Religious Studies Professor: Murdering Babies Is Actually a ‘Christian’ Thing to Do

A religious studies professor and ordained minister in North Carolina wrote in a recent Op-Ed that the “abundant life” Jesus spoke of includes “trusting women to make abortion decisions.”

Rebecca Todd Peters — a social ethics professor of religious studies at Elon University — wrote in an opinion piece published in the Raleigh News & Observer and other news outlets in the Tar Heel State earlier this month that it is, in fact, a “Christian norm” to trust women with these choices.

Peters, author of the book “Trust Women: A Progressive Christian Argument for Reproductive Justice,” pointed to examples where it is morally acceptable in most Christian circles to allow for abortion.

“Prenatal health, Rape, Incest, and health of the Mother — PRIM. Evidence indicates widespread consensus and acceptance among many Christian denominations that abortion for PRIM reasons is justifiable,” Peters wrote.

The ordained Presbyterian minister contends that Christians simply need to expand their view of morality to encompass women being the final arbiters of what is right for them and their unborn child.

“By requiring women to justify their reasons for ending a pregnancy, this framework divides women who have abortions into two categories — the tragic and the damned,” according to the author.

“Women who have PRIM abortions are portrayed as tragic, not only deserving of access to abortion services but also equally deserving of public sympathy,” she said. “Women who have abortions for other reasons are stigmatized as morally unfit and labeled as selfish, cruel, and irresponsible. In short, they are the damned.”

She argued, “It is time for Christians to challenge the inadequacy, intolerance and misogyny of this paradigm of pregnancy and abortion.”

The professor dismissed adoption as a viable option for women who have become pregnant and do not want to be mothers, offering that only one percent of women make that decision after carrying their baby to term.

“Limiting our cultural approval of women’s reproductive decisions about the size, shape, and timing of their families to a narrow list of PRIM reasons flies in the face of Jesus’ teaching that he came to bring abundant life,” Peters wrote.

“If we truly value women and healthy families, we must accept that ‘I do not want to have a baby’ is an imminently appropriate reason to end a pregnancy. And we must trust that pregnant women are the only ones who are capable of making these decisions,” Peters concluded.

Micaiah Bilger, writing for LifeNews.com, finds Peters’ overall “trust women” to make their own moral decisions argument in relation to abortion “ridiculous.”

“While Christians believe God gave human beings a free will to decide whether to do good or evil, they also believe certain actions are morally evil — such as killing innocent human beings,” Bilger said.

“Peters almost certainly would not argue that Christians should allow men to beat their wives, or women to neglect their children because of free will. Yet, she claimed Christians should ‘trust women’ with the freedom to kill their own babies before birth.

“Christians believe babies in the womb are valuable, living human beings from the moment of conception, and killing innocent human beings is evil.”

Paula Rinehart, an elder in a Presbyterian church, and the author of “Sex and the Soul of Woman,” also takes exception to Peters’ views.

“Much of Peters’ argument rests on the theft of language. She commends women for the ‘moral courage’ of choosing abortion when they aren’t prepared to parent. (Missing in the conversation is what justice might look like for the child in the womb),” Rinehart wrote in The Federalist.

Rinehart pointed to a passage in Peters’ book where she recounts the moral choice she faced as a seminary student with an unwanted pregnancy.

“For Peters, this experience led to prayer and a moral quandary: ‘I knew I didn’t want to have a baby at that point in my life. I loved my husband, but things were bad between us. I was in seminary, and having a baby right then would seriously interrupt my studies and my future career. I believed that my work on issues of social justice was important; it was my calling…I knew that this was not the right time for me to become a mother.’”

Rinehart took Peters to task for trying to use scripture and church tradition to justify her views on abortion.

“Anyone well versed in the Old or New Testament realizes this religious studies professor had to don hiking boots with metal cleats to run roughshod over a vast terrain of church history and scripture,” Rinehart wrote.

“Clement of Alexandria, Tertullian, Augustine — none of these early church fathers considered intentionally destroying life in the womb as anything other than grave sin. That’s not to mention Jesus, who claimed that to care for ‘the least of these’ was to care, in fact, for him.”

Rinehart also said that central to church teaching through the years has been the belief that the image of God is with each person from conception to the point of natural death.

