Robert Campbell Named As Campaign Manager

Anchorage, Alaska. August 13, 2010 — Robert Campbell has taken over for Paul Bauer as the campaign manager for Joe Miller for U.S. Senate today. “I am honored by Joe’s trust in me and excited to be involved in electing him to be the next United States Senator from Alaska,” said Campbell. Campbell has his own law practice in Barrow and is a former prosecutor and police officer. “Robert has assisted and counseled me at key moments during our campaign, and I know his help will be invaluable in taking us on to victory,” Miller said. He added, “Paul is stepping down to attend to some personal matters, but will continue in an advisory capacity. His efforts have been crucial to bring us to this point, and I want to thank him and his family for all the hard work they have done.”

Editorial by Joe: There’s No Free Lunch

Nobel prize-winning economist Milton Friedman pointed out in the midst of the stagflation of the 1970s and early 80s: “There’s no such thing as a free lunch.” The nation was experiencing little economic growth, double-digit inflation and interest rates, and an unemployment rate almost identical to today’s. We ended up in this ditch following a government knows best approach, sending more and more money to Washington so politicians could divvy it out as they saw fit. Their belief was that the individual industry and creativity of the American people could not be relied upon in an ever-changing and complex world. Government control and intervention were required in their view.

Ronald Reagan led the way out of the doldrums of the 70s into the booming 80s by going in exactly the opposite direction: rein in federal spending and leave more money in the hands of the people who earned it. Let them take the nation out of recession. That is exactly what the American people did. The United States experienced over two decades of nearly uninterrupted growth with unemployment falling and staying near or below 5% for most of those years.

The lesson of the 80s and 90s is clear: less government is better. When the government takes from one person’s hard work to give to another who has not worked for it, there is an overall negative effect on the economy. Less money is left in the hands of individuals and businesses to invest, grow, and create jobs. Conversely, when the government starts wealth redistribution programs whose benefits people do not have to pay for or pay full value for, it invariably leads to more people flocking to them and becoming more dependent on government. The government then has to turn around and raise taxes again leading to fewer jobs and more people dependent on government. The downward spiral continues. Where does this all lead? Margaret Thatcher said it best, “The problem with socialism [big government] is that “eventually you run out of other people’s money.”

Unfortunately, by the early 2000s, there were too many people in power from both political parties who had forgotten this lesson. The Republicans (most of them should be called progressives or Democrat light) ushered in the largest expansion of federal spending since the heyday of Lyndon Johnson’s Great Society in the 1960s. The federal budget increased by $1 trillion from 2001 to 2006. Much of the increase was not military related, but was caused by a 36% increase in domestic spending levels, including the creation of new government entitlement programs. Following her appointment to office in 2002, Senator Lisa Murkowski was right in the midst of the big spenders voting for these increases.

When the Democrats took over, they proceeded to double down on the big spending mistakes of the progressive Republicans. Government immediately expanded, domestic spending increased by hundreds of billions, and yet another new entitlement program was created, ObamaCare, which will cost trillions. The federal budget deficit was $1.4 trillion in 2009 and is on track to be $1.5 trillion this year. The Obama Administration’s projections call for a doubling of the national debt to over $20 trillion by the end of the decade. If Congressional Budget Office projections are correct, over one quarter of the federal budget will be needed to pay interest on the national debt (the largest single item in the budget). This path is unsustainable and subjects us to the whims of foreign debt holders such as China and various Mideast nations. It is the road to serfdom.

Senator Murkowski is a statist. She believes that government is the answer to nearly every problem. She is an Arlen Specter-like Republican and, in fact, was right next to him in the top five RINOs in the Senate (Human Events, “Top Ten Senate RINOs”). She’s on President Obama’s short list of Republicans to call when he needs a swing vote. Just last month, she met with President Obama’s Congressional Democrats looking for ways to move climate change legislation forward.

Additionally, Murkowski:

1. Waffled on repealing ObamaCare

2. Supports cap and trade

3. Voted for TARP

4. Voted for bailouts of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac

5. Voted against measures to secure our borders and for amnesty

6. Voted with the Democrats to rescind Reagan’s Mexico City Policy

7. Voted for taxpayer funded abortions and embryonic stem cell research

8. Voted with the Democrats against the Republicans over 300 times, according to the Washington Post

9. The Huffington Post described her as, “a center-right Democrat”

10. Voted for 7 out of 8 of President Obama’s and the Congressional Democrats major appropriations bills that Republicans voted against.

