Hunter Biden Invested in a Chinese Tech Company That Was Recently Blacklisted for Human Rights Concerns

A Chinese tech company recently blacklisted by the United States government over human rights concerns has business ties to Hunter Biden, son of Democratic presidential candidate and former Vice President Joe Biden.

On Monday, the U.S. Department of Commerce announced that 28 Chinese entities would be added to the list of firms that U.S. companies are barred from doing business with, as they “have been implicated in human rights violations and abuses in China’s campaign targeting Uighurs and other predominantly Muslim ethnic minorities.”

“The U.S. Government and Department of Commerce cannot and will not tolerate the brutal suppression of ethnic minorities within China,” said Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross.

One of the added entities is Megvii Technology, a company in which Hunter Biden owns a stake through his investment fund, Bohai Harvest RST (BHR). According to Fox Business, Biden has a 10 percent stake in the investment company.

A story in the Intercept from earlier this year explains the Biden-Mevii relationship in greater detail. In 2017, the report explains, BHR invested in one of Megvii’s divisions, Face++, which makes facial recognition software.

Human Rights Watch initially issued a report in May that said Face++ code was found in an app used by Chinese police to track people in the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region. The organization later said that the code was “inoperable.” In April, the New York Times listed Megvii as one of multiple tech companies behind software used in China’s technological crackdown on Uighurs, but the company at the time said that it was focused on “commercial not political solutions.”

Megvii also says that the U.S. government’s blacklist decision was a wrong.

“Megvii strongly objects to the company’s designation on the U.S. Commerce Department’s Entity List, for which there are no grounds,” reads a company statement. “We are committed to making sure our technology has a positive impact on society and we are in compliance with all laws and regulations in jurisdictions where we operate.”

Megvii is a private company that is currently trying to go public, though Goldman Sachs said it is re-evaluating its involvement in the initial public offering (IPO) in light of the blacklisting. A September story at Wired points out that the IPO filing admits that police make use of its technology, but not in the context of Uighur surveillance. Instead, “It presents case studies that make its surveillance offerings sound more cuddly.”

Hunter Biden’s role at BHR and the fact that the announcement of the fund coincided with his 2013 trip to China aboard Air Force Two as part of a U.S. delegation are at the heart of President Donald Trump’s efforts to have both Bidens’ dealings in the country looked at by the Chinese government.

Trump suggested last week that “China should start an investigation in to the Bidens, because what happened in China was just about as bad as what happened with Ukraine.” A Chinese official responded this week that the country has “no intention of intervening in the domestic affairs of the United States.” (For more from the author of “Hunter Biden Invested in a Chinese Tech Company That Was Recently Blacklisted for Human Rights Concerns” please click HERE)

Report: Biden Advisers Knew His 2018 Ukraine Comments Would Cause Problems

Advisers to former Vice President Joe Biden reportedly said they knew his 2018 comments on Ukraine would be problematic.

The 2020 Democratic presidential candidate spoke on corruption at a 2018 Council on Foreign Relations event in Washington, D.C., where he recounted a trip he made to Kyiv, Ukraine, in 2015, BuzzFeed reported.

Biden described telling former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko that Ukraine’s prosecutor general must be fired or the U.S. would withhold $1 billion in loan guarantees — a story which three former Biden officials knew would be problematic, they told BuzzFeed on condition of anonymity. . .

One of the former officials added that when Poroshenko fired former Prosecutor General Viktor Shokin in 2016, “it had nothing to do with Burisma,” the company on whose board Hunter Biden sat. The former vice president’s son joined the board of Burisma Holdings in 2014.

“I obviously believed that there was nothing improper, but, especially because there is so much scrutiny you never want there to be anything that appears in any way inappropriate,” one former official told BuzzFeed. “At no point did anyone think or believe that Shokin was investigating Burisma, so it wasn’t that. It was more, the appearance of him getting that job not because of his own achievements but because of his connection.” (Read more from “Report: Biden Advisers Knew His 2018 Ukraine Comments Would Cause Problems” HERE)

The Supposedly Moderate Joe Biden Wants Gun Owners to Either Hand Over Their Firearms or Register With the Feds

Democratic presidential candidate and former Vice President Joe Biden wants gun owners to either hand their hardware to the feds or sign up for a national registry, according to his campaign’s gun control plan announced on Thursday.