President Donald Trump quoted one of the most familiar biblical passages on this point while speaking at the annual Susan B. Anthony List Campaign for Life Gala this past spring.

“We celebrate all lives,” he said. “[E]very life is sacred and that every child is a precious gift from God.”

Trump continued. “As the Lord says in Jeremiah, ‘Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you … Before you were born, I set you apart.”

Campus Reform reached out to Peters to further explain her views regarding why is it morally preferable to abort rather than to raise or place an “unwanted” child up for adoption.

“As a Christian ethicist, I believe very strongly that abortion is a moral decision. Just as having a baby is a moral decision,” she said. “Because pregnancy represents the potential for human life, I believe that we ought to take the decision to have a child far more seriously than we do.”

Peters added: “The ethic of reproductive justice that I develop in my book offers a much more robust and demanding ethic in support of pregnancy, mothers and families than the current public discussion of abortion.” (For more from the author of “Religious Studies Professor: Murdering Babies Is Actually a ‘Christian’ Thing to Do” please click HERE)

State Moves to Require Universities to Provide Free Medication Abortions for Students

Soon in California, all universities may be required to provide abortion medication to students. . .

If the bill becomes law, it would make California the first state to enact such legislation. Right now, none of the 34 University of California or California State campuses provide abortion services.

The initiative is being funded by a number of private donors, who have already pledged to contribute millions of dollars to cover the start-up costs of launching the abortion program. The money will be used for things like ultrasound machines and staff training. If SB 320 becomes law, college campuses in California will be forced to implement these services by the year 2022. . .

A medication abortion involves a woman taking a series of two pills, mifepristone and misoprostol. The mifepristone, which blocks a woman’s body from producing the hormone progesterone necessary for maintaining a pregnancy, is taken in the clinic. Then the woman returns home and ingests the second pill, misoprostol, which causes the uterus to contract, cramp, and bleed, eventually expelling the baby. Medication abortion is used by mothers up to 10 weeks into a pregnancy.

According to Planned Parenthood, the nation’s number one abortion provider, you should “stock up on maxi pads, food, books or movies to help pass the time, and a heating pad for cramps. Make sure you have some pain medication — but don’t take aspirin because it can make you bleed more.” (Read more from “State Moves to Require Universities to Provide Free Medication Abortions for Students” HERE)

Abortions and Tonsillectomies? No Difference to Taxpayers, Says Dem Candidate

Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker’s Democratic opponent said in a recent interview that taxpayers should pay for abortions like they pay for “tonsillectomy or any other procedure.”

In an interview with the Weekly Standard’s John McCormack, Democrat Tony Evers also said “pro-life Democrats are welcome in the party, and I respect their decisions on this issue.”

TWS: One story I’m interested in is the role of pro-life Democrats: Do they have a place in the party? There’ve been fewer and fewer in Congress. What is your message to them? Do you want to see Medicaid funding of abortion generally? I know that’s restricted in Wisconsin.

EVERS: Yeah, we have a big tent here in Wisconsin. We have to in order to win elections. And yes pro-life Democrats are welcome in the party, and I respect their decisions on this issue. But we need to have the Medicaid money be available for all people and restricting it because of a certain procedure, whether it’s a tonsillectomy or any other procedure, seems to me a foolhardy thing to do. So, yes, we have to respect people’s people’s pro-life beliefs, and certainly they’re welcome in the Democratic party. Absolutely.

Sure, taxpayer funding for abortion will attract pro-lifers to the Democratic Party. Right. (For more from the author of “Abortions and Tonsillectomies? No Difference to Taxpayers, Says Dem Candidate” please click HERE)

Republicans Block Senator Rand Paul’s Effort to Defund Planned Parenthood

Senator Paul was attempting to add an amendment to the appropriations bill funding the departments of Labor and Health and Human Services, to stop Planned Parenthood from receiving federal funding. . .

There are a limited number of amendments that can be added to a bill, so to fill up space, GOP leadership inserted a useless amendment that would change funding in a program by $1.

“One of the top priorities for a Republican Congress that professes pro-life values on the campaign trail should be to stop taxpayer funding for abortion providers,” Senator Paul said in a statement. “This is our chance to turn our words into action, stand up for the sanctity of life, and speak out for the most innocent among us that have no voice.”