We can no longer afford to go down this road that big spenders, like Senator Murkowski, have us on. It is unsustainable. To borrow a phrase from Reagan, we must cause this “sad, bizarre chapter” in American political history to come to an end. We either have to return to our Constitutional moorings, grounded in limited government and individual liberty, or face the likely prospect of national insolvency, akin to Greece, with no one big enough to bail us out. “There’s no such thing as a free lunch.”

Let it be said of this time and place, that people of good sense, alarmed by a common danger to our nation’s future, came together in time to save it.

Miller Rejects Obama’s Lawless Immigration Policy; Offers Plan

Anchorage, Alaska. August 4, 2010 — Republican US Senate candidate Joe Miller says the Obama Administration is trying to rule by executive fiat regarding the country’s immigration policy. Miller unveiled his plan for tackling the growing problem of illegal immigration and faulted Senator Murkowski for being on the wrong side of this vital issue.

Late last week, the National Review broke a story indicating the Obama Administration has been working on a way to enact back door amnesty if Congress does not pass a new immigration bill to its liking (see National Review, “The Amnesty Memo,” July 29, 2010). The Obama Administration has also sued the state of Arizona and received a preliminary injunction against enforcement of the state’s new law, which tries to address the growing problems caused by drug trafficking and other illegal border crossings.

Miller, a former U.S. Magistrate Judge, challenged the Obama Administration’s rule by executive order as totally contrary to the Founders’ intent. “It is a simple question. Are we a nation of laws? I believe we are. Therefore, the President must enforce our immigration laws as written and secure our borders, not sue the state of Arizona for acting where the federal government has failed to do so,” said Miller.

Miller offered his plan for dealing with the growing challenging problem of illegal immigration:

  • 1. Build a permanent border and deploy the necessary military and border security personnel to secure it.
  • 2. No Amnesty for the people who broke our laws to come the U.S. Unlawful behavior cannot be rewarded.
  • 3. End the “Catch and Release” policy by making expedited removal of illegal aliens mandatory and require the completion of the US-VISIT entry-exit system, which uses biometric information to confirm the identity of foreign travelers entering and leaving the United States.
  • 4. Require employer verification of worker eligibility to work in the United States and stiffer punitive penalties for knowingly hiring illegal workers.
  • 5. Enact legislation declaring English as the official language.
  • 6. Limit birthright citizenship to the children of United States citizens and legal permanent residents.
  • 7. Deny certain federal funds to states that allow illegal immigrants to get driver’s licenses.
  • 8. Deny federal education grants to public universities that violate the law by offering in-state tuition breaks for illegal immigrants.
  • 9. End all loopholes in federal law[s] that benefit illegal aliens, and those who profit from their illegal presence in the United States.

“We must eliminate the incentives that encourage immigrants to cross our borders illegally and work in a black market economy especially when our nation faces widespread unemployment,” Miller said.

Incumbent Senator Lisa Murkowski has a different view. Unlike Miller, she voted for amnesty (S.2611, Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act, May 25, 2006). She also voted for continued federal funding for sanctuary cities, against funding a fence along the border, and against requiring our border to be secure before amnesty is granted (See S.Amdt. 1399 to S.Amdt. 1373 to H.R. 2892, July 8, 2009 andS.Amdt. 1311 to S.Amdt. 1150 to S. 1348, June 7, 2007). Miller said, “The incumbent wants to reward people who have broken the law to get into our country. Her position only encourages more people to break the law and threatens our national sovereignty and security.”

Miller Challenges Murkowski to Primary Debate

Anchorage, Alaska — US Senate Candidate Joe Miller is inviting Senator Lisa Murkowski to a televised debate on August 17, 6:30pm, at the Wilda Marston Theatre, located in the Loussac Library in Anchorage.

The debate will be televised by local area networks and facilitated by three prominent local personalities to be chosen with input from each campaign. The debate format will include: 1) questions from the moderators to each of the candidates, with an opportunity for rebuttal; 2) questions provided by the audience to each candidate, followed again by rebuttals; and 3) a segment in which the candidates may ask questions of each other. The main purpose of the debate will be to allow the media, the public, and the candidates themselves to ask the hard questions with an opportunity for each candidate to “set the record straight.” The format will allow the fullest airing of the candidates’ views so Alaskan voters can make an informed decision.

