State Backtracks On Woke Math Curriculum Overhaul After Stern Opposition

The California Board of Education is set to push back against implementing an overhaul of its mathematics curriculum after opponents argued the plan needlessly inserts politics and social justice initiatives into lessons.

“California is on the verge of politicizing K-12 math in a potentially disastrous way. This postponement means the State Board of Education has heard the message loud and clear. STEM leaders don’t want California students left behind by introducing politics into the math curriculum,” said in a statement Dr. Williamson M. Evers, a senior fellow of the Independent Institute.

The California board is slated to postpone implementing its proposed Mathematics Curriculum Framework during a Wednesday meeting, pushing final action on the curriculum to May 2022, according to the board’s agenda for this month.

The move comes after hundreds of former and current professionals working in science, math, and engineering fields, as well as educators and venture capitalists, signed an open letter denouncing the plan as one that will “de-mathematize math” and instead insert “environmental and social justice” teachings into curriculum.

“For all the rhetoric in this framework about equity, social justice, environmental care and culturally appropriate pedagogy, there is no realistic hope for a more fair, just, equal and well-stewarded society if our schools uproot long-proven, reliable and highly effective math methods and instead try to build a mathless Brave New World on a foundation of unsound ideology,” the letter reads. California Has Found a New Way to Penalize Pro-Second Amendment Americans

. . .In San Jose, the city is mulling charging gun owners to cover the cost of firearm-related violence (via Axios):

San Jose will require gun owners to compensate taxpayers for gun-related emergency responses, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Why it matters: It’s the first U.S. city to take such a step. The move, approved unanimously by the San Jose City Council on Tuesday, comes after last month’s mass shooting at a transit station in the city.

The big picture: The ordinance requires every firearm owner to buy liability insurance coverage and pay an annual fee for medical and police responses to gun-related injuries and deaths, the Chronicle reports.

Officials haven’t decided how much gun owners would be required to pay annually but the amount would be determined following a gun harm study from the Pacific Institute on Research and Evaluation, which is expected to be completed this fall.

Transgender Exposes Male Genitalia in Front of Young Girls at California Spa

Members of the LGBTQ community are “appalled” after a transgender individual exposed [himself] in the women’s section of a Los Angeles spa while young girls were reportedly present, Fox News contributor Tammy Bruce said Monday.

The incident occurred at Wi Spa in Los Angeles. A woman can be heard confronting staff members in a video she filmed demanding they ask the individual to leave the area. An employee refused to confront the customer, defending the “sexual orientation” of the individual in question.

Bruce, a member of the LGBTQ community herself, told Tucker Carlson on Monday that the exchange was troubling to many of her “transgender friends” who found the individual’s behavior offensive. . .

The employee in the video appears to invoke the state’s legal requirements which leave her hands virtually tied. Bruce called on the “gay political leadership” to reform those policies that “keep people divided” from one another. California Bans Taxpayer-Funded Travel to These GOP States

California prohibited state-funded travel to five more Republican-led states Monday that have passed legislation allegedly discriminating against members of the LGBTQ community.

“When states discriminate against LGBTQ+ Americans, California law requires our office to take action,” Democratic Attorney General Rob Bonta said in a statement. “These new additions to the state-funded travel restrictions list are about exactly that. It’s been 52 years to the day since the Stonewall Riots began, but that same fight remains all too alive and well in this country.”

“Rather than focusing on solving real issues, some politicians think it’s in their best interest to demonize trans youth and block life-saving care. Make no mistake: We’re in the midst of an unprecedented wave of bigotry and discrimination in this country – and the State of California is not going to support it,” he continued.

The state added Arkansas, Florida, Montana, North Dakota and West Virginia to the list, which already included 12 other states. (Read more from “California Bans Taxpayer-Funded Travel to These GOP States” HERE)

Over 70 Percent of Californians 12 and Over Fully Vaccinated

Over 70 percent of Californians 12 and older are at least partially vaccinated, Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) announced on Tuesday.

“Over 70% of Californians 12 and older have now received at least one shot of the COVID-19 vaccine,” the Democrat governor announced.

According to the state’s dashboard, over 19 million statewide are considered “fully vaccinated,” and nearly 3.5 million are considered “partially vaccinated.”

The news comes as the Biden administration admits that it will likely not reach its 70 percent vaccination goal before the Fourth of July, despite the White House’s recent efforts to encourage mass vaccinations across the board. Efforts included teaming up with Snapchat, encouraging young teens to get vaccinated.

During Tuesday’s White House coronavirus task force meeting, Biden’s coronavirus adviser, Jeff Zeints, blamed young people, particularly 18-26-year-olds, for falling short. (Read more from “Over 70 Percent of Californians 12 and Over Fully Vaccinated” HERE)

Judge Rules California’s Ban on Assault Weapons Unconstitutional

A federal judge on Friday struck down California’s ban on assault weapons as unconstitutional but left plenty of time for the state to file an appeal.

Judge Roger T. Benitez, who has favored pro-gun groups in past rulings, described the AR-15 rifle, used in many of the nation’s deadliest mass shootings, as an ideal weapon.