The March for Life issued a statement thanking Senator Paul for his efforts.

“March for Life is grateful to Senator Paul and to those who voted in favor of an amendment to the appropriations bill that would have banned funding to abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood, our nation’s largest abortion provider and subject of Department of Justice investigation into the trafficking of aborted baby body parts. Unfortunately, many Senators who claim to be pro-life defied their constituents and the consensus of the American public by giving the abortion industry a pass. Almost two-thirds of Americans say they do not want to fund abortion with their tax dollars. Disentangling American taxpayers from the abortion industry is long overdue. Our elected representatives should join the national consensus and put an end to taxpayer funding of abortion, or risk being voted out of office,” March for Life President Jeanne Mancini said.

Appeals Court Sides With Abortion Clinics, Blocks Alabama’s Dismemberment Abortion Ban

A federal appeals court in Alabama found Wednesday that the state’s ban on the “dilation and evacuation” abortion procedure, dubbed a “dismemberment” abortion by its opponents, is unconstitutional.

This abortion method takes place between 15 and 18 weeks of pregnancy and is the most common method of second trimester abortion in the state of Alabama. It was banned in 2016 but that ban was immediately challenged by the abortion providers West Alabama Women’s Center in Tuscaloosa and the Alabama Women’s Center in Huntsville. . .

“The State has an actual and substantial interest in lessening, as much as it can, the gruesomeness and brutality of dismemberment abortions,” they write. “That interest is so obvious that the plaintiffs do not contest it.” . . .

Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall was disappointed in the ruling but was glad that the Court acknowledged the barbarity of the procedure.

“I am disappointed that the 11th Circuit sided with the lower court in this case, but it is encouraging that the court recognized the State’s important and legitimate interests in ending barbaric abortion procedures–in this case, procedures that literally tear apart babies living inside their mothers’ wombs,” he said in a statement. NARAL Introduces Its Very Own Custom Abortion-Themed Ice Cream Flavor

Pro-abortion Portland residents can now enjoy a brand-new custom, abortion-themed flavor of ice cream, “Rocky Roe v. Wade” at a series of NARAL-sponsored ice cream socials designed to foment “resistance” to Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.

NARAL Pro-Choice Oregon has partnered with What’s The Scoop, a Portland area ice-cream parlor, to create the custom abortion-flavored ice cream.

If you’re not based in Portland, don’t worry! You can still get your pint of Rocky Roe v. Wade shipped directly, according to Grayson Dempsey, NARAL Pro-Choice Oregon’s local leader. Sadly, though, if you order your ice cream online, you won’t have the honor of having your Rocky Roe v. Wade scooped by bona fide abortion superstars.

Nothing says, “taking a woman’s, heart-rending decision on how to handle an unplanned pregnancy seriously” like issuing an abortion ice cream flavor, of course.

When a local Portland political consultant took Dempsey to task for trivializing a very serious issue, Dempsey got defensive. When told the event was “disgusting,” Dempsey responded by accusing Lockwood of “shaming women” and “terrorizing” a local business. The Women’s Center, One of Only Two Abortion Clinics in Nashville, Closing Its Doors

The Women’s Center, which has operated in the city since 1990, stopped taking new patients over the weekend and is now referring women to clinics in Knoxville and Bristol, said clinic attorney Thomas Jessee.

The center is closing because the owners have agreed to sell the building and the details of the sale are being finalized, Jessee said. The Women’s Center intends to reopen and is now searching for a new location, he said. . .

The closure of the Women’s Center is a significant blow for women’s access to abortion in Tennessee. The center is at least the third clinic to close in recent years, leaving only seven others throughout the state. In Nashville, a national hub for the health care industry, Planned Parenthood is now the only abortion option. . .

In addition to being one of the few options for women in Tennessee, The Women’s Center also has a record of fighting in court to preserve women’s abortion options. In 2002, the Nashville center successfully challenged a law requiring abortion clinics to be licensed as ambulatory surgery centers, which would likely have increased abortion prices. The state reintroduced this law again in 2012, but later abandoned enforcement after it became clear the requirement was unconstitutional.

