller and I have disagreed on some issues during the campaign, but I know this, Joe Miller on each of these issues is a true conservative, and when the tough votes comes, we don’t have to wonder where Joe Miller stands.” (Listen to audio here.)

Miller thanked Fagan for his endorsement saying, “Dan took the time to get to know me and where I stand on the issues. When he realized we were on the same team in the fight to rein in an out-of-control government and restore personal freedom, he gave his unqualified support to our campaign. I thank him for his willingness to help get the word out to Alaskans about the issues in this race.”

Miller and Fagan differed on where Lisa Murkowski stood on the repeal of ObamaCare. After further weighing the evidence, Fagan apologized to Miller for saying the candidate was misrepresenting where Murkowski stood on government run healthcare and the repeal of ObamaCare. Miller asserted Murkowski was against the repeal of ObamaCare based on her statement to KTUU News on March 30, 2010: the day President Obama signed the final provisions of the Obamacare into law. Murkowski told KTUU’s Rhonda McBride, “Repealing this is not the answer in my opinion, because if you repeal it and do nothing, you will not have addressed healthcare reform.”

On air today Fagan stated that “I apologized to [Miller] in person, and I apologized to him on the air.” Fagan, referring to a clip from a healthcare town hall last summer, noted that Murkowski, “clearly states, no wiggle room, no guessing room, ‘I think it’s good to have the government take over the healthcare as long as they do it right.’ When I heard that in light of the [KTUU interview], I think what Joe was initially asserting was accurate. I believe I was wrong at that point. I got carried away. I was wrong.” The healthcare town hall meeting was held on August 20, 2009 and Murkowski’s precise words were, “It’s not so much that the government-run plan is in and of itself a bad thing . . . what we have to have is a government-run plan that actually works.” (See video starting at 0:29:50.)

Murkowski was late to the party regarding signing on the “Repeal ObamaCare Bill.” She waited until July 29th, 2010, during the heat of this campaign, to finally co-sponsor the bill. That was four months after the passage of ObamaCare, and three months after the last of the 21 other co-sponsors, including Senator John McCain, put their names to the bill.

Miller fundamentally disagrees with Murkowski on whether the government should be taking over 1/5 of our economy, even if it “works.” Miller said, “We need a Senator who will stand up and fight the Statists in power, not negotiate the terms of our surrender. It is time for a return to limited government. It is the only answer to our economic woes, and to a deeper financial crisis looming on the horizon, if we continue down this path. We can turn this thing around and get this nation back on the right track, but we’ve got to act now.”

Miller and Murkowski Differ Greatly on the Right to Life

Anchorage, Alaska. August 23, 2010 — The Alaska Family Council issued a voter guide for the Joe Miller and Lisa Murkowski. Joe is pro-life and Lisa is not. She was one of a handful of Republican Senators to vote to affirm “Roe v. Wade” as the law of the land. The sense of the Senate vote read in part, “(1) the decision of the Supreme Court in Roe v. Wade (410 U.S. 113 (1973) was appropriate and secures an important constitutional right; and (2) such decision should not be overturned (See S.Amdt. 260 to S. 3, March 12, 2003). She also voted to allow taxpayer funds to go to groups that provide abortions within the United States and overseas, and for taxpayer funded embryonic stem cell research (See S.Amdt. 3330 to S.Amdt. 3325 to H.R. 3043, October 18, 2007 S.Admt. 2708 to H.R. 2764, September 6, 2007 and Senate Bill 5, April 11, 2007). “The right to life is the most basic of all rights and specifically guaranteed in the 5th and 14th Amendments and in the Declaration of Independence. I do not understand why the Senator is unwilling to protect the most vulnerable among us,” said Miller.

The Alaska Right to Life has endorsed Joe Miller. The group’s president, Dr. Christie Eberhardt, said, “It is so encouraging to have such a solid pro-life candidate running for office. We are saddened and disappointed with Sen. Murkowski’s anti-life voting record; we call on all pro-life Alaskans to support Joe Miller.”

Former Lt. Gov. Loren Leman Endorses Joe Miller

Anchorage, Alaska. August 22, 2010 — Former Lieutenant Governor Loren Leman endorsed Joe Miller for the United States Senate today. In his endorsement Leman said, “[W]e need bold new leadership that will stand up to the radical agenda of Barack Obama, defend our freedoms, and promote a culture of life. The best person to do this is Joe Miller.” He added, “Joe is a man of integrity, with the backbone to stand up to the liberal agenda in Washington.”