“Like the Swiss Army Knife, the popular AR-15 rifle is a perfect combination of home defense weapon and homeland defense equipment,” he wrote in Friday’s decision.

“Yet, the State of California makes it a crime to have an AR15 type rifle,” Benitez continued. “Therefore, this Court declares the California statutes to be unconstitutional.”

He praised the AR-15 as a rifle that should be formally protected by the law for its “militia readiness.” (Read more from “Judge Rules California’s Ban on Assault Weapons Unconstitutional” HERE)

State Gives Tens of Thousands of Violent Inmates Early Release Eligibility

The state of California announced Saturday that it is providing 76,000 inmates with early release eligibility. More than 63,000 inmates are serving time for violent crimes, as reported by the Associated Press.

More than 63,000 inmates who are violent and repeat felons will have the opportunity to lessen their time served by one-third via a “good behavior credits” system. The initiative went into effect Saturday, but the AP notes that inmates will not walk free for months or years.

Of the eligible early release inmates, 20,000 are serving life sentences with the possibility of parole. Half of this number constitutes inmates previously convicted of “a second serious but nonviolent offense.”

The roughly 10,000 inmates in this category will have eligibility to be released early upon serving half their sentence, as established in the “three strikes law” in California. The 1994 law requires a felon convicted of a new felony to be sentenced to prison for double the amount of time. After two strikes, a defendant would have a mandatory sentencing of 25 years to life. Man Dies After Being Pinned to the Ground for 5 Minutes During Arrest, Bodycam Footage Shows

The city of Alameda, California, released bodycam footage this week of an incident involving police during which a 26-year-old man, Mario Gonzalez, died after officers pinned him to the ground for about five minutes during an arrest.

The incident, which occurred April 19, one day before former Minneapolis police Officer Derek Chauvin was convicted on murder and manslaughter charges for his role in George Floyd’s death, is already drawing comparisons in the media to the Floyd killing. During an arrest last May, Chauvin knelt on Floyd’s neck for more than nine minutes despite Floyd’s repeated complaints that he couldn’t breathe.

In the nearly hourlong footage released Tuesday, police appear to wrestle with Gonzalez, restraining him by pinning him facedown on the ground and applying pressure to his legs and back. After several minutes of struggling on the ground, Gonzalez becomes unresponsive and police immediately begin attempting chest compressions.

In both initial and updated reports about the incident, police in Alameda, which is just south of Oakland, wrote that Gonzalez had a “medical emergency” during an altercation with police. The department noted that officers responded to the scene after two separate reports came in about a male under the influence in a public area who may have committed a theft. Student Shares Campus Tale That Soap Dispensers Are Racist

A student at the University of California, Los Angeles suggested that hand soap dispensers are the latest form of systemic racism, according to her peer.

Sullivan Israel, a civil engineering student, recounted a debate he attended by his school’s Republican group in which a black student said automatic dispensers did not take to her because of the color of her skin.

“As one UCLA student claimed during the debate, automatic soap dispensers ‘don’t see her hands’ due to the dark pigment of her skin,” Israel wrote in the College Fix. “As another student reiterated, soap dispensers are racist because they force ‘black and brown bodies’ to show their palms — ‘the only light areas of the skin’ — in order to get soap out.”

However, automated soap dispensers use a motion detector that triggers the soap to fall, rather than a detection mechanism determined by the color of someone’s skin.

Israel described how he feels the term “racism” is thrown around too freely on campus, saying that such claims diminish bigger charges of racial discrimination. (Read more from “Student Shares Campus Tale That Soap Dispensers Are Racist” HERE)

Mexican-American Grandmother Brutally Beaten by ‘Black’ Attacker Who Thought She Was Asian (VIDEO)

An elderly Mexican-American woman in California was reportedly savagely beaten by an attacker who thought the woman was Asian and hurled an anti-Chinese racial slur at her, according to reports.

A 70-year-old woman was riding on a bus to go grocery shopping in the Eagle Rock neighborhood of Los Angeles last Friday afternoon, the victim’s son told the Eastsider. The elderly woman was getting off the bus to go to the Vons supermarket when another passenger screamed an anti-Chinese racial epithet at the Mexican-American woman. The suspect brutally beat the Mexican-American woman, whom she allegedly believed to be Asian.

“The victim’s son reportedly says that a female passenger, described as ‘black,’ called his mother an anti-Asian slur and then attacked her,” KTLA reported.

The attacker reportedly pulled out some of the victim’s hair as she dragged her from the back of the bus to the front. The son said his mother suffered a concussion and a broken nose from the assault. Her leg was badly injured, and she now has difficulty walking, according to her son. She was allegedly held overnight in a hospital. Photos show the unnamed woman’s face severely bruised and swollen.

“Nobody would help,” the victim’s son alleges. “Not even the bus driver.” (Read more from “Mexican-American Grandmother Brutally Beaten by ‘Black’ Attacker Who Thought She Was Asian” HERE)
