Videos Reveal Utter Chaos at Kabul Airport as Taliban Conquers Afghanistan

Videos uploaded from Kabul on Sunday showed chaos at the international airport as panicked people rushed to board aircraft ahead of the Taliban’s advance.

Gunfire was audible in the distance as refugees packed into transport aircraft. Operations at the airport were reportedly suspended for a time due to shooting nearby.

Shots were fired by U.S. troops to control the panicked crowd as the situation deteriorated:

Pentagon: Speed Taliban is Taking Over Afghanistan ‘Deeply Concerning’

The U.S. military has been alarmed by the speed with which the Taliban has managed to seize control of much of Afghanistan, as the United States works to wind down a war that has spanned nearly two decades and remove its troop presence from the country.

“We’re certainly concerned by the speed with which the Taliban has been moving,” Pentagon spokesman John Kirby told reporters Friday afternoon. “It’s deeply concerning.”

President Joe Biden, who is spending the weekend at Camp David, was briefed on the situation in Afghanistan on Friday, according to the White House. He last spoke publicly about the troop withdrawal Tuesday, telling reporters he didn’t regret his decision have all U.S. troops out of Afghanistan by September 11.

“We spent over a trillion dollars over 20 years—we trained and equipped with modern equipment over 300,000 Afghan forces,” Biden said. “Afghan leaders have to come together … They’ve got to fight for themselves, fight for their nation.” (Read more from “Pentagon: Speed Taliban is Taking Over Afghanistan ‘Deeply Concerning'” HERE)

Trump Says Situation With Taliban Would Be ‘More Successful’ if He Were Still President

Former President Donald Trump said he “personally had discussions with top Taliban leaders whereby they understood what they are doing now would not have been acceptable,” in a statement issued through the Save America PAC.

Since the United States pulled out of Afghanistan, the Taliban has taken over much of the country’s rural and lands, and over the past six days, the insurgent group has conquered nine provincial capitals, primarily in the north. The group now controls an estimated 65 percent of the country’s territory and 10 of its 34 provincial capitals.

President Joe Biden announced in mid-April that he intended to have U.S. troops out of the country by September 11. At the time of that decision, a number of polls showed Americans, disillusioned by so-called “forever wars,” were in favor of the move. However, since the subsequent Taliban takeovers, a number of Republicans have criticized Biden’s approach, including the former president.

“It would have been a much different and much more successful withdrawal, and the Taliban understood that better than anyone,” Trump said in his statement. “What is going on now is not acceptable. It should have been done much better.” (Read more from “Trump Says Situation With Taliban Would Be ‘More Successful’ if He Were Still President” HERE)

U.S. Warplanes Engaging Taliban in Effort to Slow Their Advance in Afghanistan

At this point, it’s a 50-50 proposition whether the Taliban will completely overrun Afghanistan before the U.S. retreat is complete.

Joe Biden’s original target date for withdrawal — September 11 of this year — is no longer realistic. The Taliban took another provincial capital on Sunday — the city of Kunduz in northern Afghanistan — and are threatening several others. . .

In order to slow the Taliban’s advance — and give the Afghan government time to flee — U.S. warplanes struck Taliban targets in Helmand Province, including Kandahar, Herat, and Lashkar Gah.

The US has sent B-52 bombers and Spectre gunships to Afghanistan in a bid to stop Taliban insurgents who are marching towards three key cities.

The B-52s are flying into Afghanistan from an airbase in Qatar, hitting targets around Kandahar, Herat, and Lashkar Gah in Helmand province, sources told The Times.

Taliban Ambushes and Kills Afghan Government Media Official

The Taliban ambushed and killed the director of Afghanistan’s government media center on Friday in the capital of Kabul, the latest killing of a government official just days after an assassination attempt on the country’s acting defense minister.

The slaying comes amid Taliban advances and battles for more territory as U.S. and NATO forces complete their final pullout from Afghanistan by the end of the month. The Taliban have been waging fierce battles for months across Afghanistan, laying siege to provincial capitals in the south and west of the country after capturing district after district and even seizing several key border crossings.

Also Friday, in southern Nimroz province, the capital of Zaranj appeared to be the first provincial capital to fall to the Taliban though the government claimed there was still fierce fighting around key infrastructure in the city. But the Taliban posted images on social media showing insurgents inside the local airport and posing for photographs at the entrance to the city.

Nimroz is sparsely populated in a region that’s mainly desert and Zaranj, the provincial capital, has about 50,000 residents. Its fall to the Taliban, if confirmed, was a mostly symbolic victory for the insurgents.

Meanwhile, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid told The Associated Press that the insurgents killed Dawa Khan Menapal, the chief of the Afghan government’s press operations for local and foreign media. He had previously been a deputy spokesman for Afghan President Ashraf Ghani. (Read more from “Taliban Ambushes and Kills Afghan Government Media Official” HERE)

Pentagon Puts Taliban on Notice, Extends Possibility of Airstrikes

The head of U.S. Central Command declined to say whether the military will cease airstrikes against the Taliban after the previously announced end date for such responses.

Gen. Kenneth F. McKenzie Jr., the top general overseeing operations in Afghanistan, told reporters on Sunday that “logistical support” would continue past the deadline, though he added, “I’m just not going to be able to comment about the future of U.S. airstrikes after [the] Aug. 31” deadline, according to the New York Times.