Two of the three current candidate forums Senator Murkowski has said she will participate in are not really debates, but panel discussions. There will be candidates from all parties answering questions from the audience, which can be answered with 1-minute responses without opportunity for rebuttal. The third meeting of the candidates is a televised debate conducted by Public Television in their studio, which is not open to the public. Additionally, the debate’s format has very limited opportunity for rebuttal or interchange between the candidates. “Alaskan voters deserve to know where the person who will serve them for the next six years stands. This is the one opportunity they will have for a job interview, and they should have more than 30-second or 1-minute sound bites. They deserve a real debate,” said Miller.

Senator Murkowski was conspicuously absent from two earlier well-advertised forums. Less than a half hour before the Palmer-Wasilla Chambers of Commerce Candidates Forum, Murkowski’s campaign cancelled. The second debate sponsored by the Anchorage Second Amendment Task Force, also found Murkowski absent. “If the Senator is proud of her record in Washington, she should be more than willing to defend it and allow the Alaskan public to know where she stands. They deserve to know,” said Miller.

The Joe Miller Campaign requests the Senator respond by 6:30pm, August 5th 2010.

Correction: Miller Challenges Murkowski’s “good faith” on ObamaCare

The Joe Miller Campaign wishes to correct statements relating to its earlier press release issued today asserting that Senator Murkowski had not signed on to S. 3152, the Republican ObamaCare repeal bill. After months of being challenged on her position on ObamaCare, and Election Day drawing closer, our campaign has been informed that Senator Murkowski decided to sign on yesterday, July 29, 2010. There has been no public announcement of which our campaign is aware concerning the Senator’s change of heart. It should be noted the bill was introduced on March 23, 2010 with several of her Republican colleagues as co-sponsors. The other co-sponsors signed on within a month of the bill’s introduction. Only Murkowski waited until late into the summer. The Senator stated in a KTUU interview on March 30th, that repealing the bill was not the answer in her opinion. The Miller Campaign’s press release pointed to an article from The Hill on July 5th stating that Murkowski still had not signed on to the bill, and that her office did not respond to requests for comment on the story.

In spite of the fact that the Senator became a repeal convert, at least in words, around the time Joe Miller entered the race on April 19th, her reticence to co-sponsor S. 3152 before public pressure was brought to bear on her still raises questions about her commitment to repeal.

Miller Challenges Murkowski’s “Good Faith” on ObamaCare

US Senate Candidate Joe Miller is calling on Senator Lisa Murkowski to explain why she continues to grandstand on the repeal of ObamaCare, while offering us no concrete evidence that she will stand up and be counted in the United States Senate. Early this month, The Hill reported that she has declined to sign a simple nine-word Republican bill that would repeal ObamaCare and allow free market advocates to go back and get it right. Senators Jon Kyl of Arizona and John Cornyn of Texas, among other prominent Republican legislators have signed on, while Mitch McConnell, Lamar Alexander and Lisa Murkowski have begged off. (See Senate Bill to Repeal Healthcare Reform Lacks Backing from Republican Leaders, The Hill, July 5, 2010.)

“The Senator has some explaining to do,” Miller said. “Alaskan voters deserve something more than a ‘duck and weave’ routine on her nuanced, and sometimes contradictory positions on the repeal of ObamaCare. If she cannot make up her mind on something this straightforward and unpopular, how can Republican voters have any reasonable expectation that she will ‘fight for Alaska’ if they give her the nod in August.” Last August speaking at a townhall meeting in Anchorage, she said “It’s not so much that the government run [healthcare] plan is in and of itself a bad thing.” She backed up that view with a vote earlier in 2009. Murkowski was one of only a handful of Republican Senators who voted against their Party with the Democrats for a $33 billion expansion of the SCHIP program, shortly after President Obama took office (The Senate Vote on H.R. 2 as Amended, January 29, 2009). President George W. Bush vetoed a similar measure twice on the grounds that it was a move towards socialized medicine which the nation could ill-afford.

Though she now says she favors repealing ObamaCare, as has been widely reported, she said precisely the opposite in a March 30 interview with KTUU shortly after the bill passed. At the time, it looked like public sympathy was swinging in support of the new legislation. But after Mr. Miller decided to jump into the race in April, she altered her message. Do her recent protests really indicate a change in course? The new information from The Hill raises serious questions about her willingness to stand on the true conservative principle of limited government, and the disparity between what the Senator says in Alaska and what she does in Washington. It seems we’re hearing more of the reelection Lisa now, while the real Murkowski sees new federal government programs as the answer to almost every problem.

