White House Set to Impose Sanctions on Russia

The Biden administration will slap sanctions on Russian officials and businesses on Tuesday after the US intelligence community concluded that opposition leader Alexei Navalny had been nearly killed by a nerve-agent poisoning attack carried out by a Russian spy agency.

The sanctions will be imposed under the US Chemical and Biological Weapons Control and Warfare Elimination Act for 14 businesses.

Administration officials did not identify the Russian officials who would be targeted by the sanctions – the first against Moscow by President Biden.

The action was taken in coordination with the European Union, which has already hit some Russian officials with sanctions over Navalny, a top rival of President Vladimir Putin. (Read more from “White House Set to Impose Sanctions on Russia” HERE)

U.S. Admiral Warns of ‘Real Possibility’ of Nuclear War

The admiral who heads the US Strategic Command — which is responsible for nuclear deterrence — is calling on the nation’s military and civilian leaders to seek new ways to face threats by Russia and China, including the “real possibility” of nuclear conflict.

Adm. Charles Richard warned that Moscow and Beijing have “begun to aggressively challenge international norms” in “ways not seen since the height of the Cold War.”

“There is a real possibility that a regional crisis with Russia or China could escalate quickly to a conflict involving nuclear weapons, if they perceived a conventional loss would threaten the regime or state,” he wrote in the February issue of Proceedings, the US Naval Institute’s monthly magazine.

“Consequently, the U.S. military must shift its principal assumption from ‘nuclear employment is not possible’ to ‘nuclear employment is a very real possibility,’ and act to meet and deter that reality.”

He added: “We cannot approach nuclear deterrence the same way. It must be tailored and evolved for the dynamic environment we face.” (Read more from “U.S. Admiral Warns of ‘Real Possibility’ of Nuclear War” HERE)

Top Cybersecurity Firm: Massive Russian Cyberattack Was Waged From Within U.S.

The hackers behind the major cyberattack against several federal government agencies used computers within the U.S., according to the cybersecurity firm FireEye.

The massive cyberattack was conducted using servers and computers within the U.S. and often from within the same town or city as the victims of the attack, FireEye told The New York Times. Because the attack came from domestic servers, the perpetrators were able to evade the National Security Agency’s (NSA) authority, which does not extend to domestic private sector networks.

“[Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR)] is deliberate, they are sophisticated, and they don’t have the same legal restraints as we do here in the West,” former government intelligence analyst Adam Darrah told The Times.

The extent of the cyberattack, meanwhile, is now estimated to be much larger than originally expected, according to The Times. It is now expected that Russian actors accessed about 250 U.S. networks, including Fortune 500 companies and several government agencies such as the Department of Homeland Security, the Treasury Department and the National Nuclear Security Administration. CNN Sucked up to Communist China and Russia to Own Trump, and the Lies Backfired

CNN celebrated the triumphant successes of the United States’s largest adversaries evidently controlling the pandemic virus, relying on self-reported data from the oppressive regimes in the early days of the pandemic.

In March, CNN opened a report on the Kremlin’s coronavirus response, lauding the Russian president’s accomplishments in keeping the nation safe. . .

On testing, the network praised Russia and admonished American progress. “According to CDC figures, the United States only picked up the pace in testing at the beginning of March, while Russia says it has been testing en masse since early February.” . . .

Several months later, Russian officials have now admitted on Monday that the nation’s death toll is, in reality, three times higher than previously claimed, with more than 186,000 Russians having succumbed to the Wuhan virus. More than 3 million Russians have been infected, giving Russia the fourth-highest caseload in the world, according to the Guardian.

South Korea Scrambles Jets as Chinese, Russian Aircraft Enter Air Defense Zone

South Korea said it scrambled fighter jets in response to an intrusion into its air defence identification zone by 19 Russian and Chinese military aircraft on Tuesday.

Four Chinese warplanes entered the Korea Air Defence Identification Zone (KADIZ) followed by 15 Russian aircraft, according to South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS).

The South Korean military dispatched air force fighters to take tactical measures.

The South Korean military said the Chinese military had informed South Korea that its planes were carrying out routine training before the Chinese aircraft entered the KADIZ. (Read more from “South Korea Scrambles Jets as Chinese, Russian Aircraft Enter Air Defense Zone” HERE)

Trump Says Media Is Exaggerating Extent of Recent Cyberattack on U.S.