“For the days and weeks ahead, we will continue with our airstrikes in support of our Afghan partners, and that’s all I’ll be able to give you,” he said. “We’re taking airstrikes as we need to take them. We’re still carrying them out. I think we’re having [a] good effect in support of Afghan forces that are engaged in close fighting with the Taliban.” . . .

“I believe that the singular advantage the government of Afghanistan has right now in the fight they’re in is their Air Force. So we will do everything in our power to keep that Air Force effective flying and in support of their forces,” McKenzie said. “We spent a lot of time training them. Now is their moment, now is the time for that very stern test that I noted earlier they’re going to face. I think they have the resources and the capability to actually conduct that fight and win it.” (Read more from “Pentagon Puts Taliban on Notice, Extends Possibility of Airstrikes” HERE)

Report: Putin Extends Allied Hand to Biden as He ‘Offers Russian Bases to Spy on Taliban’

The offer comes after Moscow warned Washington last week against trying to establish its own military bases in former Soviet countries which neighbour Afghanistan. The US withdrawal has led to a resurgence in the Taliban, which continues to rout government troops in its advance towards the capital, Kabul. The Islamist group claims to control up to 85 percent of the country. . .

Russia also has a large Muslim population and has, in recent years, been battling the rise of Islamic fundamentalism, particularly in the Caucasus.

Sources told newspaper the Kommersant that Mr Putin had offered the use of Russian bases in both Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan for intelligence gathering at the summit in Geneva last month.

The alleged proposal would allow the US military to use drones in its operations, but as yet it’s unclear whether US troops would be allowed to stay permanently at the bases. (Read more from “Report: Putin Extends Allied Hand to Biden as He ‘Offers Russian Bases to Spy on Taliban'” HERE)

Taliban Tells Russia It Controls 85% Of Afghanistan, Seeks Peace With Moscow

A delegation of the Taliban terror group met with representatives of the Russian foreign ministry in Moscow, where one delegate claimed the Taliban currently controls about “85 percent of Afghanistan’s territory,” Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported Friday.

The Taliban, a jihadist terror group based in Afghanistan, controls roughly “85 percent of Afghanistan’s territory,” Taliban delegate Shahabuddin Delawar told reporters, as quoted by AFP.

Members of the Taliban delegation specifically claimed to hold sway over “about 250 of Afghanistan’s nearly 400 districts,” according to AFP. The French news agency noted the Taliban’s assertion was “impossible to independently verify and disputed by the government,” referring to Afghanistan’s internationally recognized government based in Kabul.

Taliban terrorists have allegedly “captured the [Afghan] border town of Islam Qala on the Iranian frontier and the Torghundi crossing with Turkmenistan,” Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid told AFP on July 8.

A delegation of Taliban representatives landed in Moscow on Thursday to “assure” Russia the group would not “allow” any other jihadist organizations to use Afghanistan as a base for their operations. Tucker Carlson Mocks Pentagon: ‘If The Woke Generals Treat Us Like They’ve Treated The Taliban, We’ll Be Fine’

By Daily Caller. Fox News host and Daily Caller co-founder Tucker Carlson hit back at the “woke generals” Friday after receiving criticism for his comments on President Joe Biden’s changes to the U.S. military.

During his broadcast of “Tucker Carlson Tonight,” Carlson took a few moments to talk about his experience being the target of, what he jokingly called, “Operation Silence-The-Talk-Show-Hosts.”

“Well, it was quite an experience yesterday being the very first target in the Pentagon’s new Operation Silence-The-Talk-Show-Hosts. Friends called us in concern. ‘Are you guys all right?’ And for a minute, we’ll concede we were almost rattled,” Carlson began.

“Then we realized, if the woke generals treat us like they’ve treated the Taliban, we’ll be fine. Twenty years later, the Taliban are still here,” he continued. “Maybe if we would have promised the Pentagon that we’ll get rid of traditional gender roles on this show, change the pronouns, defeat the patriarchy and all that, then they’d send us billions in unmarked hundred dollar bills as a reward.” (Read more from “Tucker Carlson Mocks Pentagon: ‘If The Woke Generals Treat Us Like They’ve Treated The Taliban, We’ll Be Fine’” HERE)

Taliban: War with America ‘Will Resume’ if Biden Undoes Trump Peace Deal

A spokesman for the Taliban told Afghanistan’s Khaama Press in an interview published Thursday that the terrorist group’s “war against the United States will resume … until they leave Afghanistan” if Joe Biden walks back President Donald Trump’s attempts to withdraw U.S. forces from the country.

Trump initiated talks including both the Taliban and the legitimate government of Afghanistan this year to come to an agreement that would result in the end of the American military presence in the country. Afghanistan is America’s longest war, launched in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The Trump administration has sought assurances from the Taliban that it would not harbor terrorists seeking to harm American interests – such as the architects of the 9/11 attacks, al-Qaeda – in exchange for America not continuing to attack the jihadist group.

Civilian casualties in Afghanistan dropped to their lowest level in eight years in 2020, as peace talks in Doha, Qatar – where the Taliban’s political offices are headquartered – marched on. Attacks on American troops have also declined, though the Taliban has become more prolific in attacking the Afghan military.

Joe Biden has indicated that he does not support a full withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan. The Afghan war is not listed as a “priority” on Biden’s administration website, or is any other foreign policy issue.

Taliban spokesman Mohammad Naeem Wardak told Khaama Press that he does not anticipate the peace talks with the United States will change under Biden but that the Taliban was prepared in the event that they did.
