It’s Time for Biden to Halt ‘What Looks Like a COVID-19 Cover-up’

China is testing President Biden, but his party is still preoccupied with Donald Trump. Chinese authorities refused to provide World Health Organization investigators with raw data on early COVID-19 cases that could help them determine how and when the coronavirus spread in China. The stakes in learning as much as we can from this pandemic couldn’t be higher. But it’s unclear if our new leaders are ready to confront China’s increasingly intransigent leaders, who are keen to promote unlikely theories on the origins of the virus that absolve them of culpability. . .

President Biden has yet to speak publicly about China’s refusal to hand over raw data on early cases, but Jake Sullivan, his national security adviser, issued a statement. “At this critical moment, protecting the WHO’s credibility is a paramount priority,” he said. “We have deep concerns about the way in which the early findings of the COVID-19 investigation were communicated and questions about the process used to reach them.”

The statement was better than nothing, but there was no call to action or mention of potential consequences if China fails to comply, which is exceedingly likely given Beijing’s track record on transparency and COVID-19. . .

The Chinese government should be given a deadline to turn early COVID-19 case data over to the WHO and there must be clear consequences for failure to comply. Any number of sanctions, including asset freezes and travel bans for China’s leaders, should be on the table. We should also strongly encourage the WHO to immediately send its team of investigators back to China. They should remain there until China’s leaders fully cooperate, and if they don’t, team members should hold daily press conferences to shame them. . .

China doves and free-trade-at-all-costs types will insist that we can’t afford to confront China, which is our third largest trading partner. But when you stack up the economic cost that may arise from rising tensions with China against the potential cost of enduring another pandemic, the choice is clear. It’s time for Joe Biden and other world leaders to send a clear, united message to China that the world will not allow them to persist in what looks like a COVID-19 coverup. WASHINGTON POST EDITOR: Why Is Biden Cozying up to a Known ‘Dictator?’ (VIDEO)

The Washington Post’s Editorial Page Editor, Fred Hiatt, on Sunday slammed the Biden administration for failing to do more to hold Saudi Arabia accountable for the death of reporter Jamal Khashoggi. The Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman ordered Khashoggi’s assassination back in 2018, a newly-released report stated. . .

“First, I think this was a missed opportunity to rethink the alliance, and how important is Saudi Arabia now to the United States and why,” Hiatt explained to ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos. “Why are we making an alliance with a dictator who is making trouble in the region?”

Leaked Report: Border Officials Project 13,000 Unaccompanied Child Migrants in May

A Customs and Border Protection staffer told top administration officials Thursday the agency is projecting a peak of 13,000 unaccompanied children crossing the border in May, sources directly familiar with the discussion told Axios.

That projection would exceed the height of the 2019 crisis, which led to the infamous “kids-in-cages” disaster. It also underscores a rapidly escalating crisis for the Biden administration. . .

The administration is already preparing to quickly expand its network of migrant-child shelters, which have had their capacity sharply reduced because of coronavirus protocols. . .

HHS, which oversees the child shelter network, is talking with the Pentagon about finding additional overflow sites, which often resemble big tents. Military bases were used during the 2014 and 2019 crises as additional temporary facilities. Potential Biden NASA Pick Has Ties to Chinese Company Blacklisted by Pentagon

President Joe Biden’s potential pick to lead NASA has a history of investments tied to a Chinese technology giant and has advocated for cooperating with China in space.

Former senator Bill Nelson (D., Fla.) is reportedly jockeying to lead America’s space agency under Biden. Sources close to Nelson say that his closed-door campaign for the position is more than a rumor. As a former career astronaut, Nelson would seem a natural to lead the agency, but Nelson’s financial and political ties to China could complicate his potential confirmation.

Sen. Rick Scott (R., Fla.) criticized Nelson on the campaign trail for holding between $3,003 and $45,000 in a mutual fund invested in China Mobile, a Chinese state-owned telecommunications company. At the time, Nelson dismissed the revelation as unimportant compared with Scott’s own investments. China Mobile is China’s largest telecommunications provider, and the Department of Defense in November blacklisted the company, along with 19 other major Chinese companies, for its ties to the Chinese military. Adjacent state-owned Chinese businesses have developed 5G satellite technology that NASA may need to make note of in its daily operations. . .

Beyond financial interests, Nelson touts a long track record of championing closer ties with China in space. In 2004, Nelson met with both the Chinese ambassador and Chinese astronaut Yang Liwei in an intimate meeting to discuss space issues and the potential for Sino-American cooperation in space. Nelson was among the first Americans to congratulate Yang on his successful launch, saying that he hoped China could emerge as a key partner in American space initiatives, while some Republicans remained troubled by China’s growing space ambitions. Nelson told the Chinese ambassador that he wanted closer ties with Beijing in space efforts, even going as far as supporting a joint mission to Mars with China in their 2004 meeting. Senate Confirms Jennifer Granholm to Lead Energy Department

The Senate confirmed President Biden’s 10th cabinet member on Thursday afternoon, as a few nominees face bipartisan pushback. Former Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm (D) was confirmed by the Senate to serve as Biden’s Secretary of Energy.

