Top Scientist Has Meltdown When Confronted With Absurdity of Men in Women’s Sports

. . .On Saturday, world-renowned astrophysicist Niel deGrasse Tyson appeared on British comedian Konstantin Kisin’s “TRIGGERnometry” podcast to defend his recent statement that gender exists “on a spectrum.”

When Kisin asked Tyson about the comment, Tyson responded, “If who you decide is male and female in the street is a construct of style and trends, and what the beauty industrial complex wants you to see . . . then maybe some people want to be fluid within that gender.” . . .

Kisin and Tyson then moved on to discuss the pressing issue of men competing in women’s sports.

When Kisin pointed out that the differences between men and women were not just psychological but physical as well, giving them an advantage over women in sports, Tyson pointed out that athletes in several sports were already divided based on weight to even out the competition.

“Then you find ways to slice the population so that whatever the event is interestingly contested,” he said. “So, for example, I wrestled in my life. I was captain of my high school wrestling team. It would be unfair for me at 190 pounds, which is what I was back then, to wrestle someone 120 pounds.” (Read more from “Top Scientist Has Meltdown When Confronted With Absurdity of Men in Women’s Sports” HERE)

Scientists Unearth Giant Fish That Likely Ate Our Human Ancestors

A study published Wednesday introduced us to a new species of giant fish that may have eaten our human ancestors.

The study, published in PLOS One, describes a 350-million-year-old enormous fish that reigned in our oceans long before the dinosaurs. The creature has distinct, deadly fangs that allowed it to hunt in river waterways in the ancient supercontinent Gondwana. Its remains were found in a fossil assemblage near Makhanda/Grahamstown, South Africa.

At up to 9-feet in length, it is the largest boney fish on record from the time period (Late Devonian) and is regarded as predatory. These features and behaviors prompted researchers to name it Hyneria udlezinye, or “one who eats others.”

Scientists: ‘Young Blood’ Contains a Substance That Regenerates Aging Muscles

Dracula may have been onto something, as a new study finds “young blood” could reverse the aging process. Researchers from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center find that transfusions of serum may hold the key to preventing age-related diseases – including Alzheimer’s.

In experiments, giving older mice transfusions of certain proteins in blood plasma from youthful peers regenerated the rodents’ muscle cells. . .

Study authors find that “circulating shuttles” called extracellular vesicles (or EVs) deliver genetic instructions to a longevity protein known as Klotho. The team discovered older mice had fewer of these proteins than their younger counterparts. This may hold the key to why muscle power dwindles with age. The study builds on decades of research on mice showing young blood restores youthful features to cells and tissues.

“We wondered if extracellular vesicles might contribute to muscle regeneration because these couriers travel between cells via the blood and other bodily fluids,” says lead author Dr. Amrita Sahu. “Like a message in a bottle, EVs deliver information to target cells.”

The researchers collected serum samples from young mice. When they injected the young blood into aging mice, injured muscles regenerated and recovered their youthful function. Those receiving a placebo treatment remained frail. (Read more from “Scientists: ‘Young Blood’ Contains a Substance That Regenerates Aging Muscles” HERE)

Scientists Extend Mice’s Lives by 23 Percent, Humans Could Be Next

Israeli scientists have found a way to increase the life expectancy of mice by 23 percent, in groundbreaking research that they hope to replicate in humans — who could then reach an average age of 120 years old.

The researchers boosted the life expectancy of 250 rodents by increasing the supply of SIRT6, a protein that normally wanes in the aging process, the Times of Israel reported.

In the peer-reviewed research published in the journal Nature Communications, the scientists also said the protein-enriched animals were less prone to cancer.

“The change in life expectancy is significant when you consider that an equivalent jump in human life expectancy would have us living on average until almost 120,” Prof. Haim Cohen of Bar-Ilan University in Ramat Gan told the news outlet.

“The changes we saw in mice may be translatable to humans, and if so that would be exciting,” added Cohen, whose lab is working on identifying drugs that may allow the SIRT6 to safely be spiked in people. (Read more from “Scientists Extend Mice’s Lives by 23 Percent, Humans Could Be Next” HERE)

Scientists: This Is the Maximum Age Humans Can Physically Reach

Researchers believe they have identified the upper limit of human mortality: 150 years old. . .

Using an iPhone app and a huge amount of medical data from volunteers in the UK and US, scientists think they’ve confirmed the maximum age people can anticipate ever living to, the researchers wrote in a study published Tuesday in the journal Nature Communications.

Artificial intelligence analyzed the health- and fitness-related information, and researchers determined that the human lifespan is most significantly based on two data points: biological age (associated with stress, lifestyle and chronic diseases) and resilience (how quickly the person returns to normal after responding to a stressor).