President Donald Trump responded to the unprecedented cyberattack on multiple American government departments and private businesses, saying that the attack is “well under control” and being exaggerated by the “Fake News Media.”

Trump, who had not publicly commented on the attack until Saturday morning, placed blame on China, contradicting some U.S. government officials – including Secretary of State Mike Pompeo – who have said that Russia was the most likely actor to have launched it.

“The Cyber Hack is far greater in the Fake News Media than in actuality. I have been fully briefed and everything is well under control,” Trump tweeted Saturday morning, adding that the media was afraid to acknowledge that it could have been China, not Russia, who carried out the attack. . .

The attack used an array of sophisticated tools to tap into dozens of government and private networks, including the Pentagon, the Treasury and U.S. nuclear laboratories. Intelligence agencies told Congress that the attack was likely carried out by the S.V.R., a top Russian intelligence agency that descended from the K.G.B.

In a joint statement released Wednesday, the F.B.I., Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency and Office of the Director of National Intelligence said that they were “investigating and gathering intelligence in order to attribute, pursue, and disrupt the responsible threat actors.” (Read more from “Trump Says Media Is Exaggerating Extent of Recent Cyberattack on U.S.” HERE)

U.S. Vows ‘Swift Action’ if Defense Networks Hit by Alleged Russia Hack

The U.S. military’s cyberwarfare branch has promised a quick response if the nation’s defense networks were found to have been infiltrated in a major hack that has rocked the federal government.

As of Monday afternoon, the Department of Commerce and the Department of the Treasury have acknowledged that their communications were affected by a yet unidentified perpetrator exploiting a vulnerability in an update to Orion products offered by software company SolarWinds. A third agency, the Department of Homeland Security, is also believed to have been affected, according to Reuters.

The full extent of the breach has yet to be identified, but SolarWinds’ extensive customer list includes a range of other U.S. government agencies, including all five branches of the military. Contacted by Newsweek, the Defense Department’s cyber-focused combatant command said it was prepared to act immediately if its communications were determined to have been impacted.

“U.S. Cyber Command is postured for swift action should any defense networks be compromised,” a spokesperson for the command told Newsweek. “We are in close coordination with our interagency, coalition, industry, and academic partners to assess and mitigate this issue. As is our mission, we will continue to conduct cyberspace operations in defense of our Nation.” (Read more from “U.S. Vows ‘Swift Action’ if Defense Networks Hit by Alleged Russia Hack” HERE)

Republican Senate Releases Evidence From Investigation Showing China, Russia Ties

. . .The Senate, under GOP leadership, just released some disturbing evidence about Hunter [Biden].

And once again, the media is all mum’s the word about it:

“These new records confirm the connections between the Biden family and the communist Chinese government, as well as the links between Hunter Biden’s business associates and the Russian government, and further support the Committees’ September 23, 2020 report’s finding that such relationships created counterintelligence and extortion concerns,” the senators wrote in the five-page report, which was followed by 65 pages of evidence.

Many have wondered how close Biden has been to communist China and other foreign entities. These new records raise more questions.

Namely, what kind of loyalty does the Biden family have toward China? The Senate even worried about “counterintelligence and extortion concerns.” (Read more from “Republican Senate Releases Evidence From Investigation Showing China, Russia Ties” HERE)

Russia Says It Threatened a U.S. Warship Out of Territory U.S. Says It Wasn’t in

The Russian Ministry of Defense stated that one of its ships on Tuesday intercepted a U.S. Navy destroyer in its sovereign waters and successfully drove it out with a threat to ram the intruding vessel.

The U.S. Navy denies this account, asserting its ship was not in Russian waters and had not been “expelled” from them, Voice of America (VOA) reported.

Moscow claimed it found the USS John S. McCain 1.2 miles inside its maritime territory in Peter the Great Bay, an inlet on the Sea of Japan which surrounds the Russian port of Vladivostok, near the border with North Korea, according to the BBC.

The Russian Pacific Fleet’s Admiral Vinogradov, a destroyer-class warship, reportedly hailed the McCain and warned its crew of “the possibility of using ramming to get the intruder out of the territorial waters,” the Defense Ministry said. . .

“The Russian Federation’s statement about this mission is false. USS John S. McCain was not ‘expelled’ from any nation’s territory,” the Navy stated on Tuesday. (Read more from “Russia Says It Threatened a U.S. Warship Out of Territory U.S. Says It Wasn’t in” HERE)