At a candidate gun control forum on the day before the plan’s announcement, Biden said that something like a national gun registry or national gun licensing was something that could be done “down the line,” but spoke more strongly in favor of “serious things” that could be done quickly.

One of those “serious things,” outlined in Thursday’s plan, is treating so-called “assault weapons” and “high-capacity” magazines like machine guns under federal law. Basically, gun owners with offending hardware will have two options: “Sell the weapons to the government, or register them under the National Firearms Act.”

What constitutes an “assault weapon,” according to Biden’s plan? Well, the candidate wants to bring back the 1994 ban with modifications: “This time, the bans will be designed based on lessons learned from the 1994 bans. For example, the ban on assault weapons will be designed to prevent manufacturers from circumventing the law by making minor changes that don’t limit the weapon’s lethality.”

Of course, one of the key criticisms of the 1994 ban was that it focused primarily on cosmetic features that didn’t affect how guns functioned in the first place, so it remains to be seen what lessons will be learned in new legislation.

Meanwhile, with his “down the line” admission on Wednesday, Biden has given more credence to the slippery slope concerns that Second Amendment proponents raise whenever the subject of new gun control comes up, just as fellow candidate Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., did at a recent Democratic debate.

While running in a presidential field packed with further-left candidates, Biden has tried to brand himself so far as the party’s more moderate choice (despite his platform being well to the left of Hillary Clinton’s in 2016); the question here is whether or not moderates and independents will get on board with a gun control plan like this.

However, given the current state of the 2020 Democratic field on gun control — and the fact that things like confiscation and federal licensing are becoming progressive litmus tests — maybe this is what subjectively passes for moderate gun control now. WATCH: Biden Explodes on Reporter – Here’s the Question That Made Him Go Off

Former Vice President Joe Biden snapped at a reporter on Friday during the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Unions for All Summit in Los Angeles. The reporter asked Biden about his son, Hunter, sitting on the board of a Ukrainian gas company and being paid $50,000 a month despite having zero experience in natural energy. At the time, Joe Biden was handling affairs with the Ukrainian government. The reporter wanted to know how those facts didn’t create a conflict of interest.

“How was your role as vice president in charge of policy in Ukraine and your son’s job in Ukraine, how is that not a conflict of interest?” the reporter asked. . .

“It’s not a conflict of interest. There’s been no indication of any conflict of interest from Ukraine or anywhere else. Period. I’m not going to respond to that!” Biden replied. . .

“Let’s focus on the problem. Focus on this man, that no president has ever done. No president,” Biden said.

This conflict of interest is the very definition of swampy behavior that Americans are tired of seeing. Biden has done absolutely nothing to shed light or even try to defend his actions – probably because he knew they were wrong. Instead, he’s deflected onto Trump. Apparently we should be angry at Trump for bringing up the Bidens’ corrupt behavior, not at the actually corrupt behavior itself.

Trump Escalates Calls for Investigating Biden Corruption Scandal in Major Way; Documents Heighten Scrutiny on Biden-Ukraine Dealings

By Daily Wire. President Donald Trump told reporters on the White House lawn on Thursday that Ukraine and China should both be investigating 2020 Democratic Party presidential candidate Joe Biden and his son, Hunter, over their actions while Biden served as vice president in the Obama administration.

“If they were honest about it, they would start a major investigation into the Bidens,” Trump said when he was asked what he wanted Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky to do about Biden and his son. “They should investigate the Bidens. Likewise, China should start an investigation into the Bidens, because what happened in China is just about as bad as what happened with Ukraine.”

Trump’s call for China to investigate Biden for corruption stems comes as NBC News reported this week on a 2013 vice presidential trip to China on which Hunter accompanied his dad.

“At the time, it seemed mildly noteworthy, but not particularly unusual: Then-Vice President Joe Biden, traveling to China on an official visit, had brought his son Hunter Biden along,” NBC News reported. “And when the two appeared in public together in Beijing during the 2013 trip, there were all the typical trappings of a mini-family vacation tacked on to a business trip.”

“What wasn’t known then was that as he accompanied his father to China, Hunter Biden was forming a Chinese private equity fund that associates said at the time was planning to raise big money, including from China. Hunter Biden has acknowledged meeting with Jonathan Li, a Chinese banker and his partner in the fund during the trip, although his spokesman says it was a social visit,” NBC News continued. “The Chinese business license that brought the new fund into existence was issued by Shanghai authorities 10 days after the trip, with Hunter Biden a member of the board. Seeking to expand his corruption accusations beyond Ukraine, Trump has accused Hunter Biden of using his trip on Air Force Two to procure $1.5 billion from China for his fund, calling it ‘a horrible thing.’”

