Target CEO Stands by Transgender Bathroom Decision, Offers ‘Option’ to Customers

Target CEO Brian Cornell responded on Wednesday to the backlash the retailer has received in response to its new transgender bathroom policy.

Over 1.2 million people, to date, have signed a petition pledging to boycott until the policy is changed. Since Target’s policy was announced April 19, the company’s stock has dropped approximately 10 percent, or $4.5 billion in market value.

“I certainly recognize that stance we took, which by the way is similar to many of our retail peers, has received quite a bit of feedback. And as a company, we’re constantly listening. So we listened to our guests. We listened to our team members,” Cornell told CNBC’s Squawk Box.

While the CEO stood by his company’s choice, he announced an action the store will take in an effort to address the safety concerns raised by the sponsor of the petition, the American Family Association, and others.

Target has approximately 1,700 locations.

What Cornell did not say is that male and female restrooms would go back to being exclusively for that biological gender. Target’s solution therefore is that if a customer is uncomfortable with potentially having a person of a different sex in the restroom, choose the family restoom.

Given family restrooms only accommodate one customer at a time, that may create demand problems.

As reported by Western Journalism, the AFA was to meet with Target executives and has offered that if the retailer wants to address its safety concerns, a solution would be to provide unisex bathrooms (presumably the family restroom would fit that bill), in addition to the standard male and female ones. Transgender people (who make up less than half of one percent of the population) would then have that option, if they are not comfortable using the restroom that corresponds to their biological gender.

Cornell summed up his company’s view concerning the controversy. “So, we took a stance, and we’re going to continue to embrace our belief in diversity and inclusion to our company, but we’re also going to make sure our focus on safety is unwavering,” he said.

However, that “unwavering” commitment to safety will not include changing its bathroom policy. (For more from the author of “Target CEO Stands by Transgender Bathroom Decision, Offers ‘Option’ to Customers” please click HERE)

The Financial Consequences of Target’s New Bathroom Policy

Target shareholders are taking a financial hit following a major petition drive calling for a boycott of the company over the discount retailer’s controversial chain-wide inclusive policy directed at transgender individuals allowing them to use the bathroom or fitting room that matches their gender identity.

Critics fear Target’s policy is ripe for abuse since it would allow men to identify as a woman in order to gain access to the women’s bathrooms or fitting rooms.

Target’s stock price plummeted about 5 percent following the announcement of the company’s new policy while its competitor Walmart is down around 3.5 percent over the same period.

The nation’s second-largest retailer is feeling a huge backlash from the boycott organized by the American Family Association (AFA). To date, the petition that pledges individuals not to shop at the big box retailer has over a million signatures.

The boycott, announced on April 20, has brought national attention to Target’s controversial policy and the company is also feeling pushback in social media.

The boycott by a conservative group marks a new development in political advocacy. For years, progressive activists have successfully pressured corporations, including Target, on a range of policy issues and the boycott by AFA shows conservatives are also now willing to mount a serious effort to punish companies.

Target’s inclusive policy seems to have been designed to appease a 2010 boycott by the LGBT community over the company’s political donation to a group that was supporting Tom Emmer- a Republican Minnesota gubernatorial candidate who opposed gay marriage.

At that time, gay activist groups slammed Target in the media and in social media charging the company was anti-gay.

Following the encounter with progressive activist groups, Target has aggressively promoted LGBT issues under its corporate diversity program including a #TakePride hashtag and a video titled, “Target’s Pride Manifesto.”

At this point, Target is holding firm and refusing to back away from its policy emphasizing its goal of inclusion, “We certainly respect that there are a wide variety of perspectives and opinions. As a company that firmly stands behind what it means to offer our team an inclusive place to work — and our guests an inclusive place to shop — we continue to believe that this is the right thing for Target, ” said company spokesperson.

The AFA says its boycott is not about transgender individuals but is based on concerns that sexual predators will take advantage of the policy to assault young girls and women.

Appearing on Fox Business Network’s “Risk & Reward,” Abraham Hamilton from AFA told host Deirdre Bolton that the AFA boycott was focused on the risk from sexual predators and not any specific concerns with transgenders, saying “there’s no one here at the American Family Association who believes that the transgender community is synonymous with sexual predatory behavior.”

Hamilton continued, “But if we don’t understand the realities of the risk of sexual predatory behavior – because these predators will stop at nothing to ply their dastardly trade – and we believe that Target’s new policy positions them to be the new location for sexual predatory behavior.”

Speaking from his experience as trial prosecutor Hamilton added, “I’ve had the unfortunate experience of working through attempting to restore a family after the children have suffered sexual abuse and as you can imagine, it’s not a pretty sight.”

Target’s social statement policy may be negatively impacting shareholders.

Ed Butowsky, Managing Partner at Chapwood Investments LLC, believes part of the decline in Target’s stock is attributed to the boycott and the share price will suffer going forward because of Target’s policy, “it is obvious that this is going to hurt earnings for the company and by pursuing this policy they are putting future earnings at risk.”

Butowsky elaborated, “It’s quite obvious that the million signatures against the policy from your customer base will have a negative impact on traffic flow to your company.”

Finally, Butowsky added Target should focus on creating shareholder value and not destroy it by “taking stands on social issues.”

In most cases, companies respond to public pressure especially when shareholder value is at stake. If Target feels a financial impact from the boycott, expect to see a change in its inclusion policy. Target Boycott Crosses 1 Million Signers

13944980767_ed74fd413b_bMore than 1,000,000 people have signed the boycott pledge against Target, following the secretive decision by executives to open all of their stores’ bathrooms and changing rooms to people of both sexes.

Late Thursday night, roughly 75 people a minute were adding their name to the petition as it clicked over 1 million, just after 10:30 pm Eastern Time.