Leman, throughout his career as a public servant, has fought to bring fiscal discipline to Alaska State government and has been a strong advocate for family values. “I am deeply appreciative of Loren’s endorsement, and with Alaskans going to the polls this week, it could not have come at a better time,” said Miller.

Letter from Joe to Republican Primary Voters

Dear Alaskan Voter:

In a few short days you will have an opportunity to cast your vote in the Alaska Republican Primary Election. But between now and then, there are a few misunderstandings that I would like to clear up. Senator Murkowski continues to protest that her record is being distorted, and that my Campaign is being financed by the California-based Tea Party Express. Both accusations are false.

I applaud Senator Murkowski for voting “no” on the initial Obamacare bill. What is at issue is the Senator’s response to the passage of Obamacare. On March 30, 2010 Senator Murkowski said, “Repealing this [Obamacare] is not the answer in my opinion.” The facts will bear out that the final reconciliation bill was signed into law on March 30, 2010 – the very day Senator Murkowski made her case against full repeal in the Senate Republican Conference, and proclaimed on public television that repeal was “not the answer.” It then took her almost four months to the day, and significant political pressure, to sign on to the Republican repeal bill on July 29, 2010.

Even KTUU reporter Rhonda McBride understood the Senator to say that Obamacare “should be viewed as a work in progress.” Such a view is consistent with Murkowski’s remarks at an Anchorage Healthcare Town Hall on August 20, 2009. She said, “It’s not so much that the government run plan is in and of itself a bad thing … what we have to have is a government-run plan that actually works.” I have a fundamental disagreement with the Senator on whether government should be taking over 1/5 of our economy, even if it “works.” We need a Senator who will stand up and fight the Statists in power, not negotiate the terms of our surrender. It is time for a return to Constitutional government. It is the only answer to our economic woes, and to a deeper financial crisis looming on the horizon, if we continue down this path.

“In this present crisis, government is not the solution to our problem; government is the problem” – Ronald Reagan

As for Campaign finance, the Tea Party Express is an independent organization that works in the interests of limited government and individual liberty. I have no control over what they do, or the money they invest in their campaign. I have received no money from the Tea Party Express, while Senator Murkowski has received 88% of her 2009-10 contributions from outside the state. Her accusations against me seem a little bit like the pot calling the kettle black.

With the election just days away, I want to take this opportunity to talk directly with you about the future of the country we love. These are serious times that demand serious leadership. In the race for United States Senate, your choice is clear: you can either vote for the ‘business as usual’ incumbent, or you can opt for bold new leadership in Washington. I am committed to getting this nation back on the right path.

These are momentous times, and the ongoing saga of this election is more than just a family feud. It is a time for choosing between the policies that have cast a pall of darkness over our economic future, and solutions that are time-tested and sure to bring maximum benefit and opportunity to every American. We shouldn’t have to spend our sunset years remembering the good old days when men were free and life was good. Our children deserve an opportunity to face the future with the same hope and anticipation that we once did.

Though she is flooding the airwaves saying otherwise, Senator Murkowski has consistently been on the wrong side of the issues that matter most to Alaskans. She has been part of the big spending, big government brigade in Washington. From her vote in favor of Big Bank and Wall Street bailouts to Co-Sponsoring Cap and Trade legislation in the 110th Congress, to the expansion of the Entitlement State and her wobbly stance on Obamacare, Murkowski has earned a reputation in Washington as one of the go-to Senators for a Republican swing-vote on liberal issues.

“One of the reasons why I’m in favor of less government, is because when you have more government, industrialists take it over.” – Milton Friedman

If you honor me with your vote, I pledge to stand up to the President’s radical agenda and work to rein in government spending, repeal Obamacare, reform the tax code, and promote a culture of life. I am under no illusions about the challenges our country is facing. But it is my firm belief that with courage, hard work and a little good fortune we can begin a new era of American prosperity.

Let’s stand up to the failed policies of the past. Give me your vote, and your voice will be heard in Washington. Join with me to take our country back!

Yours for the Future,

Joe Miller

Candidate for United States Senate