Documents Heighten Scrutiny on Biden-Ukraine Dealings, Indicate Hunter May Have Made ‘Millions’

By Fox News. A batch of newly released documents, including court filings as well as notes from interviews conducted by Rudy Giuliani, have put the spotlight back on Biden family dealings in Ukraine—even as House Democrats’ impeachment probe zeroes in on President Trump’s push to convince Kiev to investigate them.

And they’ve raised more questions about how much money Joe Biden’s son Hunter made while serving on the board of a Ukrainian natural gas firm at the center of the controversy, with one estimate putting the figure in the “millions.”

Among the documents, as Fox News reported Wednesday, are notes from an interview Trump attorney Giuliani conducted with fired Ukrainian prosecutor Viktor Shokin earlier this year, in which he claimed he was told by former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Geoffrey R. Pyatt to back off an investigation involving that firm, Burisma Holdings, and its founder. According to interview notes, Shokin claimed Pyatt — currently the ambassador to Greece — told him to handle that investigation “with white gloves.” . . .

In that interview, Shokin also claimed that former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko told him he should not investigate Burisma, “as it was not in the interest of Joe and/or Hunter Biden.” Shokin claimed Poroshenko told him that due to his investigation, Joe Biden held “up to one billion dollars in U.S. aid to Ukraine.” Poroshenko eventually removed Shokin.

Biden’s campaign and congressional Democrats reject these allegations, maintaining that Biden was only involved due to corruption concerns surrounding Shokin and casting Giuliani’s claims as “debunked conspiracy theories.” (Read more from “Documents Heighten Scrutiny on Biden-Ukraine Dealings, Indicate Hunter May Have Made ‘Millions’” HERE)

President Trump’s Biden-Ukraine Tweet Is Sure to Cause a Liberal Meltdown; Trump GOES OFF: ‘Biden and His Son Are Stone-Cold Crooked’

By Townhall. If there’s a reason why Republicans like Donald Trump, it’s because the man knows how to punch back. He’ll slap down liberal reporters to their faces. He’ll tweet. He’ll hold rallies. And all of this against insane odds. The Democrat-media complex is vast, well-financed, organized, and merciless. They control the cultural centers of the country. It’s an uphill battle, but Trump always finds a way to find a seam and get under the Left’s skin.

(Editor’s note: Twitter took down the photo – see below – even though Trump had modified it, bringing the photo squarely into fair use. Twitter virtually never does this to other public figures)

Trump GOES OFF: ‘Biden and His Son Are Stone-Cold Crooked’

By Breitbart. President Donald Trump criticized former Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden on Wednesday, accusing them of corruption in Ukraine and China.

“Biden and his son are stone-cold crooked and you know it,” Trump said to reporters at the White House. “His son walks out with millions of dollars, the kid knows nothing, you know it and so do we.”

In 2013, Hunter Biden scored a $1.5 billion dollar investment deal with the Bank of China just days after traveling with his father to visit the country. Hunter Biden was also hired as a paid board member of Burisma Holdings in April 2014, earning up to $83,000 a month. . .

Trump demurred when reporters asked what he wanted Ukranian President Volodymyr Zelensky to do about Biden, during their phone conversation that was widely scrutinized after a whistleblower raised the alarm of the president discussing the topic. ‘Bidengate’ VIDEO: Joe Biden Brags to the Council on Foreign Relations About Withholding $1 Billion in Aid From Ukraine

On Monday’s episode of “White House Brief,” Jon discussed a 2018 video in which former Vice President Joe Biden bragged about threatening to withhold $1 billion in aid from Ukraine unless Ukraine fired the lead prosecutor investigating Burisma, the company tied to Biden’s son, Hunter Biden.

“Joe Biden’s son, Hunter, was a consultant and a board member for a Ukrainian energy company called Burisma,” Jon said. “Burisma is riddled with corruption charges and came under investigation by a prosecutor for corruption … after they start the investigation for corruption, Joe Biden gets on the phone with the president of Ukraine and says fire that prosecutor or else. Biden admits that he does this on tape.”

While speaking on a panel with the Council on Foreign Relations on Jan. 23, 2018, Biden bragged about withholding aid to Ukraine.