“That’s a million families who are going to spread the word about Target, so they may not get those customers back,” or their money, said Tim Wildmon, president of the American Family Association, which has hosted the boycott.

Target’s “management is just going to have step up here [and] say ‘We’re selling hammers and hats, we’re not into social engineering,’” he said.

The boycott was announced April 20 by the association, one day after Target revealed its decision to favor its few transgender customers and staff over the rest of the population. A study of the 2010 census data suggests that only about 1 in 2,400 adults change their names to match names used by the other sex. (Read more from “Target Boycott Crosses 1 Million Signers” HERE)

Watch: Tennessee Pastor Shares Reaction After Confronting Target Staff About New Transgender Policy

Target_interiorIn the days since Target announced a policy shift allowing shoppers to use the restroom and fitting room that aligns with their gender identity, numerous critics have shared their opposition through such channels as petitions, boycotts and social media rants. A few have gone so far as to carry a recording device to a Target location in an effort to determine the extent of the new corporate attempt at inclusion.

Pastor Greg Locke of Global Vision Bible Church in Mount Juliet, Tenn., stood in front of a local Target store to share his own research into the matter as well as his response to the company’s stance.

“I didn’t want to just believe everything I’ve heard in the news media the past 48 hours,” he said, “so I walked right through the front doors of our local Target and went to the customer service desk, found a manager and I asked, ‘Can you please help me understand your new bathroom policy?’”

Locke recalled that the employee “shrugged her shoulders and smirked, knowing no doubt this question was coming from others,” and informed him that he was free to use whichever restroom with which he most closely identified.

“I said, ‘Like right now?’” he continued. “She said, ‘Yes sir, whichever bathroom you self-identify with, you are welcome to go and use right now.’”

After Locke engaged the staff member further, he said she told him he could receive additional information by calling Target’s corporate offices. (Read more from “Tennessee Pastor Shares Reaction After Confronting Target Staff About New Transgender Policy” HERE)

More Than 500,000 Boycott Target Over Transgender Bathroom Policy

Target_store_Scottsdale_Centre_in_Delta,_BCA conservative Christian activist group has gained more than half a million signatures and counting from people pledging to boycott Target over its transgender bathroom policy.

The petition started by the American Family Association on Wednesday raises concerns that Target’s inclusive stance on transgender rights encourages sexual predators and puts women and young girls in danger, because “a man can simply say he ‘feels like a woman today’ and enter the women’s restroom.”

The boycott has more than 517,000 signatures as of Monday afternoon, marking it as one of AFA’s most popular campaigns.

“This is the best response we’ve ever had this quick,” says AFA President Tim Wildmon, attributing the protest’s viral nature to the fact that “everybody knows who Target is, and it’s an easy-to-understand issue” . . .

Target made its position public in a blog post last week, stating that the company welcomes “transgender team members and guests to use the restroom or fitting room facility that corresponds with their gender identity.” The announcement comes as legislation on transgender issues in multiple states has spurred several major corporations and businesses to take a stance on LGBT rights. Boycott Target: Michelle Obama’s Favorite Store Invites Men to Use Women’s Bathrooms, Changing Rooms

1024px-Target_store-Springfield-2005-10-15The Target department store chain has jumped into the transgender bathroom debate by declaring that men who claim to be women may use whatever bathroom or changing room they choose.

“Inclusivity is a core belief at Target,” a new company statement reads. “It’s something we celebrate. We stand for equality and equity, and strive to make our guests and team members feel accepted, respected and welcomed in our stores and workplaces every day.”

The retailer added, “We welcome transgender team members and guests to use the restroom or fitting room facility that corresponds with their gender identity” . . .

Customers and potential customers almost immediately spoke out against Target’s decision to ignore the biological difference between men and women.

“Why would you choose to allow men in the women’s restroom when every single store has a single family restroom that can easily accommodate your Transgender customers,” Sandy Bell Small wrote on Facebook. “Way to go Target for choosing to protect the .03% of the ADULT transgender population over your women, children, mothers, grandchildren, teenager population. I’m sure you will say you I longer miss us but I’m sure the $$$’s spent weekly will be felt somewhere.” (Read more from “Boycott Target: Michelle Obama’s Favorite Store Invites Men to Use Women’s Bathrooms, Changing Rooms” HERE)

Target Closing Over a Dozen Stores, Here’s Why

Target plans to close 13 stores nationwide, including one in New Ulm and two others in Milwaukee and Superior, Wisconsin . . .

Target was hurt by a massive credit-card breach before Christmas 2013 that sent shoppers temporarily fleeing. The company also pulled the plug on a major expansion into Canada earlier this year . . .

Layoffs in 2015 included 2,500 jobs, or about one-fifth of the workers in the company’s corporate offices in Minneapolis and Brooklyn Park. (Read more from “Target Closing Over a Dozen Stores, Here’s Why” HERE)

X-Rated Audio Shocks Customers at Target Store

Shoppers at a Target store in San Jose stopped in their tracks Wednesday morning when a sexually explicit recording began blaring over the store’s public address system.

Chris Minor, who was shopping at the Westgate Mall store, said the material was X-rated and had profanities. Minor recorded the incident, along with the reactions of fellow shoppers, on his cell phone. Customers, which included mothers with babies, were stunned . . .

“I felt violated, and my body said wait a minute, this ain’t right. So I was uneasy,” he said. “I thought it may have been Halloween related, maybe an employee playing games, but this was rated-X material, which made me feel very uncomfortable. I was taken aback, very frustrated, and appalled, and angered by what I heard,” Minor told KPIX 5.

Minor said the store apologized over the PA system, and then the explicit recording started again. (Read more from “X-Rated Audio Shocks Customers at Target Store” HERE)