Miller Questions Murkowski’s Vote Against Her Party to Fund the Rangel Center

CNN is reporting that Democratic Congressman Charlie Rangel is being charged with ethics violations relating to illegal activity and solicitation of funds for the Charles B. Rangel Center for Public Policy at the City College of NY.

US Senate Candidate Joe Miller is calling on Senator Lisa Murkowski to explain why she stood with the Democrats and against the majority of her Republican Senate colleagues in their efforts to block millions in taxpayer funds from being used to build the Charles B. Rangel Center in October of 2007. There is clearly a conflict of interest when a sitting Congressman requests an earmark to build a monument to himself. “I think ordinary Alaskans have to wonder how their Senator cannot see an issue here,” said Miller. “Not only is the Senator’s vote to enable such behavior inappropriate, it raises serious questions about how seriously she considers the trust the taxpayers’ gave her in spending their hard-earned money.”

In an article in the Washington Post today, Senator Murkowski is quoted as saying, “Everything that I do is what is best for the people that I represent.” Beyond the presumption and arrogance of such a paternalistic statement, it begs the question of exactly how millions of dollars taken from hard-working Americans’ pockets to fund a self-aggrandizing project for one of Congress’s most corrupt members is best for the people of Alaska. “I think the Senator owes her constituents an explanation,” Miller said.

Joe Miller Receives ‘A’ Rating from the NRA

Anchorage, Alaska — Joe Miller, candidate for US Senate from Alaska, received an ‘A’ rating from the National Rifle Association this week. NRA Chairman Chris Cox stated, “this rating indicates [Miller’s] support for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms.”

Miller, a Life Member and Benefactor of the NRA, said, “The Founders believed our Right to Keep and Bear Arms was such a vital liberty, they wrote it into the Constitution. No one will be a stronger advocate in its defense.”

Miller is an avid sportsman and gun collector. He served in combat during the First Gulf War, receiving the Bronze star. While a cadet a West Point, Joe was a member of the school’s champion rifle team and also is a former Federal Firearms License holder.

By contrast Miller’s opponent, Lisa Murkowski, sounds an uncertain trumpet in support of the Right to Keep and Bear Arms. As is true with so much of her voting record, Murkowski votes conservatively only when it is vital to her political survival, but otherwise joins with the Democrats more often than almost any other “Republican” senator. She voted against the majority of Republicans with the Democrats to confirm Eric Holder, the most anti-gun Attorney General in our nation’s history. She has been designated as a pro-gun compromiser by the Gun Owners of America. Additionally, she voted to expand the land covered by the National Park Service gun ban. While serving in the State House, she voted against the repeal of the concealed carried restrictions and against the State sale of confiscated arms. It is no wonder during her time in the House she received a ‘D’ rating by the NRA.

Miller pledges to be a strong and consistent supporter of the Right to Keep and Bear Arms. “This right is inalienable, and I will always be on the side of preserving this freedom,” said Miller.

Poll Shows Miller has Strong Showing amongst Committed, Likely Voters in Republican Primary

Anchorage, Alaska — Hellenthal and Associates, an Anchorage pollster, released a poll today finding that Joe Miller, candidate for US Senate (AK) is tracking at strongly among those voters strongly or moderately committed to their candidate and likely to vote in the August 24th Republican Primary. Campaign spokesman, Randy DeSoto, said, “This is good news for the campaign. Joe is also enjoying the highest statewide name recognition–75%–of any statewide challenger.” In the race seeking to unseat Governor Sean Parnell, challenger Bill Walker has 61% name recognition and Ralph Samuels has 56%. And in the race seeking to unseat US Representative Don Young, Sheldon Fisher has 33% name recognition. This is despite the fact that Miller’s campaign started April 19, months after any of the other statewide challengers.

Joe Miller stated, “I congratulate the hundreds of volunteers that are excited about turning this nation around. Through this tremendous volunteer network, we are starting to reach Alaskan voters. More Alaskans are also realizing that while Senator Murkowski talks the conservative talk in the state, she votes far too often with the Democrats in Washington.” Murkowski has voted over 300 times with the Democrats against the Republicans (seeWashington Post, The US Congress Votes Database, Votes Against Party). She supports cap and trade and refused to sign a Republican bill last month calling for the repeal of ObamaCare.