The Women’s Center also sued the state to challenge a new law requiring a 48-hour waiting period for all abortions. That lawsuit continues today, but will likely continue even if The Women’s Center shuts down because other clinics, including Planned Parenthood, later joined as plaintiffs. FDA Acquiring Aborted Baby Parts for ‘Humanized Mice’

On July 25, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) signed a new contract to acquire human fetal tissue for purposes of transplanting into humanized mice.

“…the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Office of Acquisitions and Grant Services (OAGS) intends to award a sole source contract to Advanced Bioscience Resources, Inc., ABR is the only company in the U. S. capable of supplying tissues suitable for HM research. No other company or organization is capable of fulfilling the need,” according to the FDA report. . .

“The Government intends to solicit and negotiate directly with Advanced Bioscience Resources (ABR) Inc. and no solicitation will be issued. The objective is to acquire Tissue for Humanized Mice,” as stated in the FDA report.

“The FDA’s June 13 presolicitation notice contended that Advanced Biosciences Resources was the only organization that could fulfill the new contract,” reported CNS News.

The House Appropriations Committee approved a bill to fund the Department of Health and Human Services for the fiscal year of 2019 in July. The bill includes language prohibiting the federal funding of research using human fetal tissue obtained through abortions. Pro-Abortion GOP Gov. Signs ‘Nasty Woman Act’

Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker, a pro-abortion Republican, signed the “NASTY Woman Act” into law Friday. The legislation repeals a 173-year-old law banning abortion in the state.

The bill’s proponents argue that it is necessary just in case Roe v. Wade is overturned so that the state is not able to enforce that law again.

The NASTY Woman Act – short for Negating Archaic Statutes Targeting Young Women – also repealed other laws that have gone enforced for generations, including bans on adultery and restrictions on contraception.

Critics argue that the bill is unnecessary, since these older laws are largely moot due to a 1981 rulingby the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court that upheld a right to abortion access. . .

The Republican governor has long been an advocate of abortion and contraception, Last November, he signed a law requiring the state’s insurers to cover birth control without a copay that included only a narrow exemption for churches and religious institutions who might object on religious grounds. Pro-Life Priests Arrested for Prayerful Protest at Late-Term Abortionist’s Clinic in DC

By Townhall. Yesterday morning, two Catholic priests (along with two additional pro-life activists) were arrested for praying inside of a Washington, D.C. abortion facility.

The “Red Rose Rescue”–where pro-life individuals peacefully enter an abortuary, distribute red roses to mothers as a symbol of life, and quietly speak with and pray for them–was intentionally scheduled for the same day as the sentencing hearing of two different pro-life activists, arrested in December 2017 for participating in a rescue at the same clinic.

Those arrested yesterday were named as Father Dave Nix of the Archdiocese of Denver, Father Fidelis Moscinski of the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal, Will Goodman, and a woman who goes only by the name of “Baby Jane Doe”. Additional pro-life activists stood outside in the rain, praying, as the four were handcuffed by police and taken to jail.

The rescue took place in D.C.’s Capital Women’s Services, where the notorious Dr. Stephen Chase Brigham works as a late-term abortionist.

According to Operation Rescue (a pro-life activist organization and watchdog), Dr. Brigham is considered to be “the worst abortionist in America.” He is so bad, in fact, that the National Abortion Federation (certainly no pillar of virtue itself) allegedly revoked his membership years ago. 2 Catholic Priests, 2 Activists Arrested for Pro-Life Witness Inside Abortion Center

By Life Site News. Two Catholic priests and two pro-life activists were arrested for refusing to leave an abortion facility this morning, where they distributed red roses and begged the mothers inside to choose life.

Father Fidelis Moscinski of the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal, Father Dave Nix of the Archdiocese of Denver, Will Goodman, and an unidentified woman entered Capital Women’s Services, the abortuary operated by Steven Chase Brigham at 6323 Georgia Ave NW, Suite 210 shortly after 9:00 a.m.

They were inside for roughly two hours, and then, because they refused to cooperate with the police on scene, were carried out one by one. Goodman and Fr. Nix eventually stood up to get inside police cars; Fr. Fidelis and the unnamed woman, who goes by “Baby Jane Doe” in solidarity with aborted children, were both limp as officers loaded them into police vehicles. “Baby Jane Doe,” who participated in a May 26 Red Rose Rescue at the same facility, will not give her name to the police. After her last arrest, the charges against her were dropped and she was released from police custody without ever revealing her name.