While she received bipartisan support, Granholm’s vote was closer than other nominees brought forth by the president. The Senate confirmed her by a vote of 64-35.

At the time of her nomination, Biden touted Granholm’s record on clean energy. She will be tasked with assisting Biden in transitioning the country predominately to clean energy by 2050, with carbon neutrality. (Read more from “Senate Confirms Jennifer Granholm to Lead Energy Department” HERE)

Judge Deals Blow to the Nationwide Eviction Moratorium

Who knew the feds telling property owners they couldn’t kick out tenants who didn’t pay their rent might be unconstitutional? A federal judge in Texas did, ruling on Thursday that the CDC’s eviction moratorium violated the U.S. Constitution.

“Although the COVID-19 pandemic persists, so does the Constitution,” wrote Judge Barker in a 21-page opinion.

Instituted under President Trump, the moratorium on evictions made it a crime for landlords to evict certain tenants who are unable to pay rent during the pandemic. President Biden and Congress extended the moratorium through March.

At question in the case was whether or not a nationwide eviction moratorium violated the limited powers of the federal government. The judge found that it did, noting the federal government has never claimed such a broad power throughout the nation’s history until last year. WATCH: Biden Pick Accused of Bullying Nuns

Republican Nebraska Sen. Ben Sasse hammered President Joe Biden’s nominee Xavier Beccara Wednesday for “bullying” the Little Sisters of the Poor.

Sasse tore into the HHS nominee over his longstanding legal battles with the Little Sisters of the Poor during Wednesday’s confirmation hearing. The Nebraska Republican reminded Becerra that he said earlier Wednesday that he never sued the nuns.

Sasse called this “a pretty interesting way of reframing your bullying.”

“You had actually sued the government, who had given an exemption to the nuns,” Sasse said. “Can you explain to us what the Little Sisters of the Poor were doing wrong?” . . .

“You say you didn’t sue the nuns,” Sasse continued. “You sued the federal government that was keeping you from making sure that the nuns had to buy contraceptive insurance. Were the nuns going to get pregnant?” (Read more from “Biden Pick Accused of Bullying Nuns” HERE)

Kamala Has to Remind Joe to Wear His Mask

Vice President Kamala Harris had to remind President Joe Biden to re-don his mask Thursday after he left it at a podium during a speech at the White House. . .

“For God’s sake, wear a mask!” Biden said during his speech, marking the 50 millionth shot of the coronavirus vaccine administered to Americans.

But after his speech, Biden wandered away from the podium without his mask and spoke to a nurse who had administered vaccine shots earlier in the event.

As Biden approached her to greet Harris, the vice president looked at him and asked,”Where’s your mask?” (Read more from “Kamala Has to Remind Joe to Wear His Mask” HERE)

Judge Overturns Biden’s Deportation ‘Pause’ Indefinitely

A federal judge in Texas on Wednesday extended his order halting President Biden’s 100-day pause on the deportation of illegal immigrants.

After issuing a two-week restraining order on Jan. 26, U.S. District Judge Drew Tipton indefinitely banned enforcement of Biden’s Inauguration Day memorandum.

The order comes in a lawsuit by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton that argues Biden’s policy violates federal law and an agreement with the Department of Homeland Security requiring that Texas be consulted before any such move.

Biden’s 100-day pause was part of his effort to reverse the immigration policies of the Trump administration, stopping through executive action border wall construction and the Migrant Protection Protocols. He’s now pushing legislation that would include a path to citizenship for most of the illegal immigrants in the country, which various estimates place between 11 and 22 million. Democrats Call on President Biden to Surrender Sole Control of Nuclear Weapons

Congressional Democrats sent a letter to President Joe Biden this week urging him to give up his sole authority to launch nuclear weapons, Politico reported Tuesday.

The lawmakers said they want to reform the “the decision-making process the United States uses in its command and control of nuclear forces.” . . .

And that is worrisome, the 31 Democratic letter-signers stated, citing actions of both former Presidents Donald Trump and Richard Nixon:

[V]esting one person with this authority entails real risks. Past presidents have threatened to attack other countries with nuclear weapons or exhibited behavior that caused other officials to express concern about the president’s judgment.

While any president would presumably consult with advisors before ordering an attack, there is no requirement to do so. The military is obligated to carry out the order if they assess it is legal under the laws of war. Under the current posture of U.S. nuclear forces, that attack would happen in minutes.