“I had gotten a commitment from Poroshenko and Yanukovych that they would take action against the state prosecutor and they didn’t. So they were walking out of the press conference, and I said we were not going to give them the $1 billion. They said you have no authority. You are not the president. The president said … I said call him,” Biden said. “I’m telling you, you are not getting $1 billion. I said you’re not getting $1 billion and I am going to be leaving here in six hours and if the prosecutor is not fired you are not getting the money. Well, son of a b**** … he got fired.” . . .

According to the Democrats, the Ukraine scandal involved Trump telling Ukraine that he would withhold money if he did not get dirt on Joe Biden. Jon asserted that it turns out that everything the Democrats claimed Trump said is what Biden said to the former president of Ukraine. Hillary Clinton on Biden Touching Girls and Women: ‘Get Over It’

Last week, twice-failed presidential candidate Hillary Clinton shrugged off concerns regarding former Vice President Joe Biden’s apparent inappropriate touching of women and girls. “Get over it,” Mrs. Clinton told PEOPLE magazine during a joint-interview with daughter Chelsea, in which she also stressed the importance of removing President Donald Trump from office.

When PEOPLE raised questions about Biden’s suspect moments with females on the campaign trail, Hillary was quick to jump in, the magazine outlined.

“For goodness’ sake, I’m sorry, I have to jump in because I’ve heard a little bit about that,” Hillary said. “I mean, I don’t think that the Twitterverse is the American electorate, but there are lots of vocal voices that say all kinds of things.”

“[Biden] is a thoroughly decent human being who has served our country honorably and well for decades,” she continued. “You could take any person who sticks their little head above the parapet and says, ‘I’m going to run for president,’ and find something that … a little annoying habit or other kind of behavior that people are going to pick apart and disagree with.” . . .

“We can pick apart anybody,” the former Secretary of State reiterated. “I mean, that’s a great spectator sport. But this man who’s there in the Oval Office right now poses a clear and present danger to the future of the United States. So get over it.” (Read more from “Hillary Clinton on Biden Touching Girls and Women: ‘Get Over It’” HERE)

Former PM: Ukraine Must Investigate Joe Biden’s Son; Unearthed Documents Reveal Details That Contradict What Biden Said About His Dealings in Ukraine

By Townhall. Ukraine must investigate the activities of Joe Biden’s son to establish whether his role in a Ukrainian gas company complied with the country’s laws, Mykola Azarov, Ukraine’s former prime minister, said in an interview.

Hunter Biden’s role in the company, Burisma Holdings Limited, is in focus after the White House published a memo showing U.S. President Donald Trump asked his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskiy in a July phone call to get prosecutors to look into his activities. Zelenskiy agreed.

Joe Biden, former U.S. vice president and a contender in next year’s U.S. presidential race, has denied using his influence to get Ukraine’s prosecutor general fired to prevent him investigating his son’s involvement and has said that he and his son have done nothing wrong.

Ukraine’s National Anti-Corruption Bureau said on Friday it was investigating activity at Burisma between 2010-2012, but that it was not looking into changes to its board in 2014 when Hunter Biden joined.

Hunter Biden was a director on Burisma’s board from 2014 until at least 2018, according to documents filed by the company in Cyprus where it is registered. (Read more from “Former PM: Ukraine Must Investigate Joe Biden’s Son” HERE)

Unearthed Documents Reveal Details That Contradict What Biden Said About His Dealings in Ukraine

By The Blaze. John Solomon, an executive president at The Hill, called into question the version of events that former Vice President Joe Biden has been repeating regarding his interactions with Ukraine while he was vice president. . .

While Biden has admitted that he urged then-Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko to fire Prosecutor General Viktor Shokin, but that it had nothing to do with his son or Burisma Holdings.

In response to questions about whether his foreign policy benefited his son, Biden insisted that he had “never spoken to my son about his overseas business dealings” and said that reporters “should be looking at Trump” instead. . .

Through interviews and reviewing documents, Solomon said, he found proof that lawyers for Burisma had approached the Ukrainian government shortly after Shokin’s firing to apologize “for dissemination of false information by U.S. representatives and public figures.”

Solomon also pointed to a 2015 New York Times story, which noted that Burisma hired Hunter Biden less than a month after former-President Barack Obama appointed Joe Biden to be in charge of the United States’ relationship with Ukraine.