Using these findings and related trends, researchers reckoned that, at around 120 to 150 years old, the human body shows “a complete loss” of resilience, resulting in an inability to recover, according to a press release. Scientists Develop Method That Allows Mammals to Breath Through Their Butts

In what sounds like a “South Park” episode, Japanese scientists have developed a procedure that allows lab animals to “breathe” out of their rectum.

In a new study published last week, scientists using an enema of oxygen-carrying liquid proved that oxygen-deprived animals — and maybe people — can be saved via their bottoms.

According to the New York Times, Dr. Takanori Takebe, of the Tokyo Medical and Dental University and the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, started alternative oxygen-delivery research during his father’s struggle with lung disease.

While ventilators are helpful, they’re not always available and can break. “We clearly need different strategies to help out patients with severe lung failure,” Dr. Takebe told the Times.

Through his trials, Takebe first did what sounds like a reverse fart — pumping oxygen up the rectums of anesthetized, oxygen-deprived mice. The procedure would have been too painful and not useful for humans as the mice intestines had to be scraped first. Scientists Are Mixing Human Body Parts With Robots and Monkeys. We Don’t Want to See What’s Next

It’s been a big month for sci-fi primates. On Apr. 8, Elon Musk’s start-up Neuralink announced they created a cyborg monkey who can play MindPong using a brain chip. The following week, scientists at the Salk Institute in California revealed they successfully grew human-macaque embryos in test tubes. These hybrid babies were aborted at 20 days.

The ethical implications of such experiments are now debated with a resigned shrug. There’s a sense of inevitability to it all. Powerful humans will indulge in any behavior that’s both pleasurable and possible. What could be more pleasurable than playing God?

The practical question isn’t how to stop them, but how to survive in their technocratic age. Where do we draw such boundaries? Do we reflexively reject technology’s terms and conditions? Or, when it’s our turn to get chipped, do we take the plunge?

Ultimately, these are religious questions. Many traditional cultures view living beings as sacred. Each creature is endowed with a spark of consciousness and is therefore deserving of dignity, even those we kill and eat. From this standpoint, tinkering with the fundamental make-up of any living being is a form of blasphemy, especially in the case of humans. Satellites and Spacecraft Malfunction as Earth’s Magnetic Field Mysteriously Weakens

Earth’s magnetic field, which is vital to protecting life on our planet from solar radiation, is mysteriously weakening.

On average the planet’s magnetic field has lost almost 10% of its strength over the last two centuries, but there is a large localised region of weakness stretching from Africa to South America.

Known as the South Atlantic Anomaly, the field strength in this area has rapidly shrunk over the past 50 years just as the area itself has grown and moved westward.

Over the past five years a second centre of minimum intensity has developed southwest of Africa, which researchers believe indicates the anomaly could split into two separate cells.

The anomaly is causing technical difficulties for satellites orbiting the Earth. (Read more from “Satellites and Spacecraft Malfunction as Earth’s Magnetic Field Mysteriously Weakens” HERE)

Why Women Live Longer Than Men: Science Has the Answer Now

It is a known fact that women live longer than men, irrespective of the place they are born or choose to spend their life. Scientists have long wondered the reason and now it looks like they have come real close to the cause.

The researchers from the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) claim that the secret may lie in the second X chromosome, present in females. . .

The study, conducted on mice, showed that females live longer than males and that XX largely governs this trait in ageing mice. . .

The Y chromosome, present only in males, contains very few genes other than those that create secondary sex characteristics, like male genitals and facial hair, and it is not necessary for survival.

Further, having XX ovaries enabled mice to live longer, beginning at 21 months, which is toward the end of a normal mouse lifespan. (Read more from “Why Women Live Longer Than Men: Science Has the Answer Now” HERE)

One of the Most Common Ingredients in the Western Diet Has Been Found to Alter Genes in the Brain

The use of soybean oil has increased dramatically over the last few decades, to the extent that is has become the most widely consumed edible oil in the US and other Western nations. However, its rise has coincided with an alarming escalation in metabolic conditions like diabetes, insulin resistance, and obesity, and a new study indicates that this may be down to the way that soybean oil causes genetic changes in the brain.

Previous research has shown that mice fed a diet that is high in soybean oil are much more likely to develop these conditions than rodents fed on other fats like coconut oil. Further studies hinted that the culprit may be linoleic acid, as mice that consumed soybean oil that had been modified to lack this key ingredient were spared many of these harmful effects.

To better understand how soybean oil produces these negative consequences, scientists decided to investigate its impact on the expression of genes in the hypothalamus, a brain region that regulates metabolism and a range of other essential processes. . .

Writing in the journal Endocrinology, the study authors explain that soybean oil was found to modify the expression of around 100 different genes in the hypothalamus, affecting processes such as metabolism, neurological disease, and inflammation.

Among the altered genes were some that are associated with schizophrenia, depression, and Alzheimer’s disease, although by far the most affected was a gene that codes for the production of a hormone called oxytocin.
