Constitution Day 2010

Anchorage, Alaska. September 17, 2010 — Two hundred and twenty-three years ago delegates from throughout the United States assembled in Philadelphia to sign a world-changing document. The Declaration of Independence was our nation’s founding charter, stating the purpose of the new nation and government—to secure our God-given rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness–and the Constitution was the means the Founders adopted to that end. We commemorate that important date each year on Constitution Day, September 17.

The Constitution established a federal system of government granting specific powers from “the People” to the federal government and retaining the rest for themselves and the states. The founding document recognized that power has a tendency to corrupt and whenever too much power is placed within any branch of government or level of government, lost liberty inevitably follows. As James Madison, the “Father of the Constitution,” wrote so eloquently in the Federalist Papers, “But what is government itself, but the greatest of all reflections on human nature? If men were angels, no government would be necessary. If angels were to govern men, neither external nor internal controls on government would be necessary. In framing a government which is to be administered by men over men, the great difficulty lies in this: you must first enable the government to control the governed; and in the next place oblige it to control itself.”

In recent years, citizens all over the United States have recognized that our federal government needs to be brought back under control, and they’ve been making their voices heard in the public square and at the ballot box. The federal government has grown too big to the detriment of that power that should be reserved to the people and the states.

If given the honor of being your next United States Senator, I will pledge to support and defend the Constitution, as I did two decades ago as a newly commissioned officer when I took the oath at West Point. As a former judge at the state and federal level, I also understand the importance of maintaining the rule of law, under the Constitution, in order to preserve our free society. I will work with other members of Congress to bring the federal government back within its bounds, so we can preserve the American dream for ourselves and future generations. May we all look back on September 17, 1787, with gratitude for the incredible gift of the Constitution and the principles of freedom it established and a form of government that is the envy of the world.

Miller Sets Record Straight on Federal Spending

Anchorage, Alaska. September 10, 2010 — Contrary to his critics’ caricatures of his position, Republican US Senate Candidate Joe Miller categorically rejects the notion that his election would result in an end to federal spending in Alaska. “Given our current deficits, we, as a nation, will clearly have to curb overall federal spending over the course of the next several years,” Miller said. “But concurrently, the federal government needs to honor the promises made at statehood, and transfer control of our land and resources to the people of Alaska. Until that process is complete, I will fight for Alaska to get necessary federal dollars; however, it is imperative that we as Alaskans not settle for a few paltry crumbs from the federal table. We must vigorously fight for the future of Alaska, and that is bound up with control of the land and resources of our great state.”

Miller Picks Up Endorsements of Senators McConnell, McCain and Cornyn

Anchorage, Alaska. September 09, 2010 — Republican US Senate Nominee Joe Miller picked up the endorsements of three more United States Senators today. Senator Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, 2008 Presidential Candidate John McCain, and NRSC Chairman John Cornyn. “I am very grateful for their support,” Miller said. “I think this helps to send a message that Republicans are unified and remain single-minded about the task ahead: to confront the challenges our country is facing, and offer voters a viable alternative to the failed policies of the Democrat Majority.”

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell stated, “When Joe Miller earned the votes of Republican primary voters in Alaska, he earned my full support for his campaign to represent Alaskans in the US Senate.” He went on to say, “Washington sorely needs to stop the massive government expansion that is drowning our children and grandchildren in debt,” and that “when Joe wins this November, I know I can count on him to help lead this fight.”

Senator McCain said, “I am proud to support Joe Miller, and look forward to working with him in the US Senate. I admire Joe’s service to our nation from West Point to the US Army, and his commitment to fiscal conservative principles that Washington so desperately needs today.”

Senator Cornyn reiterated that “the NRSC is committed to doing everything that we can in order to ensure Joe Miller’s victory this November.” He further stated, “I have no doubt that he will be elected as the next US Senator from Alaska.”

With the general election less than two months away, it is time for Alaska Republicans to put aside their differences and come together to engage in the task at hand. “I know there are many in our party who supported Senator Murkowski, and I want to acknowledge her service to our state,” Miller said. “I hope that the Senator will join her colleagues in endorsing me, and ensure that America’s loyal opposition to the President’s agenda will have a voice in the United States Senate from Alaska.”

National Review: Joe Miller Fighting for Alaska

SEPTEMBER 7, 2010 4:00 A.M.

After toppling Sen. Lisa Murkowski in Alaska’s GOP Senate primary, Joe Miller is in no mood to compromise. Nor, he says, are fellow tea-party favorites who have won primaries across the country. “The people being elected outside of the establishment, like me, are not going to be co-opted,” he predicts in an interview with National Review Online.

Miller, a Fairbanks attorney and Yale Law grad, touts his primary win as the latest example of Americans’ expressing their frustration with Washington. He urges Republican leaders to “catch the wave.” If they don’t, he warns, “they will not be able to bring the new faces into line.” His reasoning is simple: “We are being elected for a purpose: to transform the federal government, to get us away from the brink of bankruptcy. The leadership has to embrace that message or else there will be real problems.”

Begich Now Advising McAdams

Anchorage, Alaska. September 3, 2010 — The Joe Miller for US Senate campaign has a quesion for Scott McAdams: If he is going to have Senator Begich, the man who virtually bankrupted Anchorage, running his campaign, how can he be trusted to address the nation’s growing debt crisis?

Scott McAdams says on his website, “This is my race for the taking. I have the full support of Sen. Mark Begich. I have the full support of the Alaska Democratic party.” Does he mean he will be able to explain and justify on behalf of the Democratic Party why they have added approximately $3 trillion to the National Debt without anything to show for it?

Our economic recovery has stalled and the national unemployment rate hovers near double digits: the Democratic Party is clearly not the answer.

Republican Joe Miller will be among the new breed of US Senate leaders expected in November to bring our nation back to fiscal responsibility.

Miller Statement On GOP Nomination

Fairbanks, Alaska. August 31, 2010 — Earlier this evening, I received a call from Senator Murkowski honorably conceding the race. I want to thank her for a hard fought contest.

Tomorrow, the general election begins.

But tonight I’d like to reflect back on the amazing feat we accomplished together. We started from a handful of people knowing who we were and what we stood for to now being the Republican Party nominee.

I want to thank the many people that made it all possible. First the people of the Great State of Alaska. As I traveled throughout the state, I met and spoke with more and more people who shared the same concern that our nation has reached a critical point, and we needed to change course.

I would like to especially thank my wife and children who have sacrificed quite a bit during this primary campaign. I love you all, and you are the most important reason I decided to enter this race.

I need to thank others who provided vital support to this campaign including Governor Sarah Palin, Governor Mike Huckabee, and the Tea Party movement. I’d also like to thank current and former state officials including Lt. Governor Loren Leman, Senators Fred Dyson and John Coghill, and Representatives Wes Keller and Tammy Wilson. Additionally, I’d also like to thank national conservative leaders and our local voices here in Alaska, Dan Fagan, Glenn Biegel, and Michael Dukes. But without our incredible volunteer network, this victory could not have been possible. They worked day and night to ensure success in this race. Thank you!

Now is the time for all Alaskans to come together and reach out with our core message of taking power from the federal government and bringing it back home to the people. If we continue to allow the federal government to live beyond its means, we will all soon have to live below ours.

I look forward to the challenge of the general election ahead. I intend to continue to travel to every corner of Alaska talking to folks about the answers needed to get our nation back on track and keep the American dream alive for ourselves and our children.

Thank you once again to the great people of this wonderful state. I look forward to the campaign ahead. God bless you and God bless Alaska!
